IMac won't recognize external microphone through 4-pin splitter

I recently purchased a Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 headset with separate audio output/input jacks, so I planned ahead and purchased a "splitter" adapter to get it to work with my Late 2012 27" iMac's 3.5mm combo jack. According to different accounts, it should have worked. But it doesn't.
With the splitter, the audio output works fine, but the microphone isn't appearing in the Sounds system preference pane (I tried my iPhone's Earpods and its microphone is recognized). I've tried all the usual suspects, resetting both the computer and the PRAM, and tried all the tricks that got it to work with other people- muting the mic, plugging in the inputs before plugging the splitter into my iMac, I even tried the MIDI setup and stared at it like a five year old.
Am I missing something? It seems to work for other people with the same headset and splitter. I'd like to exhaust all my options before forking over $40 for a Griffin iMic. Thanks.

Is yours a Rev. A or B iMac??
Not sure if this will work but try this, shut down and power down everything, detach all external peripherals you have (FW and USB, all the hubs, iPod etc etc) even the ethernet cable, pull out the main power cord too, let the iMac "rest" at least 15 mins, then attached back the main power cord.
Now plug in your FW drive and then start up the mac to see if your ext. HD mounts
Cheers

  • Intel iMac won't recognize external display with Dynex mini-DVI adapter

I've got an original Intel iMac with a Mini-DVI connection on the back. I'm attempting to hook it up to an external display (a plasma screen, in fact). I picked up a Dynex Mini DVI to Video Adapter DX-AP100 for Apple. This connector has a mini-DVI connector on one end, and both a video-out and an S-video-out on the other.
When attempting to use the adapter, the iMac does not recognize that there is an external display connected. Here are the facts:
The external display: I've tried this with a Panasonic Plasma screen connected directly through S-video, as well as a Pioneer receiver (one that switches video) connected both through s-video and composite video. And yes, I've got the settings on the TV correct. I've also tried this with a Polaroid LCD TV connected via S-video and composite video.
I did notice that when I click "Detect Displays" while the Plasma was connected, the plasma briefly "flashed", implying SOMETHING was happening, but still no dice.
Anyone have any experience with this Dynex DX-AP100 that could share some wisdom?

Yeah, I realize S-video is limiting, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. The TV is mounted to the wall and there are not currently any DVI or HDMI cables coming out of it. There's an S-video input from my receiver that I'd prefer to use since it's readily accessible already. In the end my goal is to use Netflix "Watch Now" on the TV, so I'm not too worried about video quality.
and before someone asks if I considered that the receiver's S-video input might be the problem...I tried taking the s-video wire from the stereo and plugging it directly into the adapter. No dice.
ONE ADDITIONAL PIECE of information...while trying to get this to work on an LCD monitor, I plugged the composite video connection from the TV into the adapter. Suddenly the Mac recognized an additional monitor, but it saw it as a VGA monitor, not as s-video or composite video, and no signal went to the TV.
I'm considering trading in this adapter for a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, but that really won't help me with the connection to the TV.

  • Late 2006 iMac won't recognize external monitor

My late 2006 iMac doesn't recognize an external VGA monitor connected via the mini-dvi port with adapter and cabling.
Doesn't show up in Displays System Preferences - at times the mouse does show up but not the full display.
Any suggestions - Am I missing something?

  • IMac won't recognize external CD/DVD burner

I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11. Five months ago, I purchased an external CD/DVD burner (Pioneer DVR-218L) in a multiple interface case from OtherWorldComputing. Everything worked flawlessly... I could burn iTunes CDs on that drive, using Toast I could copy DVDs from my internal drive to the external... life was good.
No longer. The computer simply doesn't recognize that there is an external burner attached.
I'm running it through with Firewire 400 cables, but I also tried Firewire 800 and USB2, with no luck. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and for one brief moment, thought I had licked the problem. I had a blank disk in the external drive and got a message saying that there was an unreadable disk, so I ejected it. Hooray! I put in a CD, which was recognized, momentarily. But when I went to copy those files to the computer, it was no longer recognized. And now I'm back where I was.
Very frustrating, because it had worked so smoothly and now it's not. I've spent much of today reading various message boards seeking an answer. Any suggestions?
    David

Something sporadic like that sounds more like a problem with the drive than with the computer or interface. You've tried several interfaces (FW, USB) which means it isn't just a bad port on the computer. If it was a bad bit of software I wouldn't expect the drive to briefly reappear like that.
When the drive is plugged in, what does Apple System Profiler say about Firewire or USB devices? It could be the enclosure is working but the drive itself is bad.
Have you phoned OWC about this? They have pretty good technical support and one reason for going with them is their reputation for standing behind their goods.

  • IMAC won't recognize external hard drive anymore

I am running snow leopard on my IMAC with all the latest software updates. I've been using a LaCie Quadra external hard drive with time machine for backups for awhile with no problems. From the beginning is was plug in the hard drive and go, the mac recognized it. Now, suddenly, it won't. When I turn on the LaCie to back up, the icon no longer pops on the desktop. It is also not listed in the Time Machine preferences anymore. I tried to open the LaCie from Mac systems preferences and get a message with something like "64 bit cannot recognize 32 bit" I am asked to close and reopen system preferences, which would change to 32 bit. I tried that and it did not work, and a report was sent to Apple. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Thanks

    jraguseo wrote:
Thanks. I don't disconnect the drive, only turn it off with it's own power switch. According to LaCie, this should not be a problem.
No, it's not a problem for the drive, but neither is leaving it (and Time Machine) on. Most externals will "spin down" after a few minutes of activity, but even if they don't, modern drives are built to run 24/7.
Time Machine was designed to do quick hourly backups of changes, and will protect you best that way. Just leave both Time Machine and the drive on; they'll be fine.

  • Twist won't recognize external microphone

This is a new problem. I do have an adapter and it has been working fine until a couple weeks ago. Even when I plut the external mic in now, the laptop continues to take its input through the built-in microphone. I really need to use the external capability. I've updated the audio driver. I have also updated the laptop to Windows 8.1. Can anyone help?

    Hi,
I actually tried using the pickups on my acoustic electric guitar, which has a small pre-amp, equalizer, and volume control.
As I said, I could clearly see in the Mac OS setup section that the audio was getting through, it's just that garage band insists on using the built in microphone instead, even when I've configured line-in as my mic source.
So, does anybody else have any ideas?
Has anybody had this problem too?
    Please let me know.
    Cheers.

  • IMac Won't Recognize external HDD

Hello Everyone,  I have been at this for eweeks to no end and no resolution.  I'll take you back to the beginning being as specific as I can.
I had a Macbook Pro and used my 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green for time machine backup.  Recently I purchaed an iMac so I set up th HDD to backup my new iMac with time machne and also use it for extra storage.  Worked seemlessly.  Then I noticed sometimes when I would try and access some of my files on the WD HD it would promt me for a password.  I found this to be annoying so I tried tweeking the permissions to allow read write for all users.  Probably not the best idea but I was annoyed having to constantly put in my password eberytime I watched a video.  Didn't work same old problem...So, I just said oh well.  Next I perpared to sell my Macbook Pro so I plugged in the external and began putting all of my files on it that I wanted to keep on the external.  The Macbook Pro was on Lion 7.2 I beleve.  I reisntalled Lion on it thinking it would wipe everyhing off the computer and I soon learned it did not.  It just brought me back to 7.0.  Got frustrated went to sleep.  Next day I plug my external into my iMac and I get nothing...Absolutley nothing...Does not show up under USB in System Profiler.  DOes not show up in disk utility and does not show up in FInder sidebar llike other usb devices do once mounted.  So, I mess around with cords restart computer, etc and get nothing still.  I unplug the exrnal plug it into the Macbook Pro and it works perfectly as it always has before.  Recognizes it intantly with no problems...So, with the Macbook Pro I ran disk utility and erased everything off the HD (I put all the data onto a different external and the iMac recognizes it perfectly fyi) and reformated it to MAC OS X Extended (Journaled) . When it finished I unmount it plug it into iMAc and still get nothing.  I screwed up somewhere along the lines of toying with the file permissions or reinstalling Lion again on the  Macbook Pro.  I have no idea what wnet wrong.  All I know is the Macbook Pro recognizes the drive but my new iMac will no longer recognize it at all.  I have since given the Macbook Pro to my buddy and have been trying to figure out what the **** is wrong with this drive.  Anyone with any ideas/suggegtions I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank You very much for your time.

  • New iMac won't recognize external drive

My Buffalo external drive won't show up on my new iMac (neither on the screen nor in Disk Utility. The only difference from when it was working before on my old iMac is the new firewire connection.

What kind of cable are you using, if it has a FW400 to FW800 adapter that is probably your problem. If the EHD only has FW on it and no FW 800 then I'd recommend a cable like this one. You can probably pick one up at your local computer store, Radio Shack or of course Amazon. You can also try doing a SMC reset.
    *SMC RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    *PRAM RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • IMac won't recognize external sources of data; iPhoto problems

My iMac doesn't see any source that I plug into a usb port. When I plug in my camera, it used to open iPhoto and download the pics, but now it doesn't do anything. If my mac is asleep when I plug in, it will wake up, but that's all. Flash drive the same. My MacBook can read them, so I know it isn't the camera or flashdrive. I have reinstalled OSX, and there is no change.
I also have been having a problem with iPhoto on my MacBook. When I import photos, they only appear in Last 12 Months, not in the current year or Last 12 Months. Is there a setting for this?

Correction: Imported photos only appear in Last Roll.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • IMac won't recognize midi device

IMac won't recognize midi device (Roland Fantom) which is connected via USB only; no midi interface. I have rebooted both the Roland and the iMac, still no go. I have manually added the midi device under Audio Midi setup, still none of my apps will recognize the device; Logic Pro, ProTools and Sibelius. How do I get this configured? I've read through some other posts and nothing has worked.

Its standard for all computers - if you have 3rd party things that do not work - contact that company - they may have a driver for you to download specific for mac.
Some 3rd party things are windows only - probably same for Mac.

  • IMac won't recognize DVD/CD drive anymore

As the title suggests, my iMac won't recognize my dvd drive anymore.
I don't know what the reason is for it.
I've never had this problem before, it happened a couple weeks ago.
I first noticed this when I tried burning a CD in iTunes.
It said at the top of the screen "Disc burner or software not found..."
I then went to System Profiler and checked "Disc Burning" and it
read, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." I'm not using an external device. I'm using the DVD drive that originally came with my iMac.
If anyone could please help me out with this I'd be very grateful.

Lately, I left my iMac on while I was sleeping. Couple nights ago, the optical drive made a funny noise and woke me up. It sounds very similar to opening up Disk Utility on my MacBook Pro, it looked for the internal optical drive. First, I didn't do further investigation on my iMac.
Yesterday, I happened to do some 'housecleaning' and attempted to slide in a data CD. The drive didn't response, so the CD was stuck. In the past, I had opened up numerous iMacs and they were getting more complicated model by model. I am certified to perform the repair, but since this iMac is covered under AppleCare, I decided to make an appointment with the MacGenius.
I did perform a PRAM reset earlier.
Do you have 'put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' checked under Energy Saver?
Out of all the Macs with slot-load optical drives built-in I have owned, this is the first malfunctioning I have ever had.

  • My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays.

My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays. I've tried using a third-party minidisplay port to DVI adapter, as well as an Apple-brand minidisplay port to VGA adapter. The monitor I'm using is a Dell SP2008WFPt. It is a functional monitor. I've tried resetting the PRAM, repairing my disk permissions, rebooting, and doing all sorts of wacky stuff with the order I plug things in. Is there a solution? It seems like lots of folks are having the same problem.
Thanks! This is really starting to make me angry.

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.

I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.  Any clues?  Nothing shows up in Finder as far as a Device, and I have a message telling me to "Insert a blank disc to begin" and that I will need a disc with at least "47.6 MB"--it's only 18 photos, and I need to burn them for a parent of a student (I'm a teacher).  I have tried several different discs, so it's not the actual CD or DVD.

Create a new folder. Place the photos in that.
From the Finder File menu choose New Burn Folder. That will appear on your desktop. Place the folder of photos  you created into that.
Now open Disk Utility and you will see that Burn Folder listed. Choose Burn from the menu.
