IMac Won't restart after Wi-Fi update 1.0

I installed the Feb. 24 Wi-Fi Update 1.0 and got the prompt to restart now, which I did. Now my iMAc will not restart. It hangs on the gray screen with the Apple logo. Any help?

Try restarting in Safe Mode , then navigate to System Preferences - Startup Disk and make sure the internal drive is highlighted. When it's highlighted then restart using the restart command in the preference and let the machine re-start normally.
If that does not help then attempt restarting, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery partition and then choose Disk Utility. While in DU Repair Disk Permissions (do it 2x to be safe) and while you are in DU it won't hurt to run Repair Disk as well. After you have completed both quit DU then restart normally to test.

IMac won't restart after latest security update

I have a late 2007 20" iMac with OS 10.10.2. While we were away last week I asked my son-ln-law to send me a photo off my iMac. He started the iMac and sent the file no problem. While he was on there he asked if he should run the security update while he checked the house so I said sure why not. He ran the update and came back in a few minutes and mac was off. He tried to restart it but it won't continue. It starts, the chime sounds, the Apple logo appears, it goes about 1/3 the way through the progress bar then sits there about 2 minutes and then shuts down. Trying to help with good intentions he found my Snow Leopard disk and inserted it thinking he might be able to use Disk Utility to eject the disk but since the disk is mounted an error message says the disk cannot be ejected. Not knowing what to do he just held the power button and it turned off.
Now that I'm back home I can't eject the SL disc and not sure what to do next. I've tried everything Kappy suggested here but nothing works. Unknown to my son-in-law I do have a Yosemite USB bootable drive but how do I run it with the SL disc in the DVD drive? I'm assuming I can restore from a time machine back up but with the SL disk in there does that cause a problem? I can see the Yosemite USB disk along with the SL disk in Disk Utility but not sure what to do if anything at this point. Suggestions?

Well I managed to get the Snow Leopard disk out and restarted the mac using OS X Recovery. I've selected the option to reinstall OS X. I'm at a screen that is asking me to 'Select the disk where you want to install OS X'. I'm presented two options one labeled 'EFI' and the other 'Recovery HD'. I chose the later but it's been sitting on a spinning beach ball for 30 minutes now so I can't select 'Install' to proceed. Any idea what has happened to my mac? A hard drive failure I assume or something else?

IMac won't restart after latest Safari update.

I just downloaded the latest Safari update (5.1.2) on my iMac (27", i7, latest Snow leopard). The download (via software update) and install went smooth but when asked to restart, it hangs up at the gray screen...after the blue screen/start up chime, but before the apple logo appears. I tried shutting down and rebooting but it keeps hanging at the same place.

Thank you for the replies...
I did manage to solve the problem right away by following the instructions offered by Apple: Remove all USB cables, then do a hard reboot. Then to isolate the cable causing the problem, plug in one at a time and reboot until the problem happens again. In my case, the issue was caused by a Flip Camera that was plugged into a USB hub.
I hope this helps those with a similar problem.

IMac won't restart after installing OS X 10.6

All I get after installing Mac OSX 10.6 Lion, is a spinning wheel of death. What is going on that it won't restart properly?

Nevermind, I have found a work around. Have to start in "safe mode" then the Setup Assistant will launch properly and the Software Update also works properly.
On to Lion & 10.8!

IMac won't restart after updating to 10.6.8

I just installed the update of Mac os x from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8 and I clicked on install and restart in system updater and my computer usually goes to the blue screen for a split second before it shuts down and restarts, well it stayed for more than a split second. I installed it at around 5, it's now 12. It hasn't shut down yet and it's still stuck on the blue screen. It seems to be stuck on the booting down process. Any suggestions? I'm somewhat computer savvy but use layman's terms please.

A couple of things to try...
Firstly... use the Power Switch to turn it Off...

If you are still not happy... Download and Install the Combo Update:

And it probably wouldn't hurt to do a Permissions Repair (using Disc Utility) and a Restart

IMac won't boot after OSX Intel update crash - Newbie needs help please!

at the weekend I updated OSX on my IMac 17 with an Intel update. An error message said that the update could not be installed and that the update was sent to the trash - a restart was requested. Since that shutdown my Mac chimes and gets stuck at the white load screen (hard drive is quiet).
I've tried the following:
Holding Shift key upon boot to initiate Safe Mode - No Joy!
Apple+S to run disk utlity/console - cannot initiate to cmd prompt!
Just as a little background - I'm a recent Apple convert and typical Windows defector. I've seen the light after many years in M**soft environments (I even trained to MCSE) but my Mac OS knowledge is considerably lacking. Let's be honest - so far I haven't had any problems.
Any gentle help would be most appreciated folks - I'm not sure where to start and I want my baby back!

Same here. I have an iMac 20". It has been upgraded to Leopard and running fine since I purchased it 2 weeks ago. I downloaded the latest OS/X update (100+MB in size) but the installation failed. The system requested a reboot but it has not been able to ever since. It simply keeps beeping with a white screen. I put the Leopard DVD in, held the "C" key, but nothing works. Now I have a system that won't work. From now on, I will shy away from getting the latest update .... I am planning to take it to the apple store

IMac won't restart after crash

Hi all,
While surfing the Web with Safari, the system crashed, that is the display was blocked, it was possible to move the cursor with the mouse but nothing else, <option><Command><esc> was inactive as well, so I restarted the computer with the power button.
Then I got a very funny screen, with a kind of "Vichy" pattern, that is full of small pink squares. I could see the apple logo with the turning wheel for while, then nothing, no reaction to the mouse or the keyboard (I plugged a USB KB).
I restarted the imac several times, with the same result each time.
Eventually, I launched the full Apple Hardware Test utility. After a 45 minutes, the test did not detect any HW problem.
I restarted then the mac again, and everything was fine again.
So the basic problem is solved but I don't have any idea of what can have been wrong and why it's OK again.
In the system log I only have that that seems suspicious:

Unfortunately I don't have yet another Mac (though this can be the chance!)
i found another way: when I boot on the install disc, I can open a terminal and I have then access to my 'Macintosh HDD, with all its data (basically the 'Users' folder, and I have access as well to external HDD (as long as they are formatted OSX apparently, those formatted for windows cannot be mounted by the disk utility).
I tried a basic "CP -R adirectory_inUsers destin_firewireHDD" and it seems to work. As soon as I get a new external HDD I'll try to copy all my data in this way.

Won't Restart after latest Security Update Download.

Yesterday I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard. It downloaded but would not restart. I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack. I did what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work. I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball. I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out. I tried to use an older System disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it. I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail. Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail. Nothing to do with the Security update. Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....

No one on the Apple site could help me so I took it into Tekserve in NYC. I was afraid that I was going to have to replace the entire Hard Drive but they finally managed to get it working. In the end for $60 they reinstalled the System, keeping all of my files intact. I have a bootable external drive, but I was happier not to have to use that. Apparently it was a multilevel problem, and not something anyone can fix themselves. If you look at the Apple discussions quite a few people had problems with that update.....

20" imac won't restart after rebooting under bootcamp running Windows XP. I get a black DOS screen with an error message.

My imac has been running without problems under OS X Snow Leopard and bootcamp running Windows XP for a long time. I had received a Sony MP3 player and wanted to install the software on my computer. At the time I had a CD in my drive slot because I was getting ready to install some brother's software for a printer I wanted to use. I restarted my imac under bootcamp and started installing the Sony software in Windows XP. I was having problems with the install and decided to restart XP to see if that would help. It's been several days since this originally happened so I'm not of sure of any more specifics at this point other than I've had to use windows machines for a long time and know that basically when in doubt "restart".
When my imac was restarting I heard everything spinning up, the white light came on, but I heard no chime, a blue screen came up for about 15 to 30 sec. and then it went to a black screen with DOS characters giving the following message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.
I do have a copy of Windows XP, but my first problem was that I still had a CD in the slot and it would not eject. I tried every keyboard combination I could find including: eject button, F12 and holding down the mouse button at start-up and nothing worked. I also tried every other start-up keyboard combination I could find at Apple Support jut to see if I could get my imac to start up under OS X . I finally went on youtube to find out how to remove the CD. I ended up opening up my imac and taking off the cover of the CD drive to remove the disk. After putting everything back together I put in my Windows CD and tried restarting again. The exact same thing happened and I ended up at the DOS screen. Then I thought maybe my keyboard wasn't working so I replaced it with a new one. Same result. I also thought to plug both of my apple keyboards into my windows 8 laptop (hate it!) to see if they worked there at all. They both did so I'm sure the keyboards are not the problem.
At this point, since I do now have a windows 8 laptop (hate it!) there is no remaining reason for me to keep a bootcamp partition on my hard drive. My question is where do I go from here? I have a current time machine back-up on an external hard drive and I have my install CD for OS X Snow Leopard. How do I get my imac back up and running? Thanks.

Can you OPTION boot? If so, then choose the OS X volume to boot back into OS X. From there you can use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows volume and restore the drive.
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
      left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
      your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
        /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

IMac won't reboot after recent wifi update

27 inch iMac running Lion OSX. Installed the recent wifi update that popped up in software update and now the iMac hangs on the gray boot screen. Ideas?

Try a safe boot. Hold the Shift key down between the start up tone and the Apple logo/pinwheel.
If successful, Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk > Select your MacIntosh HD and restart.

IMac won't restart after setting up

1. my imac is brand new. just came in 1h ago
2. i turned the power on and set it up. connected wireless keyboard and mouse. set up was successfully and i could work around the desktop for a few minutes.
3. decided to put in the mac os x installation cd (did not read instruction that set up was just all those in #2)
4. imac restarts and has not gone past white screen with apple logo and flashing wheel.
what should i do?

i have a Mac Mini that's about 1.5 years old. I ran time machine and downloaded Maverick and installed it. It went to restart and never came back on. Any ideas?

Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
     after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
     Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Imac won't restart after time machine restore

I restored my external firewire 800 hard drive from a time machine restore using my snow leopard insall disk. The restore function said the restore was successful. But when the computer restarted I got the folder with the question mark icon. My internal hard drive went bad a year ago.
What to do?

Did you restore the entire contents of your Mac from the Time Machine backup? Was Time Machine backing up everything?
Try booting with an "option" key held down. That will show the internal disk volume if it has a bootable copy of OS X on it.
You might try installing OS X over the top of what's currently on the disk. If that doesn't help, erase the disk, install OS X on it, then use Setup Assistant (unless I'm misremembering and it's actually Migration Assistant) to transfer the TIme Machine contents again.
Incidentally, after things are working again, the first time Time Machine runs it will back up everything again.

Like what happens? Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick. A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks. That will do it too.
