  • IMac won't boot OsX Partition after Bootcamp install/uninstall.

    Hello,
I have bought 2 late 2012 21.5 iMacs last year and have used both the same way. Here is what happened with one of them recently.
Fisrt af all I've installed bootcamp 1 year ago in both iMacs without issues and was ok so far, and was using exclusively Windows 7 partition. The trouble iMac started with some startup issues during boot/reboot (screen was frozen with green/grey horizontal lines), but worked fine after following manual start up.
Lately I've been trying to boot from OsX partition and it freezes in the apple logo every time.
I have already done the SMC / PRAM procedures, without success.
I have tried to download and do a fresh OsX install (Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite). Can't boot from Mavericks / Yosemite flash drive install (both freeze at apple logo - horizontal lines), and only had partial success with one Mountain Lion 10.8.5 flash drive install that booted all right and the first part of the installation process was ok, but after the initial reboot, it happened to freeze the same way before.
The iMac failed to boot in safe mode (stops booting at 25% and then freezes on apple logo), and show no issues with AHT tests.
I can boot in single user mode, but it reboots after a few seconds. I noticed some errors messages during this boot.
It fails to boot in verbose mode, showing a few lines of errors (images attached), and then freezes in a green horizontal line screen.
I can still boot from Bootcamp flash drive and Ubuntu Flash drive, and install both OS. The only issue is with OsX itself. I have used Gparted in Ubuntu to Format the hole partition to HFS+, and can't find any errors in hard drive tests.
I thought about buying a thunderbolt cable and try to do a Clone of my other iMac, but don't know if it will work.
Any other tests/suggestions about this issue?
    Regards,

Fixed the problem with this setup
Of course this means i just lost 4GB.
Let me tell the full story.
In the beginning, long ago, once upon a time. My iMac had 2x2GB ram sticks which were in the two DIMM1 Banks. I then told myself "I WANT MORE RAM BECAUSE LOLZ". So i bought 2x4GB ram sticks. The two empty slots were Bank 0/DIMM0 and Bank 1/DIMM 0. and I added them in there. having done that, I booted OS X up, worked great, had 12GB, everything was shiny and beautiful. Soon after I wanted to try it out on windows. I restarted my computer and BAM the blinking cursor just sits there, being stubborn and all. I then told myself "holy balls, this new ram i got is bonkers" (them words, I blame the language filter). Then after giving it a little thought, i just asked myself if it was because I had ram from two different manufacturers. I removed my old ram, which has nice Samsung stickers on them, and booted it up on windows. Still had the same problem, I then decided that maybe this is all really mentally challenged so to win I had to think like a retard. I took my new ram and inserted it in the same slots where my old ram sticks were (DIMM1 Banks), booted windows up and IT WORKED.
I still hold all of my WHYs on this subject but I will keep messing around to see if I find a better solution than just leaving both DIMM0 banks empty

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

  • IPhoto 5 won't publish to .Mac after Leopard install.

Ever since I installed Leopard (clean install) I have been having problems with iPhoto crashing while trying to publish a homepage to my .Mac account. I made sure it was fully patched (OS and iPhoto), repaired permissions, all the obvious stuff. Anyone else having this trouble or have a fix for it?
    Regards.

After further review I found there was one more step to reproduce, and a solution.
Using the iPhoto batch change, I always use "short date". Those file names are imported without change to Aperture. iPhoto uses the "/" and apparently Aperture doesn't escape that Unix special character properly when writing or reading to the filesystem. So it gets interpreted as a directory!
BTW Aperture uses "-" as a separator for dates in filenames. So I am now changing the name on import to Aperture and all is well.
Seems weird answering my own question, but I hope this post helps someone with the same problem until Apple fixes this bug.

  • TS5221 my IMAC won't see my new iphone5S?

I plug it in just like the I Phone 4S and my IMAC won;t see it as a device? Also the transfer they did at the store lost all my inforamation?  Ihad to set up all my emails again?? This never happened when I bought the Iphone 4S.

Hi - is the Firewire drive a Western Digital MyBook? That's what I have and have exactly the same problem. I've got a late 2009 iMac and the only way it'll connect and be seen is via USB. The drive will happily connect to my previous gen iMac, it just seems it won't talk to the 27 inch via Firewire.
I did some searching on this 18 months ago and found others with the same problem so I've settled for USB. It does mean that via USB I can use it as a bootable clone if I have any problems with the 27" (I don't think the WD MyBook can boot via Firewire even if it could see the drive - could be wrong on this bit though ).

  • My new imac won't operate youtube even after installing the latest flash

my new imac won't operate youtube even after installing the latest flash

    Problem solved!
I had downloaded and then installed Flash, and restarted.
The problem?  I was expecting Youtube to work as on my old PC, where you get a little pop-up menu at the bottom of the TV screen to play. pause etc.  That won't happen on a Mac until  you click on the oblong that says Flash in the middle - I didn't know that!
    Hooray!

  • Fan  problem after Leopard install

PowerMac Dual G5 - after Leopard install, fan between hard drive and optical drive revved up like the computer was going to blast off, faster and faster until I powered down by holding down the power button. Leopard seems to be working fine, but with the fan continuing to go at high speed at all times. I've tried reboot, reinstall, pull plug for a few minutes, remove CMOS battery, and zap PRAM, all to no avail. I haven't put the panel cover back on yet, and that may work, but I won't have time to mess with it for a few days and hope for some insight before I try that.Ideas?

Problem went away. Must have been a ghost in the machine.

  • Kodak 5500 - cannot print after Leopard install

Just want to throw this printer into the list of printers that do not work after Leopard install. I get a raster stream error. I have reinstalled Kodak software; deleted and readded printer, etc, etc,. Still now printing. Scanning works fine though!

Much to my surprise, I received a reply from Kodak a mere few hours after emailing them on Sunday morning. They advised me that a new version of their all-in-one printer software (1.2.0 Release 3) for Leopard will be available on the web on Monday, October 29th.

  • After Leopard install I have 2 volumes of equal size

After Leopard install I have 2 volumes of equal size. One has Leopard and the other has Tiger. How can I delete, remove, or get rid of the volume with Tiger on it? As I have upgraded to Leopard how can tell which one I have, i.e., 10.5 or 10.5.X?
    Thanks for your help.

For some reason the Leopard installer kept your old Tiger partition instead of deleting it. It's probably your fault, but that doesn't matter...
Before you do this, back up any data you still want from the Tiger partition. Also rename it to something that will differentiate it from your other volume(s?). Also back up your Leopard partition before any of this.
Take your Leopard install disk, pop it in, reboot while holding C (or just click Install Leopard), choose a language, then from the menubar click Utilities, then Disk Utility. Once there, click your hard drive (not your Leopard or Tiger volumes) in the sidebar, go to the Partition tab on the right, click your Tiger volume's square (NOT YOUR LEOPARD VOLUME!!!), click the minus sign under that little graph, and click Partition. Then once that's done, drag the little resize line thingy on the bottom-left of your Leopard volume's square so that it fills up the entire area there.
If you can't make the Leopard volume take up the entire drive, you'll have to wipe the entire hard drive and restore from a backup. Yes, you will have to unless you're okay with having less space then you can. (Why can't GParted resize HFS+?!?! WHY?!!?!?!!??!)

  • IMac won't see HDD, no matter what I do - Please help!!!!

    Hi,
I have a 2009 iMac 24in (4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm) and ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I have one problem after another. I have erased the HDD on numerous occasions, 7 and 35pass, due to it not seeing the HDD, have tested (iDisk) the HDD and all seems fine, reset PRAM & SMC, tried safe mode etc, but nothing seems to work.
It will boot from CD, but every time I try to install, it won't see the HDD. I have tried connect via Firewire to another Mac, but only on one occasion was the HDD seen; that said, I was able to retrieve data, so at least that's one saving grace.
It's still under warranty, so I'll be taking it to Apple and dumping it on them, but given that I cannot afford to buy another Mac to replace this one, I was hoping that someone could give me a few pointers to getting this going, whilst my MacBook Pro is being sorted out.
Yes, I have two Macs in trouble (MBP has black screen), but I need one working for business use, whilst the other is being sorted out.
I really hope that someone can help me with this one, as I'm pulling my hair out!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
There's no doubting the cost per GB, particularly from Apple, but would I be wrong to assume that my overall user experience would not be better with SSD, than with HDD; taking cost to one side of course.
I use my Macs for business and quite honestly, the downtime I have experienced is more costly than the extra cost per GB of an SSD.
Appreciate that SSD technology is fairly new, but I work in the Film and TV industry and nearly every new camera with on-board recording is using SSD technology and I don't hear of many complaints or issues, as far as reliability and stability of the technology is concerned.
I do accept that an SSD in a computer is going to be doing a helluva lot more work, but the technology has to be better right?
Ultimately, am I making a good move or another making another howler by opting for SSD over HDD?? I acknowledge that's very broad question and open to a lot of opinions/personal preferences etc, etc.
    Thanks.

  • Mac won't boot after leopard install

hi - installed leopard on my imac but now my mac won't boot:
i have already tried the following:
    1) safe mode - but won't boot
    2) single user mode - ran fsck - said no issues
    3) did target mode with firewire cbale to my macbook and ran disk utility - no repairs needed - and i can see all my files on original computer
    4) reinstalled leopard from holding down options key - leopard installed again
but for all of abv - when i reboot i still get white apple logo screen and the spinning wheel...
any other way to get into safe mode - as that is only thing i have not been able to start....
    thanks!
    susan

    tigerswim, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you already have Tiger installed or did you have Panther 10.3 installed? Tiger is not a free upgrade; you have to buy it & then update (for free) using the download updates from Apple. Also, you have to use a universal/retail install DVD (or CDs) to install Tiger. You cannot use the install DVD from another model Mac.

  • IPhone sync after freshly installing Leopard

So today I finally got Leopard in. So I decided to back up all my photos and music on my iPhone and just sync it back into iTunes and iPhoto after I install a fresh copy of Leopard on my computer. So I tried to sync my iPhone to iTunes AFTER I authorized the computer and it only transfered over my "purchased" songs. I want to transfer all my songs (including many mp3's) and my photos as well. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something?
Also, everytime I try to sync it it tells me that this iPhoto is synced with another library...but that library was completed deleted when I erased my disk to install a fresh copy of Leopard.
    Ideas???

I like how sure everyone is that you can't transfer your photos, videos and pictures from your iPhone to your computer. Don't listen to them. Just do a google search on transfering stuff from iPhone to your computer and you'll see some programs, like Tansee iPhone Copy Pack 1.0, you can download. You can probably find one that has a 30 day trial period which should be enough time to get all your stuff back on your computer.

  • IMac won't boot, dark screen after normal grey start up screen

Quite perplexed with this problem, have tried everything I can think of.
Computer: iMac 2.16 gHz 24" mid 2006, 4 gig RAM
    OS: 10.6.8
Froze and required hard shutdown.  Subsequent to this, has behaved consistently:
Normal grey screen with Apple logo and spinning timer, can hear disk activity. Then the screen goes dark and nothing else happens (although the computer is still on).  Have to  perform hard shutdown.
    Have tried:
    1. Booting into single user mode (multiple times) and performed fsck, no errors noted
    2. after using 'exit' command in single user mode, computer attempts to reboot but then freezes after noting 'panic'
    3. Reset PRAM (no change)
    4. Tried safe mode boot, progress bar on grey screen progresses, then spinning timers comes on, then same crash with dark screen
    4. Disassembled computer, removed hard drive, mounted normally in external SATA enclosure.  I backed up critical data, ran Disk Utility Repair, no errors noted.
    5. Reinstalled HD, reassembled computer, rebooted, same issue
    6. Attmepted to boot with Snow Leopard Install disc to perform a fresh Achive and Install - after prolonged grey screen with spinning timer and audible DVD drive access, same switch to dark screen and no further progress
    7. Same panic message and stalled boot attempt noted when booting into single user mod
I'm stumped.  My assumption is that there is a courrpt file that is causing a kernel panic during boot and I assumed that I'd be able to perform an archive and install but when this failed I'm guessing all I can do is replace the hard drive with a new one and then go through the hassle of transferring all the data over manually.
I would welcome hearing any other observations, similar experiences or other ideas.  MTIA.

One update ... when I boot the computer and get the 'dark screen',  I hear disc activity.  So I started hitting the return key and I get the chime with each return as if I'm on the log in screen and hitting the return to log in without entering any text.
That would argue there is a problem with the screen.
However, it does not explain why the computer display works normally during single user mode and hangs (without the screen going dark) when trying to reboot from this mode.

  • IMac won't always wake up after Magic Mouse installed.

I have a 24" iMac and just bought a Magic Mouse. I am running 10.6.1. I WAS running 10.6.2, but had problems getting the iMac to wake from sleep ever since I installed the Magic Mouse. I reverted back to 10.6, and updated to 10.6.1 to get the new MM update installed.
It seems that if it is asleep for an hour or so, it won't wake up. I end up having to reboot. I have tried the setting to allow Bluetooth to wake the computer both ON and OFF. I have reset SMC, and PRAM. I'm thinking it may be a software issue, but I am at my wits end.
Has anyone found a cure for this?
    Thanks!

If you have the iMac plugged in to an old or crowded power strip, as a test, connect it directly to a wall outlet to see of that makes any difference.
Peripheral devices (USB/FireWire) devices can interfere with sleep, wake, shutdown, and startup. Try going through the SMC reset procedure, as shown here (procedure recently changed by Apple)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and disconnect ALL cables. Power up with nothing connected except for the power cord. Connect just your keyboard and mouse, then doing sleep and wake.
Also, make sure the batteries in the Magic Mouse are not getting low. You should try removing them for a few minutes and then putting them back. You should also try re-pairing the mouse at System Preferences Mouse pane +Set Up Bluetooth Mouse+ button.
