IMac won't shut down or restart

My iMac 10.6.4 has been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. It will not shut down or restart unless I push the power button. The little wheel just keeps spinning on the blank screen. I'm not sure but I think shutting down with the power button may not be good for the machine. I do know that when I do start the machine it takes longer than usual. Watching the progress bar, it almost seems to be resetting. I have not installed any major apps prior to the problem beginning. I've run Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, and Tech Tool but none of them have found any problem. I've also have repaired permissions several times (although I have found one exception: "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired." I'm not sure how important it is or if it's even needed. I don't know how it was modified). Sorry for the long explanation but I'm hoping someone can help. Much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Bob

Hi - you mention OS X 10.6.4 but your profile shows 10.6.5. If you did update to 10.6.5 using software update try downloading the combo installer: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 and re-applying the update. It seems to fix all kinds of strange behaviour. Worth repairing permissions before and after the update.

  • Booting from remote disc on MBA that won't shut down or restart?

    Hi all,
I am trying to do an archive and install on my partner's MBA because, even after running through all the possible options with Applecare, it won't shut down or restart. I have already reinstalled the software on another machine that was having the same problem and the issue has been resolved.
My problem is, however, in trying to boot the MBA off a remote disc. I can, of course, access the Mac OSX install disc remotely from the MBA in another optical drive, but when I begin the install process and it wants to restart the MBA, the MBA hangs up and doesn't restart (because that was it's problem in the first place).
The MBA and the Mac running the install disc are both connected via ethernet through my Airport hub. As you can't simply hold the C key during startup with the MBA, I was wondering if there is any way to get the MBA to find the remote disc on start up?
    Thanks.

How did you transfer your "settings"?
If you used the Migration Assistant you are obviously transferring something that is causing an issue. Erase and reinstall Mac OS X and then manually transfer your documents to your MacBook.

  • HT4623 iPad won't shut down or restart. Apple flashes on and off. How can this be fixed?

iPad won't shut down or restart. Apple flashes on and off. How can this be fixed?

My ipad also does not shut down. I've tried to reboot a million times (holding down the home and power buttons simultaneously). I've tried resetting everything (after successfully backing up on iCloud). I tried the remote reboot (backing up ipad on iCloud, then on a separate computer, log on to iCloud, locate your device, clear all, reboot everything). Nothing worked. Took the ipad to the tech dept at the store, and they said its a mechanical failure of the power button, either the sensor or spring. Without the extended warranty, costs $250 to fix, because the screen is glued down to the machine. With the warranty, they would have replaced it for free. Ugh. My ipad is 1.5 years old. It would have been covered. But it shouldn't be so easy to damage! Outrageous that ipads are so glitchy at this price point. Outside techies can fix, but the machine could be damaged because of the way it's made.
Another option the techie at apple told me about, which won't shut down the ipad but will take it to the locked home screen, is go to Settings, General, Accessibility, under physical and motor, turn on the Assistive touch. That adds a button to the screen. Select Device, then Lock, and that takes you straight to the black screen. Not a total power down but maybe it burns through the battery less.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • IBook won't shut down or restart

    Hello all!
I havent been able to shut down or restart my iBook! A friend of mine used my computer and I didnt know she stuck in one of those USB plug-ins (sorry, I dont know what its called) and pulled it out without ejecting properly and since then I see this disc logo marked "CDR" on my desktop that won't eject no matter how many times I drag it to trash and now just realized I can't shut down or restart my iBook. Help!!!
    Many thanks!

    Hi golfpunkgirl
    Welcome to discussions
Which iBook is it - the White iBook has a Reset Button slightly to the right above the audio / videoport
Close all open apps then carefully using a paper clip gently press the button.
If you have the booklet that came with the machine you can see it on the diagram
This will force a reset on the machine - check out time /date afterwards

  • Upgraded to 10.4.8-My Powerbook G4 won't shut down or restart

Upgraded this weekend from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8 and now my PowerBook G4 12" won't shut down. Nor will it restart.
It does clear the screen of the menu bar and all items on the desktop, but that is all. Desktop picture remains the same. There is no indication of any activity but it never proceeds farther than that. Shutdown and restart both act the same way.
    Solutions?
I can turn off the computer using the power switch when this happens. Then I reboot by pushing the power switch again.
I've also tried repairing permissions which seems not to have changed anything.
It's quite a nuisance. Any ideas on solutions?

OK, you may have deeper problems. First, go to System Preferences/Accounts, and make a 'Test" account, with full admin privileges. Switch to that account, by logging out of the manin account (Apple Menu), and see if you still have the same symptom. If you do, and Archive and Install might be the cure.
Note: Save the combo update, to perfrom the upgrade again.

  • IMac won't shut down after using Time Machine

Here is the thing: My iMac (late 2009, 24", 8 GB RAM) won't shut down when I use my external HD for Time Machine. After the back up I try to eject the external HD but the icon won't disappear on the screen, it only gets blank and is not clickable anymore. It is still visible in the menu of the Finder but with no ejection sign anymore. Programs that were open before won't close even if I use the forced shut down function. But it seems like they are closed as they don't appear on the list anymore. When I then try to shut down the whole system the screen goes black and the wheel turns for hours! So that I finally have to shut it down manually.
This happens only after using the external HD for the back ups and when I then try to eject it. If I don't eject it everything goes normal. If I don't connect it everything goes normal. Sure, you might say, hey leave it plugged in then. But as it is a 3 TB HD I also use it for my MBP so I have to eject it
Is this a known issue or a bug in the system of Yosemite? With Mavericks everything worked really well - no problems at all. On the MBP (late 2011, i7, 8 GB RAM) it also works well. So I am kind of annoyed the I always have to shut the iMac down manually which can't be that healthy for the system.
Any insights on that issue are highly appreciated - thanks a lot!
    Birgit

Okay, just realized that the same problem occurs with the MBP after rejecting the external HD
Icon gets blank, cannot be clicked anymore, while shutting down the MBP normally the screen goes black and the wheel is turning forever but nothing else happens. So I have to force it to shut down.
It seems to be a general problem with connecting an external HD once in a while for doing a time machine back up regularly and then eject it. So the question is: who has the same problem or does everybody have their HD permanently connected to their Macs for Back ups? Either by USB or WLAN? It never was a problem wit Mavericks and I don't want to permanently back up my system every hour - once a week is good for me BUT this cannot be adjusted in the time machine settings which would be a very good idea.
Any solution is still highly appreciated !!
    Thanks a lot,
    Birgit

  • My computer won't shut down or restart b/c it says that I need to close Safari.  However, my Macbook won't allow me to shut down Safari.  How do I resolve this?

How do I get my Macbook Pro to shut down.  It won't allow me to, b/c it says that Safari needs to close.  However, Safari is closed, and when I re-open Safari to try to Quit Safari, it isn't in bold to allow me to Quit.  How do I resolve this issue?

    Force Quit .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.
    Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select the application if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
    Wait.
    Application will quit.
If this does not help, press the power button for 7 or more seconds.
    Computer will shut down.
    Restart.

  • IMac will not shut down or restart using the apple menu

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu.  The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer.  This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi...
Before you shut down, make sure you "quit" all open applications. Applications are running if you see the small blue reflection under the app's name in your Dock.
If necessary, you can force quit apps... several ways to do this.  One, from your Apple menu > Force Quit or using the Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities.
If it's not a question of open applications, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • G4 won't shut down only restarts

I've been using the comptuer without a battery & it was working fine. There was a blackout on Saturday, though computer was not on at time. Sunday computer worked fine, but printer didn't work. When I went to shut down computer it just restarted.
Bought new battery today. Reset PMU & installed new battery. Started computer with only keyboard & monitor attached. Worked OK & shut down OK. Then reattached perpherials & now won't shut down again.
What should I do? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Fish

Thanks for the input Hatter. Can you tell me how to do the fsck -fy procedure or tell me where to find the directions?
For the longest time, when I read " fsck -fy" I actually thought the writer was politely swearing. I really have no idea what it is or does, but found some sketetal instructions in the discussions, so tried it. But I don't have enough info to do it correctly.
I am more in favor of reset nvram from inside Open
    Firmware
    cmd opt of
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
which I think does a better job dealing or clearing
corrupt nvram or device tree on MDDs and later Macs.
Also, I have no idea what you are talking about, where or how to do it. Open Firmware?? Is this something I open up? where is it? etc.
Now that you mention it, buying a new hub makes sense if your other suggestions don't work.
I hope I hear from you again. Thanks for your help. Fish

  • RMBP 15 won't shut down or restart - cannot update software

    Hi,
For about the last 3 months I've been unable to shut down or restart my Macbook Pro (retina) 15", OS version 10.8.2.  Additionally, selecting 'Restart' or 'Shutdown' from either the Apple menu or when an application wants to complete in update still results in the system doing nothing.  I've left it overnight after selecting 'Shutdown' from a menu and it's been running in the morning - so definitely not a slow shutdown problem.
I have gone through the recovery mode process to reinstall the OS, repaired disk permissions, run a Safe Boot, run Onyx and a number of other things.  I even removed the com.apple.dock.plist and .dock files as suggested elsewhere (I have many of the lsboxd messages in my console), I even disabled the notification center... but the problem persists.
I was running Sophos AV for a while and removing this didn't seem to improve the 'unable to shut down' issue, but I am no longer experiencing system freezes every 2-3 days.
I haven't found many helpful events in the Console.  I did check the install.log, and I have the following event each time I select 'Restart' to apply an App Store update:
SUAppStoreUpdateController: prepare for root mode with 041-xxxx...
It seems that usually I can 'sudo reboot', however there are times when the system is unresponsive even to this so I end up having to hard power-off using the button.
I have also been unable to get Boot Camp to work despite following the apple.com support manual - a bootcamp partition is mounted in OSX but I am unable to select it to install Win7 or boot to it.
As I don't live near an Apple store my options to visit a genius bar are limited.  It is frustrating that not only is Mountain Lion on the rMBP considerably slower to boot or recover from sleep than Lion on my 2011 MBP13, but I'm now unable to update any software that may fix the issues I am having.
Are there any suggestions as to how I may be able to resolve this problem?  Has anyone experienced something similar?
I would be most grateful for any assistance.
    Thanks,
    Discom

    Hi softwater,
Thank you for the suggestion.  I haven't looked into Carbon Copy Cloner previously, I'll check it out.
I'll see what I can do about getting to a store.  I've only just had the MBP13 get a logic board replacement, for which it had to be in store for a week, so I'll have to make plans to move data around so I can keep working while it's out of action.
I won't be able to take it to a store for at least another week, so if anyone else has an (unlikely) solution in the meantime I'd be very appreciative!
    Thanks
