Imac won't update OS X 10.8 to 10.8.1

Installed OS x 10.8 Mountain Lion on my wife's Imac under my Apple account.  Now the iMac will not update to 10.8.1.  My Macpro has done so okay. Any ideas as to solution.

If you are using the same App Store account for both your computers, then it should update. If she is using a different App Store account for buying App's, then you may need to re-purchase it for her computer using her App Store account.

  • Calendar from iMac won't update iPad  or iPhone

Changes to my calendar on iMac won't go to my iPad or iPhone, however changes on iPad & iPhone show up on IMac calendar.  So what am I missing to do on my iMac for it to sync properly with other devices?
    iMac - Yosemite 10.10.1
    iPad - 8.1.2
    iPhone 6.6.6
Everything syncs OK on my old iPod!

My friend had the same problem.
One reason might be because of iOS on your iPhone.
For my friend, he turned on iCloud Drive on iPad but not on other devices, so his MBP and iPhone were communicating fine, but not with iPad. Then he turned on iCloud Drive on all his devices, then they all synced finally.

  • IMac will no longer sync iPad-get message that iPad has version 11.1 and iMac has 10.6.3, yet iMac won't update to 11.1

When I tried to sync my iPad to my iMac tonight, I get a message that my iPad 2 cannot be used because it requires iTunes 11.1 or later. Yet when I check for updates in iTunes on my iMac, it tells me 10.6.3 is the current version. When I got to apple.com and try to download an iTunes update, it says it is downloading, but nothing happens.

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    says
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    your signature says
    Mac OS X (10.5.8)

  • System Preferences Crash/iMac won't update

Noob here, so I apologize in advance for any protocol violations. I haven't been able to update any software on my iMac since 10/10/08. The list of software updates is present and current, with all downloads completed, and the "Install 5 Items" button present. Once that button is clicked, it goes gray, appearing to start the install, then immediately goes back to blue, ready to be clicked again. This goes in loop until I cancel the update.
I then went into System Preferences, curious if a permissions issue existed, however, whenever I try to open Accounts, System Preferences errors out and closes, giving me the option to Ignore, Report, or Relaunch. This also occurs on a variety of different System Preferences objects (Date & Time, Time Machine, Parental Control).
I have searched extensively online for any hint of help, but this seems to be a unique problem (or I have real poor skills on the Google).
Thanks in advance for ANY help,
    Nate

The most common cause of this type of behavior is a corrupted preference file. Try trashing the following files located in your home/library/preferences folder
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and
    com.apple.finder.plist
just drag both files into the trash and then empty the trash
Then restart your computer. A new finder preference file will be created automatically upon restart. As soon as you open system preferences a new preference file for it will be created.
You will have to reset some of your finder preferences and a few other preferences after doing this but it should solve the problem. However, there are no guarantees.

  • My iMac won't update past 10.9.2

I restart it; it restarts to software update installer ...and hangs.  And nothing install

    Downloading via updater
    Noting works
This happens every time  I have a 2.8 ghz i

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • IMac won't update to the newer version.

My iMac OS X running version 10.7.5 is not able to detect a newer version. Every time I try to download an app it denies and says that version 10.8 or above is required. Is there a manual I can update it myself?

If you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.x), it would necessitate a purchase - it is not an update, but a newer operating system. If your Mac supports it, you can go to the app store and purchase it for $20.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. It's year of manufacture is 2007 and when I try to install Snow Leopard it now says that it cannot be upgraded on the iMac. Normally it wouldn't bother me but Chrome and Firefox no longer support 10.5! Do I need a new Mac?

Are you using gray system disks from another mac? Normally that message means you're trying, for example, to use disks delivered with a MacBook to install on an iMac. The system disks are locked to the systems they are delivered with and can't be used on other mac hardware.
If that's the case here, call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE, and order a retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.

  • IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update

After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected.  I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally.  I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected.  Anyone else experience this?

  • My wife's iPad 2 won't update to IOS 5 on her iMac, my iPad 2 updated fine on my Dell PC- what gives?

My wife has a new (less than 6 months old) big beautiful iMac (of which I am extremely jealous-but that has no bearing on the conversation at hand) but every time she tries to update her iPad 2 to iOS 5 on iTunes she gets the error code 3259 at the very end of the 40+ minute download.  I own a Dell (over 1 1/2 years old) running windows 7 and I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 5 when it was first released with no problems.  I checked the message boards and they said that they were most likely experiencing an overload of people trying to download off the servers and that was causing the download issues.  So I waited and tried again....and again....and again....and, well you get the idea.
I can not fathom how my PC updated fine but my wife's iMac (running the latest update of Lion and yes she updated iTunes and did the firewall settings correctly) can't/won't update it to save her life.  Does anyone have any ideas????
    Thanks,

    Hello jaideniv,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
First I would recommend this article named Can't connect to the iTunes Store found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368. It will get you started with troubleshooting iTunes Store connection issues on the computer and the phone.
If needed there is a more advanced article named iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 that I would next recommend.

  • Intel iMac won't start up after update of OS... anyone w/similar prob?

Help! I recently did installs through "software update" and now my iMac won't go beyond the flat blue screen. To be more specific, it starts up, takes a long time on the grey screen with the rotating pinned circle and apple logo, then stays on the flat blue screen forever. I can move the mouse but nothing else happens.
I'm trying to remember what the software update installed... I think it was the most recent security update, iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto and Quicktime update.
I'd appreciate any advice or experiences you can offer. Thanks in advance.

Hi, hajime7. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
FYI: Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems.
    Good luck!
