IMac wont boot after update had an error.

My iMac freezes when trying to start up after an error occured when trying to do it's automatic apple software update. Stays on a white screen with time cirlce going round and another circle with a diagonal line thru it.  Said it would re-download updates when it had booted back up. but now it will not boot.  Is there anything I can do or is it serious?

Start your Mac with the original DVD that came with the computer and run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it. Also repair your permission then restart your iMac normally.

  • Imac wont boot after update. twice!

I tried to install an update the other night and it finished. I restarted my computer and it ran fine for about 20 minutes. It slowly started to run worse and worse. Finally i restarted and this time the gray apple screen came up with a loading bar. It loaded and then the loading wheel came up and never left. I restarted and it would go to the apple screen with the loading wheel and would not make it past. Today i took it to the apple store and they tried a few things that failed. We ended up re-imaging my computer. I get home tonight it runs fine i try to update and once again the computer crashes on me. Any help?

I would hate for you to have to make another trip to the Apple Store, but if they "reimaged" your iMac, which I assume to mean reinstalled Snow Leopard, then I would probably suggest taking it back to them and have them do whatever they did again and this time followup with doing the update themselves for you in the store. That way they can see the problem firsthand if it recurs or perhaps correct anything you may be doing wrong, not to suggest that it is your fault however.

  • Imac wont boot after this last update

I downloaded an update (automatically through software update). After it installed it told me to wait for computer to restart and then hold power button until the long tone, then it should be done. I did that with no problem.
Ever since then though it wont boot regularly. It wither sits at grey screen forever OR gives me the prohibit sign. The only way to get it to work it to hold that power button until the long tone again.
Any idea whats wrong and how i fix it??
Thanks in advance for any help.

The long tone is an indication that a firmware update is installing. Do you get a progress bar at the bottom of you screen after letting the power button go?
Have you reset the PRAM? (cmdalt+PR when you restart the machine)
Also repair permissions when the machine is up and running.

luckily i did have a time machine back up...
after installing this back up, everything was fine again..
until 2 weeks later, for some reason i had to reboot again.. and again, it was stuck.. only thing to get the imac working again.. reinstall from time machine back up
after this , it tried rebooting everyday, and the imac kept working..
after a few days, i forgot to reboot for a few days.. and what did you think.. the imac is stuk again.. so while reinstalling the time machine back up. • Macbook wont boot after updating ram

    Please help,
I have a white macbook mid 2010 model.  Today I attempted to upgrade the RAM in my machine but to no avail.  The ram I purchased was 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) - DDR3 SDRAM - 1333 MHz DDR3-1333/PC3-10666 - Non-ECC - Unbuffered - 204-pin SoDIMM PNY 4GB DDR3 SDRAM. I already tried to upgrade a few years ago so I had 3gb or RAM in my machine.  I wanted to buy a 4gb stick and use it along side the 2gb stick that I have in now.  When I put both sticks in my computer just beeps and wont boot.  It will however boot, if i put either stick in alongside one of the original sticks that my machine came with, which would either give me 5gb or 3gb.  I have seen people with similiar issues and the answers given was bad ram or bad memory slots.  If the memory or the slot was bad, it would work at all no matter what combination you used so that really dosen't make any sense to me.  If someone could help me, I would appreciate it.

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 1066mhz not 1333mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed. Your MacBook requires 1066mhz RAM not 1333mhz.
These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_Whi te - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-memory.asp - another good, cheap place to buying RAM if you live in the U.S.

  • IMac G5 Wont Boot After Update

I just ran a software update and all I get now is a blinking folder/finder icon. I also have a disk in the drive that I cannot eject. I only have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, so I have not been able to eject the disk in order to boot from the Mac OS DVD. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Welcome to Discussions - there is an extensive discussion, with fixes, for problems that occur after the updates HERE.
With respect to getting the disc out, try laying your iMac flat on it's face, on a soft towel, and pressing the eject button on the keyboard. Once you get the disk out, try and boot from your install disk.
Please let us know how you make out,

  • Wont boot after update last night *FIXED*

After I installed the latest update last night (3/23/13) my phone just sits at that red looking eye. There's animations like the lightning moving around, but wont actually boot. I've tried soft rebooting and the recovery boot, but still nothing. Looks like I'm going to have to take it back to the store and lose all my information. Absolutely ridiculous!
Well, for some reason I cant reply to threads, so Im updating the solution here.
Took the phone to the store and the Tech Specialist said the reason it was hanging up is because I have my phone encrypted when you shut it off. SO, basically if you have your phone pass worded, you have to factory reset your phone and lose all of your data. And, as an added bonus, you wont be able to access your microSD card either, since it is encrypted! The card thinks your connecting it to a different device, and even after entering your password you still cant access it. Wonderful! The only way for the card to recognize your factory reset phone is to reformat it. Brilliant! *** is wrong with the eggheads at Google??? I was the 5th person to goto the store with this issue, and the store had only been open 30 min. NOTE TO VERIZON! PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL OR OTHER MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR CUSTOMERS REGARDING THIS CLUSTER! This was a huge waste of time, AND data loss!!!!!

        Happy day DMONIC,
I know that it has been a few days since your device has been rebooting. budone gave an excellent recommendation. May I ask have you tried a factory reset yet? I know you may be concerned about your personal info. The great news is that your contacts and calendar entries are safely backed up on your Gmail account. I would suggest verifying that you info is preserved online beofre doing the reset. If you have already resolved this issue or need additional assistance then please advise, just in case more help is needed.
    Thank you...

  • IMac wont boot after change

Well I come from a linux background, so always have a lot of terminals open.  Was getting a lot of prefork errors, and after looking all over I found it seemed I was running out of files.  I googled around, saw a suggestion and made a change to a system file (not the /etc/sysctl.conf).  Somewhere 6 or so levels down.  It said you needed to reboot, so this am I did and now I am stuck at a white apple screen with the spinning gear.
I tried safe mode (which I read is just shift on boot).  I saw a the same boot sequence except a grey progress bar, but after the bar disapeared, I am in the same spot.
I'm looking for my original install disks, but while I look, is that the correct way for safe mode?
Also, I tried booting off a live linux CD but when I mounted the drive, the .bash_history was not updated since the terminal was closed and not <exited> I guess.
    Thanks

The correct way to restart in Safe Mode is when you hear the "Bong" sound hold down and continue to hold down the Shift key until a progress bar appears. Here are Apple's instructions on how to correctly restart in Safe Mode.
I would recommend that you also look over Gray screen appears during startup.

  • IMac wont boot after file transfer from Windows laptop

    Hi folks,
I am looking for some advice if anyone can help?
Sunday evening I transferred asome data off an old knackered Windows laptop via my home network. During the transfer, my 2013 iMac 27" started to really slow down and became unresponsive (i tried to cancel the data transfer and restart). In the end I have to force shut down by holding the power button in. Now, upon reboot of the machine, it won't get passed half way of the progress bar - and I've left it an hour at the most and given up.
I have attempted a verify and repair in Disk Utility, and even though I have managed to Verify Disk and Repair Disk, they took an absolute age to get through - I was chatting to an Apple Customer Care person, and they told me to chat back once it was done, which was probably 20-30mins after I started.
I then went on to Verify Disk Permission, which I left running for around 2 hours until it finished, and then moved onto Repair Disk Permissions, of which I cancelled after about 4 hours worth of it doing not a lot!
When I try and boot, it gets to a stage where the hdd is making a repetitive noise, as if it is stuck in a loop somehow.
I am running Yosemite 10.10.1, and have reset the PRAM to no avail.
I am fearing the worst tbh, but my main concern is the data on the drive - any tips on how to attempt to recover that data - or to fix the drive itself?
    Thanks
    Andy

  • IMac wont boot after displaying a black screen and then switching off

Help! My iMac screen suddenly went black, with a huge purple cursor and then a text box with hugely magnified text appeared momentarily and then disapeared, (the text block was just the standard "You are now connected to ...... " the name of our Network ) after some time and nothing happening I quit using the power off button, when I came back after a short while and powered up again now I cant get past the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinning disc? No start up tone either.

Yes, boot from the install disc and then use Disk Utility to repair the drive:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • Mac wont boot after update

I ran the latest combo update for OX X Lion.  After it restart the mac no longer boots.  What gives?  What kind of update hoses my machine?  Is there a fix?  How do I roll back the update?
This is very fustrating.  Please produce better software.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

go ahead and ddo a force quit - hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Then release it and press as normal to restart. you didnt mention seeing any installing screens so the file was downloaded but the installation didn't start so probably when you restart the installation will commence. If it doesn't, open the App Store program again and switch to the updates tab. You'll either see the restart button (which hopefully will work this time) or have to download it again.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" wont boot after update. (28.01.2014)

    Ok.
I got a notification that i have an update avalible, and i install it. It installs just fine and the Mac turns off.
When I boot, the apple logo shows, and a progress bare appears, and seems to complete the update.
But when the progressbar hits 100% it just turns of again. When i turn it on again, same thing happens.
Its only 1 week old, and nothing else has been bad with it.

You have 14 days from date of purchase to return the machine and exchange it for another. Unless you want to jump through some hoops to try to 'fix' what's wrong with your unit?
Try booting into your Recovery partition (hold down the command and R keys whilst booting) and use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive. I don't know that this will help - you may be stuck in some sort of infinite loop - but it's worth a try.
