IMac wont boot up, only white screen, advice needed.

Hi,
my 2008 iMac 24" got the spinning beach ball, it was spinning for 5 minutes or more, so I held down the power button and did a force quit, now when I turn on the machine I hear the chime , but I only get a blank white screen, Ive tried starting up with the Shift key pressed, also tried starting up with Command + V pressed and Option + Command + P + R keys pressed, but still the white screen, can somebody suggest something I can do to resolve this....thanks

Can you start the Mac from the Install DVD? If you can, go to Disk Utility in the Utilities Menu and check if the HDD shows in the left column. If it is not there it is damaged in some fashion. If the iMac is under warranty call Apple Care and arrange for warranty repair or replacement (Apple's choice.)

  • Mac wont boot, stuck on white screen

    Hi
After doing a software update and restart, my iMac wont boot. It will chime on, Grey screen w/ apple logo, then flashes to a white screen with a larger loading dial. It will keep doing this over and over, never actually getting to the login screen.
Have done safe mode start-up, tried repairing disks, and reinstalling OSX, which it won't let me do.
Not a computer expert so wondering if there are any more things I can try before taking it into get repaired?
    Thanks ahead of time!

Try booting from the install disc. A quick search should pull up the precise method for your particular iMac. If this started happening after and update, then it is likely something corrupted in your system software that may be an easy fix.  Do you have an external backup drive you could boot from?

  • 3gs wont start up/ only white screen.

Whats happened, is I had updated my 3gs from ios 6.0 to 6.0.1without any problems, as i have done many other times.
(upgrading from previous ios's from 3xx upto now etc) anyway about 30mins later i noticed it just turned off while it was still
connected to my cpu. so i started pushing the home button just to turn the screen on but nothing, same thing with the power button
the phone was charged so it wasn't flat..so after another 30 odd minutes of trying to turn it on. i started to do the hard/soft reset.
to put it in dfu mode/restore mode..itunes picked it up, it said your iphone is in recovery mode, and you need to restore iphone before
i can use it....blah blah......so it starts the process of restoring it, it gets to the part where it needs to verify the iphone with apple for restore,
the screen turns on but its just a white screen its white for about 20sec...then it turns yellow.. and now itunes is saying its, waiting for iphone....
and thats it. so i leave it connected for an hour or so, while its saying that it waiting for iphone..still nothing, still saying the same thing.
and this happens every single time... even after today with the release of ios 6.1 it does the same thing...no apple logo,no connect to itunes logo,
nothing just white screen... i no its happen to others all i want to know is can i get it back to normal....ive tried everything, I possiblie can, i need help/advice
anything....hopfully this whole thing makes sence's and there is help out there.....

Have you tried a Safe Boot and then try to empty the Trash? Restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once booted (hopefully) try emptying the trash and then restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of that works try booting with the restore disk that came with the Mac (I assume you are on Snow Leopard as your profile) and running Disk Utility to see if your HD needs some repairs:
Disk in optical drive, restart holding down C, on boot choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If any repairs are made click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass then restart from the Apple menu.

  • My imac wont  get past the white screen with logo and rotating wheel

i was trying to turn on my imac when suddenly ot took forever on the white screen
i tried taking off everything connected to it-no change
i tried a safe mode after a few minuted a heard the second chime then a blinkin
question mark folder showed up so i turned it off again and tried a nvram/pram reset but it still stuck on the white screen
is it time to visit the apple store or is there something else i should try?

A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Late 2007 2.4Ghz iMac wont boot - no chime or screen

I have a late 2007 2.4Ghz iMac 4GB RAM.  I removed the RAM to take to work, and while I was gone my son came home from School and attempted to boot the machine with no RAM in it.  He rang me up saying the iMac is beeping on startup.  I came home unplugged the iMac from the power and put the RAM back in.  I tried to boot and I can hear the fans spin up for a second and then nothing.  No chime, no screen.
I tried using other RAM and swapping them out - nothing.  I tried unplugging for 15 seconds etc, but I'm not getting anywhere.  Any ideas?

It took me a while but I found out the culprit was using 800Mhz DDR2 RAM rather than the stock 667Mhz.  800Mhz RAM I've used in other 667MHz machines and assumed it was backward compatible.  Seems an issue with this particular 2007 iMac?

  • My imac wont boot past the apple screen

I installed a Java update and now my system wont start

Was this from Software Update, or some direct download?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

    Hey there mtriest,
It sounds like you are unable to boot the iMac successfully as it keeps shutting down when you try to boot. I suggest the troubleshooting from the following article named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Perform a Safe BootSimply performing a Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
There is additional information in the article with further troubleshooting if needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • HT3964 My iMac turns on and a white screen appears with the mac apple and the wheel just sits and spins for a long period of time. Any ideas?

My iMac turns on. A white screen appears, then a apple appears, then the wheel starts to turn but my computer never boots all the way on?

  • IMac wont boot up

My IMac wont boot up! I installed the Mac OSX system disk and ran disk utility this is the results:
    invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
What do I do to get this up and running again, I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I called applecare and they were able to get my iMac up and running. Apparently there is an issue with updating software. I just had to do an update today and ended up with the same problem. So I re did what the applecare rep told me and I got it going again myself. I am hoping this will not continue. So anyway, I am going to provide the steps on how my I got iMac going.
    1. unplug the computer for approx 17 seconds.
    2. unplug everything from the computer except the mouse and keyboard.
    3. plug in the computer
    4. turn on the iMac and hold down the option key at the SAME TIME
    5. when the iMac comes on, it will make a loud beep noise, CONTINUE to hold the power and option key until a small the Mac HD icon displays.
    5. When the Mac HD icon shows on the screen, release the power button and option key. Then click on the arrow below the Mac HD icon.
    5. The iMac will boot and take you to the desktop. Then click applications
    6. choose the utility folder
    7 then choose disk utility
8 a screen will appear that states first aid. At the bottom, there will be an option to repair disk. Click on that then choose Mac HD.
9 When this is finished, you are good to go. These steps will repair what ever the software updates are doing to the hard drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • AIR for Android - see only white screen

I want deploy my AIR application on Android device (created by Flash Builder)  - but I see only white screen on Android-device.
In development environment - I install Flex 4.6 with upgrade it to AIR 3.7
In Android I install current AIR envirenment fom Google Play
I create this HelloWord minimal application:
    Android3.mxml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                           xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                           xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" width="369" height="90">

<content>[This value will be overwritten by Flash Builder in the output app.xml]</content>
            </initialWindow>
    </application>
This HelloWord application working perfectly on Windows and Linux environment
    Then I packet APK-packet:
    adt -package -target apk -storetype pkcs12 -keystore CERTIFICATE.p12 Android3.apk Android3-app.xml Android3.swf
    I show warning message:
Warning: Application has not specifiad its permission requirements in application.xml
NOTE:The AIR SDK no longer support packaging android application for use with the shared Runtime
The application has been packaged with a capture Runtime
But when I start my HelloWord-application on Android-device - I see only white screen.
    Whats wrong?

    Okay. I've found an answer:
yes, you can and have to add these icons via the descriptor file, since flash wont let you. But before you do that, go into the "Air publish" settings in flash. Here, right on page 1, there is the "include files" section. Add your icon pngs there. Hit OK and exit these settings. Now open the descriptor with an editor outside of flash and write in the files like I posted above. Close. Save. Make it write protected. No go to flash and publish.

  • My imac wont boot  and a small square shows up next to the cursor

    Hi
my imac wont boot and a small square shows up next to the cursor. I can open in safe mode. I have reinstalled the OSX, but can't boot from back-up.
    Any advice?

OK.....I figured it out.....after reading endless threads on the cursor issue, I found out that apple calls the cursor a MOUSE POINTER..! and the square that follows it a 'corruption'...GO FIGURE!
Anyway, this is what I did.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion....online install. It didn't resolve the issue. Same problems
Then, I tried reinstalling from the original DVD install disc....this wasn't possible (no access sign over install icon).
So I finally erased my hard drive (after rebooting command - r), BUT NOT BEFORE BACKING UP MY FILES, APPLICATIONS, SETTINGS and any other important data!!!!!!!
    Then started up command R
    Then reinstalled Mountain Lion online
My iMac started up like it does when you install 'out of the box'...follow the instructions....
my cursor, or mouse pointer is now free of it's 'corruption', and boots up just fine!
Hope this helps anyone out there with the same issue

  • I installed snowleopard now my imac wont boot up

Since i installed snowleopard my imac wont boot up it always get stuck at the screen with the apple logo

Sounds like a borked install. Pop in the SL install disc, restart, holding down the C key, and reinstall.

  • Won't boot stuck on white screen

I got an apple question for u before I schedule an appointment at the genius bar...my mid 2007 24"  2.8GHz intel core 2 duo 4 GB 1067 DDR3 iMac running 10.7.2 will not boot passed the white screen. It just keeps on spinning. I had to do a full erase and install and restored from Time Capsule backup. I can boot while holding the option key and it will allow me to boot to the Recovery HD which I ran disk utility and repaired permissions and verified disk, everything came back repaired and "Ok", I reset pram...All that is good but when I try to restart to the Macintosh HD it just spins on the white screen...any suggestions before I bring it in?
    thanx

If you can get it to boot once the first thing you should do is backup all your data using Time Machine or better yet create a Bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. What Apple says to do to trouble shoot is in Gray screen appears during startup.
I would also recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, if no errors appear the first time run the test 2-3 more times. Each Extended Mode test will take 30-60 minutes.
