IMac wont go to sleep

I have an iMac OS-x 10.6.7 and for some reason it has suddenly refused to go to sleep. If I select the Apple (top left) and select sleep, nothing happens. I checked the Sys Pref - Energy Saving and that is set as 7 minutes and all options are ticked (bar the last one dealing with auto-startup after power cut). Weird. It does go into screen saver mode okay after 15 minutes but that stays lit up and does not go to sleep with a blank screen. This was all working okay a couple of days ago.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Forced a restart and was okay after that

  • Imac wont start from sleep

My imac has recently decided not to restart from sleep - I am having to switch off power and restart. Normally it will restart when I left click the mouse, however, there is no light showing on the underside of the mouse - profiler states 91% and the keyboard 100%
When running there appear to be no issues.
    Any thoughts please?
    3.06Ghz running 10.6.8
8Gig Ram - showing in profiler.

  • IMac wont' wake from sleep (wired keyboard)

I see a couple threads on this here, but they seem to be associated with bluetooth keyboards.
I have a new 27" iMac Core i5 (about 2 months old) and a new problem started this past week. When the computer display goes to sleep, I cannot wake it up. The only way I have found to wake it up is by tapping the power button to force a full hard drive sleep and then clicking the mouse. This is also time consuming (it takes a minute to wake up).
Yes, I have the setting for the hard drive to go to sleep on. But I can hear the computer working when I am trying to wake it up. I can play music by hitting the space bar on my keyboard - but the display will not awaken.
Any help would be greatly appreciate.

    Hi Michael
    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
    +2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
and then test to see if it is working as expected?
If not, then check and try the following:
    1. A tap on the keyboard should wake the display, is the keyboard plugged into a port on the back of the iMac or into a Hub?
    2. Your profile shows that you are running 10.6.2? Either way if the computer is or is not up to date download and install the 10.6.6 Combo Update. > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
    3. Then run a Software Update.. to make sure that iTunes, Safari, Java and your Printer are up to date.

  • Imac wont connect when wake from sleep ?!

Even after all the recent updates, my Imac still wont connect from sleep!!!

How do you know "engineering is working on it"?

  • IMac wont sleep after 10.6.3 update

I just bought a new 27" iMac i7 on saturday, I barely had time to do anything to the machine before I updated on monday to 10.6.3. The iMac was going to sleep just fine before the update, now when I put the iMac to sleep, it will go to sleep, but after a few minutes it wakes itself up. I've looked at my sys.log, but it doesnt give me any reason for it's wake up.
Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know of a solution?
The whole point of replacing my MacPro with this iMac was to save a bit on electricity costs. But now that point is moot because I cant put it to sleep! Please help!

    HI,
    First, try Resetting the PRAM
Restart your iMac. If the problem persists, try Resetting the SMC
Sorry you are experiencing problems with a brand new iMac! If you did not repair disk permissions, do that. Repair permissions after every software update.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • IMac wont wake up

    Hi,
my new 27" i7 iMac wont wake up from sleepmode after a longer period of time.
The interesting thing is, when I put him to sleep via the apple menu, I can wake him with either mouse or keyboard. If I leave him on when I go to bed, somewhere during the night, the fans start to spin. When I try to wake him in this state,
nothing happens. When I push the powerbutton, I can hear the fans slowing down, but they dont turn off. I have to hold the powerbutton for 10 secs to shut the iMac down.
I allready tried to reset pram, nvram and smc, but nothing helps.
    Any ideas?

You need to contact Apple. Try AppleCare
Even if you didn't purchase AppleCare they may be able to make suggestions.

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

Power down (assume you have already tried the SMC reset) and insert the Applications DVD that came with your new iMac. Boot up while holding the "D" key down (may be best with a wired keyboard) to run the Apple Hardware Test according to these instructions:

  • IMac wont boot up

My IMac wont boot up! I installed the Mac OSX system disk and ran disk utility this is the results:
    invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
What do I do to get this up and running again, I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I called applecare and they were able to get my iMac up and running. Apparently there is an issue with updating software. I just had to do an update today and ended up with the same problem. So I re did what the applecare rep told me and I got it going again myself. I am hoping this will not continue. So anyway, I am going to provide the steps on how my I got iMac going.
    1. unplug the computer for approx 17 seconds.
    2. unplug everything from the computer except the mouse and keyboard.
    3. plug in the computer
    4. turn on the iMac and hold down the option key at the SAME TIME
    5. when the iMac comes on, it will make a loud beep noise, CONTINUE to hold the power and option key until a small the Mac HD icon displays.
    5. When the Mac HD icon shows on the screen, release the power button and option key. Then click on the arrow below the Mac HD icon.
    5. The iMac will boot and take you to the desktop. Then click applications
    6. choose the utility folder
    7 then choose disk utility
8 a screen will appear that states first aid. At the bottom, there will be an option to repair disk. Click on that then choose Mac HD.
9 When this is finished, you are good to go. These steps will repair what ever the software updates are doing to the hard drive.
    Hope this helps.

    Machine just stopped, froze up.

Hei, just to let you know. I gave up and delivered my machine to mac repair. It turned out that a module error was the cause of my problems. They have since replaced the defective part and my machine works like a dream. No reinstalling either, all existing files and software are intact.

after the install upgrade my imac wont load anymore i tried to do a safe mode load and wehn i do at the end of it it tells me that i have a "systemShutdown false" what does this mean

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • 2006 imac wont boot ! g5 cord ok to try?

My late 2006 imac wont power up after a power outage.  I did have it plugged into a surge protector tho that is over a decade old by now, didnt think of that earlier.   I just get a black screen, no change when i press the power button after it being unplugged.
I Wanted to try the hardware test but the cd drive wont pull the cd in like it normally does when i place it in there.
I have tried an smc reset, no change.
I have an old g5 that no longer works.  Im thinking of trying to use the power cord from that to see if its the cord that is the problem.  would that be ok to try?

You should be fine trying the G5 power cord.

Try resetting the SMC, it may take 2-3 attempts. Please post back with the results. If you're not sure how please follow the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets
