IMac wont power up now!

Hello,
I just back from the apple store with snow leopard excited to install it on my iMac about 2 hours ago to find my iMac frozen and it wouldnt let me hit the shut down button. So i just hit the power button on the mac and now it wont turn on. I tried to reinstall the OS but when i go to install it, it doesnt even show a hard drive to install it on.
I still have apple care for it, so does anyone have any suggestions? And, if it is a failed HD will the apple care replace that or would i be better off just buying a new iMac? My iMac is almost 2 years old, i bought it refurbished from apple.com
Thanks for any help in advance.

If you have AppleCare, use what you paid extra for...

If it's covered, it will not cost you anything to get it repaired. So even if you decide to get a new iMac, you should get this one fixed.
You can try resetting PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, resetting SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is unplugging the iMac from power and reconnecting it following a precise procedure. When you reconnect it, try connecting it by itself to a wall outlet directly, instead of to a power strip with other devices. Disconnect all of your peripheral devices, except for your standard USB mouse and keyboard.
If that does not get the hard drive to be recognized and working properly, use that AppleCare.

  • IMac wont Power Up

    My iMac has an issue, if all users are logged off after a designated amount of time my iMac powers off but the only way I can restart it is to unplug the power cord from the unit wait a few seconds then reinsert the power cord, only then will it power up.

  • My imac wont power up

    My iMac froze, so i held the power button on the back to restart it, now it wont restart properly. It makes the chime sound and the fans are working, the apple logo appears and also a loading bar on the bottom of the screen, which i am pretty sure it doesn't normally do that. After around 30 seconds it just powers itself off again before the login screen can appear. How can i fix this?

    Carefully read and then methodically follow each of the steps in Gray screen appears during startup

  • My iMac wont power on either

    I have a G3 iMac 400mhz DV that has run with no problem ever. Had a power outage today and now will not power up at all. No lights no static no anything. Pulled battery, put in new battery. Pushed "cuda" button, still nada. Any ideas where to go from here? Is this common?

    Try things in Texas Mac Mans tutorial, including what to try if all else fails at the end.
    I'll post it here in case you miss it;
    -I found this on a Mac site. Sometimes computers lose their mind. Don't ask me why or how it happens but it does. Sometimes you simply have to totally discharge the computer. One thing I have learned about the Blue and white and the Gray G4 Macs is that sometimes pushing the PMU is not enough. If your machine is dead, then try the following.
    * Unplug the unit.
    * Remove the battery
    * Push the PMU switch (count to 5 slow)
    * Push the start button on the front of the Mac (count to 5 slow)
    * Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes
    * Replace the battery
    * Plug it back in, and push the start button
    If it doesn't work I usually repeat the steps above, pull the RAM, and let it sit longer. If it doesn't work after this, it is take it to the shop time.
    Cheers!

  • IMac and power failure, now new startup screen and abrupt shutoff

    Had a power failure, iMac kept turning on and off, finally unplugged and after 8 hours, I try to start and I get a screen that has the apple logo and spinning load animation, but also a new bar that shows something is being worked on. It reaches the end and abruptly shuts off.

    What version of OS X was your Mac running?

  • New twist:iMac wont power on

    Ok, I've read the other posts regarding this but my symptoms seem a bit different. For about two weeks my iMac has been turning itself off after sitting idle for abou 15 minutes (it's normally on 24/7, although I let it sleep alot). As of this evening, i won't turn on. I press the power button and it goes orange for about 5 seconds (which is norma) then, when it flips to green (this is when it powers up the CRT) it dies.
    Help! I need my emal and contact lists!

    Robby,
    By your description of the problem, it sounds like a classic analog board failure. You must have a tray loading imac judging by how the orange power light turns green then the computer turns off. The problem with the computer turning off after 15 minutes was just the beginning of your problem leading to the end result of not being able to turn on the machine.
    I hope this helps in fixing your problem and makes your decision easier to purchase a new mac or purchase a replacement part.

  • 2006 imac wont boot ! g5 cord ok to try?

    My late 2006 imac wont power up after a power outage.  I did have it plugged into a surge protector tho that is over a decade old by now, didnt think of that earlier.   I just get a black screen, no change when i press the power button after it being unplugged.
    I Wanted to try the hardware test but the cd drive wont pull the cd in like it normally does when i place it in there.
    I have tried an smc reset, no change.
    I have an old g5 that no longer works.  Im thinking of trying to use the power cord from that to see if its the cord that is the problem.  would that be ok to try?

    You should be fine trying the G5 power cord.

  • Syncing iphone and now phone is stuck and wont power off or do anything

    syncing iphone and now phone is stuck and wont power off or do anything

    Reboot the phone:  hold down the power button and the home button at the same time until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "slide to shut down".  When the screen has been completely black for a few minutes, press the power button again.

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again

    If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
    It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
    Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired.  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.

    I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive)  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • ITunes crashed now Mac mini wont power back on

    iTunes crashed now Mac mini wont power back on

    You have not provided any information on which to base troubleshooting. Minimal information would include the Model Mac mini you have for example Mid 2010 Mac mini, exactly what happened when iTunes crashed, and what -- if anything -- happens when you try to restart. It is unlikely iTunes has anything to do with the failure to reboot but instead iTunes crashed because of what even caused your Man mini to fail.
    Just as a starting point, be sure and check all your connections, power, monitor, keyboard, mouse, everything. You would not be the first to have a plug come adrift unexpectedly.

  • There was a power outage while I was asleep and my Imac was on. Now it is comatose, no sign of life no matter what I do. Help anyone?

    There was a power outage while I was asleep and my Imac was on. Now it is comatose, no sign of life no matter what I do. I pressed the power on button for over a minute and nothing happened. I unplugged the cable and changed the wall socket too but nothing happens. I hope My hard disc is not damaged and the data is not lost. How do I determine this with no technical knowledge?

    Hi Brennahunt,
    Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    If your iPhone is not recognized by iTunes for Windows, try these troubleshooting steps first:
    iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
    If the steps in the article above do not solve the issue, completely remove and reinstall iTunes using the method in this article:
    Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    This process should not affect any music or content on your computer, but you may want to
    back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
    When reinstalling iTunes (step 3 in the article above), be sure that you are logged in to your computer as an Administrator:
    Make sure you have an administrator account.
    To install iTunes or QuickTime, you need to log in as an administrator on the computer. • Why is that whenever there's a power outage or whenever I restart my computer sometimes my iMac wont completely load up? It will just  show a blank white screen. It will do that for a few days until it decides to fully load up.

    Why is that whenever there's a power outage or whenever I restart my computer sometimes my iMac wont completely load up? It will just  show a blank white screen. It will do that for a few days until it decides to fully load up.

    First step would be a PRAM reset.

    Post back if that does not work.
    The next step would be to try "Repair Disk".
