Imac wont recognize my camcorder

I just purchased a cable for my iMac to connect to my tape camcorder.  When I plug it in it doesn't recognize the camcorder but goes to iSight when I select import from Camera.

It would be quite useful to know what camera it is!

    Hello?
I own an Imac with Leopard 10.5 (NOT Snow Leopard)...
Yesterday - I re-installed the 2 disks to try to clean up a bit the system...
(I've own the computer for 3 or 4 years, and I think it kinda needed it...)
It installed (took 2 hours) and all seemed well until - I went to log in...
I put in my pw (same pw since I bought the Imac) and it wont recognize it???
It wont recognize the master pw either...
What can I do - I live very far (200km) from an Apple store...
I will give all the points and stars to anyone who can help!!
I have a huge assignment to start this week...
    Chilly

If you think it is "root" then the fllowing tells you how to enable/disable root user using your admin password:
Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
And you can also change the root password from terminal using:
    sudo passwd root
Answer the prompt for your admin passoword (it won't be echoed) and then the other prompts.

  • Imac wont recognize printers

ever since i installed lion my mac wont recognize my epson printer or my hp printer. no printing from ipad either.

You probably won't get any help unless you are more descriptive. At a bare minimum we need to know what version of Lion is installed on the iMac (10.7.2 is current), exactly what  printers you have and exactly how they are connected to your computer. Also please check http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 to see if your model printers are supported. The first thing I'd do though is System Preference - Print & Scan - highlight the first  printer in the box on the left and right click it and choose Reset Printing System. It will look similar to:

  • Migration Assistant adn iMac wont recognize Target Disk Mode of iBook

Friend purchased a new iMac 20in and went to use Migration Assistnat to transfer from older iBook. Will call this iBook1
Following directions, he hooked up Firewire cable, rebooted iBook1 into Targe Disk Mode (TDM). New iMac would NOT recognize existance of TDM iBook1. So we began the following sequence of tests to isolate the problem.
    1) Using a second iBook2, hooked up original iBook1 in TDM to iBook2. The HD of iBook1 showed up on the desktop of iBook2 as it should, along with all the files inside of it. This verified that the cable was good and that the firewire port on the iBook1 was working as well as TDM on iBook1.
    2) We rebooted the iMac, restarted the Migration assitant and placed the iBook2 into TDM and connected them. Migration assistant worked, recognizing the iBook2 as it should. This verified that the iMAc firewire port and Migration assistant was again working fine. We also rebooted the iMac and hooked up the iBook2 in TDM w/o Migration assistant, and again it worked fine.
    3) We then tried to connect the iBook1 via TDM to the iMac w/o migration assistant. Again NO RESULT.
No matter what we did, we could NOT get the new iMac to recognize the older iBook1 via firewire TDM. All other connections betwen the computers worked fine. All systems were running 10.4.10. We reset the PRAM, we fixed permisions, still the new iMac would not recognize the iBook1 in TDM.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem connecting my iBook G3 500 in Target Disk Mode to my new iMac, the icon does not show up on the iMac. I have tested the Firewire on both computers with a FW XHD and they work fine. I took the iBook in to work and connected it to an eMac and a ProBook Intel with no problems. Back home tonight and it still fails to show the icon of the iBook in TDM on the desktop of the new iMac. Suggestions on a fix ? Thank you.

  • My imac wont recognize my input in the system preferences

so, im on an older imac (the one with the big round base, a chrome arm holding up a flat screen) and im trying to hook my guitar into the line-in jack next to the headphone jack. i go to "system preferences" and click the "sound" tab, then click the "input" tab. it only gives me the option for the built-in mircophone, i dosent even recognize that i have a line in plugged in. the wire is in perfect condition, so there is no chance that the wire is faulty. i have tryed it with the 1/4 end of the cable plugged into my guitar, and with out, and ive tryed starting my computer with it already plugged in, and i tryed it while the computer was already running. ive recording many songs on my X-girlfrinds MacBook Pro with no isses...same guitar. same wire, and it worked great.
how can i get the "system preferences to recognize that my guitar is plugged in?!?!?
    thank you!!!!
PS this computer was a hand-me-down from my dad, i have no clue what version of garageband i have (not that i think that would matter in this situation) and i do not know what was the last operating system update that this computer recieved

I believe that icloud requires OS 10.7, your post indicates that you have 10.6.8.

  • Imac wont recognize video camera through fire wire

Hey, iv got gotten a new iMac with Lion on it and my video tape camera (Canon ZR960) isnt recognized by my imac, i plug it in through firewire 800 and nothing happes? This is the only camera i have the caputres from tape and i have recently recorded a project and need it captured to Final Cut Pro X but either way no matter what i do i cannot get the computer to see it.

I don't have FCP X, but from what I know from FCE sand iMovie, those programs all have specific instructions on how to import footage. This is from your user manual (available from the Help menu or online where I found it):
It covers all sorts of options including tape based devices.

  • 2007 imac wont recognize new ram

installed 2gb centon ddr2-667 memory in empty slot, supposed to be mac ready but computer does not change still says slot is empty? any suggestions?

Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
If you purchased RAM from any local computer or any electronics retailer, you bought incompatible and wrong RAM!
Return the RAM and get a full refund.
There are NO local electronics retailers that carry the proper Mac RAM.
Reliable and correct Mac RAM can only be purchased online.
FYI, your iMac can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM.
Can only be purchased from OWC ( macsales.com).

  • Imac wont recognize current location

Just moved to Europe from California (cupertino) and my imac (core i7 latest model) will show as being in Cupertino when I select "Set time zone automatically using current location" in System Preferences. Tried most obvious fixes, to no avail. Any idea ?

Set both Date &Time  and the Timezone in Preferences.
You might have to set manually until server cache refresh.

  • USB wont recognize external drive

I see that there have been a lot of problems with the usb ports recognizing external hard drives.  Some of the fixes are so confusing, I cant even follow them!  Does anyone have an easy fix for this problem or do you think apple care will know?  i have used this drive for about a6 months with no problem, and then all of a sudden my Imac wont recognize the drive.

    HI
You should check in System Profiler, under the USB section to see if the drive appears there (Apple -> About This Mac -> More Info -> USB)
Also, try resetting the SMC & PRAM to see if that helps

now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • My iMac 400 DV wont recognize a DVD

I recently got a iMac 400 DV (slot-loading). It has a DVD/CD combo. For some reason the mac recognizes a CD but wont recognize a DVD. I am using Panther 10.3.9. Any suggestions? Everytime I insert a DVD (original movie) it spins for a while (20 seconds) than spits it out.

    The 1990/2000 iMac DV 400MHz came with a DVD-ROM drive (not a 'Combo' drive - a 'Combo' drive is DVD-ROM and CD-RW). The 2001 iMac 400MHz came with a CD-ROM drive only.
I suggest you obtain a cleaning disc and try cleaning the drive.

  • My imac no longer recognizes my camcorder

I used to plug my camcorder in via DV cord to firewire 800 and my computer would import the videos.  It's a SONY mini-dv DCR-TRV33.  Now when I attach it to my computers (I have four - one w snow leopard, 1 - mountain lion, 1 - Maverick) none of the computers recognize the camcorder.  The screen on the camcorder flashes DV IN.  Please help!  Used to work!

Sounds like there is a malfunction on the SONY, as it will not work with any of your Macs!
Try removing all power sources from the SONY for about 10 minutes and then power it up again.
Check SONY's website for support and possible upgrades.

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. • How can I get imovie 11 to recognize my camcorder?

I have some mini DV tapes I'm trying to digitize. I bought an old camcorder that will play them, a JVC GR DVL 120. I bought a firewire cable to connect the camcorder to my iMac. (10.7.5) But when I plug it in, iMovie 11 will not recognize the camcorder. I've unplugged every cable and plugged it back in, restarted camera, rebooted computer, tried the whole setup on my laptop, and then an older iMac with iMovie 09 installed. No luck.
I have found many, many questions online from people with similar problems, but zero answers. Apple's support page on this is minimal and useless.
Does anyone know of a way to get this footage into my computer? Am I missing something obvious?
Is there another application I could use?

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.
