IMac wont start, no startup chime. If I take out ram, continuous beeps.. can I rule out anything?

iMac 2009 3.06 Ghz with 4850 HD video. A1225 - MB420LL/A (I think is the model)
No problem with this thing in years until the day Mavericks is installed. That can't be a coincidence.
Moving on.
I was told there was some screen flashing zapping kind of and then the computer turned off. If I try to turn it on there is no startup chime, but I can barely hear the fans whirring and the drive spinning.
All I could think was to try resetting PRAM and SMC and whatever could be reset without taking the computer apart. No changes. I took out the ram and the computer constantly beeps, I assume to indicate there's no RAM.
My question is does the fact that it's beeping when the RAM is out indicate any particular part is still working?
I was very briefly able to get it to start in Target Disk mode, but the drives but I was only able to see the root directory listing of the drive then it became inaccessible and I have been unable to get target disk mode to start again.
I have to basically consider fixing this myself because there are no repair centers within hundreds of miles. Thanks for any thoughts.

Do you have a bootable external disk. A Time Machine backup disk made when you have either Lion ot Mt Lion installed is bootable to a version of the recovery HD files. If you have such a external drive see if you can boot from it. At startup hold down the Option key for a one time Boot Selection screen.

My apologies for the inept instructions.
Restart normally. Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the commands in the Terminal application to avoid typos:
    sudo su
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted.  It will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again. Now paste each of the following at the prompt and press RETURN after each.
    chown root:admin /Applications
    chmod 0775 /Applications
    chown root:admin /Library
    chmod 1775 /Library
    chown root:admin /System
    chmod 0775 /System
    chown root:admin /Users
    chmod 0775 /Users
    chmod -R -N /Applications
    chown -R :admin /Applications/*
    Again, my apologies.

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

Hello there, DJ ROb E Rob.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting the gray screen at startup:

  • Crisis: iMac wont start up.....logs attached! Help!

My iMac had been constantly freezing while starting up since last week.....after the chime it goes to the grey screen and then a grey screen with distorted lines and dots and the bottom part turns dark grey, sometimes blue.
Its a late 2009 27' 2.6 Quad i7, but it would boot fine in safe mode. Issue is that the DVD Rom doesn't work and airport/usb/fw would not appear in safe mode either.
So i decided to install a new hard drive with a fresh installation of 10.6.8 and then copy my data from the old drive and install all software from scratch.
Had a tech install the drive, he installed the OS through firewire from my MBP.
The iMac powered on just fine, i registered the name etc and then just to see that the freeze issue was gone, i restarted a few times. On the 5th restart i got the grey screen with the distorted graphics again. Tech decided to take out ram and install new ram. Same result. Then after he re-installed my old RAM, the system wouldnt start up at all and i would get the beep after 5 seconds. Just now i tried installing the Ram in different sockets and it powered on but again froze on the distorted screen. I safe booted and copied ALL MESSAGES and SYSTEM.LOG from console.
i cant read this stuff and the apple techs in my country are totally useless.
I would so appreciate if someone can tell me what errors, issues are causing this behavior.......
i shall attach the log files in a reply message below so it is easier to read.
This happned at the worst possible time. I had been contemplating selling this machine and buying a used mac pro. now i cant sell this before i fix it and i have lost the mac pro deal. I can afford a new mac but because they wont run Snow Leopard i dont feel confortable at all. I really need to squeeze a few months out of this machine. Would highly appreciate some help!

    Hello,
My neighbor's computer is experiencing some problems: it does not start (the screen stays black, no startup chime, but the fans run, as does the hard disk. Also, neither the mouse or the keyboard seem to be powered (no light), so the computer doesn't even come to loading the EFI). The model is an iSight iMac G5 20'' (EMC=2082).
I have tried usual commands (reset PRAM and reset the SMC). Also tried with no device connected. (well, if something so trivial than all these tips did the trick, I wouldn't had to ask here ).
So, without keyboard, I couldn't even try special modes (safe, target disk, start from CD, etc), should the Mac be able to start in some mode. I have then decided to open the iMac (well, the warranty is way out, so nothing is lost). I have never seen a so-hard-to-open Mac, by the way (something was likely blocked).
I'm thinking of 4 possible causes for the problem:
    -the hard disk could be damaged. It was malfunctioning some days ago. I assume it could come to a point where the logical board of the disk is failing;
    -the RAM is an obvious possible cause;
    -the CPU is also obvious;
-another component on the main board/logic board.
    -I have forgotten a 5th point?
Well, I tried with unplugging the hard disk, and it had no effect, so it's not the HDD. I'm puzzled for the remaining ones (not knowing the iMac enough is a cause).
First, about the RAM, it seems the RAM slot is empty, so the actual RAM is somehow built-in (I haven't seen something seeming like usual RAM bars), so, if I can't remove the RAM, how can I test whether it's damaged or not?
Then, the CPU. There are 2 of them. So I thought I may take one out (and then the other one) and see whether the Mac starts. Well, I can't figure out how to remove the CPU cooling piece (there are just 4 "buttons" that can be pressed but nothing happen). I prefer asking here first, not removing the entire main board without advices.
Lastly, if it's the main board, I know I won't be able to do much. I have read there are LEDs to possibly diagnose power issues, but I don't see them (no LED is showing light, it seems). I'd like to test my other assumptions before thinking the main board is the cause.
Else, is there something I could try I have forgotten?
P.S: sorry for my (possibly) bad english, and the troubles of explanation; it's not as easy when english isn't the native language. I just wanted to mention that I have already repaired computers, so don't hesitate to tell me complicated answers.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
    Anic,
You can't remove the CPU nor remove/replace the RAM… Really a bad model!
Yes you have to think of it more like a laptop. The only models w/ removable CPUs were the Towers.
Which explains why I thought CPU were usually removable (I have mostly used towers except the original iMac, before).
Thanks. I indeed never touch a board when the computer is plugged.
Hee hee I did since I was used to working on the ALS model where the power supply is enclosed.
Even on an enclosed power supply, I'd not want to touch some kind of board. Well, perhaps it's just me.
Actually, it's the info about which info I need that I'm looking for
After having tried what I could, the remaining bits seem locked (unlike other models).
Not sure what you mean here?
Well, after re-reading myself, I agree I don't really understand either
I meant that I have already tried as much as I could, but the remaining bits (so to mention, the RAM and CPU, mainly) can't be tested. So, I'm looking for testing other parts of the iMac (perhaps there's other things that can be tested, like flashing the EFI).
I'd like to hear from you that the built-in RAM can't be tested, please (to clear my assumption).
the external screen adaptor..(if it wasn't optional, then she does not know where it is).
Well it looks like this. It's pretty standard. Every iBook had one for instance.
    http://www.synaptech.com/catalog/images/922-4554.gif
In fact, all the laptops I have seen have that kind of adaptor (although they may slightly vary from models to models), but I thought it was only for laptops (which, as they are easy to move, may have different available screens). Now, does it also apply to iMacs?
I have a question regarding this: I guess the LED3 is concerning the whole graphic card, not just the built-in output, right (in other words, not just about the "main" display)? So I doubt an external screen would make any difference since the LED3 is off (tell me if I'm wrong).
Well what the manual says is:
"LED 3: Indicates that the main logic board has established communication with the LCD display."
So if that's not light then the graphics chip is not communicating with LCD panel.
Fine, but can the graphics chip still communicate with the external port, even if the LED3 is off?
    (sorry for having been unclear)
So you did a SMU reset like this:
"Resetting the SMU (System Management Unit)
    1. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    Wait 10 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    3. Let go of the power button.
    4. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac G5 (17-inch iSight).
Hmm… Not sure about step 2. The "simultaneously" part may not be what I did (I actually tried two things:
1: plugged back the power cord, then (after that) pressed the power button
2: while still unplugged, I pressed the power button (held down for about 5 seconds), then released it and plugged the power cord back.
Do you think I should press the power button while the iMac is still unplugged and keep the button pressed while I plug the iMac (then release the button after I have plugged it)?
If that doesn't help you really need that Mini VGA to VGA adapter so you can plug in a standard VGA monitor and check out the output of the graphics chip (GPU).
I'm glad you mentioned every iBook has one, since my sister has an iBook
    I'll ask her.
Since it's not communicating with the LCD it could be a cable problem.
I'm doubting of that, because I'm sure the Mac does not boot at all (not just a blank screen, but also no power on USB ports).
Also you should read through this site:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
Which concerns the "capacitor plague". I'm sure you're aware of this. We had 30 Dell P-IVs that had this problem and those logic boards had a ton of lytics on them.
    Hmm… What a charming surprise
Well, I'm indeed aware of this (it hasn't happened to me yet, fortunately).
    Thanks for the link.
As to the rest of your questions, answer this set first.
    Fine, I follow the guide
    Thank you.

  • Ipodtouch wont start- Buffering startup

My Ipod touch 4G wont start. Had it for a week now. Not exactly ''not start''.
I turned it on and its got that buffering circle in middle of black screen for over Ihour. Please help me. The ipod means the world to me

Ok good to know that apps not starting is a known problem with the win10 beta
No it doesnt require admin privileges but i tried your suggestion anyway and thought i may have been in with a chance with swapping it from startup to login with a 30sec delay and it worked!
Although i did install the new beta at the same time so i cant be 100% positive that it didnt change something despite it not working till i reverted the .exe
Oh do i feel stupid for not checking for a update first thanks for going to the trouble but it seems that the update needs some work as now it doesnt seem to start properly and just opens a process that uses 100% of one cpu core so i swapped the .exe back to
the previous beta file and its all good again
    Thanks everyone!

  • IMac wont start

wheneve I start up the iMac G3, it just shows a gray screen. After awhile it shows a folder with the 2-faces-in-one logo on it in the center of the screen. it doesn't let me click on it or anything, and I dont know what its for. Also, if i start it up and hold down option, it shows 2 arrows- one pointing to the right and one going in a circle, and then the cursor is just a clock that spins and it doesn't stop. I tried starting from the OS 9 install disc but that didn't do anything, and I tried pressing command-option-p-r (which rebooted it), but that didn't seem to do anything. I can't get to anything. Can anybody help?

    Hi Poo
The Picasso face - which I'm also assuming alternates with a question mark - indicates that the mac cannot find a valid system folder to start up from.
If you hold down the Option key on start-up you are telling the mac to look for any valid system folders and then to offer you the choice of which to use.
As it can't find one during the normal sequence, it's not likely to find one using that method either.
You will have to give it one.
In this situation (which is not that uncommon) the normal way is to stick a system CD in the drive and then to hold down the C key as soon as the Bong happens and keep holding it down until you get a smiley face.
Once the system is started you have to decide what to do next. Often it's just a case of repairing directories and then things are back to normal. Sometimes (but not very often) you may find that reinstalling the sytsem is required (don't go erasing the drive to do it though).
If you do get it started from the CD (which should be cery straightforward), have a look at the system folder (OS9 I'm assuming) and look to see if it has the Picasso face on it - or is it just a plain folder?
If it's the plain folder do this.
Open the system folder and locate a file called System. (It WILL have the Picasso face). Take the file out of the system folder and put it on the desktop.
Now close the system folder. In one quick motion, take the Picasso face from the desktop and drop it onto the CLOSED system folder. Do it quickly so that the system folder doesn't open as you mouse over it.
After a moment, the blank system folder icon will change to that of a folder with a Picasso face embedded in it.
Now close the HD and restart the Mac.
Post back and tell us what happens.

  • My imac wont start up the wheel just spins

my screen went high contrast. i could not force quit so i powered off.  when i powered on the wheel just spins. this has been going on for an hour.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

    Hi Ke91,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your Mac is starting up to a folder with a questions mark. In this situation I would recommend reading over and working through the recommended troubleshooting steps that are outlined in the attached article.

  • Imac wont start up after new RAM, no chime, black screen

Hi, I've recently purchased a used 2010 iMac i3 that had faulty RAM.
This was confirmed as the issue when I tested a friend's original RAM from the same age iMac and the machine worked perfectly.
I then ordered 2x 4gb Crucial memory (upgrade from the 2x 2gb already installed) but kept getting kernal errors and RAM integrity check errors so the modules were returned and replaced by crucial.
Prior to returning, I attempted to reinstall a fresh copy of mavericks, but the hard drive failed to completely format, and then the OS install also failed so the machine currently now has no operating system. However before returning the ram the machine would boot up and connect to the internet to attempt to download the OS again.
The replacements have now arrived, but after installing the machine won't even boot. First attempt to start there is a drive noise, and the fans run, but no chime and a black screen. If I force shutdown and try again the drive noise happens twice and the fans run, but the same outcome.
If I remove the RAM I still get the single bleep, and once of all of the times I've removed and reseated the RAM I've had a triple beep integrity check fail.
Any help would be massively appreciated. Lost now as to whether the issue is with crucials RAM or the iMac itself.
    Thanks

Do you still have the old ram? Was orig sticks of ram bad? What happens if you put only one stick of the orig ram back in ?

Try resetting the smc and pram.
    To reset the smc
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    To reset pram
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
