IMac works slower with Lion

Hi,
since I upgraded my iMac (bought it about 2 years ago) to Lion, the iMac Works much slower then with Snow Leopard.
Greetz,
Benjamin

It is slower, but the difference should not be significan 10% maybe. Some sites like Hardmac have processed with performance tests. Older Macs are slower, but newer Macs get faster with Lion.

To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

  • Does Ichat screen sharing work properly with Lion OSX?

Hello, I am planning to install the new OS Lion soon. However, I was wondering if the Ichat screen sharing works properly with Lion. I use the screen sharing quite a lot to communicate with my co-workers, so it's a deal breaker if the app crashes when using the screen sharing option. Thank you!

  • Will SL TimeMachine backups work OK with Lion?

After 2 years of intensive use and abuse, I am going to erase my 2008 iMac's hard drive running Snow Leopard and install Lion to get my computer back to as near as possible its "as new" condition.
I have done a final TimeMachine backup of my Mac running Snow Leopard.
After the complete erasure and installation of Lion will my TM backups work OK and seemlessly or is there anything I need to be aware of?

    Ian R. Brown wrote:
I just want to check that I will be able to access my old SL TM backups from my "new" Lion powered iMac?
    Yes, with a caveat:
If you don't do a full restore, or use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, to put your data back, the erased HD will be treated as a different one, and the next backup will be a full one, of everything on the drive.  That will, of course, take a lot of space.  Worse, the old backups will be treated as being on a different HD that's no longer available, and you'll need the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see them.
But, effective with Lion, you can probably force Time Machine to have the "new" disk "associated" with the old backups.  Then it will do only an incremental backup, of what's new or changed.  Note that if you use different user account short names, those accounts will be  backed-up in full.  Similarly, if you rename or reorganize folders, the new/renamed/moved ones will be backed-up in full.
See #B6 in the same link for instructions on "associating" the erased drive with the old backups.

  • Kwin works slower with Xorg 1.6. Why?

I've noticed that kwin works much slower with xorg 1.6.1 and fresh ati drivers than it used to with the old one. I've got radeon r9000. It worked normal with the previous Xorg. The problem is not only with kde4 but also xfce compositing. So if anyone knows what has changed in xorg's work with ati r250 let me know.
p.s. i've read the wiki. tried different settings. no result

I'm having a similar problem, but with any desktop environment. After a _lot_ of troubleshooting, I can say it is 100%  the ATI 7.4-2 driver and/or X 1.6.1
It seems to be a major thing, as most X 1.6 problem threads have something to do with an ati video card.
Here is my original (sorta) post.

  • WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?

I have an iMac G5 and an Airport  Extreme base station.  I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier.  ...Whats's the deal?

    Hi,
If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

  • Imac pre-installed with Lion?

I am switching from Mr. Gate's hardware/software... However, since I will be a 'newbie'...
I do NOT want Snow Leopard on a custom ordered Imac 27... I am reading of horror' stories with users who have 'down-loaded' Lion over existing
    Snow Leopard OS.
How can I custom order a new Imac 27 ... to have Lion and only Lion ... Pre-installed?
    Thank you!

    Clipper100,
First thing to remember these forums are technical help forums so you are getting a very skewed point of view. It's kind of like visiting a hospital to get a gauge on the overall health of a population!
However if you do order a new machine online from the Apple Store it will almost certainly be shipped with Lion. If you buy a machine from a brick and mortar Apple Store you can ask that Lion be installed before you leave in the event you buy a machine that came with Snow Leopard pre-installed. I'm sure they would be happy to do this service for you.
Whenever you purchase any machine (Windows, Mac, etc..) during a transition of operating systems there is going to be a little confusion until the transition is complete. Apple makes things easier and IMHO Lion was by far the easiest installation to date. My current iMac came with Tiger and I've updated it to Leopard, Snow Leopard and now Lion. All installations were easy and flawless because I keep my system healthy. Those that tend to have problems have unhealthy systems to begin with or simply cannot follow basic instructions.
Don't worry about it buy with confidence, I'm sure your experience will be a good one.
BTW because you are new to OS X I'd recommend bookmarking and using:

  • I need a printer that will work wirelessly with Lion os

Please help me find an all in one printer that will work wirelessly with the new Lion OS.
    I'm on my third printer...
    Thanks

Exactly what did you do when trying to set up the printers? Did you follow the mfr's instructions?
I also have an Epson (Artisan 810) and it works flawlessly - both wired and wirelessly. If I remember correctly, the instructions specifically said in order to set it up wirelessly, I had to connect it via USB first and then unplugged the cable at a specific point (following the instructions). And, the instructions included having to copy the printer's  MAC address (a series of numbers and letters) from the printer display panel and enter it at my router's (Netgear) online setup site.

  • Does MS Word work yet with Lion?

I keep reading that after people have downloaded Lion that MS Word refuses to work - my work depends on Word running smoothly.  Has anyone managed to make it work yet after installing Lion... have Microsoft released an update yet?  I really want to upgrade to Lion but if I do that and Word does not run then I will be in serious trouble with the boss - need help!!
    Many thanks,
    Jack

The problems you have been hearing about are specific to Word 2004.  Word 2004 was written for Macs that used the PowerPC processors.  When Apple released the Intel machines back in 2006, they included code (Rosetta) that allowed applications designed for the older PowerPC hardware to run on the Intel machines.  Rosetta was included with all OS X releases through Snow Leopard.  It is not practical to support older hardware indefinately.  So, Apple chose to not include Rosetta with Lion.  As a result, applications written for the PPC processors will not be able to run under Lion.

  • What antivirus works best with Lion?

I am running a mid 2010 build 13" MacBook Pro with Lion (from a clean install rather than from a Snow Leopard upgrade) and my existing Kaspersky antivirus for Mac licence is running out.
I occasionally use Parallels 6 & Windows 7 and have that protected by Norton.
Has anyone any recommendations on what is the best Mac antivirus program that is compatible with Lion?
    Thanks,
         george_51

    Thanks for the help everyone.
I found my machine to be really really slow the day after the Kaspersky licence had expired so I then deleted Kaspersky completely and guess what my machine was back to its usual swift self - definitely a thumbs down for the folks at Kaspersky... It also put an end to three automated e-mails a day from them asking me to renew my licence.
After looking around I trialled ClamXAV but then decided to rely on my Lion firewall, my own good sense (perhaps the weakest link in this chain) and Little Snitch which I bought after trialling the download.
    Job done.
