IMac would appear to be F*#@$'d

So the other night I shut down my computer, and moved it to another room, so I could work on a project without bothering anyone... When I plugged it back in it was running extremely slow, about twenty minutes to get to my desktop... Then about ten more to open system preferences, I had to search for my desktop items and they would materialize after about five minutes. Here's where it gets tricky, I tried to open photoshop, wouldn't work, safari, would'nt work, and so on. I'm not a computer expert by any means, but figured that a reinstall of OSX might do the trick, so I started the additional install (where the original system or user folders are not touched) Half way into it, the installer stopped, claiming it could not finish and to try it again, so I restarted, and when I tried to reinstall my hard drive was not there to install it in (not on the menu of available install locations), after that I tried to boot it without the disk only to have a gray screen and my fans at full speed. Running disk utitlity it said "the underlying task reported failure on exit" and any attempts to repair the disk fail as well... Anyway, I am just hoping that the files and my 5,000 song strong music collection can be saved, oh and the computer as well.
