IMac wouldn't turn on this morning...

Hi,
long time reader/first time writer.
over the last few days my computer has been turning itself off after i'd just booted up, before i'd even opened up any software.
and so this morning it wouldn't turn on at all. i tried all the obvious trouble shooting stuff. about 30mins after i'd tried to start it, it chimed and turned itself on. i did a 'first aid verify disk ' and got this slightly worrying message:
First aid failed

it hasn't crashed yet today. any ideas. thought i'd 'throw it out there' before i call up apple support or get someone in. any ideas would be much appreciated
thanks

Sounds like the Hard drive is toast. Might be repairable with Diskwarrior. I would bootup in target mode and see if another Mac can recognize it. Then backup everything.

I have purposely been ignoring your responses to my posts about the heat issues in the newer design iMacs, but if you want really want to ague the point...
First, the iMac is marketed as a desktop model Mac. Not a laptop or MacBook.
I have never owned a MacBook, so I can't attest to how much heat the MacBooks generate.
I Have two iMac models. A 2009, 27 inch screen iMac for myself. And a 2010, 21.5 inch screen iMac for my Fiancée.
As a desktop Mac these are hottest running desktop Macs I have ever owned. Period. I owned two beige Macs, a pre-G3 tower, aG3 desktop, a G4 MDD Tower, the original iMac, eMac, iMac G4 and now my current iMacs.
None of my previous Macs have ever, EVER ran this hot. I have never, also, had any component failures in any of the previous Macs I have owned, either. All of my Macs have been upgraded or modded to some degree over the years.  About 2 years ago I had to press my old G3 back into service. Both my G3 and G4 models have been heavily modded. The G3 ran without issue for a close friend for over a year until that friend went out a got a Mac Mini.
That's a 1996-97 Mac my friend. And it still is in working order and hasn't had any failures.
The fact I am pointing out here is that heat is an enemy to electronic components.
Whether desktop iMac or MacBooks, tightly packed enclosures of heat generating computer components with fans that do not run fast enough at most times to cool off the interior or exterior, will and does slow roast computer components to premature failure.
I do not know how frequent component failure is in the MacBook line up. So I can't attest to those.
I do not participate in those forums.
This is why at some point in computer history, Super Conputers were liquid cooled. PowerMac G5 systems were liquid cooled because they ran too hot!
I have taken my own precautions to keep my iMacs' heat down as much as possible.
I don't  have the money to keep buying a new Mac every 3-5 years when some catastrophic failure happens.
I had to purchase my iMacs used as I couldn't afford the cost of a new iMac with the specs I needed.
My idea, your idea and Apple's idea of acceptable operating temps we can argue all day long.
I feel, personally, that the operating temps are too high and exacerbate operational issues.
I Have been participating in these particular iMac forums for just over a year and have seen plenty of posts of iMac component failures due to both heat and dust, dirt issues from within the iMac.
There can be no other reason for all of these failures. The SuperDrive is, usually, the first to go bad.
It's probably due more to its vertical mounting, but the excessive interior heat isn't helping it.
Next to fail is the GPU. The last to fail, but the most expensive to fix, the Logic Board.
I Have seen plenty of posts in my last year here of all of these failures in iMac less than 5 years old and ,perhaps, a little older. 2008 model iMacs seem to have their issues, too!
Apple is focusing too much on design and aesthetics, rather than longevity of their products, I feel now.
A Mac isn't going to last 7- 10 years anymore.
I don't have stats and numbers. Just common sense.
This is my story and I am sticking to it. For what it's worth.

  • Need help with locating iPad with find my iPad app.. it was turned on this morning but won't show me the location.. why is this??

Need help to find location of iPad using find my iPad app.. Sound was activated this morning but it won't give me the location.. How can I find it??

    Hello there Kylie,
It sounds like your iPad is not showing in Find my iPad when you check it. Take a look at this info from the following article named:
iCloud: Troubleshooting Find My iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4006
Device does not appear in Find My iPhone
    This can occur if:
The date on your device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch) is incorrect. Choose Settings > General > Date & Time to check and set the date.
Your device is not up-to-date. It needs to be running iOS 5 or later.
Your iCloud account is not configured on your device. Choose Settings > iCloud and enter your iCloud account information.
You have multiple iCloud accounts entered on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Only one account can have Find My iPhone turned on at a given time. Log in to Find My iPhone with your other iCloud accounts until your device is listed.
There's a scheduled maintenance or another issue affecting Find My iPhone. Check the System Status site to see if this is the case.
Your device has lost network connectivity. If you have access to your device, and it appears to have an active Internet connection, enable and then disable Airplane mode. If you continue to have issues, turn the device off and back on.
Find My Mac can only locate your Mac if it is connected to the Internet via a known Wi-Fi network. If your Mac is connected to the Internet only by an Ethernet cable, Find My Mac will not be able to locate your Mac.
Device appears in Find My iPhone, but is offlineThis can occur if:
Your device is powered off, such as when the battery has run out. Note that the remaining battery for the device, if it's connected to the Internet, displays in the upper-right corner of the information pane of the selected device. You can still play a sound on, send a message to, issue a lock request, or initiate an erase of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The command will be received after the device is turned on and regains its Internet connection.
Your iPhone’s cellular service has been terminated by your wireless service provider. If you contacted your service provider to report your device lost or stolen before locating your phone, and they deactivated your SIM card or account, this would be expected. If this is the case, you may no longer be able to locate, display a message on, or erase your iPhone. For more information, read about what to do if your device is lost or stolen.
Your iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac is asleep and not connected to a known Wi-Fi network. You will still be able to request an erase, send a message to display and lock your device, or request that a sound be played. The command will be processed when your device is awakened and connected to the Internet.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Windows 7 wouldn't log on this morning

    Hi,
I had just installed the latest version of the Lenovo Toolbox that has a checkmark on the toolbox icon in the taskbar last night and have just fully backed up my whole system in case of a crash or whatever. When I turned on my laptop to check something before I went out for awhile to run errands I couldn't get Windows 7 to log on at all. It was displaying the spinning thing next to the word "welcome". At the moment, I do not have my laptop at home with me to do anything you might know of that I can do to get my back into the Windows 7 desktop 'cause I took it to a computer shop to have a guy check it out for me and see what's going on. All I did was backup my whole system and shutdown for the night then couldn't log back in at all the next morning. My laptop is running normally 'til it gets to the user screen. That's when it gets stuck when I select my user account name. Any ideas of why it did this? Just in case this happens again should I go into safe mode and revert back using system restore? I haven't made any system restore points after I upgraded the Lenovo Toolbox so hopefully the guy can do a revert back then all I have to do is reinstall it again. I wondered after this happened if I should've restarted my computer after installing this update. I've not done anything so I was kinda afraid to do something that might not work. Got work that needs to be done for a cousin and have to have my laptop to do it, but have an old laptop that is not mine anymore to get me by 'til I get mine back.
    Thanks,
    Liz
    Solved!

Nevermind... my Lenovo had viruses and that's why it wouldn't log on. It's okay now.

  • IMac wouldn't turn on

Every once in a while I have a problem with my iMac turning on. I have found that if I unplug the power cord and then plug it in again, it will turn on. Is this normal? My iMac is connected to surge protector. (I started a "search" but there are a "jillion" or so threads sort of related to this question.)

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.
Resetting the System Management Controller >>
Also, try running without plugged in the surge protector.

  • Plugged my iPhone five into charger overnight and can't get it to turn on this morning

Can't get my phone to power on

Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if, it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • HT2178 I do not have sound on my computer.  It was fine last night but when my husband turned it on this morning, there was now sound.  Also My iPhoto shuts down when I try to run a slide show.  I have just had my computer for 2 1/2 weeks.

I had sound on my computer last night but when turning on this morning there was no sound.  It is not muted.  Any suggestions.  Also, when I try to run an event in IPhoto as a slide show, it shuts down.

Just to clarify, does iPhoto unexpectedly quit or does your computer shut down? For the sound problem, try here:

  • IMac won't turn on... Help?

Just recently (this night,) whenever I would unplug my main USB hub, my iMac (Late 2006) would turn off (that is, instantly shut down as if the power had been disconnected). I don't know why this happened, but it turned on immediately afterward so I shrugged it off. The last time this happened, (the 4th time,) the iMac wouldn't turn back on at all.
It responds to power button presses, and you can hear the harddrive spinning up and the CD drive whirring and fans spinning. The sleep light in front stays on, but the display stays black, and it doesn't make the characteristic chime when it "turns on". In addition, it doesn't seem to be delivering power to USB devices, so there's no way that I can boot up from a startup disc or anything to see what's going on.
What do you guys think could be wrong with my computer? I doubt my non-existant applecare would cover anything of this sort, and I'm pretty sure that i'm SOL for hopes of a computer that just works. In addition, one other question. I was working on a VERY important school assignment at the time, (cliche, I know,) so is there any way I can connect another computer to my iMac so I can get my school assignment off of it?
    Thanks, Marcus

No such animal... it is either a G5 or an Intel. If it's running 10.6.4 it must be Intel.

Hard shutdowns can damage both hardware and software.

Only if it will boot intoFirewire target disk mode.Have you tried booting from your 10.6 Install Disk, holding the "c" key?
Have you tried starting in single user mode. If that works, at the prompt type *fsck -fy* remember to leave a blank space before the "-fy".
This will run a file system check, like Repair Disk and repair any problems if it can. If you run into errors run fsck multiple times until it reports OK. Then, type reboot to restart to OS X.

  • My 2012 iMac won't turn on. No response at all

My iMac will not respond what's so ever to the power button. I have no idea what to do

Hesitate to even suggest this, but the electric plug at the back of the iMac has been known to come loose.  Make sure it's in solid.
Reason I even suggest this is my GF called the other day, said her iMac wouldn't turn on.  I told her to check the plug and that fixed  it.
If you've already done that please ignore all this.

Hi, I was given an iMac Flat Screen over the weekend, it turned on ok, this morning when i turned it on there is a circle with a flashing ?, what does this mean, help!

It means that it cannot locate the operating system.
You need to reinstall from the disks that came with the iMac and which the vendor is required to give you.

  • This morning when I turned my macbook pro on, an alarm sound came from my computer and a thin, short line of light was flashing next to the pulsing light that did not come on.  The pulser light has not come on at all today.

This morning an alarm sound accompanied by a flashing thin light happened when I turned on my macbook pro.  Now the pulser light is not coming on at all and there is a steady thin light to the left of the pulser that stays on when I close my laptop.  Does anyone know what may have happened?

    >an alarm sound accompanied by a flashing thin light<
That seems like a memory problem.

  • RE:  Noisy fan on start up of iMac this morning.

My iMac is always extremely quiet.  I turned it on this morning and the fan is obviously noisy.  Is there a simple fix or might it require a trip to the shop?  Thank God I've learned to alway purchase an extended warranty on my Macs...
Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.
    Chris

I'm glad that you were able to find the solution on you own.
    Your welcome!

Thank you Shootist007. I cannot do even Update now. I probably should have spent the same amount of money on a new IMac!
No not really. If this is a brand new Macbook Pro take it back for a refund. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for Full refund.
Take it back, get the Full Refund (DO NOT LET THEM TRY TO FIX IT. YOU BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER NOT ONE THAT HAS BEEN WORKED ON OR NEEDS TO BE FIXED) and then decide whether to buy another Macbook Pro or the iMac. Or you could return it, get the Full refund and buy some other brand computer.
