IMac20-intel-USBmodem-AOL

I tried to install AOL on the new iMacG5 with the intel chip. Whenever I try to connect it tries to dial through TCP/IP settings although there are none and when I look at set-up in the AOL login window it shows the modem but will not allow me to save the USB modem. It defaults to bluetooth after closing the window.
I know the modem works as I have connected to an ISP and was able to surf the web.
Question: Does AOL work on the iMac with the intel core duo chip and a USB Apple 56k modem? If it does can anyone provide the settings for the network panel? This would include PPP and TCP/IP.

Thanks for the suggestions. They still did not help.
Here is what I tried:
Opened Network Preference
Deleted all locations
Selected only External USB modem as Network devise deselecting AirPort and Bluetooth
Selected: Location: Automatic
Selected: Show: External Modem
PPP: no changes made
TCP/IP: Configure IPv4: AOL Dialup
Modem: Apple External 56k USB Modem
When I try to dial AOL it tries to use TCP/IP settings and gives me an error. Then Internet Connection pops up saying you did not provide a number.
When I go to the AOL splash screen and check setup, I select add modem and when the window opens it says I am using Bluetooth. Selecting External modem which is available does not stay selected.
AOL says its is Apple’s problem and Apple Support says it is AOLs problem.
I went back to my G4 which uses the Apple internal modem and all settings as noted work.
Still looking for advise.
Should I try to trash the network preferences? and where would I find them? and which ones?

  • Share my Entourage calender on one computer with users/login accts ???

Hi, I've been searching the forums, and only see answers on this topic for people on work networks/exchange. My issue is for a single home iMac with three users with separate login accts.
My problem is that I have a new iMac and I got office2004 and I would like all the members of my family to use this computer and share the "ENTOURAGE CALENDER" so we can all see who is doing/going what and when.
I can't seem to figure this out and I need some help!!!! Can anyone explain how I can achieve this simply to me?
    I would greatly appreciate it.

There is no way to do that without a server being involved. I would recommend using Google Calendar to achieve something similar.

  • Share iCal among all the users on one iMac

I guess this is impossible, but I'll ask anyway. My family shares one iMac in the family room. We all have our own login profiles and we want to have a shared calender so we can see when and when we all have plans... Is this too much to ask for from a computer? I mean really, why is this so freaking hard to accomplish these days? We don't want .mac and we don't want to go on the web and use a calender... I've been trying to figure this out for what seems like eons... Help, please ???

  • Creating an image on external drive

    Greetings,
Although I have in the past successfully created an image of my entire internal drive (250 GB) onto an external Lacie FW (250 GB) when I now attempt to repeat the process, having re-formatted my Lacie, I get the message that "there is not enough space on the device" (Lacie)
Lacie support says I should "lower the size of the image I'm trying to create using my backup software" I'm using Disk Utility and as far as I know I can't limit the size of a disk image other than compressing and I need to keep the image read/write. Maybe I can do this with other back-up software? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers and thank you all for the very useful ideas in these discussion forums.

  • Can I add airport extreme(n) to my express network

I have a home network set up this way. Verizon DSL, Airport Express hooked up as main wireless router in my living room. I bought the new Airport extreme to put in my office where I have a computer with a printer and external hard drive, but there is no phone jack/dsl modem in that room. I want to add the Extreme to my current network, so all computers in the house can print and share the external harddrive I have ready to set up. I tried to add it multiple times last night, but it won't. I finds it briefly and then the extreme goes back to blinking yellow light.... Does the Extreme need to be the one hooked up the the LAN line? or can I have the Express be the main station? Thanks -doug

I did all this and still having trouble with setup. It seems the airport setup software that came with the iMac lets you configure alot more than the software ont he disk that came with the Airport Extreme. yet the software that came with the iMac says it isn't compatible with the new Extreme. I changed setting on my express to be WDS but still can't join the two. The iMac likes to awknowledge only one at a time. Next i'm considering conecting both the the dsl and setting up two networks and joining them. After both are connected, unplug the extreme and see it is still networks with the expres.. what do you think?

  • AOL (UK) on Intel Imac?

My brother is new to Mac and has just purchased an Imac Intel 20" here in the UK. I helped him get things up and running including his Linksys ADSL/Modem which has got Safari up and running without problems.
I have a one year old Imac G5 (non Intel) which came with AOL for Mac OSX pre-installed and I can use the AOL browser once signed in.
I noticed that there was a lack of AOL pre-loaded software in the Applications folder on my brothers machine! I downloaded AOL for Mac OSX for him (AOL is his ISP) but can not get it to open. Is there a problem with AOL on the intel Mac?
Any info or guidance would be appreciated

Well, Keith, I'm jammin' on my new Intel iMac and
loving it, and I'm actually using the same AOL
software I was using on my old G3 iMac.
I can't find a version number, but it's named as "AOL
for Mac OS X." And, unbelievably almost, it's way
faster than it used to be on my G3, so I'm not sure
if my previous message about Rosetta is relevant.
There was no pre-installed AOL, yet I had copied it
from the G3 to an external drive and then moved it to
    this new (WAYCOOLSUPERFAST) machine.
I'm using an Apple external modem (V.90). With the
setup assistant, there were questions about my ISP,
and I was forced to bypass the questions and choose
"no Internet connection" because of AOL's quirkiness.
However, once I copied the AOL software to my main
drive, things worked quiet well. I hope that might
give you some idea of where to go with your issue.
Not sure why you OS X AOL isn't working, but only
thing I would suggest is redownloading and trying it
again. It's clearly working for me, so there is hope,
    I guess.
    Again, good luck.

Hi, Thanks so much for your follow up post. Really pleased that you are up and 'flying' with AOL. I am going to give it another go at getting AOL (UK) onto my brother's intel G5.
    Good luck in the future.

  • The "about:config" move to restore the seach bar didn't work. I'm running OSX 10.9.5 on AOL/Firefox 37.0.1 on a mid 2007 intel iMac

I changed the "browser.search.show.OneOffButtons" boolean to "False" and restarted Firefox. When it didn't restore the search bar I went back and made sure it was entered as "False" and restarted again - no go.
I don't know where to go to search - Am I missing something obvious?

Maybe this isn't supported or otherwise overridden by the Firefox version that you use.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application from the Mozilla server and save the disk image file to the desktop

  • AOL Install Fix using CHUD Tools

    Hello,
For those of you who were asking about how to fix the AOL install problem on Intel Macs, here is a tip I found at macosxhints.com:
AOL seems to have a problem installing on multi-core Intel Macs. The installation hangs at "Installing Main Database." I found a successful workaround for this problem. Go to Apple's developer website and download the CHUD Tools. Once installed, there will be a Processor preference pane in System Preferences. Use this to turn off all but one Intel processor, then run the AOL installer. Once the installer finishes, turn the processors back on. Disabling CPUs solved install issues with other apps.
    JLM

Holy cow, what a piece of junk installer. SERIOUSLY?!?! The AOL engineers never in their lives tested their application on a multi-CPU machine?
Seriously. How would anyone trust something so junky to their machine.

  • I have aol for mac.  I can't figure out the mail or how to retrieve folders or mailboxes

First, I don't know if I have a mac intel or a ppc.  I don't know what that means.  Anyway, I have had a pc and aol since the dinosaur days.  Just the other day I got a mac.  I have had iphones since they began and my boys have macs so I thought what the heck.  Well, it is so confusing I am pulling my hair out.  My husband says icloud is on my phone, ipad and mac.  I am having trouble keeping all my photos from automatically moving to my phone.  I don't want 1400 photos on my phone, only some of them and can't figure out how to make it do that.
This question though is about the mail.  I loaded aol onto the mac.  I wanted all my mail to transfer over like it always has when changing pc's.  But it did not give that option with the mac, so it just brought over my account but not my mail, saved folders and all.  I have folders for bills, shopping, insurance, christmas, many many things.  Probably 12-15 of them and when I get email in that I need to keep, I put it in one of those folders and can go back to it at any time.  However with the apple, they don't have folders, they are called mailboxes.  Now I finally figured out how to make new mailboxes for each subject.  However, they do not show up on the left under the mail stuff.  You have to go to toolbar once you highlight the email and go to view, then to move to or something like that, then you see the folders.  If you click on one, supposedly the email goes in there.  However, there is no way to tell for sure because you cannot go to them at all otherwise.  And you can't open the folder cuz it is not in bold unless you are putting something in there.  Then it goes away.  So I don't know if it went in there so I can't delete it and it just keeps piling up.  Also, my sent mail doesn't save automatically, nor does anything else.  Right now my email has a dash out where it says how many emails you have incoming, but it was never there before and I don't think I got any of my mail today that I got now that I am on the pc so how do I take that off.
Also on the on the mac list it says it has like 80 something there, but it won't let me double click or see what it is, so I don't understand.  I just want to get it organized.
Thank you so much for your time.  I appreciate all the help I can get.

    Hi Janice
Fortunately, AOL keeps a copy of mail and folders on their server, so you can be reassured that the email is there, you just have to find a way to access it.
There are three ways to read AOL mail on your Mac.
    - You can open a browser such as Safari, log into http://aol.com, and read mail there (ie "webmail");
    - You can install the AOL Desktop software, which is probably what you had on the PC. I don't tend to recommend this, as there's usually no need to install extra software, and I've found it very sluggish on a Mac. However, for people who are very used to it and dont want to change, the option is there;
    - You can read AOL email in the Apple Mail application.
If you have added your AOL to Apple Mail, your mailboxes/folders should be available to you under a heading called "AOL" (you may have named your account differently). The mailboxes are on the left side - as mentioned above, you can hide and show the mailbox panel. (There's a "Show" button on the top left to reveal the mailboxes, which changes to "Hide" when you click it. If you already see "Hide", then you're fine.)
The server mailbox heading will be at the bottom of the mailbox panel on the bottom left. If you move your cursor over it, and you see the word "Show" appear, click that word. That will reveal the mailboxes within that server account.
In the example above, my server mail account is called "Google", but the principle is the same. Clicking "Show" will reveal all the mail folders held on the server. The same thing should work for your AOL account.
    Hope that helps.
    Matt

  • HT1338 Can I update my Mini 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo /4 GB 667 MHz DDR2?

    My Mini -- 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo /4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 —is "mid 2007".
What happens if I try to install Mtn Lion?
Because there is a lot of buggy stuff about 10.7.x.  For instance,
Wifi does not maintain a steady connection when using a non-airport wireless router (maddening when it goes "looking for Networks" when there is a steady signal coming from the modem.  This is consistently a buzz-kill when streaming virtually any video, and consistently happens w/ netfix.
No, it's not the wifi router.  Non-Apple equip has rock steady wifi signal and smooth, HD streaming.
Hardwired w/ Cat5, streaming video is no problem--and yes, I have trashed and reloaded Airport Utility, which definitely appears to be the culprit.
Itunes does all kinds of wonky things w/ smart playlists, etc/. etc.
Bluetooth has a mind of it's own--forgetting it's already paired to an Apple keyboard and trackpad when I power up another Mac within 20 feet.
DVD Player is so eratic I have given up and gone to VLC altogether--not quite as elegant an interface, but at least it's consistent AND alows me to jump over the junk promos studios insist I can't skip when played on DVD Player
In short —All the usual loose ends the software update never gets around to addressing, but that typically an upgrade will fix.
Theoretically, Mtn. Lion will only work on 2009 and later Mini's, but aside from buggy OS, (and, uh, eratic breaks in wifi signal) this mini works fine as a media center.
So what happens if I try to upgrade?
Is there perhaps a firmware update or a work around?
Yes, I am aware the unit is 5 years old, but I am strongly opposed to being strong-armed into buying new equip because of Apple's ever increasing tendency to eliminate legacy compatibillity.  Sure it's good for Apple, but terrible for both the environment and people like me on a fixed income in this economy.  Why toss a perfectly functional unit just to make the richest corporation in the world (or 2nd, whatever) richer?
    Thanks

Many thanks for your prompt reponse.  I expected as much, but thought the question worth asking.
Must admit it escapes why Mtn Lion should not be more broadly accessible, except for the blatant greed factor, which is growing increasingly tiresome.
I bought my 1st PowerBook in the late 80's for close to $3,000 and was a loyal evangelist for decades—both purchasing and recommending many, many Macs, until I started to buy a new MacBook Pro last year and encountered all that thunderbolt/HDMI baloney.  Then I started taking a harder look at whether Apple was genuinely attemtping to meet loyal user's needs, or simply exploiting the strength of the brand by non-legacy compatibility to drive increased sales.
Looking around a tad after I posted, the erratic wifi problem appears to be endemic--not just minis and not just 10.7.
I've gone through all the fixes, but Lion stubbornly persists in giving the flakest wif around--which is my main reason for wanting to try Mtn. Lion.  The rest of the new, uh, "features" definitely strike me as onanistic tweaking added gimmicks in the OS for tweaker's sake--no significant gain in usability.
Remember when stability was the Apple OS's chief virtue?  Ah, those were the days!
Now I am waiting for the Kool-Aid quaffers to start wising up before I can begin shorting the grossly over-valued stock.  The iPhone is losing ground fast.  Arrogant development and marketing strategies the likes of which driving Apple these days never last forever.  Remember as well when Microsoft caused fear and trembling with it's heedless hegemony?  Or how about IBM?  Or AOL?  Technology has a way of dealing with hubris.
    Best wishes for all, &c.

I left my computer on when I went out early this afternoon after again trying to open all kinds of websites in FF with no luck. I have purchases under an expired AOL account and very old Mac that I can no longer listen to on current versions of iTunes.  Previous version of iTunes accepted the music.  Now, I have a group of songs that will not sync to my iPod because it is associated with the old AOL account.  What do I do?

If you have an iBook G4, (PPC) you can't do much.
But if that is a MacBook (intel) you may be able to
upgrade the OS X, if the hardware is up to it...
Since there were about nine different build models
of MacBook (not powerpc iBook) to identify what
one you have would be the first step to knowing
what OS X and RAM upgrades it could use.
If the computer is not already at OS X 10.6.8,
it can't go online to get or use OS X 10.7.5. So,
when you more accurately describe the 'Book,
    detailed information is available.
When you find the serial number, there is a web
page that can be used to identify by serial no.
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
That'd be a first step. Or even the Model number
which should be visible on the outer case by hinge.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How doI /can I transfer my favorites and address book from AOL to Firefox

I previously used AOL as my browser & had several sites identified as "favorites", making it simple to bring them up.
I also had my own address book with several groupings.
I would like to transfer both these to Firefox/Mozi;lla/gmail if possible.
Is this possible & if so how & how do I then access them?

    Paul,
I just transferred my iCal info over to my Mac Mini and everything works fine there also.
So far, I think the only thing that may not transfer so well is AppleWorks.
If anyone hasn't already noticed, AppleWorks is not included with the new Intel Macs. Maybe Apple is trying to push Pages and iWorks, I don't know.
I haven't tried to transfer AppleWorks over as I don't intend to use it on the Mac Mini Intel anyway. Maybe I will try it when I get a chance.
The only software that I have upgraded so far is EvoCam. The old version for PPC worked OK on the Mac Mini but was acting goofy. With the new version which is universal, the program is acting normal again.
