IMac24" - RAM and video question

Hi,
Scrolling down the threads here I read that, with the 24" iMac, there is a bug where the NVIDIA graphics card tries to access data above 2Gb in RAM.
I'm soon to order my new iMac and, to make it as future proof as possible, I want to order it with 3Gb RAM.
I'm not a gamer, but I do a fair bit of photo and audio work, with some video as well.
Are these sort of application likely to cause the graphics card / RAM conflict?
And should I bother with the extra expense of the 7600 graphics card or won't it make any difference with what my main uses for the Mac are?

I'm sure not aware of any bug, Robin. I went ahead and maxed-out my 24" iMac, and I'm glad I did.

  • Ram and HD Questions

I know I have seen a suitable answer to my following question on this board before, but I can't seem locate it with the search function.
I would like to eventually, likely soon, upgrade my mini's 512 megabytes of ram with a 1 gig stick. For those doing this ourselves, what is the best and or cheapest (also expensive options please) ram that works with the mini and what sites carry it.
Also, has anyone actually installed a 7,200 rpm HD in the mini? I am also curious regarding any experiences with 5400 rpm do-it-yourself-void-the-warranty HD upgrades.
    Thank you,
    William

Actually I do have a 120 gig 7200 rpm Western Digital drive in a firewire enclosure. This was my first experience with firewire, and only 400 at that. Where I had previously had the drive housed in a USB enclosure, firewire's dedicated processing for i/o over the contention of system cpu cycles provides for such very competent usage and transfer rates that even now I still find myself impressed. I have often wondered, but never ran any associated benchmarks to dictate the change, if I am cheating myself by booting OS X from the internal IDE. I otherwise run and store my largest files and run my most frequented 800 meg+ programs and play videos and music off my Firewire drive.
Wouldn't it be nice, though, if firewire could be upgraded to 800 (or whatever) with only a firmware upgrade -- a nice flash or something.

  • Mini 311 - RAM and OS question (UK based)

I'm very interested in the Mini 311, because it is one of the few netbooks with both HDMI and VGA outputs that is in my price range (with decent enough graphics to do what I want with it).
But being in the UK, there is not yet any sign of a Windows 7 model (I spoke to HP sales on the phone, and they're not even sure IF it will make it over here, let alone WHEN).
I wouldn't mind this so much, as I still like XP, and am not likely to use many (if any) of Windows 7's new features on a netbook... But i've also heard that the XP models have a max RAM limit of 1GB, where as the Windows 7 models can be upgraded higher. Is this true?
If that IS the case, then i'd like some further opinions:
    1.  Is the Mini 311 still an adequate netbook with XP and 1GB of RAM... I will be using it for: Documents, Videos, Web-Surfing/MSN/Skype, and older games (particularly emulators of old consoles, such as SNES, Gameboy Advance, and N64 - via the HDMI port onto an HDTV).
    2. Is it worth me holding out to see if a Windows 7 model DOES come out in the UK... Or would it even be worth me getting a relative in the US to purchase one and send it to me (apparently all I need to do is buy a different AC adapter)? Or is the XP model good enough?
    3. Any better options for a netbook that has both HDMI and VGA, and has enough power to do what I want?
*EDIT* I also read somewhere that XP gives almost an hour better battery life than 7 with a 6-cell battery... any ideas whether that's true, or close to true?
    Thanks for any assistance!!

I will be using it for: Documents, Videos, Web-Surfing/MSN/Skype, and older games (particularly emulators of old consoles, such as SNES, Gameboy Advance, and N64 - via the HDMI port onto an HDTV).  Absolutely.  Unless you are doing graphics or video editing you'll love it.
    2. Is it worth me holding out to see if a Windows 7 model DOES come out in the UK... Or would it even be worth me getting a relative in the US to purchase one and send it to me (apparently all I need to do is buy a different AC adapter)? Or is the XP model good enough? I wouldn't wait.  Even here in the states the mini are only coming with Win 7 Premium, which doesn't run all older programs compatible with XP.  Win 7 Professional will run all XP programs but it'll cost ya!
    3. Any better options for a netbook that has both HDMI and VGA, and has enough power to do what I want?
Nope.  I wanted want you wanted and love this mini 311.  I was looking at a new Dell Inspireon (sp?) of some sort but ended up with the 311.
*EDIT* I also read somewhere that XP gives almost an hour better battery life than 7 with a 6-cell battery... any ideas whether that's true, or close to true?  I read that too but I think the test comparision was only running minumum applications.   Regardless, XP will provide somewhat longer battery life but I wouldn't let that be your deciding factor.
If you end up with a 311, make to update the drivers.  It took me awhile struggling to get the HDMI out untill I realized I had to update the video AND audio drivers.
    cheers

  • DVD Rom, RAM, and SSD question(s)

I purchased a nice T400 (6475-B14) on Ebay and I have upgraded a number of items on it to get it to where I want it.
I upgraded the OS to W7 Pro, put in a Lenovo 4GB RAM stick (now I have a 4GB and a 2GB), and I swapped out the HDD for an Intel X-25 G2 80GB SSD.
90% of the time the machine is great, however I have run into a few problems and I'm really hoping that someone here can help me.
The first issue, is the fact that every once in a while the machine can't start.  I end up having to restore the machine using R&R.  I don't know what could be the issue.  I've replaced the OS and HDD so I'm not sure what to do next.  I am by no means a computer expert, but could the mis-matched RAM (1X4GB with 1X2GB) be causing the problem?  I don't mind getting another 4GB stick, but if it won't do anything to fix the issue I don't want to waste the money.
Number two, I'm trying to burn an image recovery disk, but according to the Nero Tool I can't write with my drive (HL-DT-St DVD-ROM DU10N).  Do I need additional software?  I find it hard to believe that Lenovo would include a drive that only reads and is not capable of writing on DVD or CD, but based on the searches I've done on this forum and others, I can't find any other answer.
Lastly, the SSD seems to be working great (I've only had to restore the system once since installing it, see issue number one), but I see in the Lenovo download site there is an ISO file for SSD's.  However since I can't burn a DVD, I can't burn the ISO file.  So my question(s) is/are do I really need the software?  Can I use my Apple Mac Pro at home to burn the ISO file and then use that disk to install the software?
Sorry for the long, rambling questions, but I have tried to search a number of forums and the internet in general and I haven't been able find the answers.
    Thanks!
    GBA

    hello mate,
For your first issue the RAM can be the problem. U can mix different size of RAM but make sure to use DDR3 PC3-8500 or DDR3 PC3-10600 memory. And also the T400 does not support ECC be careful to don't mix ECC and non ECC memory.
For your second question your HL-DT-St DVD-ROM DU10N is just a DVD ROM reader and it's not capable to write any CD or DVD.
I don't know about the software for your SSD but if it's an ISO file for windows you can burn it with a mac it won't make a difference. All discs burned on the Mac work across platforms.

  • Sms, itunes and video question.

i have three basic questions. first, when someone sends me a long sms how do i view the entire message? second, do i have to buy itunes or can i take music that i have already d/l on my comp and put it on the phone? and last but not least, is iphone able to take videos? any and all help would be great. thanx in advance.

Each SMS message has a size limit but you simply scroll with your finger to view the entire message - no different from scrolling to read a long email or scrolling on a website.
The iTunes application is free and you must use iTunes to transfer music to an iPod or iPhone. You need the latest version of Tunes to activate an iPhone with AT&T Wireless so iTunes is required. You can import music from a purchased CD to iTunes and unless you downloaded music from a Windows based site that includes Microsoft's DRM protected music, you should be able to import this music into iTunes.
The iPhone's camera takes still photos only but the ability to capture video can be added as an update which may occur at some point.

  • Syncing pics and video question

I am using the new i phone 4 and are starting to get in to i movie and the camera on the phone. I have both a I mac at work and at home.
When I sync up to either machine the camera wants to sync with that machine which in essence calls it to load all the pics from that machines I photo to my phone. What I am more interested in doing is telling the I phone which pics to put on that machine in essence syncing my phone to the machine not the other way around.
What I really want to do also is be able to pick and choose which photos from my phone that I want to import and which that I do not..Is that possible! i.e. i would like to keep some videos on my phone as I edit them in I movie for my I phone...Is there a way to dump some of my camera roll into I photo and keep some of it. Please advise.
Bonus Question: My wife has an I phone and she and I are sharing the same I mac at home...Is there a way that we can set up individual I photo files as to keep our video and pics separate in I photo.

I was wondering this same thing. And I know what the OP is talking about. As there are ways to do what he is talking about, (work arounds) - it still isn't just plain cut and dry like it should be. I have no clue why this great phone has so many little downsides that it doesn't need to have.
First off, this "syncing" name to do what has been done over years on other devices which is called "transferring files" or "Import" and "Export" is just stupid, and on top of that completely limiting.
What I and the OP would like to do, and have it be like is more like, when I plug in my iPhone I don't want to have to "sync" crap, what I want to do is have it operate more like a mini firewire drive has been plugged into my computer. I would like to take certain things off my iPhone, leaving other things, and take ONLY certain things off my computer and put them into my iPhone. Be able to delete anything from my iPhone I want and vice versa.
This "syncing" crap is ridiculous. I mean, I found work arounds, but its stupid to have to do that. IE: If I want to delete photos from my iPhone that I got from my computer, I can't do it !! I simply can not go to my phone and check photos to delete and delete them.. HA !! Is that ridiculous or what ? What I have to do is "sync" a empty folder to it, then it wipes it out. BUT its limiting because, what if I only want to delete a few, and keep some others ? Well, yes, I have to then create a "sync" folder with them photos I want to keep, but none others, then sync it, and there it is. Its totally redundant and stupid and there is no reason for it.
That is alot of steps to just do what normally should be able to be done. Seriously what is Steve Jobs thinking with some of these things ?
This SAME thing applies to ringtones I made and got into my iPhone. I can not delete them !! I have to use the above process to accomplish this as well.
What we want, and the way it should be is more of a "import" and "export" thing. NOT this "sync" idea. Its stupid. It takes too much control over my iPhone and files, and I want to be in complete control of my iPhone and files. I paid for it, why not ?.
This also applies to the music, and just all "syncing" cases with this iPhone and iTunes. It causes accidental complete erasures of your carefully compiled files and vice versa. It is completely to "do it all or nothing at all" type of thing. Steve Jobs swears I want my whole music library on my iPhone at all times. Or all my photos, and then he wants to take control of them.
I say get rid of "Sync" and give me "Import" and "Export" of my personally created files along with complete control of what I want to keep where and what I don't. JUST like a mini firewire drive was attached and how that works. It would be SOOOOO much more simple. And make sooooo much more sense. Then have premade tags of any thing we purchased and was copywriten that makes those things NOT be able to be transfered around without syncing and it taking control like it does now so it can't be anywhere but with who purchased it.

  • MSI P67A-C45 - C-State, Turbo Boost, RAM and UEFI questions

I received my MSI P67A-C45 B3 a few days ago. After having installed the OS and the rest, I tried to enable C-State (no limit) and surprisingly it works (with the B2 it caused a freeze). After some time I noticed a sort of high pitched noise and I knew it was the C-State because I had read it here. So I just disabled it, later I'll tray to see if the other C-States (C3, C6, etc.) work without any noise. I'll also try different combinations of the phase mode, currently I'm using Intel SVID because it has a slightly lower idle voltage.
    1) First thing, why do I hear a noise only when C-State is enabled? I'm curious.
    2) I've also read that disabling the C-State affects how Turbo Boost works, is it true? If yes, what is the difference? Honestly I don't see any relation, one is a power saving feature and the other gives temporary extra performance when needed.
    3) About the B3, I noticed that my RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws 1333MHz) haven't the correct timings, they are one value higher (more loose, for example 10 instead of 9).
This didn't happen with the B2 and UEFI 1.8, all the timings were exactly those in the JEDEC #4 profile. I see that in version 1.9 and 1.A they've improved memory compatibility, perhaps it's related?
Anyway since it doesn't matter to me I just left them on auto.
    4) I'm not planning to update my UEFI (B3 came with v1.9) for a few months since it works fine (except that small RAM problem) and I don't overclock.
I noticed that the latest version is 1.A, so it's normal to use 1.A after 1.9? I've never seen it before.

    Thanks!
Does someone know anything about question #2?
    @krkrkr
I'm currently using APS mode with C-State enabled and the noise isn't there. The strange thing is that the Vcore is the same both with C-State enabled or disabled. Anyway I think I'll continue using APS mode with C-State enabled, thanks.
Now I have a problem, I'm trying to update the UEFI but it doesn't work. I downloaded UEFI v1.A for the B3, then I used method I of the MSI HQ Tool but during the UEFI update it blocks at "Preparing to take a new BIOS backup". It just stays like that all the time...
    How can I resolve?
Now I still have v1.9 and if I go in the CPU features I get "Error invalid input method" (or something similar, I can't remember properly). Before trying to update it didn't happen.

  • Question about iMac Video Cards and Video Ram

I'm trying to decide between two 2012 iMacs. I'm buying it to run Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to edit and render 1080-720p video footage. The cheaper Mac has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory. The higher end one has, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Most importantly, is the extra GB of Vram worth it? Secondarily, is the GTX 680MX(vs. 675MX) worth it? I'm trying to keep it cheap, so unless there's a notable difference, I need to go with the first one. Thanks for the help!

mostly video memory is used to hold textures for fast blittering when one run fullscreen 3d games 2d image program and video edit programs does not really take advantage of more video memory then they need to hold the back buffer of the screen which is pretty much just horizontal amount of columns multiplied by vertical lines multiplied by 4 as in the 4 bytes used by the colours

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • ML Ram, VRAM paging and allocation questions.

Question 1: I have been dealing with ram issues since I got my 2012 13 MacBook air since I put mountain lion on it. I benched the machine for awhile because of it and used my 2011 MBP since it has 16gb of ram but it recently gave up the ghost so im back on the air. I did all the updates it needed since being benched and for my light duty work it’s always good but as soon as I have more then 2 or 3 apps open at the same time or 6 or 7 safari tab it really goes to crap. After a cold boot with nothing running the OS is using 1.4-1.6gb ram to idle the older MBP used 1gb or less after a cold boot. I have gone to the trouble of doing a complete reinstall and not using any extra apps other then iLife and iWork and that hasn’t helped. The wired ram sits right at a gig and the active ram right around 4-5 hundred mb. I have added up all the running processes and factored in a 10% increase over that number just in case and added in the video ram(which with 4gb of system ram I thought was supposed to be 384mb but its actually 512mb, which is another topics ill be asking about) at 512mb the totally ram usage is only 918mb. I asked this once before and didn’t get any help so ill ask again, is this ram usage normal for this kind of machine or is there something wrong? The apple store says there isn’t anything wrong but there has to either be something wrong or the OS has hidden processes that cant be seen in activity monitor?
Question 2: did one of the updates increase the video ram allocation and is the video ram automatically and always paged or does the OS and graphics processor (HD4k) page VRAM only as needed?
If the graphics processor doenst always page all the video ram and does it dynamically then I have an even bigger problem and more ram being used and not accounted for.

Your issue almost certainly has nothing to do with RAM. Right now I am running Photoshop, FileMaker Pro, Word, iTunes, Mail, I have 8 tabs open in Safari, and about little utilities running. It is a 2011 MBA with 4GB of RAM and it feels no slower now than it did when I rebooted it yesterday after installing an update.
Obsessing over the Activity Monitor's report of RAM usage will get you nowhere - there's only one number in the entire dialog box that has any real importance to us: Page Outs - which indicate how much data has had to be swapped from RAM to hard drive, which, of course means you are trying to use more RAM than the computer actually has.
I suggest that you take a close look at what processes are running and the CPU usage of each. You may have a rogue process that is bogging the computer down. Another two prime suspects would be Internet plug-ins and Safari extensions.
One of my most important troubleshooting tools is a test account in which I've installed no software or performed any configurations. When my computer acts up I boot into that account to see if the problem follows me there. If it does not, I know the problem exists in my library.

Here are the steps I though I took this morning:
    Backup iPad
Connect to iTunes and downlaod newest version of iTunes and then newest iOS
    restart Vista Laptop
    upgrade to newest iOS
I knew somethign was wrong when it took about 6 hours to upgrade the iPad
at the end it errored with this message error (-50), but the upgrade worked
I was expecting to see all my photos but didn't see them
I have tried a restore to a back up 2 times.  The first time took 3 hours and just sort of timed out - it kept saying that there was an hour to go
I tried it again 2 hours ago and same message.
They are very valuable to me and so now I am panicking
    Your help is much appreciated

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Question About "Manually Manage Music and Videos"

    Hi!
I have a podcast stuck on my iPod. It is not deleted from a Playlist upon syncing, even though I've deleted it from the Playlist in iTunes. It still shows up in the "On My Device" representation of the Playlist, and of course, on the iPod itself. So I thought to manually delete it, but of course it's name is obfuscated in the iPod's directory. So I thought that maybe I could do it by selecting "manually manage music and videos" in iTunes. Presumably files would become human readable then, yes?
Here's my question: What will happen to all the content already on my iPod via syncing if I check that box? Will it all (all 140 GB) disappear and have to be re-synced? Or can I check that box, go in and delete the one podcast, then uncheck the box, all without affecting the rest of the content already on the device?
    TIA for your help!

If you post from a a question from the bottom of an article's page then you should get its reference, e.g. HT1535 in your case, on the post's title. The ability to edit you post only lasts for 15 minutes and allows you to correct/add extra info.
I get the 'manually manage music and videos' tockbox as described on that article. If you only 'videos' then are you using iTunes Match on your iPad ? I don't use it but I've seen posts that say having it enabled on a device can affect the syncing of music.
