IMac8,1 Early 2008 Spontaneous Screen Blanking, Crashing related to LiveScribe PenCommService??
Previous support topics addressing the issue of iMac screen blanking and OS crashing suggest incompatible software as a possible cause of screen blanking and crashing.
While my MacBook Pro 2008 also runs with the same software combination as the iMac, the MacBook is currently not having the screen blanking or crashing issues.
AHT on this iMac8,1 20" passed with hardware OK. Screen blanking and crashing continued however.
Console logs below lists errors with the PenCommService, that is part of LiveScribe desktop version 2.8.3 which is installed on both the iMac and MacBook Pro.
Since uninstalling LiveScribe 2.8.3 from the iMac two days ago, blanking and crashing seems to have stopped occurring on that machine.

The first thing to do when you suspect overheating is to clean the air intake vents on the bottom edge of the case. While there, remove the RAM dorr and check the RAM bay. Some really big dust bunnies can take up residence in the RAM bay.
Make sure the exhaust slot at the top of the case back is clear and at least six inches (~150mm) for any part of your deks r the wall behind.
Also look at stuff on your desk directly under the computer. The only iMac overheating episode I've encountered was when someone left me a ziplock bag of CD sleeves. They shoved the bag directly under the computer case and the bag was within millimeters of the air intakes. Even though only about 7 inches of the roughly 25 inches of air vents were occluded, the temp monitor in my menubar and an independent thermometer with which I monitor exhaust air temperature both showed the computer running a little hotter than normal. I removed the bag and hte temps quickly fell back to norma.
Some utility software that seems innocent enough can run up your temps. Anti-virus and internet security programs can do it. So can so-called "cleaning" and "optimization" software. Third-party backup software such as that which comes with many "name-brand" external hard drives can affect running temps.
Can you give us and idea of what third-aparty utilities cae installed?
Did the tech at Apple say anything specific about what kind of hardware problem you have?

IMac (early 2008): grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel
Hi there,
I have recently had a problem with my iMac - it started with distorted graphics and I booted into Safe Boot to back up all files with the intention of reinstalling OS X (either from original install CDs or from USB drive with Mountain Lion on). Safe Boot got rid of the distorted graphics but as I rebooted to reinstall, the iMac hung on the spinning wheel on a grey screen with the Apple logo.
I have tried (in no particular order) : resetting PRAM and SMC, booting from original install CDs, booting from the self-created Mountain Lion USB stick, booting into Safe Boot again, booting normally, taking out keyboard/mouse and booting normally... the pinwheel either freezes, the iMac reboots itself, or comes up with a screen telling me to reboot due to a problem. If I hold down command-V at startup it always freezes/fails at the same point and there's usually a previous shutdown cause of 3 or -128?!
I don't seem to be able to run the hardware test either from DVD or internet, I can boot into single user mode and the iMac will stay up for hours but I don't know what to look at or what to fix! There are kernel panic logs relating to some of the shutdowns but as I can't view these out of single-user mode I can't attach them to the post but can look & reply on another machine.
It's an early 2008 iMac, 24" screen, running OS X 10.8.2 - I'd appreciate any help and will try to provide any extra information anyone needs (that I can glean from single user mode, anyway!)
Kind regards,
CarlyI've looked at that, I did try to link the discussion to the article but it failed too Thank you though.
I just created an Ubuntu DVD to run - the graphics are distorted on that too so I'm guessing it's a fault with the graphics card. I don't have the knowledge to confirm/deny it so a trip to an Apple Store is probably in order? -
IMac early 2008 occasional screen flicker with external monitor
I am experiencing flickering with my early 2008 iMac when driving an external monitor. My Thinkpad is flawless when pushing out to the monitor.
It will be fine, but occassionaly (every 5-20seconds) the screen gives a little flicker, about 1/4 of a second in duration.
Also, sometimes, there is no flickering, it depends on what is being displayed, which makes me think video card. I am using the 2400XT and my software is up to date.
ROM Revision: 113-B2250H-259
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.259
I am thinking about trying to source a 2600pro that came on the more high end version of my iMac and swap out the graphics card. I also want to drop a 2TB hdd in it, so I figure I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone, or kill 1 iMac with 2 simutaneous upgrades if I am unlucky! (o_O)iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:

I'm providing that so you can look for something equivalent. -
Mac Pro (early 2008) black screen after 2015-004 Mavericks security update
Hi,
My Mac Pro (early 2008) does not start up after 2015-004 security update last week. I can't
get anything on my monitors. I can hear it starts booting, but not sure if does so fully, because the screen
stays black. Have tried all the different booting options, e.g. safe boot, but no effect. Is there a way to revert
the update or even do a clean OS install, even if I can't see anything on the monitor?
I just noticed that Apple has released a supplemental update today for Yosemite 10.10.3,
"that will fix video driver issuesthat will prevent your mac from starting up when running certain apps that capture video"
I am wondering if this is my problem, even if I use Mavericks. Any thoughts?Try booting to Recovery and repairing the the startup disk via Disk Utility.

Operating System Mavericks (10.9.4)
Hi,
I received this mac yesterday from an eBay seller. Everything once booted is running well, I spent most of the day yesterday installing various softwares such as the Adobe Creative Suite (CS6). Then all of a sudden, after around 8 hours of using the machine and editing some video content on Premiere Pro, I get this black screen (with absolutely no warning). The computer didn't change tone or anything with the way it was running, it sounded the exact same as it was. It wasn't like there was no signal coming from the graphics card, there was a signal, it was just a black screen (no cursor or anything). Eventually, I had to turn off the computer using the button on the front.
I have messaged the person who sold me the computer about this, and he has said "The problem is very simple: VGA card goes to sleep. You can change the 'go to sleep time' as Windows system, but don't know where this is with a mac". I've googled to the end of the earth but can't seem to find anything on it!
I've attached these screen shots too just in case...
Any help would be greatly appreciated or happy to answer any questions,
Thanks,

I have an early 2008 24" iMac which has been our faithful family computer. It started slowing down quite a bit so we bought a new one for home. I then replaced the existing HD with an OWC SSD. It helped immensely, like having a new computer.
Brought it to the office, upgraded OS to Yosemite, running Parallels and Windows 8. Suddenly I have screen burn. Never had this problem before upgrades. I've only had it at the office for the past 1 week.
Now I have to admit, I don't think she's gone into sleep mode at night so I need to check the settings. But I can't believe this happened so quickly. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem or is my screen irreparably damaged? By the way, I tried Jscreenfix without success.
Thanks in advance
JohnIt's actually not screen burn, so you don't need to worry about that. Please read Apple's advice on the subject:

Early 2008 MBP screen not turning on
I have a 15 inch early 2008 MBP that the screen will not turn on. When i power on, the hard drive makes a sound that its turning on, but then nothing happens, there is just a black screen. The indication light is on, but again, nothing on the screen. I have tried pulling out the battery, resetting everything i can reset, but still nothing. Any ideas?
Hi B,
You may have the NVIDIA issue. If you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU it is covered under the free repair program. Bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
There have been stories of, ummm, "uninformed" workers, so print out the article, familiarize yourself with it, and if you meet resistance, politely/firmly stand your ground and ask for someone higher up the food chain if need be. The GPU is part of the logic board, so "repairing" it means replacing the logic board (Some workers have tried to play word games, saying the logic board needed to be replaced so it wasn't a covered repair because it wasn't just the GPU. Grrrrrr!). Good luck! -
Early 2008 MBP screen turns off/on (not NVidia issue)
My MBP is an early 2008 A1260 15" and the screen suddenly turns off and on. Originally I thought it was the NVidia issue but that doesn't seem to be the case because I can hook up an external monitor and get video. I took it apart to check any loose video cables on both the logic board or behind the screen itself and everything seemed intact. I even pushed everything firmly in to make sure the connections were making good contact. The backlight also lights up but without any image so the inverter is not to blame either. Then as I figure it's simply the LCD that has gone bad and i'm using my comp through the external monitor the screen suddenly turns back on and works. Later shuts off and back on. This makes me think it's a faulty cable however everything is connected properly and there were no signs of damage to the video cable.
Any suggestions as to what to check or this could be? I don't want to pay nearly $150 to replace the LCD screen if that's not it. :/Allow me to elaborate the situation...
Taking in to Apple = $350
Purchasing a new display and replacing it myself = $150
New video cable = $30
Taking it to Apple = No.
I can fix computers on my own but I am a bit stuck on this slightly odd situation so I would greatly appreciate any replies to not include the response, "Take it in to Apple."
I appreciate the suggestion but that's not going to happen after I already took it in thinking it was the NVidia issue and there found it was a display problem.
You're right that it seems it's a component that's failing but that's why I am asking, which other components should I check? Any other similar issues? Etc.
Thank you -
IMac (Early 2008 Model) Screen Greys Out And Then Must Reboot
The iMac that we bought back in the summer of 2008 has been having issues over the past couple days. I was using Safari yesterday and then a grey "box" filled the screen and then told me to shut down the computer (by holding down the power button) and then restart it. I did that and I was back on my way. Then a few other people used the iMac (on their own accounts using Safari and iMovie) and had no problems. Just an hour ago I was exporting a video in iMovie and was using Safari at the same tiime and the screen greyed out again. I restarted it and this time I got 3 beeps with a 5 second pause in between over and over again while the screen was black. I held down the power button and it turned off; I waited a few minutes and turned it back on and now its working again. Any idea what's going on? I upgraded the RAM and upgraded to Lion last month. I have not reset the PRAM yet, I would like to know what the problem is and why this keeps randomly happening to what seems to only be my user account.
I've looked at that, I did try to link the discussion to the article but it failed too Thank you though.

Mac Pro (Early 2008) black screen on startup diagnostic LED #3 lit (ERR B)
Hi All
I turned on my macpro this morning saw some bizzare lines on my cinema display and then I immediately tried to reboot and then my display went black. No video was being displayed. Keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. I have done some research and did all suggestions (resetting pram) resetting power/ unplugging etc. I finally opened up my computer and noticed that the red diagnostic light #3 was lit (ERR B). Which is as far as could find and instructional error.
I brought it down to the base configuration, removing extra ram and hard drives but still nothing. The computer does turn on, fans are whirring but no output to display no keyboard response nothing.
(The monitor works fine, I connected it to my laptop and it works, so I already ruled that out)
Unfortunately I don't have apple care and my warranty ran out as of last July. I'm about to take it in to apple store but I'm curious as to if anybody had a similiar experience and what it could be. My best guess is that it could be the video card (the stock ATI Radeon 2600XT) but could it be something more serious?
This computer is my lifeblood and work. And I have seen the service manual to find out what and why my diagnostic LED #3 is lit (ERR B)
Any suggestions or advice will truly be appreciated.
Thanks.
And also I cant even open the dvd drive to boot up from system disk or run diagnostics, or is there some other way?Hi vkim125,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
After some searching I've found that LED #3 is associated with video display. But could bevelop into a Logic Board error. (Which would mean you would have to replace the computer's motherboard.
Therefore.
I suggest you reset the System Management Controller (Which is reponsible for a number of core processes, video included.)
Follow the instructions from this Knowledge Base article.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806
Hopefully that should help you resolve the issue> If not post again here; I'll look more into the issue and see if I can get you more detailed information.
Kind regards,
Peter. -
Yosemite update, MAC Book Pro early 2008 - Dead like. Overheated, Blank screen
Before 3 days I installed the latest updated for Yosemite. After the update, I make the laptop “sleep”. But I noticed that while sleeping the power LED indicator behaved in a strange way. Also the laptop was very hot and after couple of hours of sleep, It count be powered on.
I pull out the battery and power cable to cool id down. After that is was OK.
This same scenario was repeating last 2 day, always while the laptop was off/in-sleep.
Now no the 3th day, I noticed the battery is drain out. Now it is fully recharged, but the Laptop want to power on.
After powering on, the Led indicator is glowing like (half-intensity) and noting happens. The screen is blank.
Can someone advise me, what to do?
Some notes:
================
-The device is MAC Book Pro early 2008
-The battery is New, used for about 3 weeks, without problems
-I tried and alternative (old, original) battery, but it is the same. Which makes me think the problem isn`t in battery.
-It happened right after the Yosemite update.
-While sleep it was very hot
-LED indicator behaves strange
Thank you for any advice or tip.Sorry for the spelling I am dyslex.....
I had this happen to.
For some unknown resin my 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro overheated and witch killed it. Requires a new Logic Board.
Resions for this diagnoses:
1) The laptop was running Sarfia in Yosemite before before I closed the lid.
2) I did not take note that when I had put the laptop down it had not gone to sleep.
3) When after 3 hours shopping, I picked the laptop up it was VERY! hot on the bottom (much hotter than it has ever been) (and it was not the battery)
4) Before I got it turned off by pressing the power button the fans where running but not fast.
5) I let it cool down before trying to turn it back on.
6) I tried all the reset operations
7) The disk drives (HDD and Optical) spin up and did the diags.
What I don't know is:
1) Why did not the thearmail shutdown not kick in?
2) Why when I picked it up and it was clearly VERY HOT! the fans where not running fast?
3) If the OS was doing something (update while asleep)?
4) If the OS was doing something how and why did it stop the fans spinning fast to keep the laptop cool.
Sadley I now have to shell out for a new Logic Board. -
Mac Pro (Early 2008) periodically crashes in unusual way, requires reinstall
Mac Pro (Early 2008), 2 x Intel Quad-core Xeon 3.2 GHz (8 cores), 14 GB RAM, 3 TB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 and/or ATI Radeon HD 4870), OS X Lion 10.7.4
OK, I've got a weird one here. Every few days, my machine crashes in an unusual manner. Examples:
* the first time this happened, any attempt to play a video file (either from within iTunes or externally using Quicktime) would result in a blank, black video window, but I could still hear the sound from the video. If I moved my mouse within the black window I'd get playback controls and when pressed, I could hear the audio rewind/fast forward/etc. (but of course the video window would remain black) Also, any attempt to use screen sharing would result in a completely white window where the remote screen should be.
* another time this happened, I would constantly get the error message that VTDecoderXPCService quit unexpectedly, even if I wasn't playing a video. Trying the suggested fixes from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193904?start=15&tstart=0 did not fix the issue.
* another time this happened, the machine appeared to work fine, except any attempt to access System Preferences resulted in the spinning beach ball of death and would completely lock up the machine.
In any case, rebooting the machine does not result in the problem being fixed -- in fact, it gets worse. After I reboot, I am unable to log in to my machine at all. Either the desktop window flashes briefly but then it goes back to the login screen, or the login screen never appears. I have tried both the "guest" account as well as a standard "test" user I set up when I first installed OS X (i.e. a "clean" user), and none of those help.
What *does* help, however, is completely reinstalling OS X Lion (including running the combo updater to get back to 10.7.4). Once I do this, the machine becomes usable again, and I can use it error-free for a few more days - after which it fails again in some strange manner.
At first I thought my hard drive might be failing; however replacing the hard drive did not help. I then thought that I might have a glitchy graphics card (the black video windows and the VTDecoderXPCService crashing suggested this to me). However replacing the video card didn't help either. (I tried another GeForce GT 120 as well as an ATI Radeon HD 4870, both of which were known to be good in other machines). I have also tried countless times fixing permissions, clearing cache files, etc. and none of that helps. The only thing that brings this machine back from the dead is, like I said before, reinstalling OS X - but only for a few days.
I didn't see anything out of the ordinary when checking the system log files.
In case there was some sort of hardware problem going on, I tried running Apple Hardware Test overnight in loop mode. The hardware passed all checks. I also tried running Memtest86+ overnight, again with no failures or errors.
The machine doesn't seem to me to run particularly hot - typically temps hover in the 40-45 C range, and can jump to 55-60 when doing heavy activity (mostly video encoding). Voltage levels look good as well. (I'm using iStat Menus for both the temperature and voltage readings)
I'm about at my wit's end here. Unfortunately the machine is out of warranty (AppleCare too) and I don't really have the money to take this into a shop and get it diagnosed. So does anyone have any ideas? Results from Step 1:

Mac Pro Early 2008 Crash on Boot Up
I have a Mac Pro early 2008 running OSX 10.8.5, and yesterday morning for seemingly no reason I had a screen corruption and freeze up, a kernel panic and then it rebooted itself. I have tried all of the memory( no flashing LED over power switch), cleared and reset all of the PRAM via keyboard and motherboard etc etc and everytime I reboot it crashes at the same point with a screen corruption and reboot. When I tried to boot in safe mode it the bar got 50% of the way across and it rebooted. I booted in verbose mode and single user mode and on both the last entry related to 'Ambrosiaaudiosupport' (as best I can remember) before it rebooted itself again. I sent the Kernel Panic to Apple but as I cannot get back into the OS I cannot obtain another.
Is there a solution to this please, and if so what do I need to do to rectify it
Many thanks in advance
AlanIf you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select View ▹ Show Log List from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Early 2008 Mac Pro - Mountain Lion Crashing
I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro. After upgrading from Lion I have been experiencing random crashes while using varoious applications (anything from more processor instensive applications like Adobe CS6 products or even just running Mail or Safari with little activity). It seems that many of the crashes happen while 'swiping' between screens, but not all crashes seem to be triggered that way. I'm inclined to think that these problems are from a software related issue because I wasn't experiencing any of these types of problems on Lion.
The crash sequence happens the same each time:
1. Monitor brightness subtly and briefly increases.
2. A gray screen appears for 2-4 seconds.
3. Then the screen returns to the desktop view, all the Apps have crashed (usually losing most recent data) and are then in the process of re-starting automatically.
4. No error logs ever appear for any of the Apps. In Lion, I was used to seeing the computer generate an error log, but these crashes do not make any error logs appear. I'm not sure if this is a product of ML or just the instance of this particular problem.
*Note - The system is responsive after the crash happens, and I never have to restart the computer.
I ran the 'Verify' hard drive test (found in Disk Utility) and my hard drive came up clean.
I also ran the Apple hardware test from the original install discs and that came up clean as well.
I'm trying to determine my next steps. Do I try a fresh install of ML on a new hard drive? Are there drivers that need to be updated on my current hard drive?
Please feel free to point me to threads that already address this issue. Thank you. Here's the Full .crash report:
