IMac8,1 not reading CDs with Matshita DVD-R UJ-875

I recently began having trouble reading audio CDs. The disc fails to mount and ejects. Any thoughts out there?

  • IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this.  Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs.  Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down.  It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ-875:  I cannot get it to accept blank DVD and CDs.

I have the super-drive Matshita DVD-R UJ-875. I have tried 5 different brands of DVDs they all get spit out. (My Macbook accepts them.) My iMac has some trouble reading a few DVD movie discs, but I eventually get it to go. CDs seem to have no trouble. Just blank DVDs and CDs get spit out. I get one success every about 50 discs to stay in and can burn. I have had the problem when running in Leopard, but not so much so, now I have the problem much more profound after updating to Snow Leopard in September. I switched from PC to Mac because my wife really enjoys video and photo editing on it. She feels very let down that she cannot burn any of her work. I really want to get this fixed. Anyone have any advice? I do have the 3 year warranty, but want to avoid taking it in if possible.

Having the same problem with my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 drive on my Intel 24" imac. It still reads commercial CD and DVD discs, but for some reason spits out 75% of the CD-R discs I put in and now refuses to burn anything onto any blank CD I put into Itunes (on the few it WILL read to begin with). I suppose I will take it to the local authorized Apple repair shop and wait a few days to get it back. This will be the third time I have had it in since purchasing it in 2008. Once to have the defective hard drive replaced, again to have a defective hard drive fan replaced and now this. On one hand I am very glad I bought that $129 AppleCare, but on the other, I am tired of dragging this huge thing around and being without it for so long.

  • MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Anyone know which media are compatible with this

    Hi,
I bought the Matshita DVD-RAM US-875S from the PowerBook Guy and installed it in my G4 Pismo. I have corresponded with their support--who reply, but without actually answering. On PowerBook Guy's site, the thing is described as a Superdrive DL DVD-R-RW burner/player. I know this is a very basic question but I need to know if that means it will burn and play ONLY DVD-R and -RW whether DL or regular. I've asked them and they just say "It supports several different media. Ask on the Matsushita site."
Okay, there is probably some Matsushita site with that info, but I can't find it. I've gone through four pages of Google searches and haven't found a Mats site that has it. Panasonic Customer Support--or Parts--doesn't find it after a search.
System Profiler says it will write -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. That's great if it does, because +R DLs are much easier to find than -R DLs. But why would PB Guy call it a -R-RW burner/player instead of telling you all the capabilities?
I found one site (CDfreaks.com) that says write speed as follows:
    DVD-R 8 x
    DVD-RW 6 x
    DVD-R DL 4 x
    DVD+R 8 x
    DVD+RW 8 x
    DVD+R DL 4 x
    DVD-RAM 5 x
Note that it give DVD-R DL, which System Profiler does not. And DVD+R DL which PowerBook Guy does not. Does anyone know what the capabilities of this drive are, or where I can find a definitive answer? Thanks for any help you can give. Giles

Okay, for anyone who's interested, here's what I found on a British site called TheBookyard.com.
The Matshita (or Panasonic) UJ-875 slimline (I assume that's what the S means) is a replacement drive for the discontinued UJ-85J, the only difference in the specs being that the newer drive is slightly faster on the DL writing:
    Specifications
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI, Ultra DMA Mode4
    Buffer: Memory 2 MB
    Loading: Method Slot loading
    Dimensions: 5.07” x 5.03” x 0.5”
    Read Speeds: DVD-ROM 8X, CD-ROM 24X
    Write Speeds:DVD-RAM 5x, DVD±R 8X (SL) 6X (DL), DVD-RW 6X, DVD+RW 8X, CD-R 24X, CD-RW 24X
So if it really does all this (haven't had time to test different media) I'm happy. My only question now (except re the error message in a separate post) is: Why does PowerBook Guy call it a DVD-R,-RW?

  • Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E?

Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E? I'm trying to burn a DVD using iDVD on my iBook. The blank DVD's are Memorex 16x (I've used Memorex 8x successfully in the past), the DVD drive is specified above. The finder tells me that the drive has reported an error "sense key=medium error/ sense code=0x73, 0x03" I couldn't find firmware updates in either Panasonic Matshita or Apple websites. Am I forever confined to 8x DVD-R's with this laptop?

    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    First, welcome to the discussions.
Sorry, No Firmware update to allow you to burn at 16X.
The drive you have is only capable of burning at 8X.
You will also find that for the most part when you recieve errors that it is more often than not attributed to MEDIA.
There are so many problems with the cheaper media they are to numerous to cover.
DVD is not at all like CD burning, in that the technology as well as the Optical Drives used, seem to be touchy, and require the use of good Media. This will allow you trouble free burning without errors.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You will also find that the reason that DVD-R Media works the best, is because it is the most wirely used and recognised in both Computers and Players.
If I may suggest. There are several 16X DVD's on the market.
Take your time and look at the back of the Jewel Cases and read. You will see that the better Media will tell you that it will burn at 1X through and including 16X, if your drive is capable of handleing these speeds. I prefer Maxell 16X DVD-R Media in the individual Jewel Cases. This Media burns at the slower speeds on the older Superdrives that will only burn at 1X or 2X.
Like many others I have learned my lessons the hard way.
    Cheers Don

  • Slow burn with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

I have a power book 17 inch and cannot burn either, i get all kinds of window messages, too many to mention. one of the messages i do get sais i have not got the space on my start up disk ( there 2 gig left) but my file of 3.6 gig is on another partition.(with many gigs to spare) what doas my start up disk have to do with this i wonder. if i buy a third party burner its not going to ramble on about my start up disk is it?
Help me please how do i burn a DVD
My drive info says CDR-RW and DVD-RW
are these the disks i have open as options, this info is from the sytstem profiler. can i not use a DVD-R, why not?????
the answer to some of your question is use a DVD- MINUS not +PLUS
As for me help someone. isnt there anyone from apple who can give us some ideas about this.

  • Won't read DVD movies but will read CDs and Data DVDs

Subject says it all. The iBook will read CDs and data DVDs just fine. When a movie DVD is inserted the DVD player will start up just fine but when the play button is pressed a message comes up saying the the disc is not supported. If it's a software problem where can i find the drivers to fix it.

Could it be the Region Codes for playing DVDs have all been used
in that machine, and so the remaining code(s) do not match the
discs you have been trying to play within it?
Or does this problem also occur when attempting to play non-region
non-commercial DVD movie discs in the computer?
If the DVD Player has run out of region codes, there is a way to
hack or change the defaults; but the one I've read about does
require the DVD player firmware to be changed for it to work.
The one I've read about (but have not tried) is named Region X.
There are limitations and details, so even after messing around
it may not work; if that is the problem in the first place.
One of these only works if you play a DVD from a "region-free"
DVD drive; so this may be an external drive, not inside the Mac.
So, if the hardware has a defect, that's one thing. If the drive
has seen too many region player changes, that's another. If
the lens is semi-dirty, it may not read or record some media.
All of these kinds of things have been noted by people online.
Sometimes a search may yield some fringe findings by folks
who've unusual issues with their equipment, if not mainstream.
Perhaps some software such as Region X for Mac may help,
if not, there may be other options if the player isn't defective.

  • How to clean the CD/DVD-Player/burner (MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-875) on my iMac

I have a iMac early 2008, and I wonder how I can clean my CD/DVD - Player/Burner (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875). The Matshita spits out some cd's and some dvd's (not all) even if they are clean and with none damage. Have heard rumours who says that on the CD/DVD player/burner on Macbook Pro you can clean the player/burner with a shammy (wraped around a creditcard)inside the slot. Any suggestions?
The Matshita has been very choosy from the day i bought the iMac, but not as choosy as today. I consider to buy a new externally CD/DVD - player/burner. I have not time to send it in to service (4-6 weeks). But maybe someone out there has a good solution to fix this problem

Hi, yes I kno' the disk drives can be choosy on which make they read & write on.
You could try one ov those disk cleaning
CD's - usually sold @ stores like, Walmart, BestBuy or Target..
An external unit would work well, I'm not sure I agree with your thoughts on the service turn round time.

  • Replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive stopped burning cd's

My replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive has stopped burning cd's in iTunes 10.  The error msg is: "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry".  When attempting to burn files from the finder I got the msg:  "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
Is there any hope for this drive? It hasn't been used very much.

    ust a note of interest.
You don't mention the brand of CD and DVD's you use.
Remember there is a huge difference in the Media you buy and choose.
There is also a big difference in the Software you use to burn with.
There are several schools of thought on th entire subject of burning period.
Apple burners are historiclly very picky, and do not like CHEAP Media.
Here is a good guide to use, it is for DVD but I would use like brands with CD's
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
As I mentioned above the software you use can and does have an affect on your success.

  • T61p XP3 with Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 will not read CDs

Got From IBM Certified Used Equipment back in April, and just noticed I can't read CDs.  Read alot of problems with the UJ-852 and DVDs, but not the problem I'm (my wife) is having.  Machine Type 6457 AK7 with latest BIOS and Controller code.  I have the Extended Warranty, but haven't found the right number to call.  I can replace the hardware myself, and don't want to send Laptop back.
I sounds as if the Mat**bleep**a hardware has had problems for a while, and I should be able to get some help from Lenovo.
How come they put that drive in there in the first place, knowing it had problems... maybe I wouldn't notice... well, my wife noticed and her temperature is rising fast
    Any suggestions??

  • MBP Optical Drive not reading cds or dvds + LaunchDaemons not in Library

    Late 2008 MBP, 4gb, ram 2.66ghz, Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Hey this is my first time using this forum but I'm not computer illiterate so please don't waste my time!
My optical (disk) drive in my Late 2008 MBP is not reading dvds or cds.
I repaired disk permissions to no avail.
I had read another thread on this issue saying I could opene my library to see if i could find and delete  com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. which I had seen had worked for others who had had a 1tb WD external drive and had had their disk drives stop working because of this. However, when I went into my library the LaunchDaemons folder which was supposed to contain this erroneous file LaunchDaemons was not even there! Is LaunchDaemons called something else on Mountain Lion or what? I went through all my plist files and could not locate com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. anywhere! It is my hope that if i can find and delete this file that I may be able to reboot and have a working disk drive again!
    (note)
I could play DVDs but not CDs up until I upgraded to mountain lion 10.8.4, but after the mountian lion upgrade now even DVDs won't work.
Can anybody help me resolve this issue with the Missing LaunchDaemons folder, or have another suggestion beyond repairing disk permissions or deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist.  to make my optical drive work
I am hoping can resolve the main issue at hand which is my optical drive, but also any help on locating LaunchDaemons would be appreciated.
(I know there has been a few threads on this topic, believe me I've practically read them all, for most repairing disk permissions worked, for others who had a wd 1tb external hard drive (like me) deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. worked, but that isn't an option at this moment since i cant even find LaunchDaemons in my Library lol.
    PS.
Please don't be a smartass and say get a new optical drive, I know my MBP is old but I think the problem is not really with the hardware but rather with this absent LaunchDaemons folder.
    Thanks in advance.

Likely not. Your next step is a call to AppleCare or a visit to a repair center.

  • After installing VLC (64bit), my MBP only reads CDs and ejects DVDs. Uninstalling VLC did not fix the problem.  What do I do?

I have recently installed VLC media player (64bit), played a movie file on a DVD+RW for 30 seconds, then decided to stop the movie.  I poped the DVD out, and a minute later I reinserted the same DVD, it was ejected after 10 second.  Now when ever I insert the DVD in my MBP it gets ejected.  It reads my CDs but does not read my DVD. Uninstalling VLC did not fix it.  I am not even sure at this if VLC caused the problem.  What do I do?

Have you rebooted since uninstalling VLC?

  • Satellite M40 does not read from product Recovery DVD

    Hey all.
I have a bit of a problem that I hope someone can help me.
My Satellite M40 notebook fell while it was in the bag and the dvd drive stopped working .
I had it repaired and it plays cds but I can't get the recovery disk to work.
It opens but for some reason the files are unreadable.
When I try to press C after turning it on, the computer sounds like it is about to work but then the windows XP icon just appears.
Can anyone help or offer advice? I'd really appreciate

I just checked my dvd recording device Sonic and it is not there. The read me file and all are there but the actual program I cannot find. So do I need to download that?
The Sonic and other additional tools are placed only on the Additional Software CD which should be delivered together with the M40.
    >How do I know which firmware is compatible or goes with my dvd drive? How can I check?
As already said!!! The firmware could be found on the CD/DVD drive manufacturer site!
I dont know what drive you have bought and I dont know the drive details!

  • Issues with Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J

I have a (pre Intel) 20" screen iMac (PPC) with isight. My OS is 10.5.8. I purchased the computer in 2006 and it came with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J super drive. I used it frequently but not excessively, and 3 years later it quit burning. I took it to an Apple certified repair center  in 2009 and they installed a new one (same type). I have used it  some over the past years and now it is not working. I have read the old articles (301551 and 25402) on optical and disc drive burning and write speeds and have tried all of their suggestions, including different speeds and nothing seems to work. I have tried both TDK and Memorex 80min. 52X discs. Here is what happens: I put in the disc, then go to burn the disc. I see a gray bar that says Preparing Disc...I see the songs above the bar as they load up. Then the bar says "Burning disc- initializing"..candy stripe bar and then gray bar...this seems to go quickly...then I see burning disc - finishing with a solid gray bar..the finishing does not last long and then the disc ejects.
Then I see a message that says" the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry".  What are the problems with this Super Drive?!!!!! Perhaps, I need to get an external burner. I have checked to see what the Apple Store offers and found a LaCie. Do any of you have the LaCie 22xd2DVD+RW with LightScribe external burner? Is it working for you?
Do you have any suggestions for another type of external burner? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR FIXING MY MATSHITA, before I spend a hundred bucks.
