IMacG5 only works laying down????
This has me confused and any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have been running my iMac G5 for about three years on OS X10.3, and haven't had much problems other than an occassional freeze here and there.
Then I made the decision to upgrade to Leopard. I thought it would be great to use all the features and such, so I bought the OS and went through the upgrade.
The upgrade seemed to work ok, but after about a week of running Leopard, my system started behaving really erratically. Freezing up, screen not waking up, several "You must shut down your computer" messages.
I thought, hmmm, better run the Apple Diagnostic disk. Did that, with the long test, and system was given clean bill of health.
Then I thought, maybe I'll upgrade the memory, so I installed 2 Gig of RAM. Booted up, did the diagnostic test again, and all was fine.
Then things got really weird. Every start was difficult and couldn't maintain a stable OS for more than a few minutes of operation.
I decided to do a complete wipe and reinstall of Leopard. Erased the disk, installed Leopard. Still had the problems.
I am not sure when I decided to try this (I think I was just lazy and had opened the back to re-seat the memory and just didn't feel like putting the computer back in an upright position), but I let the system start up while it was lying down on it's back.
Magic! The OS started booting up properly again. I am now running Apple Diagnostic Disk again, this time while the machine is lying down. Before this, I did run the Disk Utility, and did a "verify disk" - at which point it gave several lines of error and said it could not verify.
My question is (while I listen to the airplane engine of the iMac's internal fans drown out all noise in my house), does this point to a Hard Drive error (like the disk is somehow not working in a vertical position and does when in a horizontal) or more some sort of electrical contact on the system board? Everything seems to pass (it's still going now checking the memory) with the diagnostic.
Anybody seen anything like this and have any help?

Thanks Miriam, looks like the segate was able to boot up OSX10.3.6 (installed with original iMacG5 disks) and upgraded to 10.3.9. But now the iMac is extremely erratic in booting up (sometimes it goes light on and blank screen with apple chime, sometimes it will go to the apple image and the rolling timer, but go no further). Probably 1/10 boots results in getting to OSX screen. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMU(?) and reset the memory in their slots, but it just doesn't seem to help. I think I'm going to give up and get another mac - lucky to have the TM backup for restoring to the new one, but kind of disappointed in having a hardware failure kill off this Mac (I've had a couple of macs fail over the years, but this one was unusual because I still couldn't locate the exact problem).

ZTE Open C Accelerometer only works when phone is upside down?
I just received my new ZTE Open C and when I tried a few games, like Sketchbook Squad, for example, I found that the accelerometer control ONLY works if I hold my phone upside down.
Does anyone know if this may be an OS related issue relating to calibration, or maybe it's a defective device?Hi bugninja,

Can you please list *all* the apps that you are having problems with? Please specify which of those apps the accelerometer do not seem to work at all, and which of those apps the accelerometer only works when the phone is upside down. This information will help greatly in investigating this issue.

Why does the keyboard shortcut on the bookmarks ctrl end and ctrl home to go up and down the bookmarks only work "sometimes"
Is the problem on the Bookmarks menu, on the Bookmarks drop-down list (from one of your toolbars), in the Bookmarks sidebar, or in the Library dialog used to organize bookmarks?
Do Home and End (without the Ctrl key) work any better/differently? -
Siri only works when I raise to speak, but when I hole down the hold button and Siri pops up, it doesn't pick up any sound. How do I fix this?

(A) Restart iPad
1. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
2. Drag the slider to turn off iPad.
3. Turn iPad back on, hold down the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears
(B) Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

My Telus wireless only works with WEP, but if I switch to WEP, the wireless on the other computers in the house (which is Windows and WPA) stops working. My computer works with the ethernet cord but I want to be wireless too! Do one of us have to sacrifice our wireless?

I am having major issues with links in keynote! Even though the links (a navigation system) are on the master page, they are only working on some of my slides. Anyone have ideas on how to fix this or similar issues? Help!
I have created a navigation system on the master pages and set the presentation to links only mode. I also have other links scattered throughout the program, like a linkable table of contents, etc. Some of them work, some of them don't. Not sure why. Anyone out there having similar issues? Or have any idea on how I can solve this issue? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!Links should not create any problems in Keynote. If they are set up correctly on text, the text will be underlined. Objects that have links will have a curved arrow bottom right, if you click the arrow a popup will display the link information.
Try this repair for Keynote, ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:

delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application

empty the trash: Finder > Empty Trash

Shut down your Mac, wait 30 seconds, then power on the Mac, immediately after the start chime, hold down the Shift key
When you see the grey Apple symbol and progress indicator (a spinning gear), release the Shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, then hold down the Shift key again as you click Log in.

Let the Mac fully boot up, it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive

when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive then First Aid tab and click repair disc permissions

when complete, restart the Mac normally, Apple menu > Restart

Recently got a new iPhone 5s and the iMessage doesn't work. I tried the sim in another phone and it didn't work either so I put a completely new sim in my iPhone and iMessage doesn't work. It will only work when I use my Apple ID for received messages. I don't know what to do. I have reset everything and it still doesn't work. My software is up to date. Please help!
ACTIVATING FACETIME AND IMESSAGES
Activating Facetime and Imessages on your phone requires the ability to send SMS messages and depending upon where you are that might be an international SMS. Check with your carrier to see if your plan supports sending of international SMS messages. If you are having trouble activating Facetime or Imessages turn them both off on your device and reset the device (Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost)). Wait for the device to restart and wait a minute and turn Facetime and imessage back on and wait for activation. If that does not fix things read the following articles:

After upgrading to Mavericks App store only works for me when I switch over other users
After upgrading to Mavericks, the only options that work for me on App Store are Updates and Purchases, anything else only works if I switch my user either to guest or root? Any idea? Thx in advance.

Back up all data.
Quit the App Store application if it’s running. Wait at least 10 seconds before continuing.
Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.appstore
Caches/com.apple.storeagent
Caches/storeagent
Cookies/com.apple.appstore.cookies
Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.appstore.plist
Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.storeagent.plist
Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
Leave the Library folder open. Try the App Store again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If you still have problems, quit again and wait 10 seconds. Go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist
Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
Test. If the App Store now works, delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, quit again. Put back the files you moved, overwriting the newer ones that may have been created in their place, and post your results. -
Input type="image" only works in Safari, but not IE or Firefox?
Having accidentally discovered a form on a site I am working on was only working in Safari, I've just spent about five hours retracing my steps, before eventually discovering that the code that was making the form fail was my submit code.
The page I was looking at had quite a bit of validation, CAPTCHA code and some jQuery to style some drop downs, so I figured something there was the issue.
But it turned out just to be the submit button.
I've just tried it on my contact page, and its failing in Firefox (Mac) too (and so I assume IE as well.)
Should this work, or is using input type="image" on a form submit button a big no no?
This code works:

Hey – I am having a very strange issue with my external monitor; where it only works if my external speakers are plugged in and connected.
I am using a late 2011 Macbook pro, running Mavericks 10.9.4, along with an MBox 2 (USB Audio Interface), and two powered speakers (KRK Rokit 5). This setup has had no issues. I have just acquired an external monitor (Benq T2200HD), which I am using with a thunderbolt to VGA adaptor (a cheap Chinese knockoff adaptor).
To start - I plugged the monitor in with the thunderbolt adaptor, and it powers up and works fine. However, there is a nasty buzz coming from the speakers. I did some research and it looks like a simple ground loop issue. I did a bit of troubleshooting, and this is where things get weird.
What I found is - If I unplug the MBox, the monitor loses signal from the computer (displaying ‘No Signal Detected!’). Further, if I keep the MBox plugged in, however unplug both the cables from the MBox to the speakers, the monitor loses signal. It doesn’t matter if the speakers are turned off, however they need to be plugged in (or the monitor loses signal). Weirder still, I can unplug the MBox, however the monitor will work if I plug in the speakers through my macs headphone jack.
Simply put, the monitor only works if there is a direct connection between the computer, the speakers, and the power source. What is going on here? Is the monitor grounding through the computer port, to the speakers (I don’t know how this works, is this possible?). Could it somehow be the cheap VGA adaptor I am using?
Some other information:
- Everything is plugged into the same multi-box for power. I have tried plugging things into separate sources, and the result is the same.
- If I unplug the thunderbolt adaptor, then the speaker noise disappears straight away.
- The ground noise doesn’t appear in my headphones, which are plugged into the MBox.
Any information would be great – am I missing something here, or is this genuinely weird?Well, I went back into Best Buy to test on 3 other laptops (2 Asus, and their floor model for this Sony). It seems to be doing the same problem so at least I was able to rule out broken hardware issue on my particular laptop.
Here's what I did to test:
Since I couldn't really install Adobe Premiere on their machines, I used the DVIO software (http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm) and a 5 min clip I captured. I transferred onto their machines, hooked up my Sony D8, and attempted to play the video. It would play for 15 seconds and then stop and jitter with a loud noise (like it does on my laptop). I even tried changing each machine's firewire driver to the legacy one and same results. I pulled a brand new 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable off their shelf and still the same problem.
I think I've nailed it down to Win7x64 bit Home Edition not playing nice with Firewire driver. Very annoying. I can't find any concrete evidence of this from other users on any of the forums that have my particular problem, but from my own testing, it's all I can conclude.
I have 2 other things I can try:
1. Opening the laptop and looking at the firewire to maybe find appropriate driver (ugh, I don't want to have to open this thing up).
2. Upgrading to Win7x64bit Pro and possibly testing with XP on the new MS Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/). I can't do it with my Home edition apparantly.
Who needs to view video on an external TV anyways....sheeesh...(scarcasm).

System only works on first power up after plugging in graphics card
I have a MSI Lightning R7970 that I purchased new however there's an odd problem with it that the internet does not seem to have answers to. Basically my computer only works for the first time after I plug in my graphics card into my motherboard and it works pretty flawlessly (including gaming for hours) until I shut it down or it goes into sleep mode. After that, the computer cannot power up fully but instead only keeps cycling with the fans turning on 1 second and turning off again. This happens all the time and definitely isn't a seating issue because I've gone through this a lot of times already.
If I take the graphics card out and instead rely on the motherboard onboard graphics, this issue doesn't occur at all. I've pulled out every other component in the system and spent multiple afternoons trying to find another cause but I can't find anything wrong. Everything in the system is new.
So should I RMA the graphics card? Or are there other settings I should check?
My config includes i5-4670k, Asus Z87I-Pro, Silverstone ST70F-ES, Crucial Ballistix DDR3 4GBx2.Quote

Why does my Safari Auto-Fill only work part of the time?
First of all, why isn't there a link on the Apple website to provide Feedback? Secondly, I'd love to know why my Safari Auto-Fill only works some of the time, like when entering Sweepstakes information. I realize some websites don't allow Auto-Fill, but on the ones that do, I can't get the second window to open up when I click "Auto-Fill".
Safari 6.1.1 and yes all web forms are checked under Preferences Auto-Fill. I am daily entering sweepstakes for the HGTV dream home, and even though the initial bubble shows up "Auto-Fill your contact information" shows up, when I click on it, the second bubble that lets you confirm the info doesn't always open. I tried it just now in a separate tab, and it opened; then I came back here to write some of the message. Then I went back to try again and it won't open. It drives me crazy. I keep trying with each new data field and sometimes the second bubble will open further down the page.
