Image 292 dpi, will print at 300 dpi

Hello, I'm working on a magazine and we would really like to have a certain photo, but unfortunately it's a bit too small. When placed and resized correctly InDesign tells me that the image is at 292 dpi, it will be printed at 300 dpi. I understand that this could be printer specific, but how do you think the result will be? Will 8 dpi off be noticeable? Of course if possible I will print that specific image. But if not, would you take the risk of having an image at 292 dpi hoping it will be alright?
EDIT: Oh, some info: it's going to be printed on A4, the photo in question will be 213 mm x 88.25 mm at the top of the page.

All image resolution requirements that you may here are generally really guidelines. Assuming you are printing via either a PDF or PostScript workflow, all the images are resampled during the RIP's separation and halftoning process anyway. Don't sweat over the difference between 292dpi and 300dpi (although some under-educated prepress people may claim that the 292dpi is not good enough and refuse to print it.

  • Resizing images through dpi or WxH dimension

I edit pictures but it seems no significant difference between changing dpi or not. In naked eye, it's almost the same!
My question: What is the difference when the image size changes via dpi resolution rather than changing the WxH simply ignoring dpi?
Can anyone explain me which one is best? Thanks in advance.
Note: If I choose first to dpi, it's usually followed by changing the WxH that must be corrected.

Yes if you do not resample not a single pixel is changed.  The number of pixels remain the same as does the File size and image aspect ratio. All that changes is the size of a pixel the resolution the pixel density the dpi.  Pixels have no size till you specify the resolution. 300dpi means that there are 9000 pixel per square inch each is square 1/300"x1/300" when the resolution is 100DPI there are 1000 pixels per inch each is 1/100"x1/100" the 100DPI image is 9 times larger then the 300DPI image it is 3 times wider and 3 times higher.
When you resample an image not a single pixel remains intact.  You wind up with an entirely new image with a different number of pixels so the file size will go up or down depending on the how you resample.  Not a single pixel was made using a lens, sensor and firmware.  If you do not constrain the aspect ratio during the resampling the image will also distort.  When you resample you will always loose some image quality. A print image of the new generated image the number of pixel and resolution may look better close up then the original image still the detail was not captured from the scene. It was generated from some other image by  a computer algorithm. Or the number of pixels may have just been reduced so it will fix on a web page,  Web page image display at the display devices dpi resolution,  The Image dpi is not used for displays are run at a single resolution.   Web image display size depends on the display.  On a high resolution display the image will be smaller then on a low resolution display.

  • Amusing little image size/dpi bug in CS5

Has anyone else discovered PS CS5 applying nearly random dpi settings to newly opened documents?  This is not a destructive bug, as far as I can tell, but when I open "Image Size," PS will sometimes give me a whacko value for dpi (something like 1.2 or 3.4) with appropriately expanded dimensions.  I then reset the dpi to something sane (72, 300, whatever it ought to be), and the image dimensions return to what they ought to be.
No biggee, but I don't like signs of random mischief in my software, and would like to find out if this is a known issue.
I did, incidentally, run "image size" and "dpi" through the PS help forum search engine to see if this has been discussed recently.  Came up with a big "no" both times.  Seems like that's another piece of software that is largely decorative.
    Thanks for any light,

Haven't seen that, but there are bugs in, for example, the JPEG writing software in some cameraphones.
I had one phone that insisted all the photos taken with it were at zero dpi. That caused some problems.
I had a different phone which reported that all photos taken with it were at something like six-million dpi. Closer inspection of the file revealed that it was trying to write some fairly normal dpi, but was getting the byte-order wrong.
If your new images are coming from the same device or application, it might be worth checking the documents in Preview.app, and doing a "Show Inspector" (command-I) on the image and see what Preview thinks about it.

  • HT4505 can you scan 4x6 photos using Image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo. I have to crop the photo once it is scanned

Can you scan multiple 4x6 photos using image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo? I seem to have to crop each photo once it is scanned.

    How long is a string?
The answer depends on a large number of variables
Cropping removes the area cropped off so the pixel size of a cropped photos is smaller than an upcropped one
With iPhoto you can always revert ot the original so if the new quality is not enough for your use you can go back to the uncropped original
    size - many meanings
DPI - simple - Dots Per Inch - the number of dots (pixels) in a dimension divided by the number of inches of the display(print) - very simple math
Pixels and dots are the same for this discussion
so if a photo is shot in a 3:2 ratio (6x4 is also a 3:2 ratio) then the photo is the shape of a 4x6 photo with no cropping - is a photo shot in a 4:3 ratio is cropped to a 4:6 ratio (which is also a 3:2 ratio) then some information is going to be removed - assuming that you set the cropping frame as large as possible in one direction and only crop two sides then you lose the minimum amount of information
Most iPhoto uses of photos are designed aroung 4:3 photos so in general I would only recommend cropping 4:3 photos if you want to print them in standard print sizes
iPhoto slide shows will work best with 4:3 photos so cropping to 4:6 would be a mistake

  • Question regarding the creation of a custom dynamic stamp using "Will Print" from "Set Doc. Actions

    Hi all,
Using Acrobat 9.0 Professional, I have successfully created a dynamic stamp using the forums where I have added Login / Date to my own image and it works great as designed.  However, the problem I am having is that when a document is stamped it becomes flat and doesn't update dynamically which does not work for my requirements.
I need to create a pdf that is stamped by myself so that other users (using only Reader) can open the pdf and when printed the stamp will print with the correct date/time (in the format I describe below).
I found a workaround (outside of a stamp) where I added a text box (called "Today") that updates everytime the document is printed by going to
Advanced / Document Processing / Set Document Actions / Document Will Print
and adding the following Java Code:
    var f = this.getField("Today");
    f.value = util.printd('yyyymmddhMMss', new Date());
This provides me with the unique number that I need for printing  (ie: 20100317102030).  It works great as an inserted text field on my pdf.
My problem is that when I use the "create custom stamp" as in other tutorials by inserting this new text field, it will not update (or display) on print, even though it was set the exact same way as the custom stamp I got working using the Adobe dynamic stamp information.
Can you offer any advice on how I can get this to work as a custom stamp?  I would rather not have to create both a stamp and then overlay the text field manually as I have hundreds of documents (maybe more) to do this for.
Also, as an aside, if I could get this to work, I would also like to add Login ID that updates in the same manner as my custom date format (but one problem at a time I guess! )
Thanks for any and all help that you can provide.  I looked through these forums and elsewhere, but I don't seem to see anyone else with the same problems (with solutions posted).
I really wish Adobe had a Custom Stamp creator as part of their program, with the dynamic option.  It would be so easy for them and save a lot of users so much time.

Stamps are just like a inked rubber stamp, except in Acrobat you can suppress printing them and you can move them. So if you use a dated "Faxed" stamp when you fax a document, even though you can adjust the stamp before affixing the stamp, once the document is stamped the date on the document can not be changed or moved. It appears, that the use of a stamp might not be the best solution.
    "Interactive" means Acrobat JavaScript programing.
With JavaScript not only can you insert variable data but also fixed text strings or a combination of both.
So your script could be updated to something like:
    var f = this.getField("Today");
    f.value = "Printed : " + util.printd('yyyymmddhMMss', new Date());
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1333261#1333261
Getting the 'login name" will require some special JavaScript code being added to an application level JavaScript folder that runs upon initialization and is the data or function created is then accessed  by your PDF. This file will need to be installed on each user's system.

  • Canon MX870 will print wirelessly but will not scan and can't launch EX navigator

My laptop recently crapped out on me the hard drive failed. It's an old Macbook pro vintage with 4gig memory and running OS X maverics. After I got a new hard drive put in and restored my computer using a time machine backup I noticed the Tech had gone ahead and installed a newer operating system 10.9.2 and now I cannot get my Canon pixma MX870's software to work. After going to the Canon site and downloading newer drivers and wrangling with it for three hours I finally was able to get it to print wirelessly somehow, don't ask me how. But it will print wireless however it still will not scan even if I use image capture it sees no printer available and the ex navigator software keeps showing an error message it cannot launch! How bogus! Macs have always just worked period. No problem but now even when I go back to my old install disc for the Canon pixma MX870 it says that the software is not supported by this operating system .....REALLY... this printer is only about three years old! I'm shocked that apple could actually go ahead and make new versions of maverics that don't support printer software from two years ago..... REALLY you're kidding right! Whats next you won't support software from two months ago! I guess we have to just buy a new printer every month.
This machine is starting to remind me of a Windows laptop what a nightmare. Jobs must be rolling in his grave. This is just utterly pathetic. This is the beginning of the end for Apple. I've always been impressed with how easy it is to use apple stuff but this is the second time I've updated my operating system only to find I have to go through **** just to get the freakin' printer to work. Come on guys somebody show me an easy fix here and if any body says it's the printer companies responsibility to update their drivers and software I think I'm going to puke. I have already downloaded the newest Canon software for the MX870 and it can't launch I was able to get the printer to print but can't get the scanner to work and the solutions menu is now useless.

Well you are right Steve my complaint is with Canon for not making it easier to install their necessary updates if you upgrade your OS system but it seems that when Apple is constantly making new upgrades available they might want to add in the heads up "OH by the way, if you install this new OS it's likely your printer won't work any more if it's more than three years old." along side the constant   "Updates are available for your computer" they should really have it read "Updates are available for your computer, proceed at your own risk"  No I'm sorry the whole system is geared towards making people get so frustrated that they eventually give up and buy a new printer. I'm not sure what 5 hours of my time is worth but I am sure that if were getting paid by the hour it would be enough to buy a new Canon comparable to the MX870. So by the way if other people are having this same problem, which of course thousands of them are, the solution is first download the newer driver, then download the new wireless setup assistant and then figure out how to use it (good luck with that), it took me about two hours just to find the access points on the printer and to be honest I just got lucky eventually. Then you must download the newer "Scan Gear" software if you want to scan. But it seems that the new "Scan Gear" software got my whole solutions menu to start working again so there you go, you can be a white night for somebody else who is having this same problem. I must admit that after wrangling for hours I continued to go back to the forums and eventually found a link to the canon software update page provide by some very nice girl who was very helpful for some other guy and the link took me to the same page I had been to several times already but I then downloaded the "Scan Gear" software and was up and running again. So thank you to that nice girl and in the spirit of her helpfulness I offer this to the thousands of other poor bastards that cannot get their MX870 to scan
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mx_s eries/pixma_mx870#DriversAndSoftware
Go there and download the "Scan Gear" software that is for OS 10.9

  • Converting Images to CMYK for Print Publication

When in my workflow should I be converting images to CMYK for print publication?
Currently, I shoot RAW photographs with my DSLR in Adobe RGB, import the images into Photoshop for manipulation and then convert the final, sized image to CMYK before placing it in my Indesign document. Before going to print, I convert my files to PDF using the [PDF/X-1a:2001] preset. I use a calibrated system with a profile set for my monitor.
Since many of my pictures have shades of green, I'm often disappointed with the conversion to CMYK because I lose saturation and brightness. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a better way of preserving the quality of colour in my images when going to a commercial printer?

To see in InDesign what color shifts will occur, use View=>Proof Colors.
I would also recommend View=>Overprint Preview.
Yes there are color shifts when converting RGB to CMYK, but those are due to the fact that the gamut of CMYK is significantly less than AdobeRGB or even sRGB. The same color shifts going to CMYK will occur whether you convert the image in Photoshop or in InDesign during PDF export or at the RIP.
Keeping the color in ICC color managed RGB has the advantage that last minute changes can be made as to what CMYK printing conditions are used, i.e. all CMYK is not the same. Furthermore, if you convert RGB to CMYK early in the workflow, you lose the ability to maintain the color gamut for display of the PDF as well as for printing to high fidelity color devices, i.e., offset or digital (especially inkjet) devices that have extra colorants such as light cyan, light magenta, orange, and/or green to dramatically expand the gamut. Once you lose the gamut in your imagery via conversion to CMYK, you can't go back.

  • Illustrator cannot print a file 47.7mb big but will print it after it is rasterize

Trying to help a user troubleshoot the issue. The user is a designer and prints multiple files. There is this one file that is 47.7mb big and illustrator says it cannot print when trying to print. But when the image is rasterize it will print.
The printer is Konica C454, connected over ethernet (local connection is not possible)
    iMac is running 10.9.4
try printing the file from local drive and over the server still the same issue
I am using the original printer driver from Konica and is up to date.
If you need anymore information please let me know.
NOTE:: I work for an Outsource IT company just trying to solve an issue. I do not know much about Adobe. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    stempmac,
If the printer has or can be furnished with a PostScript (emulation) driver, try to have the user use that. It may solve the issue.
Illy basically dislikes working with non PostScript printers because they may fail to understand what she is trying to show.
You may also have a look at this recent thread.
    Re: low quality printing
Edit: This specification page shows that it has a PostScript driver:
    Specifications - bizhub C554/C454/C364/C284/C224 | KONICA MINOLTA
It should make it work (if going through PDF works and it is not some (other) strange issue).

  • Image in Word doc prints Jaggy

I've inserted my company's logo into a Word document for the header, but every time I print it, it to a PDF, it looks very jaggy.
I have a sample of the logo in various forms: http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/483/jaggy.png
    1. This is how it looks in the word document.
    2. This is how it looks when I print it as a PDF-  I set the PDF printer to Hi Quality and it actually makes the font on the right look better, but the logo (PNG) on the left looks very bad.  The text at the bottom is almost illegible in the PDF.
    3. This is the logo alone printed as a PDF through GIMP.
    4. This is the logo printed on a gradient background through GIMP.
When printing the image to an actual printer, it looks exactly like it does in Word.

png is really not appropriate for a logo, it should be created as a vector graphic so that it will display well no matter what reasonable resolution is chosen. Is the logo available in a better format?

Try power cycling the network devices:
Turn off the printer and computer and unplug the router for 1 minute (do not press any buttons on the router).
Plug the router back in and wait another minute, next turn on the printer and computer and test print again.

  • 135 page pdf will print mainly blank pages

Previously my HP 7410 would print these large documents fine. Now it mainly prints blank pages. It will print 10 pages OK but not any greater number of pages of the document. I am running XP on a Dell desktop with a Linksys router for a laptop. I get the same result whether I print from the desktop or laptop.  Please help.

It could be a memory issue. How much free space do you have on your hard drive? How much RAM does your printer have? What happens if you try to print as image. Have you tried changing your print mode? Some printers have a fine mode and a draft mode.

  • HP Printer that will print on 10 point synthetic paper

    Hello,
I'm looking for a printer that will print on 10 point synthetic paper. This paper is resistant to absorbing water and fading in the sun. (greenhouse application)
Does HP have a printer that will print on paper like this that uses waterproof toner or ink?
    Thank you,
    Sheldon

I don't know of any printers that can handle that size. How does the card stock come?  As individual cards or grouped together in larger sheets that you cut apart or tear apart?
Can your printer successfully grab and move those cards thru it?  If so create the card design in the upper left hand corner of an 8.5 x 11 layout and print to the borderless letter size paper size selection for you printer.  For that you would need a 3rd party image editor that supports layers or Pages, which will do the job nicely.
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    GraphicConverter - $40
    Rainbow Painter - $30
    Imagerie - $38
    Acorn - $50
    Pixelmator - $60
    Seashore - Free
    GIMP for Mac - Free
