Image adjustment question

Hi there,
I am using PS CS3 and am probably an advanced beginner user.
I have an image that is washed out...Overexposed?
I would like to emphasize the two buildings, the tree trunk and the white flowers in front.
Here is my original image:
Steps that I took:
1.  Levels to brighten overall image.
2.  Hue/Saturation of Green to de-emphasise the green (I don't understand this adjustment well).
3.  Dodge tool on sheds tree trunk and blossums (again I don't """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""")
4.  Burn tool on all greenery.
This is what I came up with so far:
I think it's an improvement but might look a little cartoony....
Anyone care to comment?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!
RC

1) Specification for Web Offset Publications. The CMYK "typical" offset press gamut. If you're sending this to print, you'll need to bring the greens within gamut. You can preview by proofing colors to working CMYK (ctrl-y). Ctrl-shift-y will give you a gray overlay of the colors that are too saturated. If all you're doing is printing to and inkjet, I'm sure they're fine.
2) Play around with all the settings. Always better to start with a very low percentage and build layers of adjustment, at least for covering up mistakes.
3) Also try the yellows. You can also adjust the hue range using the sliders circled in red in the pic I've posted below. The dark gray range will be completely affected, while light gray ranges "tail" off to the unaffected white (beyond the beveled sliders). You can fiddle with these. And fiddle you should.
4) You can use burning and dodging, and also blurring and sharpening. Be very conservative with the latter two, but they can help bring focus to an image area. I used a little "creative" sharpening to try and bring out detail, and hopefully more attention to the trunk in my earlier post.
Good luck!

  • Image Adjustment Hue/Saturation questions

I have a picture of a car that I selected, that was originally red, and I am using Image > Adjustment > Hue/Saturation to change its color. The slider shows specific colors beneath it, such as blue, though that is not the color that the car color is changing to.
1.) Is it not changing to that color because I am selecting a blue hue, though after mixing with the red color of the car it becomes a new color?
2.) Is there any reason to feather the selection I made to the car prior to changing its color? Does this affect it at all?
3.) Are there any other tips for making the image appear better when doing something like this?
    Many Thanks!

    Sorry, I am using CS5
1.) I was doing the Hue change previously to the "Master" in the drop-down and it seemed to change the color the same way as it is with the drop-down set to "Reds." What is the difference?
2.) If the 2 points in the middle are the ones that determine which range of colors get affected, what are the outer 2 points determining?
3.) "The first bar shows the colors as they appear originally." Is the first color bar showing a spectrum of all colors in the image? Because there are lots of colors in that bar, and the car I selected is just red, so I would think it would just show red if it was only colors in the selected image.
    Thanks!

I am using a MacBook Pro.  I simply cannot find a way to attach images adjusted in Lightroom as attachments and/or without massive degradation in quality.  I follow the LR attach email process as specified by LR, the photos appear in the email seemingly embedded and the recipients of the email cannot save the attachment.

You are welcome.  Just finished a chat session with an Apple support rep and confirmed the matte option no longer available.  Seems lots has changed since I bought my 17” 19 months back:).  They did say that there were after market screen films available from places like amazon
Have never used anything like that though.  My wife has a 2008 MBP 15” with gloss and I can say it is a nice screen finish, you just have to be careful of lighting from behind you.  All my iMacs were glossy and I did learn to compensate for the added brilliance the screen brought to the photos.  The new soft proofing feature of LR5 seems to better estimate the level of brightness of the printed work, compared to past versions of the s/ware.
In any case, in my opinion you really can’t go wrong with the apple product.  I bought my first iMac in mid 1999 and have never looked back.  I donated that machine to a pre-school in 2008, it was running OSX version 2 or 3 I think.  I did run Photoshop 7.0 on an IBM laptop for a time (windows XP).  I think I had one of the very first versions of Adobe Camera Raw on that machine.  I digress, sorry.
The chat representative did confirm that the 17” is out of production and I’m guessing Apple found the market for the big laptop just wasn’t there.  They did mention that 17” MBP’s show up as “certified refurbished” units from time to time.  Suggest you might explore that option with a local Apple store in the UK, assuming  Apple has store front operations off this continent of course.
Please feel free to contact me with further questions if you wish.
    Take care, Gordy

  • How to add a photo filter image adjustment layer?

In this tutorial at the last step it says to add a photo filter image adjustment layer on the image to give it a warm finish, I can't see any adjustment palette as shown in image.  I use a CS3 Extended.

    Wow, again I stand corrected.
I have a perceptual "blind spot" when it comes to finding textual entries in lists.  It's a "hidden in plain sight" kind of quirk that I normally work around either by being diligent or finding another way (e.g., pressing the button I highlighted above).  I'm sure magicians and people who design camouflage would understand it.
I actually looked in both Photoshop CS5 and CS3 and didn't perceive that entry before I wrote my post above.  I probably looked right at it but didn't sense it was there.  I was even thinking of writing up a bug report.  Now, of course, since you've pointed it out, I go back and look again in my copies of Photoshop and I do see it.  It's a bit of a scary realization, as I have to wonder what else in life I've missed because of this.  I'm reminded mildly of the scene in the old film "The Andromeda Strain" where the lab worker sees a flashing red "NO GROWTH" indicator but doesn't take action on it because of an epileptic block.
Thanks again for setting me straight MTSTUNER.  I continue to learn a lot from you.

  • Image Printing Question

    Hello,
Bottom line summary: How do I use the Media and Quality setting to get a good image?
I have an image printing question for an HP 8600 Office. I am trying to get a decent quality image to print
on regular paper. I gather that I will not get the quality of a photo printer. I gather I'm supposed to use
HP glossy paper. Please read on ...
Images come out grainy (rastery) when embedded from an MSPaint project, and if I use Word. However when I printed just an image from image viewer it came like a photo ... but I can't remember what I did. It definitely is capable of printing better. My cartridges all check out, etc. I did the Print Quality Report ... I sure wish I could get that quality when I print other things.
I tried messing with different settings from the Print - Preference. The Quality (Best, Normal, Draft) doesn't effect the outcome. I tried going into Print - Preference - Media and it makes a difference. I can't figure out which is the best setting for plain paper ... but it's not plain paper. The image rendering algorithm appears to be different for different Media settings. I also tried setting the Advanced Resolution to Maximum DPI. I haven't been totally methodical about this as I was in a rush.
I see that the printer is being "smart", perhaps a little too smart.
    So my question is multipart:
    - Is there documenation on the what the Print - Preference - Media settings do?
    - How do I get it to not use grainy/rastery image method, but use the nicer photo method?
    - Should I print Maximum DPI?
    Thanks,
    - Dave -

Hi @DaveGold , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I hope you had a great holiday!
I see you're looking into photo setup options. I'd like to help!
First I'd recommend this document on Changing Print Settings in Windows 7.  This document should show all the settings you're looking into.
Also, another thing to keep in mind, when you select 'best print quality' and 'photo paper'. It will only be as good as the source image.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Image Adjust icon missing from tool bar

I've got the latest Keynote running on my Macbook, but it seems to be missing the Image Adjust icon, the one that sits right next to Inspector icon on my desktop G5 running the exact same version of the program.
I can get to image adjust through the menu bar going to View>Show Adjust Image, but on my desktop computer, there is an icon right in the Keynote toolbar.
Can't for the life of me determine why it doesn't present itself on my laptop. Any ideas? Many thanks, Bob Krist

Try right clicking on the toolbar and choose Costumize Toolbar (or via the View menu (it should be the last option in the View menu) then you will see a array of icons which can be placed on the toolbar as you see fit.
and maybe the window is to narrow to be able to display the icon and it falls of at the end, there then should be an '>>' icon, which when pressed should show all the icons that dont fit.

  • Can't do any image adjustment after photomerge

    Hello all,
I did manage to do the photomerge under CS4, but why I can't do any image adjustment for the photo?

    That I don’t understand:
I have no idea of how to do by the layer, therefore, I may as well use the Nikon NX2 or Aperture.
In the Layers Panel there’s a pop-up where You can select what type of Adjustment Layer to create or, new in CS4, You can just click the appropriate symbol in the Adjustments Panel (move the cursor over the symbols for their names to be displayed).

  • IPhoto image adjustment tools

Some of the image adjustment icons at bottom of my iPhoto page are no longer there.... for instance the ones I use to adjust saturation and crop and stuff. This seems to have happened after connecting my new Canon Pixma MP990, and uploading scanned images into iPhoto. I do not like Pixma's tools for image adjustment, so how can I get back the iPhoto tools?

Given that we no information about what is going onI'll take a wild guess - quit iPhoto and delete the iPhoto preference file - "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist - and launch iPhoto - reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it

  • Image adjustment HUD observation / implications

    I've just noticed something interesting.
The defaul image adjustment panel (or HUD) does not have the edge sharpening adjustment panel invoked - understood.
However, when I select edge sharpening from the drop down menu - to add the adjustment sliders to my HUD - it invokes edge sharpening on the image where none previously existed, in the amount that the default sliders are already set at. In otherwords, simply adding edge sharpening to my HUD, sharpens the image !
I presume this is also the case for the other non-standard adjustments - although I haven't tested this yet.
Is this by design ? If so, it presumably has implications for those who have configured their HUD plist to include the edge sharpening panel as a default.
    Comments ?

    Aperture 1.5.2
When I add the non-default items to the HUD it also turns them on by default at their default settings. That is how Aperture works by design. It assumes that if you are adding these sliders to the HUD then you must want them turned on.
Tricky. if you have set the plist to include them by default since you will have to remember to de-select sharpening every time you send an image to an agency etc...
Personally I'll take that chance. I would love these items to appear on the HUD by default but don't know how to do that. You mention altering the HUD plist...how is that done? what are the settings?

  • IWeb crashes when I use image adjust

iWeb began consistently crashing when I would try to use the image adjust feature. I had been using it quite a bit before with no problems. I certainly have regained my old OS 9 "save every few minutes" habit. Does anyone have a fix?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder.
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and later the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

    Hi Rex,
Who is your ISP and what addresses do you have set in the DNS section of your System Preferences -> Network preferences?
Have you tried logging into a different user account on your machine to see if that has the same problem? This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)
