Image archiving in a PDF

I'm using Acrobat 9 Standard to create PDFs for a genealogy archive.  I've scanned several large images, eg maps, and saved them temporarily as lossless TIFs.  For example, one map is a 8600x4700 Dot Gain 20% TIF.  I want to incorporate these images into a PDF - or save them as a single-page PDF - for archival purposes.  To preserve all the detail in the image I want to avoid reducing the (resolution) pixel count and avoid compression - or at least use only completely lossless compression.  I'm willing to use any page size and PDF file size necessary to do this.
I tried using Distiller to set the preset at "PDF/A-1b: 2005" then creating a PDF from just the large TIF cited above.  The TIF file was about 40MB and the PDF file was 2.5MB.  There must have been some pixel shrinkage or lossy compression to get that reduction.
How can I achieve my goal of full TIF fidelity when creating a PDF from a TIF?
Perhaps more generally, is there a good reference or manual for creating PDFs for high-resolution archiving?

Some configuration of Acrobat preferences will help.
Edit > Preferences > select Category: "Convert to PDF".
In the center column ("Converting To PDF"), scroll down and select "TIFF".
Click the "Edit Settings" button.
Configure the Compression pane's values.
(You may find these useful - Monochrome to CCITT G4, Grayscale to ZIP, Color to ZIP.)
Configure the Color Management pane's values.
(You may find using a value of "Off" for all may be useful.)
Also -
Open Distiller. Access the settings edit dialog.
Create a job option that has the "Images" "folder" configured in a manner that meets your needs.
You may want to try:
Color Images
--| Downsample: Off
--| Compression: Zip
Grayscale Images
--| Downsample: Off
--| Compression: Zip
Monochrome Images
--| Downsample: Off
--| Compression: CCITT Group 4
  Anti-alias to grey: Off
If you want to use the archival PDF format (PDF/A) and if you've not used it much before then take some time to review what Acrobat Help has to say.
After that, give it a try.
Be well...

  • Remove back image while exporting to PDF (InDesign CS4)??

    Hi All,
I have two images in my InDesign CS4 file and one image is hiding behind my second image. When I am exporting my InDesign file as Pdf and opening in Acrobat, Acrobat showing bottom image first and then showing my top image.
Is there any way to remove my bottom image which is appearing behind in my top image while exporting to Pdf.
I don't want remove manually because it happening with most of my InDesign file.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks
    Baljeet

I would move bottom image to separate layer and then eventually I would switch it off.
If you don't want to change anything in InDesign you can eliminate the second image in your already generated PDF.
Open your PDF in Acrobat Pro.
Advanced -> Print Production -> PDF Optimizer.
You can leave only "Clean Up" check box marked (eventually Transparency if Acrobat will not allow you to switch it off). All the rest leave unchecked.
This operation will remove hidden image.
Correction: It will not remove the image. It just made the PDF to be displayed much more faster that is why the second image appearance was not noticeable. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • How to: add images into an Interactive PDF

I was wondering if it was possible to add images into an interactive PDF once it has been sent to someone. The PDFs are forms that need to be filled by a client via their iPads using Adobe Expert, and they may need to occasionally attach images to the document and be able to edit these images (i.e. circle parts of the image to highlight them) then send these PDF's back to myself.
Is there a way this can be done?
    Thanks

There is no program on the iPad called Adobe Expert. I think you mean Adobe Reader.
Adobe Reader lets you fill in forms but not to attach images. If you wish to make a request of the Adobe Reader product manager, you can post on the Adobe Reader for iOS forum here:

  • Crystal Reports Developer 11 - image quality in exported pdf file

I need to create a report with many images and export it to a pdf file. The image quality in the pdf file is slightly lower than in the rpt file. Can someone tell me how to increase the image quality in pdf file?
    Thanks,

This document explains how to increase the image resolution when exporting:

But it's for Crystal Enterprise 8.0, do you know if Crystal Reports 11 will work the same way?

  • How to imbed image from XPAAJ into PDF livecycle form

We are having a very hard time trying to add an image to a dynamic XML PDF created in livecycle Designer 8. Basically we have a letter document and we are importing data into the PDF as XML. We need to insert an image of the users signature to appear on the form. We have saved the image on a file share and I created an image field in the PDF. How do we get the image into the PDF?? The rest of the XML data is properly inserting into the PDF but the image will not. We are using the XPAAJ API. ANy help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

I'm hoping you have figured this out by now, but in case others are having the same problem there is a section in the livecycle designer 8 regarding how to do this. You can search for "XML schema binding" and an example schema on how to include the image data in the XML you are passing to the PDF (I've been using the XPAAJ library as well) is shown.
Essentially you just need to base64 encode the image data and include a contentType (image/jpg, image/png, etc.) and a transferEncoding (base64) attribute on the element containing the data.

  • Image hot spot in PDF

    Hi all
I am very new to the Livecycle product ...WOW ..it's awesome !
I wonder if someone could please help me ....
I am using Livecycle Designer ES2 latest version and it is sinstalled stand alone on my PC.
    My two problems are :
    1. I would like to add an image into the fillable .pdf I am creating, so I can click anywhere on the image and I could set an action to go to a particular are in the .pdf file or to a url or print.
My questions are as follows :
    Is this possible ?
If so the how do I do it ?
2.As a teacher I let my students fill in the fields in the fillable .pdf file and after making all the selections, they click submit or print.
Is there any way the resultant form can still be fillable because once they have finsihed doing the clicking and filling in the fields I would still like to edit it and then finally save/submit or print it.
    Can it be done ?
If so then how do I do it ?
Really looking forward to a little help :-)
    Thanks a million
    Dean

    Hi Dean,
Here is a sample of the image issue: https://acrobat.com/#d=EGVpC0TT2iHGyNXPUqWmCw
You can create/drag buttons from the Object Library onto the page. Then in the custom appearance you can set the fill and border to the look and feel you want.
In LC Designer, make sure that in the File > Form Properties > Defaults tab, you set 'preserve script changes' to automatic.
Also the object should have a 'normal' or 'name' binding in the Object > Binding palette. It depends on which version of LC Designer you are using.
When deploying forms it is important to consider what your users will open the form with - Acrobat or Reader. Here is a summary of what features are available depending on what the user has and whether the form has been Reader Enabled:
A summary and PDF is here:
    http://assurehsc.ie/blog/index.php/2010/05/using-livecycle-forms-in-acrobat-and-reader/
There are two ways to Reader Enable the form: using Acrobat OR using the full server product LC Reader Extensions ES2. Come back if you need more info.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Display archive doc as pdf from web dynpro?

    Hi All,
We have a situation where we want to display archived pdf's from a web dynpro.  I have put an interactive form ui element on my view and bound this to an attribute of type xstring on the context.
When I run it, i get an error message saying that file does not begin with '%PDF-'.  I've tried putting this on the front of the string but i didn't work either.
So can anyone tell me the process for displaying archived pdf's from a web dynpro.
    Many thanks in advance,

  • OBIEE 10G Embedded Image not displayed on PDF

    Hi
We have some embedded images (source on network share or on the webserver) on a dashboard. On the screen the images are displayed without problems.
But if we want to print the dashboard (f.e. PDF) the images are not printed. In html-view the images would be displayed.
Is there a known bug that images can't be printed on dashboard pages or do we have to embed them different?
    Thank you

    Hi Team,
I do face the same issue of image not displayed in only pdf output format. Our client has deployed OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1 using Weblogic application server and is accesible through a secured url access.
I have followed the fmap syntax to locate the image, also made sure the image is getting accessed through url, tried with different images of different sizes . In all cases the image display is appearing fine in HTML & Excel output. But not getting displayed only for pdf output.
Can you please help me with this regard if am missing any specific setup for pdf output. Is there is any pointers or documentation available to get around this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Showing dynamic images in BI Publisher PDF report

I defined a RTF report layout in BI Publisher. Almost done, but one requirement missing...
I should be able to include a dynamic image (so every "object" on the report has it's own image).
At first I embedded the base64 converted image in the XML output, but then I am running into the 32K limit. (Small pictures render fine).
Although Marc Sewtz sort of promised in June 2008 (!) : "One issue, which we'll address in the next version of Application Express, is the 32k limit on report columns." on his blogpost http://marcsewtz.blogspot.com/2008/06/one-question-about-pdf-printing-feature.html , it still not addressed.
So I tried to embed the image in the report using a trick described on the forum (and BIP documentation), by embedding a dummy picture and set the "Alt-text" of the picture to
    (as an example) : url:{'http://www.oracleimg.com/us/assets/oralogo-small.gif'}.
The strange thing is, that works fine for HTML Output and Excel output, but not for Word and PDF (why it does work for Excel and not for Word is very mysterious....). And of course I need a PDF output.
I also tried to embed a FO snippet:
    <fo:block>
    <fo:external-graphic src="url:{'http://www.oracleimg.com/us/assets/oralogo-small.gif'}" />
    </fo:block>
But that doesn't (seem to) work on any output...
    But
    <fo:block>
    <fo:external-graphic src="D:\Users\rhartman\Documents\PrintScreen Files\Screenshot004.jpg" />
    </fo:block>
does produce the image on the PDF output.
So who has an idea how to solve this issue?? You'll be rewarded with a lot of pionts ;-)
    TIA
    Roel

    Hi Carsten
That was exactly* I was looking for. Maybe I should Google more in German ;-)
The main problem was that I defined my image outside the first repeating group (that doesn't repeat, it's always just one object) - the first group is followed by 7 more.
Just like the "Name" (that's positioned outside the group in the document header), I positioned the image above the table representing the group.
Doing that, the "Name" is filled correctly, the Image only when the Output Format is Excel or HTML - not Word or PDF ... makes no sense but that's tje way it is.
After moving the image inside the group....it works great!
(One more thing...the image size is fixed to the image you use as "dummy". Is there any way to make that more flexible, because now some scaling happens...)???
@Trent: That was the way we initially did it, but when the size of the row exceeds 32K...you know what happens.. And even with a small image the 32K limit is hit easily
The way I use it now (very similar to Carsten's description) there is no limit....
    Thank you all!
    Roel

  • How do I prevent image selection in a pdf file?

I am trying to avoid selection of an image in a PDF file. In my file, it is possible to click and select an image, which gets highlighted in a blue colour. I would like to avoid that, creating a file that seems like this: http://www.dcc.ttu.ee/lap/lap5760/jy992d48301-j_fx.pdf
Note that I am not referring to the encryption or security option, but to an alternative where one can not even select the image by clickling. I am well aware that this will not prevent from copying the image (there is always print-screen, anyway), but I just want to avoid the possibility of selecting the image in any case for an academic article.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

The file you linked to is secured... So if you want your file to behave the same, apply security to it as well.
Another option is to export your file to an image format, and then re-generate a new PDF file from those images. That would "flatten" it in a way that would make the original images not selectable, but I think that's a long way to go just for that small difference.

  • How do I make the images look clear in PDF when converted from MS Word?

    Hi
When I convert an MS Word-2010 file (which  contains  images also) to PDF through Acrobat X Pro, some images which are of bigger size do  not look very clear. Is there any workaround for this problem? Please  reply. It's quite urgent.
    Thanks

In my experience (not necessarily the best), I find it best to rescale image copies with a graphics package before importing into WORD or whatever. Resize and then set the resolution to about 600 dpi before you import. The issue of using the clipboard appears to be an issue with WORD 2007 and such. I clipped a 300 dpi image into my technical word processor and then back to a graphic editor and all was preserved. I did the same with WORD 2007 and everything got messed up and the resultant image looked terrible. In fact, in WORD I got the same result if I imported the picture or clipped it from my graphics package. So it appears there are some strange issues with WORD itself.
I am not trying to make any claims here, but just making an observation. The original image was at 300dpi. WORD also changed the 8-bit B&W photo to a 24-bit photo and reduced the number of pixels from 774 per width to 252 per width about a factor of 3 reduction in pixel resolution when clipped. When I expanded the image size in WORD, then the clip size increased also. When I do the same expansion of the image size in my word processor and then clip back to IrfanView, the original image is retained. My only conclusion is that OFFICE 2007 plays around with graphics and it does not seem to make any difference if you clip the image into WORD or import it, WORD still messes around with it. My guess this is just a general MS thing.
Some folks a year or 2 ago got me to looking at nice sunsets in PPT. There were all sorts of issues with creating the PDF (AA8) from the PPT to get a reasonable result. The image obtained from the MS converter seemed to keep the picture nice. The images obtained from PDF Maker and printing to the Adobe PDF printer gave slightly different results and tended to break the image into smaller parts that often left little lines in the picture if you zoomed in. Folks were blaming this on Acrobat and yet using the same version of Acrobat with OFFICE 2003 the sunset came out great.
This post is a bit jumbled, but the jist is that a lot of the graphics issues with WORD files seem to go back to WORD itself  and possibly with hooks MS put into OFFICE (OK, no proof on that and probably impossible to prove) to mess up Acrobat conversions. It would be interesting to see if the same result for the PDF is obtained from other converters, or if it is just something that OFFICE 2007 does "nicely" for Acrobat.
Sorry for going off the deep end, but I just have a major annoyance with OFFICE starting with 2007, particularly for things like this. They couldn't get equations right either, just one more thing that they messed up. As far as I am concerned, a lot of the issues stem from MS and not Acrobat.
Just for the heck of it, I ran the PPT picture through Open Office and used both the PDF export and the print to the Adobe PDF printer. Both retained the full image. However, when clipping from OOP to Irfanview, the resolution was 96dpi. The result seemed to be dependent on the zoom. So there are definitely some issues with copy and paste, at least with how some packages handle it.

  • Final images in a saved .pdf from Illustrator don't look correct

    Illustrator Newb:
I'm making a design for a new product that comes in 3 different flavors. So I have 1 design, in 3 different colors.
I created all of my different parts for the design in Photoshop CS4 as .pdfs and placed them all in an Illustrator file (except for the text and a few shadows, strokes and such). I'm having problems with 1 of my placed images. It's placed 4 different times, and all 4 are either not showing up or are cropped in odd irregular ways. I have no paths or other hidden parts in the file that would cover them and it only shows up wrong when the Illustrator file is saved as a .pdf.
I went back to the original .psd thinking there was a problem w/ it, and resaved it under a new name and it still saves in AI all broken up.
Because I have 3 different flavors, I've done this in the other files, from that same orignal .psd and they turned out fine. And because this design is confidential I can't post pictures of the error to help describe my problem... The problem started yesterday and we're already behind production schedule.
But any help would be nice. Please and thank you!

    Also:
The first design I made in AI I saved the .ai file under a different name and changed the minor things I needed to make it the other flavor. I can't go back to that original file because I keep getting a Runtime Error when I open it. Not every file has this error, just the original.. THE ONE I REALLY NEED.

  • Image Print problem in PDF Reports

    Hi,
I have imported a JPG image on the layout using Reports builder 6i using File -> Import -> Image. Once imported, this image is displayed correctly in the report layout editor. But, when I run this report (Pdf format) from Oracle Apps, this image is displayed with half side displayed as solid black color and the other half side with the actual picture.
I have tried to change the size of the image, import other type of images (BMP) & tried dynamic image using "Link File" option, but nothing could work.
Appreciate your help on the same.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Yes. I have tried running that report with other images of different formats & size. But nothing worked out till now.
