Image breaking up... why?

i have three layers, as i back away from them, the backmost one shows up fine, but the two that are in front of it break up into horizontal lines (and the back one shows through). anyone know the cause for this?

z-buffer inaccuracy? Try separating the layers more and see if that still causes the break up, this usually happens with surfaces very close together and an inaccurate z buffer in the 3d cards hardware. If this is the case then try setting a Poly offset factor in the appropriate appearance (apperance->polygonAttributes).

Hi All.
Since I have switched from my Mac Mini over to the new Intel Mac Mini 1.66GHz/1GB RAM/100GB HDD, my display shows very frequent strange image and text break-ups. I tried to take a screen picture, but that corrected it. I have been able to take a picture with my digital camera, but I can't post it hers.
Following the advice given by a friend who works with computers, I've reset the PMU, the PRAM. I've tried to change the resolution and now I'm at my wit's end. The image breaks up and all looks like piles of bricks. Highlighting it cleans it up.
I have owned many Macs over the years, currently still have my "old" Mini as well as two Powerbooks (all have driven the monitor flawlessly).
Help, please.

I am not sure about your trouble, but I have experienced some similar issues with my display on my PB. It often happen while scrolling up and down pages after a couple of hours of browsing. What happen to me is few lines of text or images getting jammed up, reproducing themselves, making them unreadable.
Effectively once a new window is over the "bricks effects" it refresh and disapear. I have been battling between repairs, and the tech can't see it because they are not using the comp, but just checking it by time to time.
I have added a shortcut of grab in my tool bar, every time my issue appears I drop everything and open grab and take a picture of the screen, as proof for the techs. The good thing about it is that you have the time and date captured with it.

I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again

Cropping Problem: Image break-up

So far, I am quite impressed with CS6--the more I use it the better it gets. However, I am running into an ongoing issue with cropping. It mainly occurs with stitched panoramas, and happens whether I use RAW, tiffs or jpegs. Once the image is stitched and the layers merged, the crop tool is selected. As soon as any action is initiated, the image breaks up (see below). As soon as I ok the action (by hitting the check box to crop) all is back to normal, but the break-up of the image makes it very difficult to crop accurately. The problem never occurred with CS5. Any ideas? (Note: the image below was stitched from RAW images processed by LR4, saved as a tiff and then re-opened in CS6.)

Printing in mirror image -- not sure why

I had a problem suddenly develop -- I don't know if it's because I hit an unknown key combination or something, but everything I send to my printer from InDesign suddenly starting printing in mirror image. It's not an issue in printing specs from the printer itself, I tried that. The only way I've been able to solve it is to take what I've created on screen and flip it horizontally so it looks completely mirror-imaged, then print it. It comes out correctly then. Any ideas why this is happening?

This is usually a setting in the printer driver, and I don't see anywhere in the ID print dialog itself where you could have set it, so click the Setup button in the dialog to open the printer driver settings. You'll need to find the "advanced" options, and from there look in Document Options > Postscript Options... and find the "mirrored output" setting and turn it off.
Check the printer properties in the printer folder and make sure this isn't set as the default for some reason, too.

The deal breaker, or why I won't upgrade to Nokia ...

Why can't Nokia come up with a really competitive budget smartphone offering? Why can't it give as an all-around decent phone like it used to do in the good old dates?
For the last 2 years, I've been using Nokia 5530. It was a nice budget offering for its time, but the experience was hindered by an abysmally slow CPU and low amount of RAM (which might have been acceptable for a entry-level smartphone in 2009, but to put exactly the same hardware to models 5800 and C6-00 was a crime; it basically killed otherwise capable smartphones). The software also wasn't up-to-par, with a totally tragic attempt at creating a web browser, (somehow improved as of now, but it still can't overcome the hardware limitations, thankfully Opera manages to save the day) obstacles to install new apps (I finally figured out how to sign them myself, but why was Nokia forcing me to do that, making my life harder for apparently no purpose?) and certainly not well thought-out UI.
Now it comes the time for upgrade and it seems Nokia has finally learned its lesson. New budget Nokia 500 runs at whooping 1 GHz, has a vastly improved UI, comes with a GPS with free maps, has a new, significantly better screen and is finally the Nokia phone we've been waiting for for a long, long time...NOT
Because, as it is customary with Nokia lately, someone had to break it.
For quite a few years Nokia phones have been famous for their excellent cameras, so on e would assume e that at least THIS won't ever be a problem. Well, one would assume wrong as Nokia 500 totally neglects this feature. Don't get me wrong, it's a budget offering and I'm not assuming I'd get a N8 style hardware, but even my entry level 5530 more than 2 years ago had an autofocus with a LED flash. The 500 is unmistakably targeted at value conscious high school and college students yet it doesn't have this crucial feature of being able o take a quick photo of their notes, a page in a book or some printed announcement. It's the year 2011 for God's sake, autofocus is not a premium feature, it's a MUST for any (semi-)decent phone. Ho could anyone overlook it?

What are timecode breaks and why do they happen?

I am trying to capture a tape from a Canon GL2, and it has tons of TC breaks. I have read the previous posts on TC breaks and I think I know how to work around them, but I don't quite understand what they are and why they happen. Does it mean the tape is bad? Or did something go wrong when I recorded the footage with the camera? How do I avoid them in the future?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Best practice for this issue comes down the the shooter.
- Get in the habit of always rolling 5 sec. of tape before action starts and 5 seconds of tape after action ends.
- Try not to turn the camera off.
- Try not to do 'searches' on tapes that are being recorded on.
- If the camera is turned off, or you need to search back into the tape, make sure you do NOT roll past the end of the last recorded frame...preferable stop a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and begin recording there.
- If your camera is capable of generating Bars, try to record 10 seconds of bars in between scene or location changes...gives you an identifier and room to roll into already recorded TC.
-if you have to pop the tape out of the camera at any point, follow the above listed practice of cueing up to a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and start recording there to pick up continous timecode.
-try not to use 'free-run' timecode. It will make editing an absolute nightmare.

FCP X unable to scale any still image beyond 400%-why???

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem.
If I try to scale any image in the Inspector window, FCP X doesn't let me scale beyond 400%.
Why does FCP X place this limit? And is there any way it can be bypassed?

Click and hold on the numeric scale value. You will see blue arrows which allow you to exceed 400% eitherr by clicking on the arrow or moving the mouse while you hold the mouse button down. You can also click on the value and type in a new value.

New powershot 320hs - I'm getting the green auto focus bars when shooting a image, but afterwards the display detail shows a white sq with yellow inside square on the image I shot and the second tiny image for AF check tells me it is not sharp. This happens often when shooting and I have to shoot several pictures of the same image before I get a sharp picture. I noticed better results with face detection on but I'm shooting plant images so I don't understand why this is happening? I have had other elphs without this problem.

There are certain limitations on how close to the subject the camera can be and still achieve a focus lock. The yellow square indicates that the camera was unable to focus on the subject.
How close to the subject is the camera when you are focusing on it?

There is a bug report about it not working when tabs are on top. You can use the keyboard shortcut Control+L to go to the address bar.
An alternative is to use the F6 add-on to restore this functionality - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/f6

Web - 500 images max? Why are the flash templates limited to 500?

Is there any reason for limiting the templates to 500? is there a work-around?

On a more serious note, nobody should be subject to waiting while LR processes and uploads over 2000 images. Even on a fast machine that would take some serious time.
I have to wonder if LR is the best application for such large numbers of images. I'd suspect there are better programs out there, ones that don't insist on re-rendering the images every time and re-uploading them all. Dreamweaver comes to mind as an obvious choice.
Should you insist on using LR, possibly consider breaking the images up into galleries. The folks at Theturninggate have some templates that allow you to organize galleries. I haven't used them, so I don't know specifics, but they look like they do some really neat stuff, and they have some automation options to help make it easier.

Missing stars when importing edited images from Bridge - why?

Why do my previously rated images from Bridge appear without the stars after conversion to DNG and importation into Lightroom? I am having to use the "Update DNG Preview and Metadata" under the Metadata menu to see the stars again. I thought with CS3 and Lightroom 1.3 metadata between Bridge and Lightroom automatically shows up?

It works on my system.
(Rated in Bridge Content Tab by clicking on Star Rating on bottom of thumbnail frame.
Went to Lightroom, Import Photos from Disk; chose "Copy photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and import", chose a folder to "Copy to" etc.
The photos appeared in Lightroom with Star Ratings on Thumbnail frames and in the metadata panel.
I used Bridge CS3 V2.1.1.9, Lightroom V1.3.1 on Windows XP Pro SP2.)

Image breaking up

Hi,
I've had trouble lately with image and audio breaking up during my iChats (which start out perfectly fine). I'm on a dsl connection (not Comcast) and speed tests show 2091 down and 270 up. Could the up speed be the problem?

Yes it is confusing but if you set the bandwidth limit to none in iChat you might not make optimal use of the available bandwidth. Just try to set it at a lower speed and see wether it makes a difference.
It will make a difference for other applications that make use of the same connection.
Choose iChat > Preferences, click Video, and choose a speed from the Bandwidth Limit pop-up menu.

Images breaking up on edit

Hi!
Aug 21st-09 purchased new Apple 24 inch. Xfered (Apple store did it) all info. from 3 year old Apple comp. incl. Final Cut Expr. version 1.0.1. Now have various break ups and strobing of images near some quick edits and fast scenes on editing sequences on FCE projects that previously had NONE on my past computer. I reloaded orig. mini-dv ftge. from my my Panasonic camera onto my new computer to replace exact strobing sequences with this exact original footage. But strobing and breaking up of faster images still exist. Apple store has no answer...suggests I bring my Panasonic camera to their store with my original mini material to down load matching scenes on one of their new store computers to match my problem scenes. If these edited scenes do NOT break up on the store's computer, that indicates - they say - MY footage isn't causing the problem, it emanates from my new computer!
I'm also having the same problems editing another project after initially editing it on my same new computer. I'd very much appreciate any comments or suggestions re: this problem. I'm a tad taken aback - after spending 1800 bucks - that Apple doesn't seem to know what the problem is. Certainly I'm not the first one with it...or am I?
Many thanks for any suggestions! I've limited experience or knowledge of electronics. I cannot copy files, download, transfer, repair files and hard drives, etc. Sorry. I use my computer for basic editing and different projects. Help!

I appreciate your response. Thanks! I was told by Apple that my present FC Xpress version 1.0.1 is too old for my new computer amd that I need a newer version. He said it could be upgraded to the newest version. How is this done? Will the Apple store where I bought my computer do this? The cost? Is this something I can purchase myself and get guidance over the phone at Apple to install it? I do NOT have the electronic expertise to install it from written instructions. Also, is the newest FCExp. version so different from my former version that I need to buy a new book...perhaps yours?..to get up to speed as to it's use? Again, thanks tom!
