Image capture, can't scan

I have an epson 2480 scanner that worked with image capture in tiger. After upgrading to Leopard, it seems that I can no longer scan. Image Capture speaks to the scanner (the scanner will scan a preview when I launch image capture), but the scan button is greyed out.
This ***** because I would use image capture to share the scanner with other users in my group. Now, the only way to scan is to sit at the computer that is hooked up to the scanner and scan there using the epson scan software.
If anyone has any ideas as to how to re-enable image capture scanning, I would love to hear it.
On another note, image capture does not work on any local account on the machine, whether admin or standard.
Thanks for any advice...

As far as sharing the scanner using image capture, browse to the scanner (devices > browse devices), then click on the sharing button on the bottom left of the window...You can share the device from there, and add a password if necessary...
Cool when it works!
However, you cannot have more than 1 computer at a time using the scanner, so if another person has image capture open (but isn't using the scanner), you need to make them quit....
Still, this works pretty well (well, at least it did work pretty well
BTW-I thought I had installed the latest driver, but I will try again and see.....

Scanning in Mavericks? I can no longer use the scanning function in my HP Officejet 4500.
HP says to go through Preview, Image Capture, or Print/Scan in System Prefs.
Still doesn't work. Any ideas/similar experiences?

Sure it is, yet it's called HP LaserJet Professional M1210nf MFP Series *
Today, I followed your other advice, and deleted the printer, deleted the /Library/Printer/hp folder, downloaded the entire set of driver, re-installed the printer twice, once with the driver, once with Bonjour.
The Bonjour Printer has the scan option active, but it is doesn't work (refer to above.), it is called M1217nfw
The Apple Driver Printer doesn't show the scan option at all, it is called M1217nf (as on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP list.) This model number doesn't exist, as far as I can tell.
Still, everything works perfectly in Snow Leopard, for a MF printer that has been manufactured years after Snow Leopard was released.
Why going up in software version means going backwards in compatiblity for brand new product is really the question that puzzles me here.

  • Image Capture won't scan to Photoshop

I just downloaded Lion (10.7.2) and everything works fine, except ...
When scanning through Image Capture, it won't open the scanned images in Photoshop (CS4) when set to do so. It will open in any other program I try (Preview, Illustrator, etc ...) but not Photoshop.
When I scan an image with PS set as the "scan to" app, Photoshop will open, but it doesn't open the image.  Instead, Image Capture opens a "scan results" dialog box with the name of the image and a magnifying glass icon that shows me that the image has been saved in my "pictures" folder.  I'm clearly choosing the PS app, and not the PS folder in Image Capture, but for some reason it doesn't know what to do with the image when it gets there. Again, the PS app OPENS, but the image doesn't. It just dumps it in the "pictures" folder.
By all accounts, Photoshop seems to be working properly. I can click on a scanned image and open it with Photoshop manually. Scanned images just won't open in PS automatically through Image Capture like they used to before I upgraded to Lion.
I tried rebooting and repairing permissions just for the heck of it, but those did nothing.  Image Capture has no problem recognizing my scanner (Brother MFC 6490CW) and I made sure to download the latest driver for it.
I'm really at a loss as to why this is occuring.  If anyone has a theory, I'd love to hear it.  Scanning stuff into Photoshop is my job basically, so this is driving me crazy.

I can duplicate that behaviour, best file it as a Bug with Apple if you have a Developer ID ?
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
I will file it also and see what response I get.
BR filed: I note that in testing this if I set the Import To selector to Preview, Mail and iPhoto it behaves as expected so it's possible this is an Adobe issue not an Apple one. Might be worth looking in their support forums to see if anyone elase has this and has found a work-around.

  • Image Capture can't see Epson v700 scanner in Lion:

Never Mind. Fixed It.  I re-installed the scanner software (dated July 2009) and everything is fine now.  I don't know how Drivers from before Lion, and the same version # as I was already using, could fix this... but it did.  Maybe someone in the same boat will find it useful.  The drivers are here :   http://www.epson.co.uk/Store/Scanners/Epson-Perfection-V700-Photo/Drivers-Suppor t?supportLandingPage=true
    Hello
I've recently upgraded my OS X 10.6.8 to Lion... currently at 10.7.4.  I have an Epson v700 scanner, connected via USB, that works with the Epson Scan application and with VueScan.  But Image Capture can't see it.  I installed the ICA driver update from Epson.  I've done the OS X Software Update.  No help so far.
I can't install the Epson v700 in the Print & Scan preferences pane as well because it just seem to "see" any scanners. I had earlier deleted the scanner because an Epson KB article had said to delete the scanner, then do the OS X Software Update, then to re-add the scanner.  But the scanner is not being seen by OS X directly so I can't add it back... though Epson Scan and VueScan seem to be able to scan.  Very odd.
    Any other suggestions?
Yes, I've restarted the system... though I may try it again.
    Thanks...

Canon Australia is hosting a scanner driver for 10.8 and MP Navigator v3.0.5 for your MP180. Install the scanner driver first and then MP Navigator.
Note that Canon is not hosting an ICA driver for this model, which is used by Image Capture and Preview. So this would explain the lack of the scanner entry in the KB article that Clinton has mentioned (the vendors make the drivers - Apple just hosts them).

  • Image Capture won't scan: Canon MP 610

    Hello,
I experience a strange bug in Image Capture which I use together with my Canon MP610. When I put a document on the scanner Image Capture will show a preview and then scan the document. This works fine.
Sometimes I need to make some manual corrections by using the button "show details" and then resize the scan area after the program has analyzed the picture. After I made the corrections I hit the "Scan" button but Image Capture will return with the message "Scanner has reported an error" and "An error occurred during scanning".
I first thought it might be a driver related problem as I recently updated the drivers from the Canon site. Before I installed the Canon drivers and used the OSX drivers all worked fine.
So I removed all drivers from Canon and hoped the Mac would use the old drivers again. That didn't work either as the system couldn't seem to find any usable driver anymore. I reinstalled the Canon drivers and all works well again except for the Image Capture program.
As long as I don't use the "Show Details" button the scanner works just fine. But as soon as I make some manual corrections the scanner error message pops up and the scanner won't scan the adjusted preview.
So I know for sure the Mac sees the scanner and can control it as the scanner does deliver the images to the folder I specify, but I can't do any manual corrections.
I already deleted the file "com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist" but that didn't solve the problem. It appears to be a bug in the program itself or a conflict between the app and the drivers from Canon. How can I revert back to the drivers that my Mac used before I installed the Canon drivers?
    Thanks!

Thanks PAHU that were a lot of drivers for sure in your link and I installed those. Unfortunately, nor the driver package nor the ICA driver did solve my problem. I'm beginning to think it might just be a bug within Image Capture, although Image Capture is stating the scanner is reporting an error. Strange thing is that Image Capture will work fine as long as I hide the details pane.
It seems to be an isolated problem too as I can't find any other subject on this on the net. I see more people having trouble to scan images with Image Capture but that's mostly related to not selecting the right part of the preview. I will see if I can reinstall Image Capture from the OSX dvd.

  • Image capture: begins overview scan on launch

I use Image Capture to scan from my Canon multifunction printer (instead of using the bloated software Canon provides).
When I launch Image Capture, it immediately starts scanning ("overview" scan).  Most of the time I scan, I use the document feeder.
So when Image Capture launches, I have to cancel the scan, then select "document feeder" (instead of the flatbed default), then begin the scan.
Is there a way to get Image Capture to launch without immediately performing a scan (so I can select the specific parameters) I want for the scan I am about to perform?
    Thanks.

They should be in this folder:
    /Library/Image Capture/
(If you’re not sure how to locate a folder from a path, see Locating files from paths.)
I don't know whether there may be other components installed elsewhere.

  • Image Capture can't save to Network Server

I have a Canon MX860 connected via wireless to my network. I'm running 10.6.6 on the mac. When I scan an image, Image Capture only allows to save to the local hard drive. It shows my Network Server (in the Scan To | Other ... dialog box), but it's grayed out, so I can't select it to save to. Is there a way to save to a network drive?

I am having this same problem when I try to upload photos from my camera. To add to the mystery, Image Capture will allow me to import from a camera and save to my NAS using my MacBook Pro, but not with my iMac - even though both are running the latest OS X. Has anyone figured out why this happens? I spent an hour on the phone with Apple tech support and they couldn't figure it out.

  • Image capture won't scan some of "detect separate image"

When put multiple photos on my scanner using "detect separate images, Image Capture recognizes each separate photo, but when it scans, some of the images come out black, and i have to rescan them.

  • Image Capture can't see scanner

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and while the printer function of my Canon MP 180 is working, the scanner is not working now. Image Capture doesn't see the scanner. Following advice on this forum, I deleted the printer in system preferences > print&scan and the reinstalled it a few times. I also downloaded the 2 available (but old) drivers from Canon. Still nothing works. Can anyone help?

  • Image capture no longer scanning in 600dpi :(

    Hi there,
I've been trying to scan some images on my Epson XP-400 (which I usually have no issue with) but today the scanned image file is just all black. The overview scan picks up the image perfectly! But for some reason it's saving as a just a black box.
Is there anyone that can help me with this? It's driving me insane!!
I'll add that I did manage to scan in 400 and 720dpi. So I cannot figure out why the 600 would not be working when it was fine a couple of days ago!
ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thank you

Since downloading Apple OS X 10.4 updates on Aug 4th I am unable to use the compact flash card reader in my HP PSC 2175 AiO printer. After this download I can no longer use the flash card slot on the printer but I can print and scan.
Here are the updates that I ran on Aug 4th:
    2008-08-04 21:38:56 -0400: Installed "iPhoto Update" (7.1.4)
    2008-08-04 21:39:01 -0400: Installed "iLife Support" (8.3)
    2008-08-04 21:39:03 -0400: Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-002" (1.0)
    2008-08-04 21:39:11 -0400: Installed "iWeb Update" (2.0.4)
    2008-08-04 21:39:20 -0400: Installed "iMovie Update" (7.1.4)
    2008-08-04 21:39:44 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (7.7.1)
    2008-08-04 21:41:15 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2008-005 (Intel)" (1.0)
Image Capture says there is no device connected. Image Capture v 3.0.3 (333) modified Aug 4, 2008 21:40.
I used the import capability to bring pictures from my flash card into iPhoto on Sunday August 3rd. It worked flawlessly as it has done since I purchased the printer with built-in card reader. But now I'm SOL.
Filed a bug report but by the looks of this thread upgrading to 10.5 will not fix the problem either.

  • Image Capture can no longer download from iPhone

For some time - I think since Yosemite upgrade, I can no longer download photos from my iPhone 5. (I do not use iCloud, and there are some other issues with iPhoto so I haven't tried.  iTunes can still perform backup.)
Back when, I was using Google Picasa as main tool to download from iOS to MacOS.  For some time, maybe since a certain iOS (8?) update, Picasa would simply begin a download, and spill out an error upon the simplest job - like a single picture.  As such, I went back to Apple's Image Capture and found it still worked.  Until recently, that is.  Now, Image Capture simply starts an "Import", shows a progress bar, but makes no progress whatsoever.  When I retried Picasa, Picasa does the same, i.e., the error message is no more, replaced by a no-progress progress bar.
I usually only perform import when iPhone is filling up.  So this is a devastating problem.  Please help.

    Hello sillyvalley,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with importing photos to your Mac. Now I am not sure what the communication problem is with Picasa, I can say that there are other alternatives to import your photos in, like using iPhoto or Image Capture. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • IPhoto 9.6 and Image Capture can't import from iPhoto, don't recognize devices or SD cards

I'm running the latest version of Yosemite on a recent MacBook Pro, with iPhoto 9.6. I recently noted when trying to import photos from an SD card that iPhoto didn't recognize the SD card automatically, and ask whether I wanted to import my photos. I was able to manually tell iPhoto to import, and find the photos by navigating to the SD card on the desktop and finding the right directories on it, so I figured it was just a hiccup and went on with my life. But now I've hooked up my iPhone 5S via USB to my Mac, and iPhoto neither recognizes that it's connected nor imports photos from it. Image Capture doesn't recognize it, either.
    A few further notes:
    - I'm running iOS 8.1 on the phone.
    - My phone is unlocked when I'm trying to import photos.
    - iTunes 12 can recognize and connect with the phone just fine.
Anyone having similar problems? Is there any help for this issue? Thanks much!

    Hello Nathan,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How do I save an image using image capture after i scan a document?

How do I save an image in image capture, after I've scanned a document?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The process may differ a bit, depending upon which version of the OS you are using. Open the Image Capture application and click on the Help menu for it.
In Mac OS X 10.6.8, I get this:
Control + click on image and choose to "Open Link in New Tab" (or window) in order to see the full-size image.
According to those instructions, it looks as though the scan should be automatically saved to the folder you've chosen.

  • My Image Capture won't scan

Image Capture and software called Paperless were working well until last week when they both stopped scanning. The overview does, but the actual scanning button is grey on both programs. The manufacturer of Paperless says the problem is wth Image Scan. I am using a non-Twain scanner. Anyone know how to fix it?
    j

Sounds like you may not be selecting the area of the overviewed image that you want to scan. This will stop the scan button from being available. With the image previewed, move the mouse to one corner and then drag to the opposite corner to select the section of image you want. Now the Scan button will be available.
Or if you only ever want to scan the entire page, uncheck the "Use Custom Size". This will make the Scan button available without having to select a portion of the overviewed image.

I can't seem to press the 'delete' button or use the delete key in Image Capture. When selecting the images, it remains greyed-out. There is also a 'lock' image next to all the files. How can I delete these?

I had this problem, too. What worked for me was going into Settings > iCloud > Photos on my iPhone, and turning off iCloud Photo Library.
