Image Capture + Rotate per EXIF + iPhoto = Bad

My image intake workflow starts by importing with Graphic Converter, then renaming withi 'A Better Finder Rename' (rename images to a "datedescriptionimage#"), then review and major edits in GC then import into iPhoto.
A recent release bug in GC, however, forced me to use OS X Image Capture. That's bad news with EXIF auto-rotate and iPhoto.
Image Capture has had a bug for several years -- with my Canon camera it duplicates the EXIF orientation tag when it auto-rotates on import. This confuses iPhoto 5.04 -- iPhoto re-rotates portrait images a second time (interestingly the thumb nail is upright) and so the image ends up rotated 180 degrees. I was sure this bug must have been fixed in Tiger. Wrong.
The malrotation is bad enough, but if one includes these double-tagged images in a batch that's mailed, Mail.App hangs until it finally times out with an AppleEvent error. It takes about 15 minutes to time out, during which time one watches the spinning pizza of death.
I fixed my Image Capture mangled images using a Graphic Converter feature that was added a while back on my request. This feature fixes corrupt orientating tags and resets them to the current orientation (so first get the image oriented correctly, then run this).
First I told iPhoto to restore all image to original. Then I did something quite risky (I have backups), I quite iPhoto, deleted the Library root .jpg cache files, then used GC to navigate the images I'd imported in their iPhoto directories. I located all the mangled images, reoriented them, and ran the EXIF repair utility. I then fired up iPhoto. (I tried removing the thumbnails, but iPhoto doesn't regenerate these as one would expect, instead it hangs and eventually shows blank images -- I think this is a cause of the broken thumbnails bug -- iPhoto should just regenerate them.) In cases where the thumbnails were mal-oriented I forced a thumbnail rebuild by editing the image then restoring to Original.
After this fix I was able to mail the images without any trouble.
iPhoto is in such bad shape I wonder if Apple shouldn't do rewrite from the ground up -- maybe an app that would only run in Tiger.

Yes, I understand that (technical) distinction, but Image Capture has worked fine for me with earlier Canon cameras. If this was just support for iPhoto and Aperture it should be labeled as such, but the actual documentation for the 10.5.4 updates says "Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras" and the document describing Raw support says "Mac OS X Leopard provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from the following cameras.
Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.5
Supported by Mac OS X 10.5.4 or later
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi / Kiss Digital x2 / EOS 450D"
The key language here is "system level support" - which I had assumed included importing the raw images. Image capture recognizes the XSi and moves the jpegs just fine - it's not clear to me why raw files would be any different.
Anyway, as others in this thread have mentioned, just using a SDHC card reader works fine - and is faster. You just have to remove the card for the transfer.

  • How to automatically crop images in Image Capture for import into iPhoto?

On my PowerBook G4 / Mac OS X 10.4.2, I'm using the Image Capture 3.0.3 application to capture images coming from scanning photographs with a CanoScan 8400F.
Can I get the Image Capture application to automatically set the crop frame on the overview? Other applications do that, but with Image Capture it seems that after I do the Overview (preview), I have to manually set the crop frame by clicking and dragging, before I can click the Scan button to do the scan?
P.S. It seems that iPhoto does not handle scanning, and you do have to use a different application to scan photos before importing them into iPhoto.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

If you hide the details pane Image Capture will scan immediately to a specified folder. Other way is to open printers and faxing from the system preferences , select the scanning tab of your printer and click Open scanner. It will start scanning immediately without opening Image Capture. To set other software as default you should open Image Capture, select your printer/scanner and click the scanner buttons. It will then let you chose which program should be launched when you scan a document.

  • Image Capture rotation 'snaps' to vertical/horizontal too agressively

Is there a way to tell Image Capture not to "snap" my rotation to 0 so agressively? If I slightly mis-align something I am scanning and need to rotate it by less than 1 degree to straighten it, I can't do that by dragging the rotation handle, because it will automatically "snap" to 0. Instead I have to laboriously type different values into the text box to get the right rotation.
Also, it would be really helpful if you could drag the rotation handle out so you can use a larger mouse movement to indicate a finer rotation.

Well, I'm not looking for anything fancy, just to be able to rotate more freely. I was hoping that maybe holding Option- or Shift- while rotating would allow you to rotate without the 'snap' effect, or to rotate more finely. It's kind of crazy, if I make sure to place items really sloppily on my scanner, I can more easily adjust the rotation than if I try to be somewhat accurate.
Clearly, the program has to go to some effort to create this 'snap' effect; it should allow it to be turned off.

  • OS X LION Issues with Full-Screen; iPhoto, Image Capture & Mail

    Hello,
I'm experiencing un-Apple-like issues (bugs) with Lion in Full-Screen mode.
For example - iPhoto doesn't seem to like Full-Screen mode. If iPhoto is open and I connect a camera, for which I prefer Image Capture to retrieve my pics... Image Capture opens 'behind' the full-screen iPhoto, but I can't get to it. Image Capture shows as open on the menu bar in iPhoto's full-screen mode. If I go to the desktop (where it should be opening) Image Capture isn't 'on top' and clicking it takes me back to iPhoto full-screen
Similarly, if I get mail and return to the desktop (the only way to see the dock) and I click on the 'Mail' app icon - I am catapulted into Image Capture... or iPhoto. Returning to the Desktop to click the Mail icon from the dock... takes me to Image Capture... or iPhoto. The 3rd try takes me to the Mail.app which is usually always open and in full-screen mode.
While I'm complaining about bugs, I'd like to mention that I am fully dismayed by the loss of control in full-screen mode when using apps such as Mail or iPhoto. The Mail app opens an email to edit (such as a reply) but you can't access any other mail docs to 'cut and paste' info from. I can only click SEND or CANCEL.
What if I don't want to CANCEL? I just want to go to another email and cut a piece to paste.. I have to exit full-screen mode which allows me to open two email documents at once, then cut and paste. Essentially Mail in Full-Screen is only a reader... not a work area. I can only access the document I have open, since it greys out the Message Viewer. You can't click on the message viewer nor access any of the features of Mail.app. You can only write your email and either Cancel or Send. Where is the 'hold on a second while I go cut and paste'? I don't want to cancel.
Can't seem to use Safari since I'm constantly three-finger swiping it away. My cursor hovers over a text field and suddenly it's zooming in and locks text input. I have to iPhone-like swipe to expand to exit this inadvertent partial (very slight) zoom. Sometimes the zoom is so partial that I can't figure out what's going on until I just exit full-screen mode, close the window and start over.
Seems like I'm starting over and over and over... just to do simple things. Inadvertent zooming, inadvertent 3-finger returning to Desktop, inadvertent changing apps... ugh.
I'm willing to let go of the old and embrace the new future but so far it's been pretty uncomfortable for me to constantly monitor my overly sensitive trackpad gesturing combined with constant bugs and glitches. I'll save complaining about iPhoto's over-simplification (apparently for dummies) like the new Edit menu, Export menu, etc.. since it's more iLife than Lion related. Rate Lion: 2 out of 5 stars for ease of use & features complicated by unrefined software issues.

I've tried follwoing these instructions but I have an issue with

Shall the new role be allowed to create databases? (y/n) n
Shall the new role be allowed to create more new roles? (y/n) n
It keeps telling me "could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory"
I'm running OSX Mountain Lion, and have verified using serveradmin status postgres that it is up and running.

I'm trying to delete multiple pix in iPhoto that i stupidly made duplicates of without knowing, I've tried going into the applications folder and using image capture but i think I've missed a step , can anyone send the correct info / steps pls thanks

again image capture is not involved with deleting photos from iPhoto in any way ever
the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager is very good for finding duplicates as is Duplicate Annihilator
And I have no idea who told you this - or what it means - but re-read both of my opening statements
I was told I could delete multpiles thru image capture by transferring my iPhoto library etc

  • Image preview not working with 3rd party photo apps in iPhoto/Image Capture

I haven't had a problem until recently with the iPhone 4. Pictures taken with third party photo apps such as Shake It Photo or Hipstamatic no longer generate a thumbnail preview in either iPhoto or Image Capture. It's just a generic jpg icon. All pictures taken with Apple's camera app appear just fine. I also had a problem where I couldn't import any of the photos, but I restarted the phone a couple times and that seemed to fix the importing issue, but not the thumbnail preview issue. This is particularly weird because i've been importing pictures since the first day this phone came out, and it's only been doing this since yesterday.
I know a lot of people are having problems getting their iPhoto to recognize the phone at all or that there are photos on the phone, but is anyone else having the same problem as me? Any solutions? I have iPhoto 8.1.2.
    Thanks!

I'll subscribe to this tread to see if anyone comes up with a fix.

  • Aperture not reading EXIF Image Capture time properly

    Hi
I have recently imported a folder of Raw/JPEG files into Aperture as a new project.  They previously had been managed in Media Pro.  When I sorted the images by date, I found that some (but not all) Raw files didn't have the image capture time recognised.  I.e. the image date time was shown as 'Date X time 00:00:00'.  These are Olympus ORF files (from the E-M5 and XZ-1.  The JPEG files are properly date-stamped.
I have tried to alter the image date/time as per the Metadata menu command.  However, although looks like it is doing the job, when next I open the library there is no change to the information and the image is still sorted in the wrong place if I sort by image date.
The wierd thing is that the capture time is correctly shown in the image EXIF (I can see it in EXIF Editor, Olympus Viewer and in Media Pro), but that it isn't being seen by Aperture or OS X properly.  Something somewhere has obviously got muddled.  Any ideas on how this can be sorted out?  It has been driving me mad trying to sort this out!
    Andrew

Here is another example of this effect, but with a different type of subject matter: a ball. The original is a raw file from a Canon 350D/Digital Rebel.
In Aperture's Zoom mode there is a pattern on the ball that looks like Maze Craze:
The pattern is maintained to a lesser degree as the image is sized down:
    Exported as Original Size png:
    Exported as Half Size png:
Now, as pointed out in the earlier post, the real problem is that other apps do not have this problem. The following is from ACR:
Aside from the pattern, Aperture does look better, but the pattern is nasty and almost makes the image unusable.

  • Iphone/ipad video glitches after upload thru iphoto/image capture...suggestions??

iphone/ipad video glitches after upload thru iphoto/image capture...suggestions??

If the problem only appears with iPhoto then it may be due to a bad pref file for iPhoto. It could also be caused by a bad cache or log file.
There are additional ImageCapture preference files located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Be sure to remove them also. Also remove the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto/ folder.
There are two ImageCapture cache files located in the /Library/Caches/ folder. Drag them to the Trash but do not delete them as yet.
Now restart the computer and see what happens.

  • Since upgrade to Iphone ios6 (4S), I can not import any videos to iPhoto or Image Capture

Hi there. I have had numberous problems with my upgrade to IOS6, particularly with the Camera/Photos. Two big ones: The camera does not orient itself properly when taking horizontal photos. You take a horizontal photo and it never rotates properly. So I have to go into Photo Shop and rotate each one manually. Sometimes it does not recognize horizontal from vertial when taking as well.
Also, I can not download ANY videos to iphoto or via Image Capture. The error I get for every video (both new videos shot after upgrade and those that date back to before the upgrade): Import Error An error occured while importing. The item ZZZZ.MOV was not imported.
I have all my software updates on both my phone and computer.
    Any suggestions?

I would try restarting you Mac if you haven't already.  If you still can't get either iPhoto or Image Capture to work, you could try something else, like PhotoSync or PhoneView.

  • Advantages, pros and cons, using "Image Capture" versus iPhoto?

Senior Citizen's first attempt to use mini SD Card (fr. cell phone) to transfer picts. to my Mac Mini, OS X Maverick 10.9.  Plus, I just got my first digital camera.
Ergo the Ques.: What are the Pros & Cons between these to apps.?  Points of concern: 1.) Privacy: Don't want picts. accdentally uploaded anywhere in case I click the wrong button.  2.)  Easist to learn, easiest to use, no graphic designer here, starting out with the basics- crop, sharpen, rotate -then on wards & upwards.  3.) Portability & end uses & users (viewers) compatibilities. Of great import of course export & import.
Been with my cell phone carrier 15 yrs. on Nokias now I can get an iPhone.  Lot of dificulties hooking Nokia to Mac, Isync no longer supported (blu tooth) connection, screwing up contacts etc.  Can't hook up directly, lost cord.  Some already transfered when everything was working; I believe that was back in OS X 10.8.4, not sure.
None the less I want to start utilizing the One of these Apps on board.  Know I have to learn them my self.  Just another Late in Life learning prob., #%*)#!
         Kowledgeable input & pointers appreciated,
         Thank you,

As thomas_r points out, Image Capture just transfers the photos from a Camera (or card) to your Mac into a folder somewhere on your Mac.
iPhoto provides all the organization, editing, and sharing features. iPhoto is easy to use, offering one-click editing for many of the common photo editing needs.
You generally won't be able to one-click and post them someplace you don't want. There will be at least one dialog box stopping to ask directions before it goes where you were trying to send it.
While it doesn't post them publicly (unless you go in and change settings), the iPhone has a capability to put all the pictures you've take into your iCloud account so they are immediately avaliable on other iCloud connected devices.
As stated, it doesn't put them in a public place, but it does move them onto Apple's servers. You can turn that feature off in the phone's settings.

  • IPhone 3G's camera roll empty on Image Capture (and iPhoto)

I have 11 photos on the iPhone. I have loaded them to MobileMe, but they are scaled down with no EXIF data. The iPhone loads fine in iTunes, and the device can be seen by Image Capture and iPhoto. These apps just can't see the Camera Roll with the 11 photos. I have tried resetting everything but nothing works.
    Anyone got any ideas?

The sync DOES NOT copy off pictures for you (yes it is part of backup file though, but not image files you can touch).
iTunes CAN sync pictures TO the phone but not to Camera Roll.
The Camera Roll is a special partition on the phone that when connected to a computer acts like *any other* digital camera. Thus to take pictures off the camera roll, you use what ever software you use to take off pictures of any of your digital cameras (as for Windows, it has the default Camera/Scanner wizard that it will normally offer up unless you told it to stop suggesting it).
So once connected, no sync is needed. But your PC (unless you changed default settings in Windows as it has nothing to do with iTunes) will prompt you about a camera being attached and what do you want it to do.
Even if it doesn't ask, it should show up under My Computer and you can just browse to it and copy the images off.

  • HELP! I lost my photos between image capture and iPhoto

I move photos from my iPhone to iPhoto with image capture. image capture is set to delete the photos after importing them. I just imported some important photos and after image capture deleted them from my phone I saw a message from iPhoto that there was a problem writing to my library and that the images were not imported. Now they are not in iPhoto and not on my iPhone! Where are they? can I get them back? are they gone for good?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's the one primary reason iPhoto should never be setup to delete the photos after import. Too many incomplete or bad imports and complete deletions. Always have the phone do the deletions.
You would have to ask in the iPhone forum for any way to recover deleted photos. If the iPhone can be viewed on the Desktop as an external HD like some cameras you might be able to use a file recovery application designed for memory cards like MediaRECOVER. They probably will have a better idea in the iPhone forum.

  • How do I find lost photos after Image Capture failed to import them to iPhoto?

im having this problem exactly .... http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20101215095521610
i chose to delete after import, like a wise guy, thinking nothing was going to happen and now my photos are not in my iPhoto libary... ive gone through all my images and i cant find them...
i used image capture to put all my photos into iphoto from my iphone 4 before i bought my 4S and i didnt back anything up, thinking i was fine...
when i went to iphoto they werent there, so i tried to quit iphoto and, as i did, it said my library was updating about 300+ photos, so i was like 'oh all i needed to do was restart iphoto'... but it was still a no-go, they still werent there...
i restarted my computer, looked at other peoples answers, and i just cant find them in any folder or anywhere....... and i cant find the folder from the link i posted... very tired and fustrated. i need help please : (

    I don't think it can be done from within iPhoto but there's a way you can do it from outside. First download and launch QPict. Then do the following;
1 - open your iPhoto Library folder and type Command-F.
2 - in the search window create these two search criteria:
    a - Kind is Folder
    b - Name contains Original
3 - In the search results window click on the size column to separate the empty folders from those with files in them.
4 - select all of the folder that are not empty and drag into the open window of QPict.
That will open the original files in QPict so you can view them there and compare to those in iPhoto. Just remember do not move any of those folders out of the iPhoto Library folder. Just move them into the open window of QPict.
