Image Capture won't recognise scanner

Until recently (10.6.5?) I have used Image Capture very successfully to scan with a Canon MP610 multifunction printer, preferring its no nonsense simplicity to the Canon software (MP Navigator EX).  But opening Image Capture to initiate a scan now results in an interminable delay before the printer shows up in the Devices pane on the left of the window while the message "No camera or scanner connected" is displayed in the centre pane. The delay is usually several minutes, sometimes longer and then I give up and go back to MP Navigator.
I have tried remedies suggested in other forums (deleting and re-adding the printer, resetting the printing system, changing the USB port and prayer) but to no avail. My research suggests that this issue also occurs with other brands of printer.   I thought that the 10.6.7 update might have sorted it but it didn't.  Does anyone have any other suggestions so that I can resume digitising 30 years worth of photos?

I would look for apps that would use the USB port, such as other imaging applications for cameras. If you check Activity Monitor you can also see what background services are running - could be something here that sticks out, especially if it is from another printer/camera vendor or even another Canon application for that matter.
Checked the USB port situation - only the printer is using one.  To my relatively untutored eye, nothing sticks out from Activity Monitor.  I plug in a Canon camera quite often but it's not connected right now.
Another thing you can try is creating another account and then logging in with this account. If this other account works okay then you can look at some service starting just for your main account. This could be found in Accounts > Login Items or Home folder > Library > LaunchAgents.
Created a Test account and logged into it (goodness me, how my normal admin account has changed!) but the problem still remains.  The LaunchAgents folder contained a file named com.macupdate.desktop5.scanner.plist and I immediately thought this is it but, no, trashing it made no difference.   Login items are

which will give you some idea of how my mind works but probably little else.  Many thanks for your suggestions...

  • Image Capture won't scan: Canon MP 610

    Hello,
I experience a strange bug in Image Capture which I use together with my Canon MP610. When I put a document on the scanner Image Capture will show a preview and then scan the document. This works fine.
Sometimes I need to make some manual corrections by using the button "show details" and then resize the scan area after the program has analyzed the picture. After I made the corrections I hit the "Scan" button but Image Capture will return with the message "Scanner has reported an error" and "An error occurred during scanning".
I first thought it might be a driver related problem as I recently updated the drivers from the Canon site. Before I installed the Canon drivers and used the OSX drivers all worked fine.
So I removed all drivers from Canon and hoped the Mac would use the old drivers again. That didn't work either as the system couldn't seem to find any usable driver anymore. I reinstalled the Canon drivers and all works well again except for the Image Capture program.
As long as I don't use the "Show Details" button the scanner works just fine. But as soon as I make some manual corrections the scanner error message pops up and the scanner won't scan the adjusted preview.
So I know for sure the Mac sees the scanner and can control it as the scanner does deliver the images to the folder I specify, but I can't do any manual corrections.
I already deleted the file "com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist" but that didn't solve the problem. It appears to be a bug in the program itself or a conflict between the app and the drivers from Canon. How can I revert back to the drivers that my Mac used before I installed the Canon drivers?
    Thanks!

Thanks PAHU that were a lot of drivers for sure in your link and I installed those. Unfortunately, nor the driver package nor the ICA driver did solve my problem. I'm beginning to think it might just be a bug within Image Capture, although Image Capture is stating the scanner is reporting an error. Strange thing is that Image Capture will work fine as long as I hide the details pane.
It seems to be an isolated problem too as I can't find any other subject on this on the net. I see more people having trouble to scan images with Image Capture but that's mostly related to not selecting the right part of the preview. I will see if I can reinstall Image Capture from the OSX dvd.

  • Image Capture won't capture (Canon 9950F)

I have recently bought a Canon 9950F for a specific project. It replaced an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo which worked perfectly but was limited in the size (area) of its film scanning capabilities. I have used a range of software including VueScan and Silverfast v6.6 but the most direct scanning tool I have used is Image Capture. The feature that I really like with Image Capture is the ability to select multiple scan areas in the 'preview' and have Image Capture scan them as a batch. The project I am working on (family archive photos, documents and film negs of various formats) really makes the most of this feature.
I have moved over to the Canon 9950F and immediately noticed that Image Capture does not see the film scanning feature of the 9950F. It scans documents exactly as the Epson 2450 did but does not offer the option of scanning film or transparency, only documents on the flatbed. I have updated the Canon Drivers and the scanner is visible under System Prefs > Printers. VueScan and SilverFast recognise the scanner (but neither have the selectable scanning feature that Image Capture offers) and Photoshop Elements 10 also sees the scanner under File > Import.
Has anyone experienced this problem and, if so, is there a 'work around'.
    Many thanks.

  • Image capture won't recognize my ScanSnap iX500.  How do I make them work together?

Image capture won't recognize my ScanSnap iX500.  How do I make them work together?

To use Image Capture you need an ICA driver for your scanner. Checking the Fujitsu web site for drivers for the iX500 I only see a ScanSnap manager for OS X. No mention of an ICA driver. So you may need to contact your local Fujitsu support.

    Hi G-Man,
It's probably something in the Preferences folder; Users/herusername/Library/Preferences. Start by removing com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist and trying again. If that doesn't do it drag the entire Preference folder to the desktop, log out and back in. Launch it again and if it works you can either reset preferences for all System Preferences and apps or drag the preferences files a group at a time back to the new Preference folder in Library and test Image Capture each time. That way you can narrow it down to the one offending preference file.

    Might be corrupted preferences (.plist)
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.image_Capture.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.image_Capture.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac and your scanner and try scanning an image.

  • Image capture won't scan some of "detect separate image"

When put multiple photos on my scanner using "detect separate images, Image Capture recognizes each separate photo, but when it scans, some of the images come out black, and i have to rescan them.
    Any ideas?

  • Image Capture does not recognize scanner with latest update of Mavericks 10.9.4

Since last week (8-5-14) after updating to OS 10.9.4 (13E28) Image Capture and Printers and Scanner (in System Prefs.) do not recognize my scanner. What the hay! Yes, my scanner is elderly but like me is in perfect working condition. Until now. I've spent hours trouble shooting, i. e., downloading EPSONPrintDriver2.18.dmg and reinstalling, a waste of time. Changing usb/firewire cables, switching usb ports, deleting pref files and cussing. The Epson web site was useless it just tells me to download updates via Apple software updates. I hate the idea of being so dammed dependant on any one organization (Apple). I've been an Apple user since the Apple 2C but I do believe that will change soon.
Anyone with a solution or replacement app for Image Capture? I don't want to spend my Social Security money on VueScan which dose work for me unless I have to.

Try resetting the printing system. It can also affect the scanner.

  • Mountain Lion Image Capture won't recognize my Canon MP600 Scanner

I'm not sure when it happened as I don't use my scanner all that much but at some point in the last month or so Image Capture can'is no longer able to see my scanner. It's a multi function Canon MP600 printer/scanner. I can still print but no go on scanning. I checked out the Canon site for drivers/updates but there are none. System Report sees the MP600 and like I said, I can print just not scan. I'm running 10.8.2.
Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.
    Joe

This might have been my fix, too. I did as this instructed; however, after installing v.2.11 from Apple's site and deleting the printer, then adding it back again (I also unplugged and replugged the printer), nothing changed.
I then did as "noseyp" below suggested and at the Canon site added the scanner driver for Mac OS 10.7. That process (after I bypassed my security roadblock), required a computer restart.
So was is it v.2.11 installation (plus the restart) that made the difference? Or was it the 10.7 scanner driver? I won't know.
I'd suggest to anyone to do as "legendarybc" suggested, but then do restart your computer. If that doesn't work, then add the 10.7 scanner driver from:

  • Image Capture won't scan to Photoshop

I just downloaded Lion (10.7.2) and everything works fine, except ...
When scanning through Image Capture, it won't open the scanned images in Photoshop (CS4) when set to do so. It will open in any other program I try (Preview, Illustrator, etc ...) but not Photoshop.
When I scan an image with PS set as the "scan to" app, Photoshop will open, but it doesn't open the image.  Instead, Image Capture opens a "scan results" dialog box with the name of the image and a magnifying glass icon that shows me that the image has been saved in my "pictures" folder.  I'm clearly choosing the PS app, and not the PS folder in Image Capture, but for some reason it doesn't know what to do with the image when it gets there. Again, the PS app OPENS, but the image doesn't. It just dumps it in the "pictures" folder.
By all accounts, Photoshop seems to be working properly. I can click on a scanned image and open it with Photoshop manually. Scanned images just won't open in PS automatically through Image Capture like they used to before I upgraded to Lion.
I tried rebooting and repairing permissions just for the heck of it, but those did nothing.  Image Capture has no problem recognizing my scanner (Brother MFC 6490CW) and I made sure to download the latest driver for it.
I'm really at a loss as to why this is occuring.  If anyone has a theory, I'd love to hear it.  Scanning stuff into Photoshop is my job basically, so this is driving me crazy.

I can duplicate that behaviour, best file it as a Bug with Apple if you have a Developer ID ?
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
I will file it also and see what response I get.
BR filed: I note that in testing this if I set the Import To selector to Preview, Mail and iPhoto it behaves as expected so it's possible this is an Adobe issue not an Apple one. Might be worth looking in their support forums to see if anyone elase has this and has found a work-around.

  • Image capture won't recognize Canoscan lide 700f

Hello.  I have OS X, v. 10.6.7   I have been using Image Capture to run the Canoscan lide 700f scanner.  Then, it stopped recognizing the scanner.   Image capture is opened and says "no camera or scanner attached."  The scanner is operational.  The MAC sees the printer in systems preferences > hardware > print and fax. Any ideas on what I can do to get this scanner recognized by Image Capture again?  Thanks for your help.

I had the problem with the same scanner and Lion.  When the Mac would go to sleep, Image Capture would not recognize the scanner after it woke up.  Had to unplug and replug the USB connector to get it to start correctly.  I was blaming it on the scanner driver, but I accidently discovered that if I opened Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, all of a sudden the scanner would respond to an attempt to import from the scanner (to Elements).  After that, Image Capture could talk to it just fine.  So it appears that it is an Image Capture problem and not an issue with the Cannon driver.

  • Image capture will not recognise my iPhone?

Image Capture on my iMac with Snow Leopard, does not recognise my iPhone when I attach it. I  have tried the same phone with a MacBook Pro without a problem. The Image Capture software is the same version on both computers. Can anyone help?

  • Image Capture won't import iPhone pics

Is anyone else experiencing an issue where Image Capture sees the iPhone photos, but when you click "download all" it cycles through the photos really fast and doesn't download anything? The only "fix" I've been able to figure out is a computer restart, but it's annoying to have to restart when you just want to download a few pictures. My phone is an iPhone 3GS running the 4.2.1. I've had the problem since buying this phone last year.

Bizarrely that has just happened to me today for the first time! For me comes after installing a Canon scanner driver which Image Capture keeps thinking is there even when it is disconnected.

  • Image Capture won't straighten crooked APS 25mm Prints.

I'd like to scan in my old prints with Image Capture, but the
edge-detect and straightening only happens when the image is a
standard 35mm print (it works fine then).
Remember the old APS 25mm film format? I've got a
ton of prints from that format (which are wider than 35mm prints), but Image Capture refuses to detect
the edge of these to correct any crookedness.
Any idea how I can get it to automatically recognize the edges and
    straighten the capture window accordingly??

I could always draw a box around each photo (using the Overview Scan) and then scan it, but I'm looking to use the feature of Image Capture to do that for me automatically (to speed up the process).
Did you think that the edges of the actual prints weren't straight? That's not the case. I'd just like the ability to throw a few pics on the scanner, press a button and let Image Capture straighten out any pictures that weren't perfectly square with the sides of the scanner bed (I've got too many photo prints to scan to do otherwise). Image Capture can do that with 35mm prints, apparently, but it can't seem to handle the odd (rectangular) size of the old APS prints. I've tried it with an APS print and a 35mm print at the same time, and it located and straightened the 35mm print but not the APS size.

  • Image Capture won't allow us to save...

When we go to Applications > Image Capture it automatically turns on our scanner and scans in the image or document, HOWEVER, the scan button in the program is always grayed out, so we can't save the image/document anywhere. What are we doing wrong?
We tried to find some documentation on the 'Image Capture' program but we couldn't find any, not even from Apple Can anyone help us sort this issue out?

It's waiting for you to tell it what it should scan. Sounds silly but it's true.
Click and drag in the Preview window do drag out a box for it to scan inside of and the Scan button will un-grey.
