Image darkening ..

-
hello
I'm trying to figure, just which would be the best place - i.e. sub-forum, to ask a question about, .. perhaps what application to utilize, .. to do some basic (only very) .. image "darkening".
- In the case that either, this question might perhaps be able to be answered - here, more immediately, with its more general appreciation, .. or either - perhaps, that a slightly more detailed version of it might help in directing me to where it might be, ....
.. here following is the a link to the main type of image that I would be hoping to "darken".

.. Appreciate your time.

Richard ~ One option is this free, easy-to-use, web-based image editor (note: all the thumbnails below are clickable)...
After uploading your image to Picnik, under the Edit tab, I clicked the Exposure button and adjusted the Exposure slider:
By the way, increasing the Contrast slider would make the clouds more visible.
On a related note, you may also be interested in this free app:
...which puts a live image on your Desktop:
I set OSXplanet to update every 30 minutes so that the rendering of day & night is realistic. Clouds update every 3 hours, but from OSXplanet's icon in the menu bar > Visuals Update, you can trigger the update at any time.
It took some experimentation to get that particular view and I eventually settled with these Preference settings in the "General" tab — just set the city you want to be centered on:

  • Qosmio X300-13R - After few seconds the image darkens on webcam

We have laptop Toshiba Qosmio-X300-13R with the chamber built in webcamera. But there is a question.
I start the native utility or Skype, the first seconds all is visible, and then the image darkens and looks narrowly in the monitor that like it is visible my silhouette. If I apply different options, it does not occur. It is necessary to press the button to apply, the chamber again for 5-10 seconds shows brightly and is light. And then again on 95 % darkness... Deleted native driver, Windows Vista puts built in, and in Skype that does not vary. And with native drivers, in the utility (Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba) and in Skype.
What is such and how it to win?
P.S. On how many I have understood, the built in chamber of firm Chicony.

    I had the same problem. . . fortunately I have a solution =)
After you've opened your webcam application like yahoo webcam and the screen goes black, what I do is I open the Toshiba camera assistant software utility and click properties
From there click backlit compensation and night mode. The screen would black out again after an hour or so, when that happens repeat the process, if the night mode is already checked, uncheck, and then check again then click ok when the screen comes to.
    Hope this helps.

  • Image darkening on export

Since upgrading to Aperture 3.1.2 and Mac OS 10.6.7 I have noticed that when I export an image to my external editor (Pixelmator) or my plug-in (Silver Efex Pro 2) the image opens in the programme considerably darker than in Aperture. I correct this in the programmes but when the image is brought back into Aperture it is then too light. The darkening also occurs when I export a version and open it in Preview.
I have not seen any similar comments on this forum, so I wonder whether this is a bug or some problem with my own settings? My export preferences in Aperture are Tiff 16-bit, 300 dpi, and external editor color space is eciRGB v2.

I've tried onscreen proofing and using different colour profiles, however the results are still the same. When I export an image it opens in the receiving program very dark, underexposed even. In Silver Efex Pro, for example, if I save this very dark image the black and white image will open in Aperture with the same exposure as the original colour image. If I work on the image in SEP and increase brightness etc and then save it opens up in Aperture much lighter than the original image. As a workround I have found that I can drop the brightness control in the Aperture adjustment pane to -0.40 and get a match with the original image.
As I wrote in my original post I get the same effect when exporting to Pixelmator and Preview and this has only happened since I upgraded to Aperture 3.1.2 and OS 10.6.7 so I assume it is an issue with exporting. I have sent a report to Apple but since no one else seems to have this problem I am at a loss as to what to do next.

  • Images darken after editing in both Lightroom and PS

My apologies if this topic has been recently addressed, I've canvassed both Adobe's online documentation as well as several archival pages of this thread without finding mention of it.
I'm shooting JPEGs on a D70, importing them in Lightroom. LR has been working fine for me, except when I do adjustments on a jpg and then export it to PS with the 'Export Copy with LR Adjustments' option. The image shows up fine in PS as a .psd, and I can do all my editing on it fine, but when I then save it as a jpg, the resulting file will look dark and desaturated when viewed in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, or when uploaded online. However, when viewed again in PS, the color looks fine.
This occurs whether I export the file in ProPhoto or AdobeRGB color.
Again, this issue only occurs if I edit the same file both in LR and PS. Files edited exclusively in either LR or PS look fine when saved as jpgs.
I'm a little baffled here, and obviously it's a hindrance to my workflow not being able to do edits in both programs, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Jao,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've come back to checking LR vs PS and the images look so much closer than they did last night. These are the same images without any further adjustments or change in the application prefs. I'm using two monitors but I've been viewing the images from both applications on the same monitor. My PS prefs are set-up correctly and my monitor was hardware calibrated less than a week ago.
The only thing I can put this down to is that I launched LR after changing my main monitor from one to the other in the System prefs (where you drag the white top bar across to specify which is the start-up monitor) whereas last night I seem to remember having LR already launched before I switched monitors. As the monitor profiles are slightly different for each monitor because they're not the same LR must have adjusted the way it displayed according to the monitor profile at launch time. This is my best guess.
Anyway, now I have a really good match from exporting JPG's from LR to a colour profile of sRGB so I didn't have to do any kind of conversion/adjustment/batch process in PS which is a relief as I've got 188 images I need to get printed at a lab at various sizes.
    Cheers
    Nas

  • Imported images becomes too bright

When I'm importing RAW images in my Aperture 2.1.4, my images becomes very brighter, something like 2 F Stop.
I'm wondering why, and what to do to resolve the problem....
    Thx !

Strangely, I have exactly the opposite problem. Images darken (visibly) during or immediately after an image is imported.
I haven't found the solution, and have actually migrated to Lightroom largely because of this and problems with how exported images are rendered - dull and dark. The latter could simply be a problem with not using the correct colour profile when exporting.
I thought it might have to do with enabling the Onscreen Proofing feature (View > Onscreen Proofing), but having played with that there's no noticeable difference.
Have you had any further luck investigating the problem?

  • Calculations - weird results with add blend

When using the calculations command to blend two channels with the ADD blend mode I am getting strange results when using a negative offset with a 16 bit image. The preview behaves as expected with the image darkening but when I press OK the light areas become dark and vice versa. Looking at Levels all pixels are either sent to 0 or 255.
8 bit images perform as I would expected.
Has anyone else noticed this behaviour ?

I am not sure why you have used addNode method on same parentNode two times (line by line) because you already have added node in first line and now you have to save it. May be this is causing issue.
    parentNode = parentNode.addNode("orignal", "nt:file");
    parentNode.addNode("orignal", "nt:file");
let me know if it does not help you.

  • Aperture 3 and underexposed RAW conversion

I run Aperture 3.03 with CameraRAW 3.3 and OS 10.6.4. I use a Nikon D300 and download as referenced images into Aperture via a SanDisk card reader.
Somewhere around the time I upgraded to CameraRAW 3.3 and OS 10.6.4 (not exactly at the same time but within a short period of time) I have noticed in Aperture 3 that my newly imported images appear significantly underexposed. In fact, I can watch as a batch of properly exposed imported images darken one after the other as they are processed. This has never been a problem before. At present I have resorted to manually adjusting the images in Aperture, usually requiring anywhere from 1 to 2 full stops of exposure adjustment to make a correction. Even with lift and stamp this is a very tedious process with 200 to 300 images at a time.
I expose my images with care and always view the on-camera histogram to check against over/under exposure.
Am I missing something obvious that i should be doing differently? Could it be my camera?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Bob

First thing to look at is the histogram, you say that it is correct in camera. It should look much the same in Aperture. You also say the images darken, this is normal behavior as they get processed. If they look ok on the histogram the are ok. Raw can record a little more of the light and dark areas of a scene, than is represented on the histogram and these areas can be pulled in with adjustments.
Any adjustments that you want to make as the images are imported is easy. Presets allow any adjustments to be applied during import. Make the adjustments to a typical image, go to Presets at the bottom of the drop down list is Save. Click and these adjustments can be selected on the Import Panel Presets and applied to every image as it is imported.
If using the Lift and Stamp, select the images to be adjusted, with the Shift and Apple (command) key, ensure the Primary only is not on, in the bottom right corner of the Viewer. Allthe images get processed one after another automatically.
The exposure is what it was at the time the image was captured. Aperture cannot change that.
If a preset has been darkening the images the last paragraph will solve that.

  • AIR is not loaded properly

    Hi,
This technique of submitting a question is another reason to be unhappy with Adobe.
I purchased earlier versions of Adobe Premiere and Photoshop a couple of years back.  I never managed to get Premiere working.  I wouldn't guarantee the Photoshop was working optimally either.  I decided to upgrade to Adobe Premiere and Photoshop 9, with the hope to finally finish some projects.  I've struggled with Adobe Premiere occasionally, and finally decided to work with the program until I finally manage to edit a movie - the only project I expect to undertake with Adobe Premiere.
What I am attempting to do is brighten segments of some old 8mm films that Costco copied to a disk for me.   When clicking on Edit - Effects - Brightness & Contrast the only thing that occurs is the image darkens - it will not brighten.  I downloaded the Premiere 9 manual from your site.  Page 152 talks about using the "Properties view".  The manual shows a "Brightness and Contrast" section under that section.  The Adobe Premier on my computer does not have that option.
I tried to use the Adobe Premiere "Help" option.  The program reports back Adobe AIR - The installation  of this application is damaged.  Try re-installing or contacting the purblisher for assistance.  I have uninstalled the module - restarted my computer - and reinstalled AIR.  I have exactly the same problem.
Help, please.  Answers to any of my problems will be appreciated.

If you have never been able to get any version of the program workiing on your machine, you problem is likely too deep for us to troubleshoot on this forum, 123.
Although, having Costco digitize your video is likely a big contributor to your problems. Most likely they did not save the video as DV-AVIs.
Another likely contributor is the fact that you've apparently opened a project created in an older version of the program with a newer version of the program -- a definite no-no.
By the way, you refer to "your manual." This forum is not run by Adobe. It's run by volunteers around the world who are eager to help people work through their issues. So please save the vitriol for Adobe. We're here dozens of hours of week for no compensation whatsoever.
Anyway and regardless, I think you're going to need to contact Adobe -- or have somebody give your system a good going-over. (Here's what I do every week on my computer, and I haven't had a serious issue in over 5 years -- AND every version of the program runs on my computer: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/390602?tstart=30 )
Otherwise, you're probably going to have to work through Adobe Tech Support. You've got some serious problems on your computer and you need to address them.

  • How to highlight parts of slide and dim the background

I'm trying to figure out a way of accomplishing the following. I've searched the forums but haven't turned up anything so if anyone has some advice I'd appreciate it.
I have a slide with an image that I am trying to highlight certain areas of. The sequence of events I am trying to achieve is this:
    1) Slide appears with image in the center
    2) The image darkens, and a rectangular highlight appears, similar to using the crop tool in Preview.app
    3) The first highlight remains, and a second rectangular highlight appears
I'd like to use this effect to call out specific areas of an image in a nicer way than simply drawing a rectangle around them.
I can't figure out if this is possible. I can get to step 2 by constructing a shape with a hole in the middle and placing it over the first image, but I cannot then add a second highlight since the first shape is obstructing the area I want to expose in the second highlight. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

I find that when using Keynote it helps to start the approach to an effect by concentrating on the visual appearance of the final effect, rather than starting in concrete term about specific techniques. In that way, it is more likely that I generate a non-obvious but easy way to create the effect, which might otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve with Keynote's tools.
All of this is a roundabout way to saying that the approach you outline, of covering part of the image, is not the easiest. The easiest approach is likely to cover the entire image you want to darken, and then at the same time build in the original undimmed image on top, masked so that only the relevant part shows. You can do this as many times as you like, and thus have multiple "highlight" sections on the same slide. The Keynote guides make it extremely easy to align the multiple images and then mask the relevant parts, so that they all look like a single image.
This approach is very flexible, and allows all sorts of cool variants. For example, you can take an original colour image, then dissolve in on top of it the same image but with the saturation turned down so that it is black and white, and a third copy in the original colour but with everything masked except an area of interest. The resulting effect is that a colour image will appear to fade to black and white except for one highlighted region that remains in colour. This is a very nice subtle way to do highlighting in images
Alternatively, you can also achieve what you want with your initial approach, if you use multiple slides. On the first slide, construct your masking image with the single hole, and do the appropriate build. On the second slide, construct a new mask with holes for both highlighted sections. Now, to make the second highlight appear, simply transition between the two slides. As long as the slides are otherwise identical, and the transition used is appropriate (such as dissolve, or even none), it will appear as if one slide has now acquired a second highlighted section.

  • Any solution to the h.264 gamma bug?

I am one of those victims of the h.264 gamma bug. When I compress a movie out of Final Cut Pro using h.264, the gamma in the resulting video is too bright, making the movie look washed out. This happens regardless of whether I use Compressor or Quicktime compression, or even save a full quality and compress it later.
I'm using Final Cut 6.0.6, OS X 10.6.2, a MacBook Pro with an external HP monitor. Both the external (main) monitor and the built-in monitor use custom calibrations. I have also tried disconnecting the external monitor and compressing when the built-in monitor is the only one, but that makes no difference. I've also tried x264 but that did not improve anything either.
    Thanks for any thoughts...

Yes, I've experienced this phenomenon as well. The H.264 codec squeezes down, compresses, all your beautiful color information into a tighter package but loses some of the color and luminance factors. I'm sure there's a more scientific description of what happens but anyway...
To my knowledge there is no filter for Quicktime that fixes this issue, that's just the way it will come out looking. But you can handicap your image, darken or otherwise adjust the gamma levels or color settings, so that when the "gamma bug" hits your video, you've already compensated for the change in brightness & color. You can use the Color Correct 3-way tool in FCP to darken the darks, mids and whites so that when the gamma shift takes place in creating the H.264, the output will look closer to the original image.
Now, this will take some playing around with. And it will probably vary some depending on the make-up of your source footage. But it's worth a shot if you want better looking H.264's.
    Hope this helps.

  • Video changes after applying text track

Has anyone here seen this problem.
I work for education, so by federal law we must caption all video used by students. The problem I'm encountering is that when I apply a text track to a QT file, so that it is captioned, it changes the video track, so that the color doubles and the contrast of the image darkens.
If I turn off the text track this problem persists. If I extract the video from this file, (using the extract track option) into a new movie, (no text track brought over from the old movie) the video is fine again, till I add a new text track, then the whole problem presents itself again.
Has anyone seen this problem and if so, is there a soultion?
This also happens, if you apply a chapter text track as well.

    Thanks for the resonse
The files are generated from an uncompressed 10bit video file, (exported out of FCP) and encoded, using Cleaner 6.5.
Chapter, (added in FCP) and captioning, (via Mac Caption Pro software) is added to the file, via text tracks, to the origianl video. These tracks are turned off prior to encoding the QT streaming files. But the data is transfered to the final QT streaming file during the creation of the steraming file.
All settings are set at default, the videos transparency is set to "None (allow dithering)" Layer 0. I've never change any of the settings of the tracks from there default settings.
To see this issue on your end, just extract the video from one of your current QT files, which will open it into a new window an compare the two videos at the same frame. More than likely, you will see what I'm seeing. Once a text track has been turned on, unchecking it will not return the video to normal, only extraction of the video to a new movie will reveal the original state of the the QT video.
Let me know what you find, thanks!

  • Interactive brush resizing should work off-canvas

It won't work unless the brush is actually over the canvas. I can't see a reason for this.

i still don't see any problems - it looks like Photoshop is doing what it's supposed to do
    first:
the levels adjutsment layer was added, and  the levels were darkened, so your entire image appears slightly darker.
Next, you filled that same adjutsment layer with black as your foreground color, so what this did was 'hide' that darkened adjustment layer, so your image returned to normal. The darkened levels is still there on that layer, but it's hidden (by filling the entire layer in black)
now when you change your foreground color to white (just use the color picker to chane your painting color to white), just choose a soft airbursh tool and paint on to the adjutsment layer - now because you're using white, it is "un-hiding", or showing the darkened levels and the gray smear is just the darkened levels showing through- take note of your brush opacity - make sure it's at 100% for starters. If you want that 'gray smear' to appear darker, then double click on the split-circle icon (beside the eye icon on your layer) and the levels window should show up again - then re-adjust those levels sliders again so they're even darker - you'll notice that gray smear on your image darkening as you pull the sliders down.
The degree of darkness that the gray smear appears to be is totally dependant on how far you pull the sliders in the 'levels' panel
for example, you can pull the sliders all the way in one direction and the gray smear will turn very very dark, or pull the sliders the other way and the gray smear will turn very very bright (all the way up until it's actually white)
what you're showing us looks to be total normal behavior - you might try reading up on adjustment layers to get a better understanding of what's actually happening, but there appears to be no problems with your Photoshop or your camera

  • Brush resizing on the fly

I've seen several places that you should be able to resize the brush with a key + mouse drag combination. The first one I saw was Ctrl + Alt + drag left or right but for me this just produces a new layer. I've tried other combinations of those keys but nothing seems to work. I'm on a Windows XP machine with a wired Logitech mouse. My PS CS6 is new and I haven't changed the preferences at all so far.

  • Possible to fade-in/fade-out vignettes?

    Hey there,
Im color correcting a project which has a lot of fades to black in it. Which is fine, just every time I use a secondary vignette the fade to black reveals the vignettes because the whole image darkens.
I was wandering if its possible to fade the vignettes as well? I cant seem to find anything in the manual.
    thanks for your help.
    R.

if its possible to fade the vignettes
With keyframes, if I'm following you. Set a keyframe pair to "reset" the secondary to dissolve the effect in or out depending on whether its a fade up or down...
Its one of the drawbacks of working with a "baked" timeline, having to emulate the effects applied in the edit application.

  • Apple iMac 5k late 2014 and Lightroom 5.7 very slow

    Hello forum,
I bought a brandnew Apple iMac 27" 5k with 32 GB RAM, i7 processor with 4 GHz and the 4 GB graphic engine.
I'm using Lightroom since I have heared that Apple will stop supporting Aperture.
With my older iMac (late 2012) there was no problems with Lightroom.
Now with my brandnew and not cheap iMac I have great performance problems.
The cut- and rotate function (Cmd + R) is horrible slow and ruckelig.
Is somebody here to help me?
In the Adobe suportcenter I havn't found a telephonenumber, only the possibility to write down my problems here.
    Thanks for your help!
    Regards
    Dietrich

I too, have iMac 2014; 4Hz; 32GB; 5K, having up until that point worked on a late '09 2.66GHz iMac - I could have bought a Mac Pro....or anything on offer.
But, this purchase was the result of my going into the Apple Store and having two lengthy discussions/consultations with the Business Team, the sole objective of having them, the experts, specify the best Mac for me and my requirements i.e. to all intents and purposes, operating at 'click speed'.
The team was in full possession of my workflow, the software I used, the file sizes etc. etc......even though it is optimised, I still find my iMac disappointingly slow for the money spent. It boots up quickly enough, and somedays appears to perform better than others, but still I find lags in cropping, loading, using sliders, previews. Other than what I would call slow processing,  the most annoying issue is a lag when I use any slider - click on the slider and the image darkens for a second before returning to the setting values. Move the slider and the image darkens slightly, but after a second will return the new value of the new setting. It is impossible to make fine, smooth, real-time adjustments.
    BTW, works fine with PS6.
Tried phoning Adobe Customer Support.......no point.
    Tried 'Chat'.....no point.
    Ended up here in hope
