Image dimensions not consistent (Nikon vs. Apple / Aperture)

I just realized something strange about RAW (NEF) images taken with my new Nikon D700 and copied to my Mac: according to Nikon's specifications (http://tinyurl.com/54cdn9) full FX size RAW images are supposed to be 4,256 x 2,832 pixels.
My Mac however thinks these images are 4,256 x 2,828 pixels - no matter whether I look at the Finder info (Get Info), open the RAW file in Preview or import it into Aperture.
But when I open the very same RAW file with Photoshop, do some basic RAW processing and look at the image dimensions once the file has been opened, it has the 4,256 x 2,832 pixels that it actually should have. Same thing when imported into Adobe Lightroom, by the way.
I remember also having realized this differnce in dimensions with my D300. My Mac thought it had different dimensions than the ones as specified by Nikon and recognized by non-Apple applications.
Now, I am quite a bit concerned about losing 4 pixels in height - not of course because the images get dramatically smaller, but because they are (incorrectly) resized and lose quality.
My questions would be:
Am I the only one with that inconsistency? What dimensions do your D700 or D300 images have? Are these consistent to Nikon's specifications?
Do you agree that those 4 pixels affect image quality?
Or is there a good reason why Apple is tampering with image dimensions and I just don't get it? What am I missing?
Comments welcome!

So what you're saying is that while the number of pixels is different in height, there is no sort of scaling etc. applied to the images when rendering them in different height as specified by the camera manufacturer?
Or at least very, very little. It is not even sure that Nikon's calculations give a more correct value than Apple's.
What if it were not 4 pixels that were different, but 200 or 400? Wouldn't some distortion be visible in the images or would these 400 px just get cropped away?
I'm sure it would be visible at 400 pixels difference.
I apologize if I may sound ignorant, but I just don't see any reason why an app would not adhere to a camera manufacturer's specs and apply differing image dimensions for no apparent reason, even if it's just 4 pixels?
I do not know the exact reason either, but I'm sure there is one. What I know is that interpreting a RAW file is not trivial. The same discrepancy is there with both my D300 and my D40X.
By the way, I tried as you suggested, fired up my Windows XP on VMWare and installed IrfanView and Picasa - while IrfanView follows Nikons specifications with RAW dimensions of 4256 x 2832, Picasa does not: 4284 x 2844.
Very strange thing... and I thought I was experienced in digital imaging and photography... hmmm.
I'm sure you are. But we cannot all know everything. You can search the forum for other discussions on the subject. I'm sure you can google for an indepth explanation as well, even though I do not know which key words to use.

  • Why will images will not automatically load in apple mail despite having the setting turned on correctly

I have had this ongoing problem. I cannot get images to automatically load in mail. Instead I always have to click the load images button. I click on a message, click load images, the images load. I click on another message, then back to the message with the images and have to reload them.
In preferneces I have turned the View>Load remote HTML images on and off and on again, and rebotted multiple times. It makes no difference. The images do not load.
I checked Little Snitch, but all ports are open.
My firewall is set to let everything connect to mail. Even just turning off the firewall does not solve the problem.
I tried removing com.apple.mail.plist but that did not work either.
This problem occurs in Mail on a MacBook Pro and on a MacBook Air both using the newest version of OS Mountain Lion. The problem happened in OS Lion as well.
The senders are in my contacts, so that doesn't help either.
This is not an issue with the serve sending the images. The images load if I click load images. They just will not automatically laod.
I've read tons of posts but no one seems to know how to solve the problem.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

I am not sure how to link these discussions, so below I am pasting the post that helped me. And here is the link:

This is not a problem specific to Lion, but most recent OS X versions. Regularly I receive email formatted as HTML, which includes JPEG images embedded within them. These images are technically attachments, and as such, Mail.app displays them as a placeholder. Other mail apps will display these images inline, regardless of them being an attachment, remote image or otherwise.
How can I make these images load automatically?
    MacBook, Unibody, Mac OS X (10.7), 750GB, 7200RPM WD HDD, 4GB RAM

No-one replied, but I found a solution on another board. Run Terminal (do a Spotlight search if you don't know where to find this), and type:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool false
This will force Mail not to disable inline attachment viewing. Obviously, to reverse this, simple replace 'false' at the end with 'true'.

  • Image Dimensions not showing

This MAY be a Photoshop CS3 issue, so forgive me if it is, but I can no longer see image dimensions in the (Leopard) finder. The problem seems to have started when I upgraded to Photoshop CS3, but I upgraded to Leopard just a few days prior to the CS3 upgrade. If I look at images that were already on my hard drive before Leopard, the dimensions appear. Any new images I save via Photoshop no longer have dimensions appearing in the finder preview area.
Edit: This definitely appears to be a Leopard issue. It appears that ALL new images, no matter which program saved it, do not have dimensions attached. I opened a jpeg with Preview and saved it as both a jpeg and a png, and no dimensions appeared.

I was doing a lot of graphics stuff the other day, for many hours, and noticed that the things I had just saved were not showing the pixel dimensions in the Finder. For me simply selecting the image in the Finder caused the dimensions to appear. You might also try a restart, then open a folder with the new images and see if the dimensions are now present. Also had a bizarre result in Cover Flow where several newly created images all displayed as being exactly the same (all looked like the first image created). In that case a force restart of the Finder brought things back to sanity.

  • Unsupported Image Format RAW (NEF) Nikon d7000 in Aperture 3, why?

I just bought a Nikon D7000.  According to the Aperture 3 specs, it supports RAW (NEF) format from this camera.  However, I get the message that the image format, which loads as thumbnails in the viewer, is not supported.  I just downloaded the trial version of Aperture 3 (I'm not going to upgrade from my current version if it actually does NOT support this format).
    I'm running OS X 10.5.8 witn 2.4G Intel Core 2 Duo 4G DDR3 memory Macbook Pro.
What other info do I need to provide to diagnose this?

Technically, you should only need to verify that you have at least the RAW Compatibility Update 3.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1357
Current version is 3.7 which can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1386
Note - I assume that the 3.7 would include 3.6, but am not sure.
If you already have the correct RAW support for OS X and are importing new images into a new or trial library, you might try running the 'Repair Database' option found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Good luck.

  • Since upgrading to Maverick my iPhoto does not consistently download my Nikon or my Canon camera photos.

Since upgrading to Maverick my iPhoto does not consistently download my Nikon or my Canon camera photos. Occasionally it will recognize and download photos, most of the time though it hangs in "loading" mode with nothing downloaded. I've unplugged, replugged numerous times, tried a different USB port, tried the two cameras so it's not the camera or line that's the issue, turned the computer off, turned iphoto off, turned everything else off and stil nothing. I need my photos for my work and can't get to them, this seems to be an issue with Maverick AGAIN!!! Is there a fix? HELP! Thanks!

    iPhoto Version 9.5.1
Thank you for your help Terence. I had 140 photos on my Nikon, none were viewable in iphoto, in Image Capture 5 were viewable, 135 weren't. I tried importing one to my desktop but it remained static and didn't move over. I just deleted all the photos on my camera, took a fresh photo and after waiting a good 4 minutes finally uploaded to both iphoto and Image Capture. As this took so long for one photo I'm wondering if the memory in my computer would impact the speed. I have 350GB used and 150GB left
By reformat the cards do you mean the flash card in the camera? I don't know how to do that, it's less that 6 months old.

  • My title and description info on my iPhoto images do not import to Aperture with the image

My title and description info on my iPhoto images do not import to Aperture 3.2 with the image. Is this just the default setting and if so, is there a way to import all the info?

  • Aperture 3.1.1 does not import Nikon RAW files from Nikon Coolpix P7000

    Hi,
I'm running Aperture 3.1.1. The problem is that it will not display Nikon RAW (NRW) files from the Coolpix P7000.
Recently, a compatibility update was published for the Coolpix P7000 and other cameras. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1339?viewlocale=en_US
When I load the update however, the installer tells me that "this update is only for Iphoto 11 and Aperture 3" which is a bit odd , since I have Aperture 3 ?!
    Can anyone help please ?
    Kind Regards
    Andreas

Welcome to the list. Make sure you read the [Help & Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] section when you get a chance.
Do you have Aperture installed in the Applications folder as Aperture (not Aperture3 or anything like that)?

  • Column view in Finder does not display image dimensions

Image dimensions display a -- when browsing in column view. If I view info on the image it appears. If I move off the highlighted image file and go back it disappears again. I have looked into the spotlight solution and do not have any folders listed under Privacy. I am running 10.7.4 and all updates are current.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash this file:
    com.apple.finder.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You may have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).
On the basis of the specifications you have given for your set up, mirroring should work.

  • In the trial version of LR5, my NEF images (taken with a Nikon D7100) are not visible

I downloaded the trial version of LR5, then imported a set of images, shot with my new Nikon D7100, and saved as both JPEG and NEF on the memory card.  When I imported them to LR, the JPEG images are visible but the NEF images are grey squares--although the image info (date, size, etc) show when the cursor hovers over the square.  When I click on one of the NEF squares to open the image, "Could not read preview" appears instead of the image. I've used earlier LR versions and never encountered this problem so I have no idea what is going on.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone uses that utility to download their images. The import dialog in Lightroom works perfectly to do that transfer. I don't know if Nikon Transfer is the culprit since you are using a newer version. But here is a link to a utility that you can use that is supposed to correct the problem caused by using Nikon Transfer. I have never used it, but have seen it recommended. I also have never used Nikon Transfer to download files from my Nikon cameras.

  • APERTURE: Small preview images do not show the changes.

    excuse my lousy english...
    Problem with Aperture:
Small preview images do not show the changes.
I use Aperture 3 since August 2010. By November and 10 projects later it ran normally.
Since the project 11 are in the preview images shown (on the bottom bar in the shared representation) and in the pictures in the books no adjustments. I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the great View Erbild s / w is. Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
This is of course in the processing of multiple images per project huntert pretty annoying to have no overview of processed images ...:-(
I had a third installed for books and not as close a relationship.
Does anyone have similar experience or know someone how can I fix this?
    Thanks for reading!
    Lokoe

    Lokoe,
    To make sure we understand:
I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the *great View Erbild s / w is*.
I am not sure what "s/w" is, but I think you mean:
"I change picture to black and white and the small preview images remain *in color* even though the *big picture in the Viewer* is in B/W."
Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
"In the books the selected picture is colorful and even ???"
"Grobpixelig" -> "grosspixelig" -> "Looks like big pixels???" Not quite sure of the translation. It's been 15 years since I spoke Deutsch!

  • Aperture album contents not all showing on Apple TV photos; random photos missing

Only noticed this problem by chance when searching for a particular set of photos while viewing Aperture photos via an Apple TV 2. Some Albums are fine others have a random number of photos missing (compared with viewing in Aperture itself) with as little as one photo being shown when there are hundreds in the Album. Any suggestions/ideas as to whether the problem may a set up issue or systematic?

You may not have previews built for the photos that are not showing up. Select all the pictures in the Album that is not displaying all photos, right click while holding the mouse over one of the selected photos, and then select "update previews". After Aperture has built previews for all the photos in that album, you may have to quit Aperture before they will all show up on the AppleTV (when you quit Aperture you will see a progress bar saying "updating sharing preferences", or something to that effect).
If there is a way to get Aperture to update sharing preferences without quiting, will someone reply to the method to achive this? So far, quiting is the only way I have discovered to force Aperture to update the sharing prefs.
Let us know if this works. Usually photos not showing up outside of Aperture is caused from not having previews built for those photos.

  • This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support

Editing Error: This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.
I have been having this issue when trying to open photos in CS4. It only seems to be affecting images from the last year or so, although I'm using the same cameras (Canon 7D, 5D, and S90) as before. My library is large, going back to year 2000, and all the older images seem to work fine, but most all of the recent files display this error when trying to open them is CS4. I've tried the methods described in other threads and on the support website, namely starting aperture while holding option and command, pulling up the options to rebuild the library in various ways. I've done all three options, the last two twice, with no change. This is very frustrating to not be able to use the program in the way I had planned... Any ideas? I'm wondering if my library is simply too large- although I'm not sure if breaking the library into smaller chunks is the best way to go. I prefer having all my photos together. I have found that iMovie fails to operate properly when events get too large. Is this a similar problem?

Again, thanks for the input. As for the first suggestion, when I import without renaming they all work, but as of late, all appear to work no problem. It seems like it was a block of time from roughly October 2009 through November 2010 where most all the files imported during this date demonstrate the problem. As for the second suggestion, I've tried both 8 and 16 bit TIFF and PSD file types selected in the editor preferences, with no luck.
My next move has been to relocate the offending files out of their current location to another location (they are referenced, not managed). In doing this, I encountered what seems to be a file access or privelege error message, although about 20% of the files were moved, and in doing so, it seems to have solved the problem for those. But I don't have a good way of isolating the involved images outside of Aperture, and I don't want to move them with Finder anyways since that would ruin the referencing.
This bug is getting so complicated I'm ready to throw my hands in the air and just go back to Lightroom. Aperture has so much potential, especially in regards to integration with ipods, iPads, other Macs, etc. but in the 4 months I've been using it, I have spent WAY more time addressing buggy issues like this one than the amount of time supposedly saved using Aperture instead of Lightroom.

  • Editing Nikon D800 RAW files from LR4 to CS6...Images are not appearing in PS6

I just downloaded the latest PS6 and Camera Raw files.  If I'm in LR4 and chose to edit an image in CS6 the image does not load.  I never had the beta version of CS6.  The files are from Nikon D800.

  • Elements 9 does not accept or process RAW photo images taken with a Nikon D7000.

Adobe elements 9 does not accept or process RAW photo images taken with a Nikon D7000. I called support for a download patch and they said I had to purchase a support package or essentially purchase Elements 10. I can't believe that Adobe would not have a download patch for this problem as my elements 9 is not very old. When I try to do the updates Adobe says the serial number of the elements 9 is not accepted for download or support even though I purchased it and registered it with Adobe.
Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks.

Thank you but still having a problem. I go to the edit menu>>help>>update>>check for updates and an update to 9.03 comes up as the only update, no camera raw update. It starts to download and then stops and says to close organizer and/or editor then starts back up and stops again saying "error installing this update. Close and contact customer support". When I called customer support earlier that's when they said they don't support 9 only v. 10 and did I want to buy support or a new program v10 to get camera raw processing for the Nikon D7000 RAW. Apparently I'm doing something wrong in the update procedure but don't know what. The camera raw version is 6.5 in my elements and understand that camera raw v. 6.7 is the update to process the images. Any ideas? If I uninstall and reinstall does the serial number still work on the reinstall?
    Thanks for help.
