Image Downsampling Settings for PDFs

Hello.  I am experimenting with the PDF settings in Acrobat to try to find a good compromise between image quality and file size.  I am trying to learn about bicubic downsampling for images and what would be good settings to use.  One thing that I've noticed in the different default PDF settings provided by Adobe (High Quality Print, Press Quality, Standard, Smallest File Size, etc.) is that the pixels per inch threshold for downsampling images is always 1.5 times greater than the downsampled image.  For example, the Standard setting downsamples images above 225 ppi to 150 ppi, and the High Quality Print setting downsamples images above 450 ppi to is 300 ppi.  Could someone explain the reason for using this ratio?  Also, why not just have one value for downsampling?  For example, for the Standard setting, why not just downsample all images above 150 ppi to 150 ppi?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Mark,
To get the highest possible quality jpeg you need to export with the preset "Jpeg - original size" with its default settings.  Check, how they are set:
Size to:  This lets you specify the dimensions of your image files in various ways.
Original size, percent of original size, fit within all refer to the dimensions of the digital image measured in pixels, and that is directly related to the resolution of the the image. You will want to preserve as many pixels per row and column as the original image has, so set this to original size.
cm, inches refers to the width and height of the printed or displayed version of your image. It will only make sense, if you specify dpi as well. Then the pixel size of your exported images will be computed from the dpi (dots per inch) you set and the dimensions in inches.  I prefer "Original size", unless I know I want to print an images with 4 by 6 inches e.g., then I use this setting and set the dpi to 300.
The image quality slider: Jpeg is a lossy format, as you probably know. A jpeg image is not represented by a grid of pixels but by a set of coefficients for a mathematical approximation function. The higher the quality value,  the more coefficients will be stored and the more storage will be needed. A low value will result in a highly compressed image file with a small size, but horrible quality, because the approximation is not very accurate. The edges and fine details will be approximated poorly, and the image will show blocky artifacts. The quality sider set to 12 will ensure that the image will be represented perfectly with no artifacts, but the size of the image file will be a lot larger. A quality of 10 will be a good compromise in many cases, but you will have to experiment. This will largely depend on the type of image you are having.
I'll leave the answer to the last three points to the colour experts here.

  • Set image colour settings for multiple images

In my workflow I place (Adobe)RGB images into InDesign. PDF export takes care of the RGB to CMYK conversion (convert to destination with preserve numbers).
However this uses the default rendering intent for every conversion: relative colorimetric.
For images, i want to use perceptual.
Is there a way to quickly select all images and change the rendering intent?
All the images have the same ojbect style. Unfortunately i could not find a way to couple the rendering intent to the object style.

You can do it it via Assign Profiles...
It can also be scripted, something like this AppleScript:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        tell active document
            set imgs to all graphics
repeat with x from 1 to count imgs
if class of item x of imgs is image then
                    try
set image rendering intent of item x of imgs to perceptual
                    end try
                end if
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell

  • How to select settings for pdf version when combining files

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a way to set the settings of the resultant pdf, like you can do for word and such (see screenshot). I have pdf's that are 1.4 compliant but when i merge them together they become v1.6 compliant. Ideally i'd like ability of right clicking the files and selecting the combine option from the context menu and the resultant file keeping to v1.4.
Any help would be appreciated thx

Thanks, we already do this but I would like to set it and forget it... Theres always someone that will forget the extra step

  • Secruity settings for pdf file

I have many pdf files on my intranet and/or internet site.  We secure the files so they cannot be modified, but we allow printing and downloading.  Our site search engine cannot index these files and therefore they do not show when someone tries to search for them.  Also, when the files is open in the browser the 'find' function does not work.
Does anyone know how to set up the security to allow indexing?  Are there any tutorials available that describe the security settings in detail?

Thank you.  I will test that setting to make sure it suits our needs.

What should i have my export settings at when exporting to a jump drive to give to clients for web and printing use???

Are there specific settings with-in Aperture I can set for exporting so that clients have the ability to print as wanted and post on the web as wanted whithout losing any major amount of photo quality?
No, not for one size fits all.
I do appreciate this may be a frustrating answer, but non-the-less, that's how it is.
    t_hall10 wrote:
Should I be gving 2 folders of pictures, one for web use and one for printing use? If I were to do that, what should the exporting setting be set for both folders?
    Maybe, it's your choice.
    Let's go through the settings.
The only real quality setting is for JPG compression. 12 is virtually no (lossless) compression but gives huge file sizes which may breach a websites limits.
A 16MP images on quality 12 will be about 22MB. 11 brings it down to 8MB and 10 down to 7MB. You'd be very hard pressed to see the difference between a 12 and a 10. But if you want to feel you are giving the best quality without the extreme file size, go for 11.
The the vast majority of web sites, like facebook, will either resize uploaded images and/or re-compress them. They may also crop them to a different aspect ratio to fit their browser software.
Many report the best size for upload to facebook, for small images is 960 pixels on the long side. For large images it's 2048. For different websites it may be different. It is discussed on many photography sites and blogs. You will find some promoting the 960 / 2048, and others with their own preferences. Here's a good one which also shows you many ways FB will mess with the images:
    http://havecamerawilltravel.com/photographer/images-photos-facebook-sizes-dimens ions-types
The safest colour space is sRGB (Mac profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1) as it will more often be right than wrong. You should preview your images on screen with this profile to get a feel for how it will look and avoid unexpected colour shifts in your files. Ideally your screen should be calibrated so you know what you are giving them is accurate.
To understand the printing issue, try this exercise:
If you have a printer installed on your Mac, it probably also installed some printer profiles. In Aperture, look at one of your nicer vibrant images. From the view menu turn on 'Onscreen Proofing' and then from the 'Proofing Profile' sub menu, select one of your printer profiles and look at how the onscreen image changes. Repeat with each of the printing profiles and see how the image changes each time.
This is only a fraction of the colour shifts that will be occuring after you give your file to someone and they print it on their own uncalibrated system with their uncalibrated printer.
Many photographers don't offer full size images to their clients. They will usually give them smaller versions for their own use, which may include small size printing.
They will either do the main printing themself on their own calibrated printer, or work with a print shop, and may have installed calibrated profiles on their system for the shops printing equipment so they can use onscreen proofing to gauge what the pictures will look like when printed on that equipment.
But if you are just giving a file to someone, you lose all control of how they will print it. Even experienced photographers and computer users can struggle to make the prints match close to what they look like on screen.
Most often photos will appear too dark, or the colours look wrong, or it lacks sharpness. There are some settings on the export presets for gamma and blackpoint compensation. Gamma will brighten the image for when it's printing too dark, and blackpoint will try to stop the shadows turning black (within the chosen colour space). But as you don't know in advance whether the images are going to print too dark, or the shadows are turning black, you can't really set these for a one-size fits all scenario.
So there are not many settings to help you here.
You are actually moving into the realm of defining your product. You could, for example, ask the client which site they intend to publish the photos on, research that site and produce files optimized specifically for that site.
You also need to decide what size (resolution) files to give them for printing and whether you are happy giving away your full size images.
These choices will lead you to a number of a different files sizes as 'your product', all should be in sRGB colour space, and all with quality 10 or 11. For any client's who know how to make use of a wider clour space like Adobe RGB for printing, they will probably ask you up front to supply the print versions as such.
Next, for each size and usage, you now need to sharpen these images.
This is because sharpeing is best applied to images that have been resized to their intended output size and should be sharpened in accordance with how they will be viewed. Images displayed on computer screen generally need less sharpening than those that will be printed. Depening on the printer, the images may need some oversharpening in the file, in order to appear crisp and sharp in the print. As you won't be controlling the printing process you should probably avoid oversharpening. The bottom line is, if people are taking on the task of their own printing, they'll need to figure out what they are doing to get good results, or use a commercial printer.

The default is Preview, and you change it thus:
Select a pdf file, rightclick and select 'Get Info', in the pane that opens scroll down to the section marked 'Open With', select Preview and check the box to 'Change All'

  • Best settings for quality/size trade-off when exporting to QT?

    Hi All,
I've been using Keynote '09 (5.3) to record narrated slide shows (slides with me narrating by voice) for my online class "lecture" podcast series for a while - now that the beloved, but quirky and unsupported, ProfCast has fallen by the wayside. This works well - as we all know - producing clear audio and visuals that upload well to YouTube, where I am now hosting the files.
The problem I'm running into now is that my lectures often last around 50 minutes, and this produces enormous file sizes (like the original Keynote file comes in around 800MB with the slideshow saved). I've been exporting to Quicktime with full size video and mixed audio set to AAC, and this produces a QT mov of around 130MB or so. Still quite large, but at least manageable for uploading, even with DSL at home.
Ideally, though, I'd have even smaller mov files, but without much loss in quality. In my earlier experimentation, I realized that it was the audio that was eating up loads of space. However, switching to half size video cuts the same file to around 80MB as well. Once I've opened the can of worms of custom audio and video settings, I feel like there are many, many possible combinations of sizes and qualities...and it's difficult to steadily compare each and every permuationg (it takes a while for each export to run!).
So, the question I have is: are any of the other AAC settings in the menu likely to make a significant dent in mov file size? Or, are these really just small differences on the margin? Even if I stay with AAC overall, would tweaking the kHz Rate make much of a difference?
Looking forward to any wisdom from experience you all might have to pass along!

I was looking for command-line PDF conversion tools and eventually found out this:
    https://www.pdf-tools.com/pdf/pdf-optimization-reduce-size-1.aspx
To me, it is way too pricey (US$ 570), but maybe it's a viable solution to you. It has  watched folder workflows, therefore it can be handy for your purposes. You can download a demo and even test it online (the resulting PDF is watermarked).
I submitted a file to their online testing page and were impressed with the results: a 1.5 Mb original PDF resulted in a 925 Kb file (while an Acrobat "optimized" file ot the same sample PDF turned out to be _bigger_ then the original). What makes it even more impressive: in the online test I deselected ALL the image downsampling settings, to force the optimized PDF to keep the original image quality and resolution. Then, in Acrobat, I exported the images from both the original PDF and the optimized one, and compare them in Photoshop. They were not identical, but the difference is pratically imperceptible. I guess that applying downsampling to the test will result in even smaller PDFs, but I didn't test this.
Anyway... I don't have any affiliation with those guys, and I don't have either the need nor the money to buy this product. I'm only sharing these thoughts because they may point you to other ways to find a solution. The above mentioned application seems to be very efficient. If you can afford it, then I think it deserves a try. If not, you can search the Web for plugins or other tools that can fit you needs and budget. Acrobat/InDesign approaches are not the only way to go.

  • Font Setting for PDF

    Hi Experts,
I am downloading the PDF format of the smartform through cprojects. In the smartform I have used my own Z style which uses ARIAL as the font. But when I view the PDF format of the smartform, the font is taken as ‘Courier’.  The Document property of ADOBE READER shows ‘Courier’ as the font rather than ‘Arial’. Please provide any settings for PDF/smartform if required to get the necessary font.

  • PDF Output Settings for Word Email Merge?

    Hi all,
I'm using Acrobat X's integration in Word to do an email merge of PDFs. There are images in my template that need their quality maintained. So far, I've been unable to find a setting that affects the "Merge to Adobe PDF" script.
I've created a new PDFMaker Settings > Conversion Setting that uses all the highest image-preserving settings I've found to change from my research. This includes turning off downsampling and compression. When I simply print to PDF or Save As PDF, the image comes out perfectly. When I Mail Merge to PDF, the image quality is lost again.
Where can I adjust the settings for the script that merges to PDF to preserve the image quality?
    Thanks for any help!

Found a workaround, but it does not answer my original question.
My images were in PNG format (which I had intended to use for its transparency). PNGs appear to not handle well in the PDF mail merge. Testing with JPGs, I found they retained much more quality, so I ended up using my Snipping Tool to save the images (with the background seen through the transparent parts) as a JPG, then swapped those images into the document.
Very sloppy workaround, but it got the job done!

  • Why is the scan size of our epson 15Mb for PDF using image capture?

    Hi All-
This has been plaguing us since Snow Leopard when we lost the Epson Scanner tool from Epson to Image Capture scanning using our Epson 835 Artisan.
PDF sizes are ridiculous using Image Capture.
For example, 3 pages of text using Image Capture =
         15Mb
Using the same printer, same 3 pages and the builtin Epson Scanner (from the printer panel) and a USB stick =
         1.2Mb
This has been happening since the SL upgrade (as mentioned) but I had hoped that Epson/Apple could get their act together on the Epson drivers for ML.  Seems not to be the case.  It is kind of a drag to have a Network available Scanner only to have the built in software be a bum steer.  Not only that, but no relief from Epson since their Scanner program (as bad as it was UI wise, but at least you got a mail-able document) has been discontinued...
    Any ideas?
    jp

This doesn't answer the question but it is a workaround.
How is the quality if you do this:
Open the PDF in Apple Preview
    Choose File/Export
In Export, choose PDF format with the Quartz Filter option "Reduce File Size"
If it's ugly, there's a way to adjust the compression settings by using Apple ColorSync Utility to make a modified copy of the Reduce File Size filter with different settings. By playing with this I was able to start with a 7.1MB PDF scan from Image Capture, and export variations based on different Reduce File Size settings:
5.3MB (JPEG Max) - looks great
188KB (JPEG Min) - looks good as the 5.3 MB copy actually
40K (Automatic) - too blurry to be usable
If you were to perfect your own compression filter you could just export each PDF through Preview after scanning it, or presumably you could build some kind of drag-and-drop conversion utility in Automator although I don't know anything about Automator.
It's a workaround because I could not determine a way to apply a Quartz filter from Image Capture itself when saving a PDF.

  • Settings not saved for PDF

Hi, I'm using Presenter 8.01 build 260 (I installed the 8.02 update but it doesn't seem to have changed anything). All seems to be working fine when I publish to My Computer, but when I go to Adobe PDF and try and modify any of the settings there (including the path, audio and image quality), those changes aren't displayed or saved. It displays CD Quality and High (image quality) along with the default path, no matter what I select. Would anyone have any idea what I can do to get lower quality (and therefore smaller) PDFs?

  • External Adobe Reader for pdf, not saved in settings

    I'm using Firefox v32.0.2 (with Adobe Acrobat 11.0.9.29 Plug-in) on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.
Using the Adobe plugin for very large pdf files results in a stalling browser, sometimes for minutes.
Switching over to the external Adobe Reader in the mimetype settings works ok, but only for the current session.
After restarting the browser, the setting for pdf files is back to the Adobe plugin.
Indeed, setting "Preview in Firefox","Always ask","Save file" is stored in mimetypes.rdf,
but setting the external Adobe read is NOT.
By now my workaround consists of deactivating the Adobe Plugin; then pdf files are always opened with the external Reader.
But i would like to know how comes that setting external apps to read pdf files is NOT stored in the settings and therefore lost when restarting firefox.
Anybody know why that is ? bug or feature ?
    Regards,
    Gaston

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (for Linux and Mac Preferences) button.
#In the Options (for Linux and Mac Preferences) window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
