Image edits don't save???

Hello,
I am developing images in lightroom, but when I view the images using a differnt image viewer, my enhancements do not appear. What am i missing?
Thanks, Jordan

This is a a complex issue, David, and unfortunately it's not as simple as that. Monitors don't display images the same way, and while there are ways to handle that within imaging sofware like LR, most web browsers (other than Safari) are not color-managed nor do most users have accurately calibrated monitors.
The short version is that if you have a calibrated monitor (using a Spyder or some other hardware device), and you export to sRGB color space, you've done pretty much all you can do.

  • Photo-size edits don't save

All my other edits---color, contrast, effects, &c, all render and save when I hit Done or click another photo, but the Change Size slider edits don't seem to save: when I come back to the photo it's the same size as it was originally. And of course there's no "save file as" command. Can anyone comment or help---

    John:
If you're referring to cropping a photo you have to hit the Crop button after setting the crop area. Just hitting the Done button will not save the crop.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • ICal (Lion) before synching, when creating a NE in Month view, edits don't save or if they do I also get a ghost NE that I cannot delete

When I am in Month view and double click to create a new event, then edit the name and duration of such and click done, most times it does not save it or it appears to save it, the name changes but when i click away, it reverts to a blank New Event. Sometimes it will save the event as edited but then it will also create a blank New Event on that same day that I then cannot delete.
I do synch with my iPad through iTunes BUT I have not synched for over a month now and this is happening with new events I am creating since the last synch.
    Any suggestions most appreciated.

    Hello Mujno,
To fix this issue, you need to determine how you are navigating between pages. Are you navigating between multiple pages within a page (like html iframe) or navigating from one page window to another. The Frame control helps keep track of
    the page navigations.
Here's what you can try per scenario:
    1) Navigating between pages within a page
    - You would have to include a frame control on all pages that use your reusable class. The frame control would be a container for any page that you want to navigate and display the content. I doubt this is what you are doing but figured it's worth mentioning.
    - You can use the "this.Frame.Navigate(.....)" after including the frame control on the page. Note that "Frame" is the name of the frame object.
    2) Navigating from one page window to another
    - You can navigate to another page from your reusable class by instantiating a new frame from the current window.
    Frame rootFrame = Window.Current.Content as Frame;
    rootFrame.Navigate(typeof(Object), Object);
Let me know if this helps.

  • ALL ICLOUD ADDRESS BOOK EDITS DON'T SAVE

Any and all changes I make to Address Book Entries are rejected, both on my MacBook desktop and on iCloud.com.
In the Address Book OSX Lion desktop app, any Edits I make disappear a few seconds after clicking "Done".
On iCloud.com, any Edits I make give me the error "your changes to this contact couldn't be saved because of a server error".
Edits made on iPhone/iPad work, but don't seem to sync to iCloud.com or desktop Address Book.
All other iCloud sync items (iCal, Bookmarks, Mail, Photo Stream, etc.) seem to work just fine.
I have signed out of iCloud on my MacBook entirely, thus deleting all iCloud data from my computer, and let it repopulate from the iCloud servers; the same problems persist.

Hi. Both preview and image capture aquire the scanner and displays the image overview. But when proceeding

Maybe some prefs file is corrupted. Tried removing the com.apple.Preview from ~/Library/Containers, but didn't help....
    What to do???

Not sure if this is relevant:
    1) TWAIN-BRIDGE is installed otherwise mavericks won't talk to the scanner.
    2) recently added an HP printer (no scanner). Shouldn't conflict with the scanner driver, but then again.....

  • Retouch edits don't save

I'm having a random issue where I do some retouching on a photo, exit the program, load Aperture again and some of the retouches aren't there anymore.  It even says the same number of retouches were done, but it isn't done on the drawing.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Aperture 3.4.5
    OS X 10.8.5

Perhaps there is a problem with your Aperture library. Is the library on your system drive or on an external drive?
I'd check, if the Retouch brush is working more reliably, when you are using a different library. Create a new test library (File > New > Library) on your system drive and check with a few retouches. Do these retouches stay?
If a new library works well, try the Aperture library first aid tools on your current library:
To launch the Aperture Library First Aid Tools:
Quit Aperture, if it is running.
Hold down both keys ⌥⌘ together firmly, and continue to hold them down, while you are double clicking the library icon, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.  Select "Repair Database".  This may take a while for a large library.
I'd also run "Repair Thumbnails" and "Repair Permissions".
see: Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Post back, if that does not suffice to fix the problem, or if you are seing the same problem with a new test library.

  • How do I save Lightroom image edits in source file?

My experience with the trial version of lightroom is very positive in terms of the convenient and powerful capabilities for editing images and the associated metadata.  But I can't find a way to save the "develop" edits to images into the source file for the photo I am working with.  So far, I am able to save the metadata into the file but not the image editing.  From what I read, I fear this is not possible without silly round about exporting to new files then copying / moving multiple copies around, etc. Without this ability, I am pretty sure I will not purchase lightroom and will miss out on all the powerful features.  Without an OPTION that turns on the equivalent of a SAVE button, managing my photos collection would be a nightmare.
So my question is: How do I save the edited (i.e., developed) version of a photo back into the same file where the original photo was stored?
Please, please spare me all the reponses telling me how stupid I am for wanting to do this and that the cognisenti and professionals would NEVER do this.    But please just tell me there is a secret place to turn on this option in lightroom.
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same requirement to save in JPEGs files all non-metadata edits performed in Lightroom, in order to share modified pictures without duplicating files. By the way, I think it’s going to be more and more required by casual Lightroom users, as people get used to instant photo sharing in many situations where quantity matters more than quality
Here’s a nearly automatic (at least, scalable) solution that works, although it slightly lowers the quality by re-compressing the original pictures.
    Once for all:
Download and install the wonderful Lightroom plugin “jf Run Any Command”, provided as donationware by Jeffrey Friedl here: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/run-any-command. This “export filter” plugin allows you to run a command of your choice with each exported file, as part of the export while it’s going on. (You may also browse Jeffrey’s blog to find many other useful and beautiful things.)
In Lightroom, pre-define an export settings as follows:
Export to the hard drive, to the original picture folder, without adding the exported file to the catalog
Name the exported file “EXPORTED-{Filename}” (or anything different from the original file name)
JPEG format, 76% quality (see An Analysis of Lightroom JPEG Export Quality Settings at http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/jpeg-quality)
    Keep all metadata
Here’s the interesting part, the Run Any Command settings:
Command to execute for each exported picture: copy "{FILE}" "{Path}\{LIBRARYFILENAME}" (this replaces the original file with a copy of the exported file)
Command to execute upon export completion: del {FILES} (this deletes all exported files).
NB: One could wonder why not directly export with the original file name and silently replace the original files (I believe Lightroom would allow this). It’s just a matter of error handling: in case the export goes wrong, no original file is changed at all.
The easy part: each time you want to save edits:
In Lightroom, select the pictures to save, and export them with the pre-defined settings. You're almost done. The JPEG files are ok, but inside Lightroom you see the modification effects doubled, as their specifications remain in the catalog database and they apply on modified JPEG instead of the original files.
While the entire set of "saved" pictures is still selected, in the Develop module switch Autosync on and click Reinit to erase all modification specifications from the catalog for all pictures, then press CTRL-S to write down to disk any metadata updated by Lightroom -and accept if required to confirm that Lightroom values should replace externally set values.

PS: Papa Ben, I'm curious about the decision you  finally made

  • My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module.

My version of LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure, highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X 10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

    Happy New Year!
The Develop panel Tone settings in your Dec 31 screenshot show both the Highlights and Shadows controls set to negative values (-48 and -19). For most images (such as this model shot) they should be set to opposite values (-Highlights and +Shadows). To try and duplicate your issue I used negative values for both of these controls with a similar high contrast image. I noticed that the Shadows control becomes non-linear when both the Highlights and Shadows controls are set to negative values. As I moved the Shadows control from a positive value the Shadows clipping indicator comes ON as expected. Moving the Shadows control to a value caused the clipping indicator to turn OFF and moving it further negative caused it to turn back ON again.
The following screenshots demonstrate the issue with only Highlights & Shadows controls applied as shown.
The Highlights & Shadows controls set just to the threshold of extinguishing the clipping indicators.
Moving the Shadows control toward negative causes the Shadow clipping indicator to come ON (as expected), but at-13 it goes OFF again!
Moving the Shadows control further negative causes the Shadows clipping indicator to come back ON at -33.
This is probably normal behavior for the PV2012 Image Adaptive Tone controls as they were not designed to be used way (- - or ++ Highlights & Shadows). The PV2012 Tone controls all interact with each other, which is why it is suggested to adjust them from the Top down starting with Exposure. For most images using -Highlights and +Shadows of near equal value produces good results.
I still can't duplicate the change in clipping indicators after selecting another image, so it may be unique to certain camera models and/or lighting conditions.
    SUGGESTION
Try one of the image files that exhibits this issue using the following PV2102 Tone control adjustment procedure:
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast
If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.
If the issue persists I suggest Exporting an image to DNG file format with the settings that exhibit the issue and post it to Dropbox or other file download site.

  • Images edited in Photoshop not showing up correctly in Lightroom after saving

    Hi,
I recvently got Adobe cloud and upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 4.  Since the upgrade I have been having issues with Lightroom not correctly displaying images edited in Photoshop.  Instead of the photoshop image it creates a new jpeg and displays that in the library.  the PSD does not get loaded into the library.
I am taking a jpeg from my library and shoosing the edit in Photoshop function.  I am selecting edit a copy, but have tried it with original and with edit a copy with lightroom adjustments as well with the same results.
In Photoshop I am duplicating the base layer, upscaling the image, running some filters, adding dsome adjustment layers.
I save the image in Photoshop format back to the original folder where the initial jpeg was in the Lightroom library.  I save it with maximize compatibility on.
When I go back to Lightroom, the catalog displays two files, the initial jpeg and an identical copy to it, NOT the new photoshop file with alterations.  If I go to the folder the images are housed in in Finder using the show in Finder command both images link to the same original jpeg.  The photoshop edited file is there in the folder but does not show up in Lightroom unless I drag and drop it.
I have turned off all filters and made sure the sort is sorting by name.  The image does not automatically show up in Lightroom after editing.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help!
PS. I did search the topic and there are threads from 2007 and lightroom 2 but their solution was to start from scratch essentially and I have a carefully tagged, starred, and labeled catalog of 30,000+ images and really don't want to do that

Images that are edited in Photoshop will be displayed automatically in Lr only when the image-file saved in Photoshop is the same as the one opened from Lr.
You say you open a JPG from Lr, then edit it in PS by - among other things - adding some layers. Layers are not supported in the JPG-format so you have to either save it as a psd or as a jpg-copy.
In either case this is not the same image file as the one opened in Lr, so it will have to be imported into Lr to show up. If you would flatten your image after editing in PS and then do a <save> to your JPG - not a <save as> - it will show up in Lr.
PS: the only exception is when you open a Raw image from Lr in PS and you save it in PS in the file format specified in Lr for external editing. The saved file will automatically show in LR.

  • A different version of the problem loading raw images edited in LR 3.3 to CS4

I have recently upgraded LR2 to LR3 (now up to 3.3). I have CS4 extended and ACR 5.7. Haven't printed for some months now because I have moved overseas (UK to Malaysia) until yesterday. The printing was a disaster because the colours printed are not as the finished print files. So I have been investigating (calibrated my monitor etc) and then I noticed any LR3 edited Nikon raw file when edited in CS4 carrying across the LR3 settings was so bad and very different to the LR3 version. The nice vibrant LR3 image was dull with inaccurate and toned down colours as though a piece of grey glass had been put in front of it.
So I have read as many of the forum questions on the related issue and have not found an answer or more to the point a solution. I run a MacPro with the latest Snow Leopard OS but all of the fixes I have tried don't change the problem. Is it a compatability problem or an error by me due to some obscure setting or something else? Never had the problem with LR2 and the same Photoshop CS4 software.
I also lost most of my LR2 edit setting for a good percdentage of the edited files when I upgarded to LR3. Don't know if this is related or another problem as now I have to redo all of the files that have lost their edited changes.
I would appreciate any help in solving this/these issues.

The question posted by me has not been answered and I am pulling my hair out trying to have my Lightroom/CS4 image processing work flow that has worked for nearly 2years back to normal.
I might as well not have lightroom as opening a lightroom 3.3 edited image in CS4 removes all of the editing done in lightroom. This appears to be true since I upgraded to v 3.3. As one person who posted in another theme suggested I tried saving a Tiff of the lightroom changes which I did via Nik Efex (I do not know how to save a raw file as a Tiff in LR as I don't do it as part of my normal workflow) but it reverted to the totally unedited version of the raw file when it opened in CS4.
Is there a problem with LR3.3 that Adobe are keeping quiet on. There was no warning when I picked uop the 'updated software' message when I opened LR a short while back. Now I am unable to use either as the processing route I use in LR is very fast compared to CS4 (in my view) and I do not have the time to completely change my work flow. I could revert back to LR3.2 but that may lose all of my editing and cause me no end of problems.
As this is an Adobe forum I thought these problems would be discussed with a lot more answers.

After I have edited the image- I move the image back to the main EDIT screen and then save as a Jpeg File in another folder.
The problem I am having is, when I then go back to the Organiser, I cant open the unedited original RAW image again, not sure why this is?

To be sure I understand your workflow, I'll put it in my own words...
    - You select a raw file in the Organizer, and you choose to edit it in full edit/expert mode (that depends on the PSE version).
    - The file opens in the specific dialog panel of ACR, with its typical sliders
    - When you have done your edits there, you can either be satisfied with them (case 1) or want to do further editing in the PSE editor with layers or other tools (case 2)
    - case 1  - you simply click 'Done' and you are back in the organizer. The thumbnail is updated to show the edits.
    - case 2 - You click 'Open' and the file opens in the normal editor mode of PSE. You do further edits, and you save the result in the format and the folder you want. When you close the image in the editor, you get back to the Organizer. If you have set your 'save as'  with the right checkbox, the new jpeg is stored in the the Catalog as a version set.
Your problem seems to be that once you have edited your original raw file, you don't see it in its original state without the edits ?
If so, in the bar just under the tabs, you have a menu on the right (4 bars icon). You just set the choice to camera raw defaults, and you are shown the original raw image without your edits. Note that if you choose 'Shift + Open', you open a new copy without changing the previous settings saved in the xmp sidecar file.

  • Edit "JPEG" then "Save As" is destructive ????

Having searched around I can't find an answer to a simple question. If I open a jpeg and edit it "with or without" layers, then flatten (In the case of layers) the image and select the "Save As" command and rename the file or select "As A Copy", will my original jpeg suffer from and adverse effects if I don't save the original file ???. I keep hearing about destructive editing and layers etc. I have tried editing the same photo three times without saving the original and the file size is the same, suggesting that its non destructive, but would like a definitive answer. Thanks in advance

Generally speaking, saving as a JPEG causes a lossy compression of the data.  So as a rule, any save of a JPEG file results in degradation.
If you talk about Photoshop only, then yes. But "generally speaking": no, this is not universally true.
There are a number of modifications that CAN be done losslessly on a JPEG file (i.e. without decompressing and recompressing the data, thereby preventing a reduction of image quality due to generation loss):
    rotating (lossless)
    flipping (lossless)
    cropping (lossless)
canvas enlarging, i.e. adding a frame (lossless)
grayscaling (lossless except for the [intended] loss of chroma information, i.e. the operation does not add jpeg compression artefacts and thus is equal to converting a color image to a grayscale image in lossless format, such as png)
editing (lossless re-saving of entire jpg image except modified MCU blocks. This comes in handy e.g. for red-eye reduction!)
MCU block rotating, flipping and moving (lossless)
Many programs are capable of lossless rotating and flipping of jpeg files, whereas the other lossless operations are less frequently found.
Photoshop is NOT capable of any of the above lossless operations.
modifications which do not change image pixels:
optimizing the Huffman tables of a JPEG file to increase compression (lossless)
converting between progressive and non-progressive JPEG format (lossless)
Note: Lossless rotating and flipping requires the image size to be a multiple of 1 MCU block (i.e. 8x8 for a jpeg image without chroma subsampling, 16×8 for 4:2:2 subsampling and 16×16 for 4:2:0) as the top and left edge of a JPEG image must lie on a block boundary. When a losslessly cropped JPEG image's bottom or right side does not coincide with a block boundary, then the rest of the data from the partially used blocks will still be present in the cropped file and can be recovered.
lossless editing (e.g. adding of text):
    1) original JPEG image
    2) edited + losslessly resaved JPEG image
    3) comparison
    white: identical pixels
    black: different pixels
lossy editing in Photoshop (e.g. adding fo text):
    1) original JPEG image
    2) edited + saved in Photoshop
    (JPEG, max. quality 12)
    3) comparison
    white: identical pixels
    black: different pixels

  • Edits done in ACR don't show in LR 2

I like to use both LR2 and Bridge 2 (PS CS3/Bridge) and all edit that I make in straight ACR 4.5 do not show in LR2 but the ones I make in LR2 do show in Bridge and when I open that image in ACR.
What setting do I need to change in either ACR or LR2 to make the edits done in ACR show up in LR2.

In ACR you have an option to save the adjustments to sidecar files (default) or a centralized database. At least it used to be so. Make sure the adjustments are saved to sidecar files.
Also, in LR you have to read metadata from files - the adjustments won't load automatically from those .xmp sidecar files.
