Image file soooo large

Question

I made a 2 hour movie in iMovie and burned it to a 4.7Gig Verbatum DVD-R. I wanted to save it as an image file in case i needed to make more copies later but thought I'd try it first before deleting the project. It seemed to go fine but the file size is now just over 6 Gig and won't fit on the 4.7 DVD-R When I tried burning it to an 8.5 Memorex DVD+R DL it stops playing at the same one hour mark ( in both my sony DVD player hooked to the TV as well as in DVD player on my iMac G5.)
Any ideas?
PS I don't know at what speed it was burning at. The DL disks say 2.4 X do I assume the iMac automatically does the right thing? Can I control the burn speed in iDVD?

My guess is you need to back to the project info window and set the project to "single layer" and try making another disk image.

If you wish to burn a single-layer DVD in one of the Double-Layer-supported SuperDrives, select the 4 GB (Single Layer) option in the Project info window in iDVD.
Apple says using the disk image route for DL disks doesn't set the layer break appropriately, and should not be used for DL disks.
You should only create Double-Layer disc images for testing purposes (it is only an option if you have a new SuperDrive installed). Burning those disc images to a DVD using a utility outside of iDVD will not set the layer break according to the DVD specification and may result in playback issues.
