Image for puppet warping disappears

Today I went to puppet warp a layer, and as soon as I placed the first pin, the image part of the puppet warp disappeared - only the mesh was visible. I can't figure out where to put pins or adjust my layer if I can't see the actual image!
Have been using puppet warp with my current system config for a long time with no issues, and had, in fact, puppet warped several things just a few minutes prior with no issues. I have tried after restarting, using hardly any system resources, and with all other layers visible, and hidden. No matter what I try, as soon as I place the first pin, only the mesh remains and I can't see what I'm trying to warp at all.
Please help!

Hi c.pfaffenbichler,
I did a little more testing - I had previously changed my expansion only small amounts, but if I change it to the maximum, the chain reappears at the edge of the mesh. I can then pin and warp the item, but when I apply the transformation, the results don't match what I see during the warp. It's as if it is warping the chain at its original position, but showing it to me during warp as if it is in a different position.
starting warp with one pin on the chain:
increasing expansion - you can see the original pin where the chain actually is:
what I see during warp - i can definitely see it warping:
after warp is applied - it doesn't look anything like what I did during warp:

• CS5 Puppet Warp Problems

I'm new to Photoshop and I'm using the Classroom In a Box book and disc. I'm on lesson 6 and learning to manipulate an image with Puppet Warp. This is the lesson with the selection of a person and you are moving just the head into a new position. When using puppet warp I'm having problems with only a portion of the image moving. This is the selection with no pins. The mesh keeps the correct outline but as you move the object using a pin located on a axis of a oblong section half of the object does not move. In this lesson it's the back of the guys head that stays stationary but the face and front of the head does move. This makes the person completely distorted. Can anyone tell me what I'm donig wrong?

Hi Joy and welcome to the forum
You need to copy the person you are warping to a new layer so that they move without dragging the background with them. But I tyhink you might have done that?
Those parts that you want to lock in place need at least two pins, and preferbly three pins. Then you should be able to select the pin you want to rotate around, and move the the entire head. Pupet Warp is not really that easy to master at first, so try lookiing for some additional help. Video tutorials are a good choice. This was the first hit I had with Google, and it does the job:

• Puppet Warp-style effect for animations?

Hi everyone,
I am new to After Effects, and I want to use it to make animations that I can later on play back in an interactive way.
What I basically want, is to project an animation onto a physical shape with a beamer. This shape will have a certain profile and relief, so a "flat" animation will look pretty weird (it is not a flat surface). I want the animation to look smooth and consistent, so I quess I should morph the pixels of the animation. (fore-shortened parts for slanted surfaces)
I know there are (non-animating) effects in Photoshop like transform, Puppet Warp and alike. But I would like to apply this transformation to the entire animation, instead of a single frame/image.
My question is: is it possible to morph an entire animation in a Puppet Warp-ish way?
Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Jeroen

Okay, thanks! Should have tried out some effects before I posted the question here. Apologies. Warping an entire animation is rather easy: I just make an animated gif that would look good on a flat surface, and then I apply a mesh warp or some effect like that to the layer on the timeline. In this case, I warp without adding keyframes, so the animation is warped in the same way throughout the animation.
Lesson learned: first dive into the software, THEN look for relevant questions and ask one..

• For the second time today images in Firefox have disappeared and, as I was Sincing two computers at the time, now they BOTH have the same problem.

Earlier today, the images on Firefox completely disappeared. Nothing I did fixed this issue; not restarting in Safe Mode, not disabling individual add-ons, nothing. No other browser was affected. After a little over an hour of this, the images suddenly came back with no changes from me. A little less than an hour ago, the same issue started happening, this time, though, I was using Sinc to transfer data to another computer and now both of them cannot display images in Firefox. Please fix this.

Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the permissions.default.image pref on the about:config page should be 1.

• Puppet warp problem with selection

Hi,
I have a new problem that I didn't have in the past:
when I select a part of the photo and I click on Puppet Warp, the whole photo is selected for warping and not just my selection.
I'm using CC 2014 with all latest updates (on OSX Maverick).
Thanks, Kris

Hi,
In this example I made a selection of her hand, then tried to do puppet warp but then the entire image is selected.
When I start placing the first pin, the selection of the hand immediately disappears, and finally, when I want to drag the pins to warp things, the entire image is warped.
When I did exactly the same thing in the past, only the selected hand was warped.
Thanks for the help!

• Inexplicable behavior by Puppet Warp crashes Photoshop

I am running Photoshop CC 2014.1.0 (release 20140730.r,148 x64) on Windows 8.1 with an AMD quad core processor and AMD E1-2100 APU with AMD Radeon HD 8210 Graphics Card. I have installed the latest driver version, 13.152.0.0. Yes I did. I always have my drivers up to date & in the right way. Even Audition cc seems to crash at startup on the 2014 edition. Also noticed that that as I started working with flash the preview lags a lot and the cursor lags too.
Pretty disappointing.

• Severe Puppet Warp bug

I have been having this issue with certain uses of Puppet Warp and I'm not sure if it's how I'm using, the settings I have for the warp or my computer.
It happens on two different MacBook Pros with 8GB of RAM, on Mac OS X 10.8.4
I will spend about 40 minutes warping a photo converted to a Smart Object so that it looks like it's wrapping around a blanket like so:
This usually works just fine. I can save the file, and edit the photo more as time goes on and nothing is odd... until I save and come back to the file later.
When I open the file and try to edit the photo in the Smart Object, reduce the size of the entire image, or even just double-click on the Puppet Warp filter on the layer panel, it does this:
The pins are way off the board, the image looks like it's split into different parts and the only way to get it back is to Undo any changes. The settings for the Puppet Warp are: Normal, Normal, 2px
The image is 7"x5" at 240dpi.
This doesn't happen with all of my Puppet Warped images, but this one shows this behavior every single time. At one point I went in and recreated the Smart Object and Puppet Warp and it did the exact same thing after I was finished. This happens in both CS6 and the new CC versions of Photoshop.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this and if so, is there a solution?
Thanks in advance!
-Ian

Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn't come up with any one method to fix the problem. I tried different documents, building the asset without masks of any kind, smaller resolution etc. It did the exact same thing every single time.
I finally just settled with using the other Warp transform method since I ran out of time for delivery.
I'll keep a lookout for anything that may cause this in the future, but it sure is frustrating.
Thanks again!

• Puppet Warp - ignore unlinked layer mask

When I am using puppet warp to transform a layer with an unlinked layer mask, the layer mask does not remain in place, it is being warped along with the layer I am working on. This seems to be a bug since the normal transform tools allow the layers to be modified without affecting the mask while it is unlinked.
Grouping the layer by itself and putting the layer mask on the group while I'm using puppet warp to transform the layer works fine and is really not that inconvenient I suppose.
The image I am working on is a large scan of an old map with 12 pages, I'm basically trying to line up all the pages into a seamless image, and so each layer has a mask to hide the margins of each page. I really don't want to have to create a group for each layer just to have each mask stay in place while I'm adjusting the pages. I also do not want to "erase" the margins by applying the layer masks before using puppet warp.
Is this something that will be "fixed" in Photoshop?

I think Puppet Warp is intended to include transparency in the form of Layer Masks, so it seems unlikely that this behaviour will be changed.
You could temporarily turn off the Layer Masks by shift-clicking them.

• Getting better results with the Puppet Warp tool?

In CC 2014, I'm not getting realistic looking results when using the Puppet Warp tool.
1. Is it better to place more pins or fewer ones?
2. Is this tool designed to make very subtle changes to an image or is it realistic to expect big changes to the composition of an image with it?
Thanks.

You are not wrong. Puppet Warp is a bit like Refine Edge in that it is not as intuitive as some of the tutorials would have us believe. I still struggle with it. All I can suggest is picking the best tutorials by going to Adobe TV
http://tv.adobe.com/videos/puppet-warp/
If it is going wrong, rather than trying to make the most of a bad job, start again with better pin placement. If you still end up with what looks more like a boneless string puppet than a real person, use tools like Liquify to put things right. Run a work path around the perfect outline, and use that to make a selection from which to use the clone tool to fix inside the mask, and a layer mask to fix pixels that have strayed outside the ideal profile.
Lots of PW pins are good for anchoring the bits you don't want to move, but less pins are better for the bits you do want to move. Look at photographs that approximate your intended new shape, and use them to work out how the rest of the body (if that's what you are warping) would interact/react with your new shape. Or just mime the action yourself, and see where your other limbs, and the rest of your body should look.

• Bug in Puppet warp

Hi,
I've been having a problem with Puppet warp for some versions now. I thought CC would fix it but it did not.
I use the puppetwarp feature on smartobject mainly but the bug also appears on regular pixel layers as well. I set some pins so the part of the image I don't want to distort don't move, and some where I want the image to distort. All is well, then I distort the image the way I want and all looks like everthing is ok, hit OK. Now on a lot of images, the resulting distortion just chops off some little part of the image, like corners or edges. not a lot, but diffenitly noticable. This makes the feature almost useless to me because I never know if it's going to work correctly or not, and it is mostly NOT working correctly. Anyone else experiencing these cutting part/edge issue with puppet warp?
TIA
Jeff

If the "folding order" of the distortion doesn't make sense, some of the triangles "reverse". This is usually "fixed" by applying excessive amounts of starch to increase rigidity in these sensitive areas. Also many times simpyl changing the number of triangles to create will resolve such issues since it allows to better capture e.g. "tails" that curve in on themselves, forming large, ambiguous, non-convex regions. Likewise, very thin/ fine regions will result in unfavorable distribution of ther triangles. There's some nerdy math going on here.... Well, whatever, it's not per se a bug, more of a limitation. If you use smart objects, you could try to temporarily "fill" or "thicken" critical areas by adding some layer beneath your artwork that you later hide inside the SO once you have a working mesh...
