Image grays over during adjustment

Sometimes when I am in the adjustments tab in Viewer Only mode, the image I am working on will "Gray Over"
Interestingly enough, the histogram changes to represent this as an effect on the image. After some more adjustments, it will go away.
I have no idea what causes this, or what it means, or if it's just a bug.
I took a screen shot of the effect, but don't have a way to post it here. If you know how I can post it, please let know.

Well, after a little messing about, the image is no longer grayed out, and I can't gat it back. I believe the badge you were referring to indicates that I've made adjustments, which I did. I had made adjustments under exposure and white balance. I had also made adjustments to the contrast slider, but then brought it back to 0. Interesting that it shows -0.00.
Anyway, now I can't make it do it.

  • MacBook stuck at gray screen during start up

Lately my 2008 model MacBook has been freezing up. When I shut it down, it starts up just fine, however, the last two times I've shut it down, it gets stuck at the gray screen during start up. The first time, I was unsuccessful with a Safe Boot, however I was successful using CommandOption+PR to reset my NVRAM/PRAM. It has been working fine for the past two days, but it froze again this evening. I tried Safe Booting, removing peripherals, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM and I even was able to repair the disk and the permissions, but still, I am unsuccessful during a start up.
When I did try to "Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X", it said my computer was not able to install 10.5 (I run 10.6) because it did not meet the system requirements.
As a final effort, I tried doing another SafeBoot, this time viewing the status. It has been stuck at a console screen that reads "disk0s2: media is not present...." for about ten minutes now, if that helps at all.
Any advice on how to fix this would be highly appreciated. And yes, I have read the Gray screen article

Your hard drive may be damaged or requires reformatting. You might try this to start:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you still are unable to restart or if DU cannot repair the drive or the SMART status is not "verified" then you can try reformatting the drive to see if that fixes the problem, otherwise you will have to replace the drive.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
And, you cannot do an Archive and Install of Leopard over a Snow Leopard installation. You have to reinstall using the Snow Leopard installer.

  • Help! Why do my images look overly sharp and appear to download?

I recently updated CC and now my images look overly sharp when I'm batching or working at a smaller size. When zoomed in at 50% they look fine. Is there any way to fix this? It's very difficult to work with everything looking so warped at a smaller scale. Also, when I open a file after batching and running an action it appears to "download" line by line instead of just opening. What is going on?

When I am batching multiple images and running actions, I don't want to view them at 100% they are huge files. 24 megapixels, on average 60.5M and 3925x5945 at 300 dpi. That's REALLY zoomed in. I was not having this issue with CC until I updated it and now everything looks warped at a smaller scale. I want to know why it changed and how to change it back.

  • How can I find the node I am dragging over during MouseDragged ?

It seems that while dragging you only get MouseDragged events on the node where the drag originated. I have a situation where a drag starts on one node and ends on another.. I am having a lot of trouble finding a reasonable way to get the node where the drag leads to.
E.g. imagine a UI where I am dragging a "connection" from one node to another. I can't use Drag and Drop (which otherwise would report DragEntered andDragExited events), because during a Drag and Drop I don't get any MouseMoved or MouseDragged events, so I can't draw my connection line interactively.
I was hoping I could get MouseEntered and Exited events somehow during the MouseDrag, but they aren't delivered, and even attaching an EventFilter to the nodes in question didn't work. During the drag all events are reported on the listener registed with the source of the drag, but in the drag event even the event Target is set to the same value as the event Source, regardless of what the mouse is dragged over during the operation.
If there is no way to get the need events, is there a built-in way to get the "deepest" node in a scene given the scene coordinates?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Thanks for the response.
I really think that having target nodes involved with the press-drag-release gesture is important. It seems broken the way it is now. As soon as a drag of any sort begins (MouseDragged, or Drag-and-Drop) suddenly a lot of useful information is unavailable. Why not set the target of the MouseDragged event to what the mouse is actually over? Currently, one the drag is initiated the source and target are fixed forever and no other events are available to find what the mouse is hovering over. (Hmm.. I should check if even the "hover" state is changed on components,as I want my CSS to indicate that a node is the intended destination of the connection that I'm dragging)
The other ugly bit is that now I have to get other objects involved in the operation, whereas before I could just attach event handlers to my nodes, now I need to have a parent involved just so I can see where the mouse is going. I also need to deal with the mouse cursor, which will be giving the user bad feedback, that a drag and drop is happening, when that's not really the concept that I want to convey.

  • Flattening image changes values of adjustment layers

I'm working with CS3 on a Mac OS 10.4.9, 4.5 gb ram. My image consists of 6 adjustment layers and a background layer. 5 of the adjustment layers (all curves) are set to luminosity and 1 color balance layer is set to normal blending mode. When I flatten the image the tonality in part of the image changes. I also tried merging down the adjustment layers one by one into the background layer but the final result is the same. Any suggestions?

Are you looking at the image at 100% of size (actual Pixels)?
It make a difference to what you see on the monitor when you flatten Layers.

  • Create a transparent swap image slice over an html slice

    I have a 990px x 400px page divided into two halves horizontally.
The left slice is a html slice that consists of an unordered list with hrefs to various pages.
The right slice is an image that I want to put some polygon hotspots with each having a swap image behavior to swap an image over the html slice and I am unsure how to put a transparent image slice over a html slice.
    Sure could use some help.
    Terry

You can't overlap slices in Fireworks, as Fireworks needs to have a clearly defined, single image to export. Overlapping slices or hotspots makes that impossible. This means that, for one thing, you can't put polygon hotspots over your left slice.

Yeah you shouldn't use ~ in general. That is a shortcut for "Your home directory."
This is not strictly true. ~ is a "meta-character" in Unix shells -- it is an instruction to the shell to substitute the path to a home directory. It only has meaning in a Unix shell command, and only if ~ is the first character in a file path name. Outside of a Unix shell ~ has no special significance (although other programs might adopt a similar convention).
I don't see any reason why Aperture would be doing tilde expansion, and if it is, it is doing it wrong. "March~May Asia Trip" is a perfectly legitimate name in both Mac OS and in Unix. There is nothing taboo about using ~ in a file name. This behavior (which I can confirm) is almost certainly an Aperture bug.

  • Displaying gray over screens that it should not display. Why

When I go to the following web site using Firefox and select the support button the following occurs.
    1. The support page comes up for about 3 seconds.
    2. And then an old Gray-over screen comes up that takes up about 90% of the Page. Short of closing the page or clicking a link with in the 10% that is showing, nothing can be done to close the gray-over-screen. This Problem does not occur when I use Explorer.
    http://www.wondershare.com/
    3. I almost always get an server error if I try to use active controls that are available.
I believe that this error is being caused by both a problem with Firefox and the Wondershare website. The wondershare people are leaving behind a old files that are not linked in the sub-directory that is used for the linked files. Then somehow Firefox is reading the old files where Explorer is not.

  • [SOLVED] Image going over the size of my TV

I just upgraded my TV to a 47'' panasonic SmartTV from my old LV 32'' one.
I connect it via HDMI for video playback and xbmc use: The video card is a nVidia GT 240
The problem I'm facing is, at 1080p @ 60Hz, the image goes over the edges of the TV, like is bigger than the tv itself, so you lose some inches from each side.
At 720, the image looks to fit right but this is not the desired resolution.
I use nvidia-settings in order to tweak xorg.conf, but I had to add some options by hand for the fonts to have 96dpi.
Can anyone help me to find the solution for this?
I have a windows partition for gaming and when I booted it up for testing i faced the same issues.....
    Thanks!!

The problem is the TV itself. I have no idea why, but regular HD TVs usually cut a few pixels from each side, doing a slight zoom in. This is called overscan. You can usually disable this in the TV settings by setting the image size to "fullscreen" instead of 16/9.
Some quick Googling gave me this article, it seems pretty detailed (I'm learning myself right now why all TVs do this).

Thanks, but, I don't want more software as I have used both Epson and Image Capture. Is there not a solution with existing Epson and Image Capture..?

  • Images printing over double page spreads

    Hi all,
I was just about to order a new book through Aperture, when I looked closely at the PDF and noticed that there was image duplication when an image was placed across a double page spread - the duplication occurs right where the spine would be - about an inch (maybe less) or so of the photo is repeated on both the left and right pages. Has anyone else experienced a problem with this? Is this correct? Perhaps it's just allowing for the binding process. Any help gratefully taken - even more so if you could check your own printed books and see if there are any issues with images printed over a double page spread.
    Thanks,
    GT
PS - rwboyer - I just emailed you privately about this as well, to include an image - sorry if that is terribly rude.

    Hi again,
I've answered by own question (or had it answered by Apple) - DO NOT drag an image box over the spine - it will cause a significant amount of duplication of the image on both the left and right pages. This will be reflected in the print version.
I've suggested to Apple that there should be something that stops users from doing this. In my opinion, it's not good enough that the software interface allows you to do this, only to screw it up at the print stage.

  • Translucent gray over image in thumbnil (grid) view

    See example image below:
one thumbnail looks OK (on left), but other, problem image (on right) has translucent gray layer over image!
The problem images are not in a stack.
If I click the problem image thumbnail it looks normal, but the gray overlay re-appears if I click on anther image.
It shows OK in develop module.
I know this is probably something stupid, but...can anyone help identify what is happening?
    -Colin

Most probably you have flagged the image as "rejected" by pressing "X" on your keyboard.
When an image is flagged as rejected it gets that grey overlay that disappears when you select the image. You can still edit them in the Develop Module.
To delete the "Rejected" flag, select the images with the grey overlay and press "U" or "P" on your keyboard. "U" stands for "Unflagged". "P" stands for "Picked".

  • Image "Jumps" During Adjustment

When I am adjusting an image in Lightroom (in the Develop module) the image seems to grow a few pixels and then shrink back as LR makes adjustments. This seems to happen during most adjustments including Exposure, Black, Brightness, and Contrast. Anyone else seeing this? Not a serious issue at this point as the adjusts seem to work as expected. Just a bit irritating to have the image jump each time an adjustment is made.

    Hi Sean,
I notice that Photoshop seems to process the image in blocks and maybe that is the mechanism PS uses rather than pixel doubling. The time is takes to process all the blocks in the image is insignificant on my machine. For me, the jumpiness caused by pixel doubling in LR is more visually annoying than the block processing used by PS. Tony S_ suggested that is might be possible to use pixel doubling but not have the image jump. That would be one solution if it's possible. I suppose another might be to allow users to select pixel doubling or block processing as a preference.

  • Identifying images that have been adjusted

During the import process from beta to 1.0, all of my images were flagged as having been proceseed with the little +/- badge. Now however, I don't want to go back through every one to find the adjusted ones. Anyone know of another way?

Never use Beta code for production work; software companies, like professional sport franchises will break your heart and spirit every time.
I'm not afraid to trash my previous LR effort because I've been testing Lightroom beta and 1.0 on a separate copy of a subset of my image collection, made just for testing, before I commit to using LR permanently.
I've been continuing to shoot/process with my old workflow and tools until I'm convinced LR is ready to rely on.
Even if I give LR the OK, I'm sure I'll still find bugs, annoyances, limits, but nothing too significant, since I'll have wrung it out well.
