Image Maps & Photo Links

I'm new to Dreamweaver... first site design with css.  I love it.   Doing okay but have run into two obstacles I'm just not adept enough to over come.
Site Name:  twangtowntv.com
#1)  I think I have screwed up my main page template.  Not sure how to fix that so that I can have repeating elements throughout the site update simultaneously once again.  Is there any way to rebuild that page and then reapply the page attributes to my existing site pages?
#2)  I've used image maps and have linked photos to websites many times.  But, for the the life of me, I can't make it happen with the images in my right sidebar.  Nothing seems to work.  I image map them, link them... but nothing... no hyperlinking action!     Right now I have added to each page as part of a Library item.   Thought that might open the flood gate.  Still... nothing.  ANY IDEAS of what I might try will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks... Tim

Have you fixed this, because when I hover over any of the picture links on the right, they point to a new page or go to a different link.
if you are using a template, not sure why you would need to use a library item in the left sidebar, if the links are all going to be the same on every child page??
You can repair the master template page, and have the changes reflect on the child pages, but you'd need to make sure that all the editable regions were the same, otherwise, the child pages won't know where to create any of the new regions and could end up with a mess.

• Can I use an Image Map to link to an SLP

I am working on a project starting with the Desktop Catalog with Homepage layout, and have created 4 additional generic SLPs.  I added an image to the homepage slp and would like to use an image map to link to the 4 generic slps that I created.  But I get an error when running the site and clicking on any of the image map links.  Clicking on the link opens a new window with a "This program cannot display the webpage".  At times I have gotten a script error when clicking the link rather than the This program... message, but I cant seem to replicate that at the moment.
I am able to do a simple hyperlink on the image to an slp, but this, of course, only gives me the ability to link to one of my additional pages....
Any ideas?
John

I did finally figure this out...  it is possible to map to an slp file from an image map...  the trick has to do with how slp files work in RH,and makes sense, sort of, once I got it to work.  When you generate html5, htm files are generated fromthe slps.
When you link to an slp file in a regular hyperlink, during the generation of the site, RH translates the slp refernce to the htm file reference that is generated from the slp.  But for some reason, i.e., a bug IMHO, with an image map, when you link to an slp file, RH does not convert this slp reference to the .htm reference (as it does with normal, non-image map hyperlinks.
So the way to get this to work, is when you create the image map link, put in the htm file name that will be created during generation.

• Image Maps that link to Images

Hi all,
All of my experience so far is in the Microsoft HTML Help,
but I have just started a new project where I think the best
solution for what is required will be WebHelp. I have made a bit of
a start, but I have come across the following problem when
attempting to do something that I have done in MS HTML Help many
times:
I have a jpg image of a light bulb that I add a hyperlink to
in order to link to another jpg image such as a screenshot of what
I am discussing. This way the reader can choose whether they wish
to view the screenshot or not, and the screen isn't dominated by
the large images that I sometimes need to display. The way that I
do this is to create a hyperlink to a file and select the
appropriate jpg image to link to. This works perfectly in MS HTML
Help, but in WebHelp it appears to do nothing (the browser doesn't
even say "Page cannot be displayed"). The status bar of the browser
does display "javascript:void(0)" or something similar though.
Is there further restriction on the types of file that I can
hyperlink to in WebHelp? I have had a look at the RH Help and it
seems to indicate that the only files any help file can link to is
pdf, doc or xls, so I am a little confused.
Thanks in advance,
darkagn
PS I am using RH 6. Cheers!

Rick's suggestion is good..
Another approach is to create a separate topic containing the
image and link from the lightbulb to it as an auto sizing (or fixed
size) popup. I do not apply the project template to the popup file,
to omit the header from the popup window.
Sometimes I put a one-line caption above the image, but
usually the context is clear enough without it.
I use this technique frequently to cover three likely
situations:
1. The user has the application open and can see the screen.
2. The user doesn't have the application open to that screen
and needs the popup.
3. The WebHelp is being used as a standalone guide when the
application is not active, so the popup is essential. (Such as in
an "archive" of current Webhelp guides.)

• Can you create an image map that will link to a different element on the same page?

I have used image maps before and know how to create an image map to link to a new page.  In this case, however, I want to be able to click on my image using an image map and load a new image with text on the same page as the image map.  Is this even possible?  Is there some sort of behavior that allows you to create same-page links, perhaps using AP divs?  I want the end result to be a type of gallery that loads different images depending on where you click on the main image.
Again, I don't even know if this is possible.  Any suggestions on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Go to this site and mouse over the image map of South America.

Is that what you are looking for?
Insofar as linking to a position on the same page, do a Help search (F1) in DW for "named anchors."

• Image Maps Linked to Files in External Projects

Hi,
I'm trying to insert an image map into project A that links
to a topic in project B. Both projects are merged into the same
parent project. I want the linked topic to appear in a popup
window. I can make this work if the topic to which I'm linking is
within the same project...just not when it's in another project.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Amy

Hi Amy and welcome to the RH community.
That is the way that image maps work. If you are using an
image map, the linked topic must reside inside the same project.
You could link to an external file by clicking the down arrow to
the left of the "Link To" field and selecting file, but this does
not allow you to display in a popup. Also if you are using CHM
files, the selected file would have to be the CHM which would open
with the default topic. If you were using Webhelp you could select
the individual HTM file.

• Image maps using Adobe Muse 3.2

I want to know if is possible create image maps (many links in just one image) usign Adobe Muse 3.2. I use transparent rectangles to this feature, but i wonder if there is a better way. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for responding and for your input! This is the website:
http://www.professionaldiets.com
When I UPLOAD TO FTP HOST I receive an error message (below) " /httpdocs does not appear to point to site http://www.professionaldiets.com " even though that's the folder I uploaded to using my previous Web Designing Software. So I select "Ignore" and it publishes the website. It sporadically screws up the placement of the photos. Some of the photos that belong on "Before & After Photos" page end up above the wrong person's testimonial on the "Contest Before & After Photos" page. Also, I have to design the layout with some of the photos on top of their testimonials in Muse to be placed closer to correctly when Published. I've tried renaming the jpegs, renaming the pages... Nothing works!
The photos aren't on the "Master Page" because I don't want them on every page.

• Please help - Dreamweaver Image Map Tool/Outlook for Mac

Hello:
I was wondering if you could help me navigate through an issue I am having with the image map tool.  I have created a design file is PSD, saved it as a JPG, then transferred it into Dreamweaver to link the design to a web page.  However, I would like to embed different links within one HTML file to e-mail out, so I used the image map tool to do so.  However, when I copy/paste the completed HTML into an Outlook for Mac message (Command A; Command C; Command V), the image map/additional links do not transfer over once the file is pasted in an e-mail.  I also tested this with G-mail and the Apple E-mail app, and was not successful.  Please help.

You can't paste images into e-mails.  Use absolute links to images hosted on your domain server like this:
<img src="http://yourdomain.com/images/your_map.jpg">

• Image Maps link not working in Acrobat 8 3D PDFs generated from RoboHelp 7

All of my hyperlinks work when I just generated my RoboHelp
project to PDF using RoboHelp 7 with the new Adobe Technical
Communications Suite (with Acrobat 8 3D). However, the links to
topics within the document didn't maintain from the image maps. I
had originally created flowcharts in Microsoft Visio, exported then
as .gifs, and imported them into topics in RoboHelp X5. Then I
created image maps from the boxes to topics in the RoboHelp
project. When I converted my project to RoboHelp 7 and generated
the PDF, all the links work great, except I don't get the
finger-pointing cursor when I hover over the boxes in the
flowcharts like I do with regular hyperlinks. Can someone please
tell me why? Thanks!

Sigh... and this is why no one like to work with newbies...
Thank you for your help. I am embarrased to admit that this was the issue.

• Is it possible to create a link to a pop-up window from an image map in dreamweaver?

I'm trying to use an image map as my home page. As it is a simple site I want the links on the image map to open in a small 200 x 200 pixel pop-up window.
I seem to only be able to have it open in a new tab.
Thanks for any help!

That site uses Cyber Studio javascript actions. Cyba Studio was discontinued years ago.
If you're code savy enough you can extract the javascipt from the site and the csactions and rebuild to your own requirements. It's not that difficult but you do need to know your way around the code environment in Dreamweaver.
Give us another site link and I'll take a look to see if there is anything more up-to-date code handing these pop_ups.

• Image Map Linked to Text w/in Same Topic (RoboHelp 10)

I would like to create an image map using certain text that resides in the same topic as the image. I do not want the user to see the text when viewing online; I only want them to see the pop-up when they click on the mapped image. I do, however, want the text to print if the user chooses to do so. I've been playing around with bookmarks and conditional flags but can't seem to get it to function properly. Can what I'm trying to do be done?

I doubt this is achievable, certainly not within the Rh interface. You could link the image to a popup but it would have the content of another topic set up for the purpose. As such it would not be included when you print the topic with the image.

• Problem creating several image maps (linking to different pdf files) RoboHelp 8

Hi,
I have a problem creating several image map hotspots (that link to different .pdf files), from the same image using RoboHelp 8 HTML (WebHelp project).
After compiling, the first image map hotspot created, opens the .pdf file correctly.  Unfortunately, when clicking on the other image hotspots, I get an error " Cannot find file...<file path>... Make sure path or Internet address is correct".
All the pdf documents are located in the same folder within the project.
Can anyone help?

Have you added the target files as baggage?

• AS3 Image Map Linking Issue - No compiler errors

Hello,
I've made an image map in Flash using AS3, however it does not seem to be working properly.
The links only work in a strange succession. In order to click all the links you must first click the last link followed by the first link, then the second link. After that the image map behaves as it is supposed to. I'm not sure why this is happening.
It complies without error and aside from the little quirk mentioned above, it works beautifully.
I've checked and double checked the AS, even copied and pasted some code from one button to another to see if it would make a difference, but to no avail.
I am using the code listed below:
button1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, callLink1);
function callLink1 (event: MouseEvent) :void {
         var url:String = ("http://www.google.com");
         var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest (url);
         try
             navigateToURL (request, "_parent");
             catch (e:Error) {
                 trace ("Error occurred!");
Any and all help would be much appreciated, thank you!

I'd second Dan's last point, there is really not enough information here to help identify the actual problem.
What I would suggest is that you put everything into one event handler so perhaps that might simplify working on it..something like:
button1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, callLink);
button2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, callLink);
button3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, callLink);
function callLink(event: MouseEvent):void {
        var url:String;
        switch (event.target) {
            case button1 :
                url="http://www.google.com";
                break;
            case button2 :
                url="http://www.yahoo.com";
                break;
            case button3 :
                url="http://forums.adobe.com/thread/417263?tstart=0";
                break;
            default :
                url="http://www.adobe.com";
                break;
        var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest (url);
        try {
            navigateToURL(request, "_parent");
        } catch (e:Error) {
            trace("Error occurred!");
If you have everything set up in one listener function like that it may be easier to debug and maintain.
