Image or Migrate from external HD

I need to setup over 30 macs in the next few weeks and i want the easiest way to do it.
i have an external HD with "User" folder on it.... can Migration Assistance on boot up see this and migrate from HD? or do I have to do a full install of Leopard on that HD first?
second, what about a disk image... what's the best method.
i need to keep this image updated constantly and distribute to new units we get.
all of the will have same user name, password and network settings.
thank you

A server is only needed if you want to do network installs.
Migration Assistant is intended for moving user folders not entire system installs.
Yes, you can simply clone a default system to an external drive and then clone that system to each of the computers. You can use SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility, or any other utility that can create bootable clones.
As I suggested, however, you should visit Mike Bombich's site. Lots of useful information and tools for what you want to do.

  • Duplicate Songs after migrating from External

I just got a new MacBook and migrated my songs into itunes from my external hard drive. I have a large number of duplicate songs that show up in the application. Is there an easy way to correct this problem?

It would be a good idea since this question is not identical to the one originally posted in the topic if you were to start your own topic on this subject. Somebody may have an answer for you but since it isn't the topic here they will never see your post.
I also recommend you post this question in the itunes forum. There's lots of people there who answer this kind of question all the time, but they run different operating systems from Tiger and almost never post on this forum and will never see your question.
I see the duplicates resolution thing too. It looks like itunes just relies upon artist and name as the criteria. It would be nice if one could activate album as being part of this but I haven't come across it and it might be a good thing to post though the Apple feedback website as a suggestion.

  • Migration from external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
Im planning on upgrading to a MacBook Air 13' from MacBook (Late 06 running 10.7.5)
I would like to know if I unmounted my MB hard drive from the computer and put it in an enclosure with USB connection.
Would I be able to use Migration Assistant on the MBA with selecting Time Machine or other discs? Is this method considered as a 'clone' as I have read in several comments in this forum?
If not, is drag and drop the best option for me if it must be USB connecting method?
What I am mostly interested in moving over from the enclosed HD to MBA are :
Some applications (Hoping I can just migrate and use it on MBA as left off from MB)
Settings for the OS X such as Wifi Passwords,
    iTunes - Music/iPhone back up/iPhone Apps
    Documents
    Thanks in advance!

Your idea of removing the MacBook hard drive and placing it into an external enclosure is not a clone but it will work. A clone is an exact copy of your computer's hard drive. You'd be using the hard drive itself. Since the MacBook's hard drive is easy to access and is a user upgradeable component there's no problem. But I think a better idea would be to purchase a USB external hard drive (assuming you don't already own one) and back up your MacBook with it using TimeMachine (or a clone program like SuperDuper!) and then migrate using it.
After migrating you will have to re-enter your passwords for email and you may have to reserialize a few programs. Depending on how you've been keeping up to date some of your software may need to be updated.

  • Data Migration from External HD to my computer with newly installed HD

Help, my saga continues. I had to have a new hard drive intalled on my year old IMac 24 inch. Just brought it back from the Apple Store and prior to this, they told me to back up my info onto my external and when the new HD was installed I could simply drag and drop my old into my new. Well, tried to do that today when I got home and no go. I have basically an equivlant of a new computer and can't figure out how to get my old data onto my new HD. I have my email prefs, my Itunes library, all of that on the external. Help!

Hi Heather - how did you create your backup on your external drive? Did you make a bootable clone (using software such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper) of your old internal drive? If so, then all you need to do is boot from the external drive (hold down option key on startup and chose the external drive as startup disk). Then you can run CCC or SuperDuper again to clone the external back onto the new internal drive.
If you just drag and dropped your data files to the external drive as backup, then you'll have to first install the operating system on the new internal drive. For that, you need the original installation disks that came with your Mac. Once the system is installed, you can then move your data files back to the internal drive.

  • Missing folders, albums and images when Migrating from iPhoto to Aperture

I have 3,333 image in iPhoto (v.7.1.3). I'd like to import the entire library into Aperture (v.2.1) and use that primarily to edit and organize the images from here on out. Problem is, when I try to import the iPhoto library from Aperture, it only imports half of the images (1,553 images). I tried deleting the Aperture library and re-importing everything but had the same result. Any suggestions would be appreciated -- I'm eager to get started in Aperture after years of iPhoto.

Hope we get an answer - I'm in the same situation as you, though I just went from iPhoto to A2.x on an older G5 tower. I've been debating whether to take the time to go through them, reorganize "better" than they were under iPhoto or wait for a more elegant solution...

  • Migration Assistant didn't migrate from external hard drive.

I selected copy applications and not copy files. It did something for over an hour but I'm not sure exactly what. It did copy MS OFfice which I already installed maybe a few other programs like Bbedit which was good but I need Quicken and Quickbooks apps which I will just reinstall from the CD.
Is there a way to uninstall programs or do you just delete them?
I wanted the email contacts from Mail and also from Entourage. It did not copy those lists, neither did it give me my iTunes music. Shouldn't Apple be able to get those contacts lists and the iTunes merged into the new computer apps? I also need the Quicken and Quickbooks data but there is probably a backup somewhere on the hard drive. I will look for it.
I would be satisfied with my emails and contacts. Maybe it can't do it from an external hard drive? In any case as I mentioned in another post. I had a g4 with a dead logic board so I took out the hard drive and put it in an external drive.
then I got a used g5 and now I want to transfer the address books and itunes from the external drive into the g5. How do I get that? Do I get it from a preferences file? Where is it? Is it in app data or in a plist somewhere?
I need my address books and I would also like to get all my old emails from both programs. THANKS,

The reason those components weren't copied is because they are not in the Applications folder. Those files that contain you mail, bookmarks, Entrourage data, iTunes library, etc. are all located in your Home folder and /Home/Library/ folder. Since you didn't copy any of that they are now missing.
Fortunately, this is not a disaster, but it will require some manual copying on your part. The following will outline what you want to transfer from the external drive:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

  • Populating webi reports with images downloaded live from external sites

I'm writing applications to create different visualizations of my data, and would like the resulting images to show up in webi reports. Specifically, the application that draws the visualization will be deployed to the same java application server as webi. Users will open a normal webi report which will contain something like an HTML <img href="#myhref" /> tag, where #myhref will be a link to a page in my web application that draws a visualization.; Is such a thing possible, and if so, how? Many thanks, in advance.

Nevermind... I think I got it. I created a SQL query that would return the URL I wanted (something like SELECT 'http://server/context?param1=' || field1 || '&param2=' || field2 FROM table", and then modified the resulting cell to be read as an Image URL.

  • Migrating Services From External ITS to Internal ITS

    Hi All,
We are migrating from External ITS 2.0 (SAP R/3 4.6B) to Internal ITS 6.0 (SAP ECC 6). Can anyone tell me on how to migrate services which are there in External ITS to Internal ITS, so that the same External ITS services are visible in SICF or SE80 Transaction.
    Thanks and Regards In Advance,
    Sidhartha Chatterjee

    Hi Sidhartha,
As Klaus recommend, you should start with help.sap.com.
I would also suggest doing a search in this forum, for similar threads like your. There are many of them, with good links and tips.
I think a very good practical start to understanding the internal ITS is to read Durairaj Raja's excellent webblog, "Running your first ITS WebGUI application in SAP Netweaver 04 ABAP Edition", /people/durairaj.athavanraja/blog/2005/08/21/running-your-first-its-webgui-application-in-sap-netweaver-04-abap-edition--nsp

  • Move iTunes library from external disk to internal disk

    Hello,
I am currently using a Mac Mini with an external disk to store my iTunes library as well as all the media files, apps, etc. The library is managed (consolidated) by iTunes and is also organized by iTunes.
I am about to buy the new Macbook Pro and with a 1 TB drive, I wanted to move the iTunes stuff (library, media, playlists, play counts, ratings, everything) to the internal drive of the new MBP.
    My questions are:
Can I do this migration (from external disk to internal disk of new Mac) as part of the Migration Assistant?
In case I can't do the above, what is the best way to do this after the new Mac has been set up?
How do I ensure that play counts, playlists, ratings, album art are preserved as I have spent considerable time setting those up?
I have 3-4 IOS devices syncing to this library. How do I ensure that when I sync them to the new computer/library, they will continue to work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    1. See if this support answers your query http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 and  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    3. Make sure complete intune folder is copied over. The Itunes Library.itl file contains all meta data.
    4. Maybe someone else can make a definitive comment on this. I used migration assistant and was able to sync my ipad and ipod classic without doing anything special.  I presume that it worked because both were syncing to the same library albeit on a different computer.

  • After migrating from old macbook pro to new, aperture is not opening many photo images onboard and on external hard drive

    Is my question out there?
It seems the longer I have Aperture open more and more images become unavailable. There's a dotted line around a blank thumbnail and clicking it may result in prolonged static "loading" symbol and ultimately, if anything else, a message that the file type (which is .jpg, nothing exotic) is not supported. These images are on an external iomega terabyte hard drive. It gets worse. If I go straight to the iomega drive where the images are all listed, selecting one brings up a symbol instead of a thumbnail and double-clicking brings the message that I "do not have permission" to open this file.

No, that shouldn't have mattered necessarily ss long as you moved the folders into the correct spots.
You could start over by throwing all the folders you just moved in back out (could park them in a folder on your desktop). Then, if you want to start over completely, and - important - have the following file on your external - go to Users -> Library -> Preferences: com.apple.Mail.plist. This file contains all your account settings.
Copy that file over to your new Mac.
Throw out that same file on your new Mac (Mail will now think it has never been launched before).
Move the old .plist file into the same spot.
Move your Mail folders into place (and replace any newer folders there, so you will have exactly the same folder setup as you did in the old one).
Launch Mail (keep fingers crossed - it should work!)

  • HT4889 Migrate from MacBook Pro to external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro with no video, external monitor won't work, it's the nvdia chip. Before working on it, I want to back up the Apps, Settings etc. I have the data backed up.  I tried to migrate to my mac mini but it doesn't have enough space so I thought I could migrate to my external hard drive, but I can't see the external... Here are my 3 inital questions:
Can you Migrate from Macbook to external drive....if so, how...migration asst. or disk utility????
When you Migrate from one drive to another, does it overwrite the files on the new drive, in this case my Mac Mini
Can you clone or disk image to an external hard drive, if so, how?

    A clone should work.

  • Upgrading: Migration Assistant & External Firewire Drive w/ Image

Hello, and thanks in advance for your guidance with this inquiry! I am considering upgrading from my PowerBook 12" to a current MacBook Pro 13": If I back up the PowerBook to an image via Disk Utility or SuperDuper and onto an external firewire drive and restore it there, will I be able to then use Migration Assistant to transfer that data to the MacBook-or can Migration Assistant be used only to transfer data directly between the two laptops? Thanks again so much, and a quick reply is especially appreciated since I may be selling my PowerBook tonight! : )
    Best Regards,
    Robert

Migration Assistant offers the option of migrating data from "Another volume" or something like that, which includes external hard drives. I used that option to migrate data from an external USB drive to my daughter's new unibody MacBook last December, when it proved impossible to migrate directly via Ethernet or FireWire connection from her old Powerbook running Panther. We cloned her internal drive to the USB drive using SuperDuper, and then the migration from that drive worked flawlessly.

  • MIGRATING DATA FROM EXTERNAL HDD (PC FILES) TO NEW MBP

I am new to Mac and am in need of migrating all files from my old PC to my new MBP.  All my files are on an external HDD, since I am no longer in possession of the PC.  Is there a quick and easy way to migrate all my files over?  When I use the migration assistant, it is not recognizing my HDD; however, I do see my HDD under 'Devices,' where I can drag and drop files to my MAC.  Needless to say, that may take forever to do.  I would appreciate some assistance.  Thanks in advance!

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.
