Image Persistence a reoccuring problem on 24" iMac
Hello fellows,
For the past few months now I've had problems with Image Retention/persistence. The thing is, I've had things in place for longer without them leaving a ghost, and the amount of time it takes to ghost seems completely inconsistent, and seems to happen faster recently.
The thing is, 3 out of 4 times this has happened (and im not sure about the 4th) happened while I was on my Windows 7 bootcamp partition.
Granted, I do play computer games on my windows partition, but only one time has the HUD of the game actually been what became ghosted, and that was only after an hour or so of gameplay (and the most recent incident)
I'm getting rather worried about my monitor. I know the ghosting goes away after leaving the monitor off, and I do have screensavers and monitor sleep set on both my mac and windows partitions, but it seems to be happening more quickly lately. Could it be an issue with the monitor and Windows 7? And could I get a replacement from Apple? (I bought the iMac last August so I'm fairly certain I've still got warranty)
I'm having a similar problem with my iMac.
I just noticed yesterday that some of my desktop icons are leaving ghost images. Unfortunately, the images are not disappearing after turning the monitor off.
There have been times that I needed to turn off my screen saver, but I don't recall leaving the monitor on for very long. Plus, I thought I understood that image persistence was not an issue with LED monitors. Guess I was wrong.
I've had my iMac for just under two years. I hope there is some kind of relatively easy solution.
It will be interesting to hear from others.

My iMac 27" Late 2012 has Image Persistence Problem
I'm wondering what to do about an annoying image persistence problem on my 27" late 2012 iMac. I got the iMac just a few days ago. Monday actually, so 4 days ago.
It's the 3.4GHz i7, 8GB, NVIDIA 680MX 1TB fusion drive model.
Overall it has become the love of my life, but the image persistence thing is getting harder to ignore. This happens after only a few minutes of use. If I follow Apple's instruction on dealing with LCD image persistence, I can make it go away for a while, but it comes back very quickly.
It is extremely noticeable on a plan dark background. It looks as thought he screen has been left on for a very long time with the same windows open, but it occurrs in less than 5 minutes of use with nothing more intense than a bit of web surfing.
I've read that this is happening a great deal on these new iMacs, particularly teh 27" machines.
While the problem seems to be known to those of us afflicted I don't know if Apple has acknowledged an issue or not.
Here is a sample of the complaints: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1509571
I can make the ghost image vanish by bringing up an all white scree for a minute or so or using LCD Scrub.
I'm wondering if anyone else has foun a solution other than asking for a replacement computer, which Apple seems to be granting on this issue?Avoiding image persistence on Apple (IPS) displays

If you cannot resolve the issue yourself, then return the computer for a replacement. You may do this freely within 14 days from date of purchase, so don't delay. -
Temporary image persistence in a 27inches iMac
Hello guys.
My iMac(27 inches, late 2012) had a strange issue 2-3 hours ago. This is the second machine I got, as the first machine I had received suffered from heavy image persistence and it was replaced.
So, I have had this second machine for six months, without a single problem of image persistence, working very often at it for 12-14 hours in a row.
This evening I was also working at my iMac , having a pdf opened at the left side of the screen for 5-6 hours. When , for some reason, rebooted my machine, I noticed some kind of image persistence with this document. After a couple minutes , it was gone , without really doing anything special.
From this time, I have opened at the same side of the screen for much time the same pdf, rebooted the system a couple of times to see if it will happen again, but nothing noticeable.
Should I really be worried about this fact or it could happened accidentally?
I want for no reason my iMac to be "opened" and repaired , especially the lcd screen , which is really the last part to get access inside the iMac. I think that this machine was manufactured to be as more compact as possible and do not want to get it opened or scratched at Apple reseller's service depar.
With regards,
Spyros.Thanks for your response.
I have already read this article. Everything about energy saving preferences is on default mode.
I just want to know if this is really a hardware issue , which will happen again and again in the future and probably become even worse.
And of course if it is make sense that it happens now, after six months of proper function. I strongly believe that somehow it should have come up during the first days of functioning. Does not it?
Thanks again for your time.

Imac 24" late 2007 with image persistence -- any fixes that worked?
So there seem to be quite a few people with screen burn-in/image persistence on their imacs. I am one and I have tried Apple's solution as documented in:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807?viewlocale=en_US
I've tried the white background for a few nights, no go. I also always had screen sleep set to 10 minutes.
The image persistence I get look like left over text/window borders and smudges much like these:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulbeattie/3672732489/in/set-72157620740779954/
I have also tried jscreenfix and LCDscruber on various patterns for a few days now and I can't get rid of these artifacts.
I suspect heat may be part of the issue. If I leave the imac off overnight and turn it on in the morning, my screen is fine. Wait a bit for it to warm up and the image persistence is back, however, turning up the fans failed to resolve the issue. Room temp is not bad -- about 26c. I've also tried cleaning out dust, but that didn't change anything.
Has anyone with this problem actually gotten it fixed? What worked?
Message was edited by: taii: Just to add, the location is just about dead center and spreads out roughly 4 inches in any direction. This puts it around the hard disk. The hard disk temp is 58c. The CPU and GPU temps are at 49/63c. The power supply is at 78c. This seems a bit high? The powersupply is in the upper left corner though and there is no image persistence in that area.Hello
I don't have any exact figures as how much the temps went up as i didn't monitor it that closely before, as everyone who owns a iMac knows they can get quite hot.
Last night when i checked the temp on the GPU was 78 degrees celcius and i belive that thats a good 8-10 degrees more that it normally was with Leopard.
If i try and hold my hand behind the screen to the left where i believe the power unit is located it gets to hot for me to keep my hand there for more than a few seconds at a time.
I don't have the other numbers available right now but i can post them tonight when i get home.
I also had the problem before Snow Leopard but not as bad as with Snow Leopard. When i was using Leopard it normally took quite a long time for the problems to occur. I almost only got them if i wasn't using the computer and the screensaver or power saver for some reason failed to start, it was also quite easily fixed by just activating the screensaver or powersaver for a while.
My conclusion is as follows:
1. The iMacs has probably always had persistance problems.
2. The iMacs gets quite hot
3. After Snow Leopard the Imacs gets even hotter and this affects the percistance problems so that they grow worse
All this accordign to me is clearly related to the hardware itself, i.e poor cooling, poor quality components and so on, nothing points to this being a user or usage problem and i therefor think that apple should address it accordingly.
I'm in Sweden and my nearest Apple Store is quite far away and getting hold of someone at apple in sweden to discuss this matter with is easier said than done. -
Image Persistence - Image Retention issues - iMac
Hello everyone. When is Apple going to fix all the image retention issues, or as Apple would call it image persistence? I find it to be horrendous that Apple is calling this "normal". There is nothing normal about having an image ghosted or stuck on your display. I hope Apple gets with LG on this and fixes these issues because a fix is long overdue. This has been plaguing iMacs for years now. I have had 2 iMacs in a row that have had this issue straight out of the box. Can anyone tell me why some IPS displays do this and others do not? Is this because Apple is buying junk from LG?

Image Persistence On Late 2012 27" iMacs
Hi.
I'm currently on my second late 2012, 27" iMac. I returned the first one I bought because of uneven color from top to bottom of the display, as well as a very readable image of my browser's address bar that seemed to not want to vanish from the display against a plain dark gray background every time I closed the browser. It was a persistent image after using the browser for only five minutes. It was pretty bad, and I exchanged the computer for a replacement.
The replacement model is much better. The colors are pretty even, and if I leave a web page open for a long time, the ghost image on the display generally takes about ten minutes to fade completely away, against the plain dark gray background that I've set as my desktop wallpaper. On my previous model, the image of the address bar never really left. It was, like... permanently burned in.
I've read an awful lot in these forums about image persistence, and also the help articles that Apple published on this site about it. I'm aware that Apple acknowledges this as normal behavior for their displays.
I still have a couple of days left, where I can return this replacement unit for another iMac, or get a refund. My question to the community is this: Is what I have now, as good as it gets? I'd hate to take this one back, and exchange it for another that's only the same, or possibly worse.
Mostly, I'm concerned about residual artifacts from desktop wallpapers, recently closed application windows, etc., interfering with accurate perception of, say, a photo that I open to edit or something. It's a little worrisome. I don't plan to use blank wallpaper forever, or wait ten or twenty minutes after browsing the web before proceeding to work on graphics.Although I don't own a imac from reading these forums I'd have to say what you now have is as good as it gets. So that leaves 2 options.
Live with it.
Or return it for a refund and move on to some other mac computer or something else. -
HT5455 image persistence problem on Macbook Pro Retina 15"
Is it a faulty or normal behaviour if we see an image persistence after 5 minutes ( less than 15 minutes "Default setting of Energy Saver while using Power Adapter" to sleep/ turn off the display of Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch)?
Today, the Technical support checked my screen using the gray.html and it did not appear. And She said it is a normal behaviour to have an image persistence, because the retina bla bla bla (i don't remember exactly) and just dont leave the laptop too long.
http://r238.local/display/gray.html
Just now after playing a Chess (appx 30 minutes) , and run that test. The image persistence appeared and I guess I need to make appointment again..
Any solution and suggestion?
or We will stick with what the technical support said "Normal Behaviour" ?The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies. -
Image persistence on New 24" LED Cinema Display - Quick Reply needed please
Hi
I have a new 24" LED Cinema display - delivered 14 days ago today (hence needing a quick reply!).
Yesterday I noticed image persistence down the entire left hand-side of the screen - should this happen on such a new display?
Should I return it / take it back?
Thanks for any advice.
For what it is worth the image persistence is the left-hand column of the iTunes window - I can read the entire column from the top where it says "Music" down to the "Selected item" that appears above the album artwork window.
I do use iTunes a lot but certainly nothing out of the ordinary and often in reduced size mode or behind other windows. (i.e it does not sit in the same place all the time).
Since I took the screen out of the box the screen-saver has been set to turn on after 15 mins and the Energy Saver is set to turn the screen off after 20 mins (i.e I have taken screen saving measures).
Finally, I have done the "display an all-white image on the entire display" as per here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807) and after six hours of this the problem has improved, but certainly not gone away.
So, to return, or not to return, that is the question.
Many thanks.
Rob
PS - I bought this online at Apple Store - if I do return it, could I do this in person at physical Apple Store, or do I have to do it online?I've had this same problem on my 24" iMac for some time (it's still under my AppleCare warranty, but it began doing this long ago). I searched these forums a year ago and never found anything about this, so I'm glad I found these posts here today.
I guess it's time to haul mine back into the store. Also I note that my screen has developed some dark areas, as if the fluorescent backlight has become irregular. -
Discolored Display/not image persistence or burn in
I have a late 2007 Intel iMac. I had this problem once before already and Apple replaced the display. I see that it has happened again. There is a random amount of grey discoloration happening on the left side of the screen. Not evident with a white background, but quite evident with a grey background. It does not appear to be burn in or image persistence. I wonder if the small halogen desk lamp I have on the left side (some 8" from the edge of the computer) could be responsible? Anyone offer an explanation for this?
I do have AppleCare and can take it in. I'm assuming I can't fix it myself.I do NOT have a halogen lamp next to my iMac 7,1.
I do have 2 small Bose computer speakers on either side.
I have horizontal discolorations on the left side similar to yours.
LCDscrub http://toastycode.com/lcdscrub/ might fix it, but you will have to buy the software as the trial version is really useless (for obvious reasons).
I am living with the problem until next Summer (AppleCare expires in August 2010) when I will take into Apple for a fix. -
One more 23" image persistence discussion, share stories.
I had one 23" that had a huge line down the middle so I sent it to apple to be repaired.. they put a new LCD on it. Now the monitor had major image persisence problem with this new LCD. So I complained.. They sent me a new one monitor. This new monitor also has image persistence problems.
I have been following apple's guidlines. Here..
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88343
It helps out to getting rid of the image persistence, but once I start working again, and go to a dark gui, where I really see the image persistence, I have to go back to the white screen, again, and keep doing this over and over....
Do I have to spend most of my work day looking at a white screen? Or will image persistence eventually get bettter? Meaning will I eventually not have to look at a white screen when switching apps???
dual 2gig G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)I have a similar problem.
ghosting. started out of the box.
at least here there's a privacy/security issue as well with various people using accts on the same machine, the ghosting remains from acct to acct. so if admin logs in then logs out and user logs in, admin's screen ghost remains visible.
I'm hoping when I get my replacement it will be a 2006 model as it seems on this board that people having this problem are those who received monitors made in 2005, as is the case with mine.

I'm using the newest Time Capsule (2T) and I just got this error.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/James Kranz’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
It has been running fine (so it think) since I got it a few months ago. This is your Time Machine backup image on your Time Capsule or other networked storage device that you are using for your backups. To clear this problem, try restarting your Mac, but if that does not work then restart your backup device. Doing these should clear the process that is usiing the bundle, and allow your Mac to properly attach it for use.

23" Cinema with image persistence after a few minutes
Hi,
I've got a 23" Cinema Display which I purchased in August 2004. It's been fine until about two weeks ago. It's now suffering from pinking down the left and right edges and very bad image persistence.
If I've got a Safari window open for example, after about three to four minutes I close the window, a faint image of the window is still visible on the display. If I leave the Safari window open for say, 10-15 minutes and close it, I can then actually see the icons in the Toolbar and read the text from the bookmarks bar! The image will slowly fade over the next four to five minutes. Of course, this doesn't just happen with Safari windows, it happens with all windows, the Dock and icons on the desktop.
Now, I'm aware of image persistence on LCD's but this is ridiculous. It shouldn't happen after just a few minutes! I don't have AppleCare on this display and my local Apple reseller, where I purchased the display, told me it'd probably be cheaper to buy a new one than have it repaired. I just called Apple, they told me the same thing...
I'm not happy about this. I don't expect to pay £1500 for a display to do this after 20 odd months. I've had other cheap LCD's that have lasted for years without a problem. I see other people on the forums here are having the same problems, even from new, so it would appear to be a design fault with the 23".
Apple needs to acknowledge this as a fault with this display and replace them free of charge.
G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.6)My own 23" Apple Display has a similar problem as well - although it is not suffering from the "Pinking Down" on the left and right sides, it is suffering from the bad image persistance you describe. I have sent the display in three times for various issues, and mentioned the afterimage all times, and none of the times has it returned back to me fixed (I own AppleCare coverage for it as well).
I agree that Apple has to at least address the issue and inform the customers of the problem.
Something else that has plagued my display is the cracking of the back hinge, which is something NOT covered by AppleCare. It was so bad as to once it actually snapped off the entire screen and it would have fallen to the floor if I had not been there to catch it. I do not know if this is something related just to me as it resides on a glass desk or if this issue agitates anyone else.

Image Persistence on the new 23"
Just returned a 23" to the Apple store, Manchester, UK for the image persistence problem that seems to have started with the screen updates a few weeks ago. We tried another one in the store but that too did the same thing.
Just having the apple home page open for a couple of mins leaves a big black box behind where the new ipod/pirates image is. This doesnt happen on any of the cimema displays we have at work, purchased before the update/price drop.
I can understand why this wouldnt be a problem for watching movies or playing games but having something open for a while, say a black and white image in photoshop leaves impressions of the picture and all the different photoshop pallets and tool boxes once photoshop is closed.
I hope Apple can fix this problem or I can no longer buy these screens for professional work.My ACD has no image persistance. However it suffer from really bad backlight bleed.
Backlight bleed is really only noticable on a dark background. Although if you pay attention you can notice elsewhere too. Like on mine, the top left is really bad. I can see the washout on my app windows.
Basically it is a manufactuering defect where the backlight isnt properly placed and portions of it "bleed" or "leak" washing out those portions.
It is very noticable when watching a widescreen dvd. My black bars are almost completely washed out to a light gray/white color.
To test for it, pop in a widescreen DVD. Full screen and pay attention to the bars. You will know it when you see it. Another way to test is an app called LCD Test which can be found on macupdate.com
When you get that on your mac, load it up and run the dead pixel test. Use these colors to check for dead pixels. The last image is an all black. This is where backlight bleed will be the most evident.
Check out this thread for an example: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2912322?
I just initiated a replacement for my ACD. I will give Apple three chances before I take my cash elsewhere. Hopefully I get a near perfect one this time around.
On a side note, is there anyway to get Apple to send a new display with a label for my old one, and then send that one back? I really dont want to be without my display for more than a couple days. No Apple Store around me either.
I thought I have heard of them doing this before. -
I found my macbook pro with retina has the problem of image persistence. If I open a window for a while, and after I close the window, its shadow will remain on the screen for a while. My computer has been out of the warranty, can I get free screen? I think this is an intrinsical problem of this macbook produced in that period. Thank you.
It is a known issue.
