Image processor defaulting to camera raw settings
I'm trying to process a folder of RAW files. I'm using image processor and selecting the "open first image to apply settings" button. It opens the first Raw file in the folder and I can apply the Raw settings I want. This creates an xmp file next to that particular picture. The problem is, unless there is an xmp file next to each additional file in the bunch, it reverts to the camera raw default settings and does not apply the raw setting that I've selected to the picture.
Is there some way to make sure this doesn't happen?
well, I think I at least found a work around. If I save the settings I want as new camera defaults, it keeps the conversion consistent.

Bridge freezes when applying camera raw settings to large number of files
I have a folder with 32,000 frames from a time-lapse project that I'm doing. I'd like to apply the same camera raw adjustments to all of these files, and so follow one of the two methods below - neither of which are working with such a large set of files:
Method 1:
Select all files, open in camera raw.
Apply changes to the first image
Select all images, then synchronize the changes to all other images.
Unfortunately selecting "Open in Camera Raw..." just leaves bridge to hang. It's using a lot of memory and processor time, so I would assume it's working, but there's no progress bar or similar to indicate that it is.
Method 2:
Open first file in Camera Raw
Apply all changes, and exit camera raw.
Select all files in Bridge, right click on one and select "Develop Settings -> Previous Conversion"
Unfortunately the final step again leaves bridge just thinking. I waited around an hour, closed bridge, but unfortunately when I opened it again there was no sign that it had copied the camera raw settings onto any of the other files. My computer's pretty slow (see below) but it should have written one xmp file in an hour.
Question:
Does anyone have any workarounds other than repeating the process 32 times for 1000 images at a time?

Installed TWAIN devices: NONEThe files are only 2MP each, and I have the same issue when I apply the changes to RAW files and JPG files. The error occurs though before any changes are applied, before the images would need to be recached, as when the error doesn't occur the dialogue box I mentioned pops up asking what to change.
Your specs sound more then enough I would think. Do you have set the option to Write cache to folders when possible and if so could you uncheck that option?
I don't have experience with this kind of numbers but I do dump the Bridge cache manually on a regular base (every new cycle it seems to be more stable so more interval in the periods of dumping cache) but my main folder contains usually around 6 to 7 K of DNG files from 21 MP dSLR. This starts caching without problems but takes a few hours before done.
Can't use the option cache for folder due to a longstanding problem with error message to replace the CacheT file, hence my question about your setting.
Also I have set the option to previews Always HQ and in the prefs have set the option to build monitor size previews.
As said, don't know the large numbers but the 2 MP files are very small and it should be possible for Bridge I would think?
Did you also try to create a new folder and place the files inthere. Or divide them in to three folders for testing? -
Camera raw settings change while rating stars
While I rate my images with stars in Bridge, I can see that the Camera Raw settings are changing the preview image as soon as set the stars in the Content panel are set. Why does the preview changes if the thumbnail is already generated? Shouldn't any newly generated thumbnail contain Camera Raw Default Settings as soon as they are displayed? Can anyone please tell me how to set-up Bridge or Camera Raw Preferences correctly in order to generate from the first time the preview images with my Camara Raw Default Development settings? Thank you for any usefull hint.
This is just a guess, but I would say that is the way it should work.
If you have Bridge set to HQ thumbs the thumbnails will reflect the current edit of the RAW image. Since lables are considered an edit (change of metadata), Bridge would have to rebuild the thumbnail to the current version, even though it does not reflect any visual changes. -
How do you clear the Camera RAW settings?
When opening a photo in Bridge, the photo opens in it's original state but then Bridge quickly applies settings to it and it looks darker. How do I stop this from happening? Can I easily turn it off and on? I tried Edit>Apply Camera RAW Settings>Clear Camera Raw Settings but it did nothing.
Any ideas?
Thanks!Hi and tanks for your answer
I´ve done it . I ´ve put all the settings to zero (brigthness, contrast , expose, etc..) and I´ve saved it as new CR default values, but the images continue "getting worse" (although not the same situation , now they lose all their "strong", i supose cause the zero values)
In my bridge thumnail i see the image as i taked it, right with the light and the color i want. but in the moment i select with my mouse the image to see it in preview mode, the image "gets worse". -
Manipulating Camera Raw settings with javascript
Is it possible to manipulate the Camera Raw settings with a javascript? I've been looking for info on this and have had no luck finding any.
What I'm doing is multiple conversions from a single RAW file set at different exposures, brightnesses, sharpnesses, etc.
Here are the basic steps:
1. Open RAW file in ACR.
2. Adjust for a baseline image.
3. Open image as an object in Photoshop.
4. Duplicate that object layer and run "edit settings" on this new layer.
5. Make adjustments ***
6. Click OK to apply new settings to this layer.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 on original layer as many times as needed.
I got everything working as I want, but I'd like to be able to automate step 5 for certain file types so that it will set some of the settings for me without going through the dialog to do this. The settings I'd really like to be able to adjust this way are exposure and brightness and if possible, I'd like to set them in relation to the original layer's settings for those parameters.Here is what I had in mind. Note the document is the same size as the raw file. This will place 5 copies of the raw file in the activeDocument, each with a different exposure.
var rawFile = new File( "~/Desktop/DSC_5396.NEF" );
var xmpFile = new File( "~/Desktop/DSC_5396.xmp" );

I just made the switch to mac. I am have installed all the new PS6 CC and bridge and I am not trying to add some presets to my ACR but when I search for the folder to place them it is not there. From what I researched it says it should be under camera library/application support/adobe/camera raw/settings but I can only get to library/application support/adobe/ and then there are two different camera raw options I have checked both and there are not settings folder. If anyone can help me please thanks
You want your user library
Mac(user)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings
In finder click on Go then hold down the Option key and then click on Library -
Why are my images suddenly darker in camera raw and photoshop C4 than when I open them in bridge?
"Catalog"? Are you referencing Ps Elements perhaps?
Wrong forum. We do not do Elements here.
Here's the link to the Elements forum:

Where do I find the Camera Raw settings file?
I've been running Creative Suite 3 on a MacBook Pro. I just bought a Mac Pro so got my disks off the shelf to install on the new machine. That's when I found I have to deactive the programmes on the laptop in order to install them on the tower. (Which strikes me as outrageously restrictive. How many people work on a tower at home and a laptop for the road?)
Having gone throught the deactivation/activation process, I opened Photoshop to process some NEF files, and then remembered that my Camera Raw settings were somewhere on the laptop - but where ??? I assume there must be a file somewhere, but have not so far been able to find it.
Any ideas gratefully received.

By "Camera Raw Settings file", I take it that you are looking for the develop settings for each raw file. These settings can be stored in two ways. The first and most common method is to store them as sidecar *.xmp files in the same directory as the NEFs. The other method is to store them in a centrally located Camera Raw database. One can change these methods via the Edit Preferences menu of either Photoshop or Camera Raw. Further information is here:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSD94FB319-761D-4e9a-BC8D-24DF7EBC05B4.html
The storage location for this central database as well as the storage locations for other settings are shown in this Adobe link:

Default Camera Raw settings question
For a long time, I did not understand why do photos in Bridge that were shot in RAW appear satureted for a second and then become dull...as I understand, the first thumbnail isn't made from actual Raw with no settings, but the second one is, so it's not as "pretty".
My question is - is there a way to set the default RAW settings so that images shot in RAW would look like the ones shot in JPG? Because i mostly shoot in RAW+JPG and I'd like the RAW duplicates to look as pretty as JPG ones by default. Is the only option manually setting RAW settings and applying it as a default?
ThanksThe short answer is No.
The longer answer is Nearly, it depends.
The full answer is:
The initial image you see is the integrated thumbnail in the raw file, which is created at capture by the camera using its picture settings. This is not the "correct" version of the image (as there is no right or wrong way to convert raw to jpeg, just different ways). It is the version provided by the camera manufacturer using the chosen picture settings. Some may say it's the correct version, some will disagree. I say that, if you have chosen to shoot raw, you must be disagreeing to an extent.
Adobe's default conversion will not look like the camera's conversion. Adobe has its own idea of how your picture should convert, but it sees it only as a starting point. If you'd rather have a different starting point, closer to the camera's version, you can. Adobe provides Camera profiles designed to approximate the different camera picture settings, like Camera Standard, Camera Neutral, Camera Portrait, etc., and you can use those intead. They are nearer, but not exactly. Find them on the Camera Calibration tab in Camera Raw.
You can make these different settings default by opening a new photo in Camera Raw, changing the camera profile, tweaking any basic exposure settings, and then clicking on the little menu icon on the far right, and select Save New Camera Raw Defaults.
But, again, I suggest that you shouldn't be trying to duplicate the jpeg, otherwise why shoot raw in the first place? Just try to get the default how you think it should look. -
Importing images with Lightroom 2 & Camera RAW 4.5
The following query has been raised with Adobe Technical Support (5 days ago and I am still waiting for a response/reply. They claim to reply within 24 hours but they have not on this occasion......they seem to be ignoring me
Perhaps a fellow user can help to identify or resolve the problem.
Operating System:
Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3)
Software:
Adobe Design Premium CS3 (10.0.1); Photoshop Lightroom 1.4 (which was working fine) and Lightroom 2 (on trial and not working particularly well)
I am using a trial download of Photoshop Lightroom 2 (with Camera RAW 4.5 in Photoshop CS3).
I am having a few problems with editing Lightroom 2 images in Photoshop CS3 but I understand that Adobe is currently investigating a solution to this problem.
I have also noticed another potential problem since I have started to import images from a computer drive to Lightroom 2 and converting the Manufacturers RAW files to DNG (with the option to leave the files at their current location/drive).
My RAW and JPEG files open ok in Camera RAW (v 4.5) for basic editing and subsequently to Photoshop for more detailed work. The problem is that all my images are now opening as Smart Objects by default in Photoshop CS3, as opposed to opening as a Background layer". (I have not knowingly opted to use the Open as Smart Object option.
I am not entirely sure how this came about but I have also lost the capacity to edit images with empty Levels adjustment layers or percentage (%) grey fill option).
I am able to highlight the respective layer and create the empty Levels adjustment layer, change the blend mode to either Multiply or Screen, fill the Layer Mask with Black (Alt & backspace), change the opacity level as desired, select the brush tool and change the foreground colour to white to enable the applicable Dodge or Burn processes.
Unfortunately, it does not function irrespective of the preferred opacity level. The Dodge or Burn feature is static with no effect on the image.
I cannot recall any settings to open all files as Smart Objects in Photoshop CS3 but would welcome some help in identifying such a setting if it exists. Alternatively, I would welcome any other suggested methods of correcting the above difficulties.
The same difficulties are evident when I try to use the Dodge or Burn features via the Edit and Fill option with a percentage of Grey and the Overlay Blend Mode.
The "Common Denominator" of the above difficulties appear to be Lightroom 2 and Camera RAW 4.5 (individually and or collectively) and now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Are any other users experiencing similar issues or have any suggestions about how I might correct or resolve these problems? ......
I am not afraid of hearing or accepting that the "Dummy Factor" has played some part or how I may release myself from the said "Dummy Factor".....any help is welcome help.
Adobe Technical Support seems to be ignoring me......I wonder why?
Regards
Bob WallaceEssentially you are wrapping the raw image data into a special type of layer, a "smart object". You can then revisit and fine tune the Camera Raw conversion as often as you want and take advantage of working directly on the raw data in its pre-Photoshop purity. You can also apply to this smart object layer a number of Photoshop adjustments and filters - and again redo and fine tune them as often as you wish.
You'll find them explained in a number of recent books. I know Scott Kelby is keen on them, there are examples on Russell Brown's site, and my own book last year on B&W strongly advocated their use.
Have a play.

Seems that we are unable to Choose for "open as" a default of Camera Raw" ?
Greetings
I have no problem with this in that if I, for instance, want to open a JPEG in Camera Raw, then I choose that from the drop-down box. I have learned this by
initially forgetting many times, then completing the action successfully. Then the drop-down box comes up with that option for the rest of the session. Next time I
open Elements however the default is not Raw but,instead Photoshop PSD.
However, we do teach other people at our sessions how to use Elements and this makes it more difficult to do. Although there are many possible permutations, the
most obvious is to open as Adobe Camera Raw. If we want to open as Photoshop PSD then a simple "Open" on a Photoshop PSD file will do the trick.
Is there something I am missing ??Jim Air wrote:
PS - I did not answer your question re are we teaching the use of "ACR as default for jpegs". I would not go so far as to say, default. Nevertheless we try to encourage the use of RAW and also very definitely for the images that we really like and/or are unique shots, the extra value of processing these jpegs in ACR.
Yes I agree with the purpose.
I think it's not only a quality advice, it's also a matter of efficiency in your workflow. When you compare the workflow in Lightroom to a traditional workflow in the combo editor - organizer - ACR, you can see how the 'parametric' editing of Lightroom is valuable. You can edit batches of files with raws and jpegs, you don't bother about creating output versions at editing time, you can appy the same edits to a selection of files. In a way, you can do the same if you are only working with raws in Elements. What breaks the combo is when you are working with jpeg. You can't open jpegs in ACR from the Organizer... unless they have already been opened from the editor!
My last experiment in the Christmas event was dealing with a collection of 300 pictures taken at max ISO by three different P&S cameras, a few with flash, most without. The lighting was indoors, several kinds of fluorescent lights, halogen, tungsten and mixed daylight. Any combination of those lights, different abilities from the 3 cameras re ISO, noise, saturation... but they were taken by short sequences of 4 to 15 in the same lighting conditions.
So, you are right only ACR can provide a good start to deal with the atrocious white balance problem as well as the noise (In some cases, there was no other solution than a black and white conversion). But I was able to process quickly each sequence in a similar lighting by using common settings. I did only open a few in the editor, I simply clicked 'Done' after the tonal, noise and cropping adjustments. After the first batch of edits, I was able to use only the Organizer for my final edits as I could open 'converted' jpegs as well as raw in the editor.
So, the workaround for the organizer inability to open jpegs in ACR would be to 'Open in ACR' in the editor batches of jpegs, doing nothing in the ACR dialog except selecting the whole batch and clicking 'Done'. After that, you can open in ACR from the Organizer! Note that doing nothing in the ACR dialog means that the 'default ACR conversion settings' will be applied (non destructively). Believe me, that was already a big improvement in white balance and tonal rendition! -
Image processor in OSX looses its settings.
I recently switched from Windows to OSX. I use the image processor a lot (CS6). On Windows my settings were remembered. On OSX they are not and I have to save them and later load them again. Is this normal behavior or am I doing something wrong?
well, I think I at least found a work around. If I save the settings I want as new camera defaults, it keeps the conversion consistent.

Custom Camera Raw settings not being recognised after copying to another mac
Images captured on MacBook Pro and custom settings applied in Camera Raw, images then transferred to Mac Pro via USB are opened on Mac Pro using Adobe Bridge CS6, Camera Raw doesn't recognise the custom setting and opens using the setting used last time in Camera Raw.
How do you retain the custom settings when transferring images and opening on another mac, the files are CR2 and the xmp files are also copied as well....and you did copy the xmp files as well as the RAW files to the second computer?

Trouble changing Camera RAW settings in Javascript (worked in CS5, but not CS6)
I just upgraded to Master Collection CS6 from Production Premium CS5, and CameraRAWOpenOptions settings in scripts that I had working in Photoshop CS5 (64-bit) using Extendscript CS5 are no longer working with Photoshop CS6. I get no error messages, but the settings I specify in the scripts (for example, CameraRAWOpenOptions.exposure=2.00) do not take effect when the image is opened. Other Photoshop properties and actions within my script are working correctly.
Note that this is an issue in Photoshop CS6. I can use Extendscript CS5 or CS6, and the result is the same.
Here is the way I am changing the settings in my script:
var RawOptions = new CameraRAWOpenOptions;
//RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.CUSTOM;
//RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.SELECTEDIMAGE;
RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.CAMERA;
RawOptions.exposure=+2.00;
RawOptions.vignettingAmount = 0;
RawOptions.vignettingMidpoint = 0;
RawOptions.contrast = 50;
RawOptions.saturation = 0;
RawOptions.shadows = 0;
RawOptions.luminanceSmoothing = 0;
var JPGopts = new JPEGSaveOptions;
JPGopts.quality = JPEGquality;
//Perform the loop through the files
app.open(testListing[0], RawOptions, false);
app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
for (var nfile = nstart; nfile < nstop; nfile++)
app.open(testListing[nfile], RawOptions, false);
FnameSave = new File(SavePath+"/"+testListing[nfile].name);
app.activeDocument.saveAs(FnameSave, JPGopts, false, Extension.UPPERCASE);
app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);I found a few of them actually work.
CameraRAWOpenOptions.tint=0; // works (-150 to 150)
CameraRAWOpenOptions.temperature=5500; // works (2000 to 50000)
CameraRAWOpenOptions.luminanceSmoothing = 0; // works 0 to 100
CameraRAWOpenOptions.saturation=50; // works =100 to 100
CameraRAWOpenOptions.vignettingAmount=0; //works -100 to 100
CameraRAWOpenOptions.vignettingMidpoint=0; //works -100 to 100
These ones do not work:
CameraRAWOpenOptions.brightness=0; // does not work (0 to 150)
CameraRAWOpenOptions.contrast=0; // does not work (-50 to 100)
CameraRAWOpenOptions.exposure = 0; // does not work (-4.0 to +4.0)
CameraRAWOpenOptions.shadows=0; // (0 to 100) does not work
CameraRAWOpenOptions.whiteBalance=WhiteBalanceType.SHADE; // does not work
I noticed that, doing File-->File Info--> "Advanced" tab-->expand "Camera Raw Properties" that the ones that do not work have mostly either been removed (brightness) or had "2012" added to their names in the XMP in the conversion from CS5 to CS6.
It appears the mapping from Javascript objects/properties to how Photoshop knows them is broken with the new version. Is there any way to fix this?
Is there an alternate way to do this by going through XMP?
Unfortunately, I'm wanting to use "exposure", which is one of the ones that is broken. My main script sets a custom exposure for each image (trying to smooth out EV jumps between successive images in a sunset time lapse).
