Image quailty

Hi,
iMac 24 2.33, 256 vram OS X.4.10 iMovie HD
I have iShowU to record the screen; I am creating a user help video for some software. I have tried several codecs in iShowU , and the output (as .mov) all look fine when played in QuickTime.
When these files are added into iMovie HD, the display quality is poor. What was crisp screen text is fuzzy, no matter what window size I drag the iMovie window to. The output using export to QuickTime using High Quality seems even worse. Certainly not good enough to distribute. I woudl have expected faithful reproduction of the screen capture (as the output from iShowU)
What am I missing?
regards
Chris

for what you are making and why you are using it and where you will be showing it....do what Kirk suggests. QuickTime will give you what you need.
and...P.S... personally, I would NOT have used any compression whatsoever when exporting it from iShowU. I don't think you would need to compress a single anything if you are showing it on the computer. Most every computer nowadays has enough memory to run almost anything on it, so why the compression for a computer run QT movie? But since you already did, that is enough. No more.

  • Poor image quailty from DVD Studio Pro

    Hello,
I produced a 17minute DVD a few years ago, shot SD with a Panasonic DVX 100a.  Edited in Final Cut Pro 6.  They have asked me to burn a couple more DVD's for them.  When I imported the assets 2 pass M2v & ac3 audio and burned the DVD with a bit rate of 6.5 to 7. the image quality is really low.  I previously ran all FCP through Compressor, Highest quality, best etc.
Someone told me that going back to FCP and using a de-interlacing filter applied to the project would help with image quality.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I know that going to a DVD will never look as good as my sweet 27" monitor, but the image seems blown out (hot) and the colors unsaturated and a bit too grainy.  It seems more so then I remember the project looking. I am using DVD Studio 4.
So is there any steps that can help me have a SD project edited in Final Cut Pro 6... use Compressor... 2 pass highest quailty 90 min DVD... to DVD Studio Pro 4 and get the best quality I can get.  I appreciate any guidance you can give me.
    Thanks,
    Jan

You may find that Photoshop does a better job of resampling down to your SD PAL resolution. When DVDSP resamples down from your 1024x576 file, you are at the mercy of the hardware or software rendering in DVDSP, depending on your DVDSP prefs. Ideally, I'd work in Photoshop at 720x576, and use the pixel aspect ratio correction to correct the preview aspect ratio in Photoshop.

  • JPEG Image Quality problem

Until yesterday, when saving an image as a JPEG I would click "Save As", select my folder and the Image Quality dialog box would pop up and I would then select 12/Maximum as the image quailty and hit "OK".  Thereafter, every time I saved an image, Photoshop applied the same settings as the previous save i.e., 12/Maximum was pre-selected and I would just hit OK and move to my next image.
However, since yesterday Photoshop is no longer pre applying the last setting used and is defaulting to quality 8/High every time.  Si everytime I save, I am now having to slide the slider to 12 which is kind of interrupting my work flow.
I have tried delete my preferences settings in the hope that this glitch would be fixed by resetting the program, but the problem persists.
Has anyone experienced this and how can I fix it?
    Thanks.

AFAIK jpeg quality settings are sticky per file, not globally (at least inside Photoshop, but that association may not transfer between applications).
So if the files are out of a camera they probably already have a quality level assigned, and Photoshop is honoring that. Try a low setting on a test file and see what happens when you resave that. It should be the same.
And...oh, never mind. You probably know already...cumulative quality loss and so on...

  • InDesign CS5.5 Can't export to anything but smallest size PDF

    Hi everyone,
starting this morning i am unable to export a document as a PDF to anything but the smallest possible size setting. All the other options (high quality print, x1a, etc) are gone. I installed an update yesterday but can't recall what the update was for so i'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue? I have some ads due and need to export to a higher res PDF.
I've tried doin't Print as Adobe PDF but the option doesn't reside there either.
    Comments/suggestions definitely welcome.
    Thanks!

You can start with wahtever preset is avialable. From the dropdown for standards, pick PDF/X-1a and most of the seetings will chang automatically for you, but you still need to go to the Compression screen and make sure the color and grayscale sownsample values are set to 300 and the the image quailty is set to Maximum, and set lineart compression to 1200, then go to the Advanced screen and set the transparency flattener resolution to [High Resolution].
Do you make backups of your computer on a regular basis? On mac that would probably be Time Machine, on windows either Windows backup or a third-party program. If you do, you ought to be able to find your old presets on the backup file and restore them.

  • How does one force an image to a defined color palette?

I'm trying to limit the colors displayed in an RGB image but I'm not sure how to go about doing. I have a palette of 454 colors (so indexed color is not an option) and I would like to force my image to that color space. This may seem like an odd request, but there's actually a (theoretically) logical reason for it: in a nutshell, I have a swatch palette that corresponds to colors of a particular brand of thread and I want to fit the image's colors to the nearest thread color. While I might be able to do that by eye, I have 454 choices to choose from (laborious!) and I'd prefer to automate the process by letting Photoshop's adaptive color conversion algorithms do their magic.
Or am I overlooking something obvious?
I appreciate any suggestions or assistance!

    Charles,
I went ahead and cobbled together a script from other's code to generate a directory full of 100x100 72dpi jpg swatches from a CSV list of names, R, G, and B values. I fed the 454-file directory to MacOSaix and I'm letting it do it's thing. Thanks for the suggestion!
I doubt it will be of any value to anyone, but here's the script, just in case:
    #target Photoshop
    function main() {
         if (isOSX()) {
              var csvFile = File.openDialog('Select a CSV File', function (f) { return (f instanceof Folder) || f.name.match(/\.csv$/i);} );

  • Image Export

    Hello
When using Acrobat 9 Pro to export a JPEG at high resolution (e.g. 600DPI or more), I often get the error message "The image is too wide to output. Please crop it or reduce resolution and try again."
This means I end up with a JPEG of much lower resolution than I wanted.
Is this  a software or hardware limitation, or a configuration setting I can change?
    Many thanks.

Bill, I am having the same issues, the major problem is the output using 300 DPI is fuzzy at best... see attached screen clips.
I will attempt to describe the process I used to get the results using Adobe Acrobat X, Version 10.1.7
starting with a 30" x 42" blueprint in .PDF format created by AutoCad (Newer Version).
FILE - SAVE AS - IMAGE - TIFF, MONOCROME SETTINGS,  (see screen clip below)
When save it as TIFF with the monocrome settings at 300DPI , it works but the quailty is unacceptable. if i change the resolution to 600 pixels i get the error message below...
Acrobat could not save a page in this document because of the following error: The image is too wide to output. Please crop it or reduce resolution and try again. (Page 1)
I really need to know how to make a clear (readable) output from these PDF douments?
    Save as Settings...
Screen Clip from PDF file at 800% magnification, crystal clear
Screen Clip from TIFF output file at 200% magnification, yuck!

  • Importing RAW images from Canon EOS 550D

I've used iPhoto 8 (version 7.1.5) with a Canon Powershot. Everything working fine.
I just bought a Canon EOS 550D. Importing JPEG files is OK; But iPhoto refuses to import the RAW images from the 550D.
How can I solve this problem ?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That camera is new and not supported as yet by either Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475?viewlocale=en_US
    or Snow Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825.
Evidently the camera is so new that even the Adobe Camera RAW converter doesn't support it yet - http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
You'll have to use another application that does recognize that format or shoot the highest quailty JPEG the camera provides until support is offered.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Error while Importing .bmp Images

    Hello All,
I'm getting an error when attempting to import a bitmap (*.bmp) image file into Flash Professional CS6. I tried both "Import to Library" and "Import to Stage" and they both throw the same error...
This is the Error I get when attempting the import:
"One or more files were not imported because there were problems reading them."
After searching around online I found a few examples of people getting similar problems when importing stuff but none of those were for impoting .bmp images.
Any idea why I can't do this?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    EDIT:
I just tried downloaing a .bmp from the internet and was able to successfully import that, but still can't import the one I actuallty want. The bitmap that I want to import is one that I created using Gimp 2.8 and had to "export" it to .bmp format from Gimp's xcf file format...
    Thanks in Advance,
    Matt

Hey sinious, thanks for the reply!
Ok I'll just use the PNG format then... I was only trying BMP because I read that it had the bast image quality. I've been using PNG format for ALL my Frame's Backgrounds, but some of the Text that was part of the PNG Image (*i.e. part of the background image) looked choppy after importing it into my Library and setting it as the Frame's background. But it looks fine when viewing the image with any other "Image Viewer" type program.
Might be that it just looks a little choppy when "testing" the movie, by hitting Ctrl+Enter...
    EDIT:
Ok, so I just Published it and viewed it on another PC (*I have it setup to be able to be viewed from anywhere in the network using the flashpolicy file stuff) and it seems to look better after its Published... Maybe the quailty isn't as good when debugging/testing the movie...?
Thanks Again for your reply, much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Can you show at a glance which event images are in albums?

Say I had an event containing multiple similar but different images, is there a way to show in the grid view for example which images have already been used in one or more albums?
Would be handy to be able to select a 'show list of albums containing this image'dialogue box. I guess you could hide images you've used but that wouldn't work automatically, nor would any other tagging/rating.
Another approach would be to make albums containing everything in a given event, then move the images out of that album once used, just seems fiddly to me.

Would be handy to be able to select a 'show list of albums containing this image'dialogue box.
Yes it would and many people have suggested tit. Add your voice to the chorus at iPhoto Menu -> Provide Apple Feedback.
A workaround - and it's no better - is to go to an album and select al, then give all those pics a keyword. Then in grid view you can see which pics have the keyword. (View -> Keywords)

  • System Image Restore in Window 8.1

I have not been able to find a data migration application that works at cloning a Windows 8.1 hard drive to a new SSD.  With that in mind I want to go about moving the contents, data and operating system from my working C: to a new SSD.  I want
to go about it as if I have backed up my system, my C: drive has failed so I need to install a new drive and restore my data and operating system to the new drive.  I can't seem to find any simple (this should be simple) straight forward way to do this
nor can I find any form of written instruction on how to go about this.
I would love to have someone articulate this.  As it stands I have a fully operational intact C drive.  I have completed a disk image to a second separate hard drive.  I now want to restore that content to a third (SSD ) drive.
    Where do I begin?

There is a system backup tool called System Image Backup, follow these steps to conduct this:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
Enter File History in the search box, tap or click File History, and then click System Image Backup at the left part.
See the screenshot as below, you can backup it on local machine or a DVD or a network share folder:
Besides, I need to point out that this backup method will generate a vhd file, if you want to restore the system you need an DVD installation midia.
You cannot just restore a vhd file directly to the hard drive.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 opening an image in middle of CS opening screen?

Can anyone please help me with a way of opening images in CS2 where after opening they will appear in the middle
of the CS screen rather then in the top left corner?
I can drag and maximize so they appear in the middle, but on reopening another image they default to the top left again, I would like them to always
    open in the middle?
    Thanks

Still having problems?  I was struggling to find any documentation for CS2 online, but realised that my bookshelf goes back to Photoshop 6, and I have Martin Evening's Photoshop for Photographers CS2.  Unfortunately, I could see nothing in any of the Preferences tabs that would help.
At this stage I don't really know what you have tried?  You should try to reset your workspace, and if that does nothing, reset your preferences.  The usual way to do that is to hold down Shift Alt Ctrl while opening Photoshop, but I don't know for sure that worked with CS2.
Bernie Ecclestone would only need a tiny exec jet, unless he wanted to take his wife along. ;-)
CC is Creative Cloud, and Tabs are those things you see along the top of the screen in your web browser when you have more than one page open.
Tauranga is on the North Island, but is very nice and has great beaches (if they have got the oil off)  I live in rural Marlborough right in the middle of the prime grape growing area.  Try Google with Rapaura.  I'm a few hundred metres south of the school.

  • Image Processor Tab Missing in New Adobe Bridge CC 2014

In the new Bridge CC you used to have a TAB under tools called Photoshop which you could run the script Image Processor for easily processing jpegs. What has happened to this and is their maybe a new way of processing jpegs to lo-res that I dont know about from tiff or jpeg or does my bridge have a problem?
I have attached a image grab from my bridge that shows that the tab is not there. I know that you can access image processor directly from Photoshop, but they used to always be linked.

No, it is still in Bridge CC.
Did you uninstall Photoshop CC after installing Photoshop CC 2014? If so, that may have removed some of the Bridge integration scripts by mistake. Re-installing Photoshop CC 2014 should replace the scripts.
and it should give the image processor tab back
