Image quality in Preview is extremely low

Hello,
I just recently switched to Mac from PC. Since using this Mac, I have had some issues with image quality. At first I thought it was just Photoshop, but I realized that the standard OS preview is also having display issues.
Basically, if I open an image in preview or in Photoshop to edit, the quality is low, but when I go to "save for web" and view it in the preview box, it looks perfectly normal. Website images look normal, and everything else that is vector looks normal. It's only pictures that are having this issue.
I have no idea what would cause preview images and photoshop files to look like this.
Here is a link to a picture of the problem. The left side is what the image looks like in Photoshop (and Preview) and the right side is the "save for web" box showing it looks normal.
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance someone may be able to offer.

Just the opposite on my Mac.

  • Poor image quality in preview - CR2008Sp4

    Hi,
I have a report, designed in CR 2008 SP4, with a logo image(blob field - bmp) on the top of the page.
When previewing the report from my Win Forms app, the image quality is poor/grainy.
If I export it to PDF (either from the previewer or from code) or print it, the image quality is perfect.
I have the report option 'Retain Original Image Color Depth' ticked.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Fergus

    Hi Bhushan,
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Poor Image Quality Transfered To iPhone

    Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to aperture after switching from iPhoto and have run into the following problem.
I have iTunes set up to sync certain projects in my library over to my iPhone. The problem is the image quality being transferred is rather low and alot of pictures on my iPhone look grainy/pixelated. If I go into Aperture I can see the file just fine in full quality.
Any tips on how to get the quality transferred to the iPhone better? Thanks

Aperture mainly uses previews for sharing with other applications (so you can use them in iLife/iWork, see them in Finder, easily upload albums to Apple TV via iTunes, etc.). None of these functions work if you don't have previews generated for them.
Given there's a fair bit of space overhead to Previews, and given I found after a year+ of use that I had to manually create previews for what I wanted to see, I found it was easier for me to just do this fully manually and export JPEGs.
But have a read of the Previews section of the Aperture documentation. See how they're described, and see if it's functionality you want. If not, there's no reason you have to use previews at all. I don't.

  • Master level is extremely low((((

Spent lotsa time remixing one track and now when everything mixed and polished and I like the sound, ca y est! the master level peaks at -22 or sth, even with the Logic Adaptive limiter, when I try to bounce the output 1-2 channel track there are even no waveform peaks on the file image, and everything is still extremely low...I think I overcompressed the track but I like the sound and I simply won't be able to redo it (nor I have any desire to), how can I get it to at least -5 or more?

By the way, excellent advice John. This is one of those questions that is hard to answer without the project itself. Even a screenshot of the complete mixer plus one of the complete (=all tracks from start to finish cisible) arrange could tell us a lot.
To the OP: this is how to get screenshots in a post here:
+You can only post screenshots if you upload the Screenshots to an internet site/server first. I upload my screens to Flickr http://www.flickr.com, but there are other free photo-upload sites. If you have a .mac account, you could use that instead.+
    +Taking screenshots:+
Shift+CMD3 takes a shot of the entire screen.+
Shift+CMD4 turns the cursor into a rectangular marquee tool. Clickdrag until you have the right area framed, then release the mousebutton to take the shot. If you choose the wrong starting point for the marquee, hit Esc and try again.+
+Once you've uploaded it, go to where it is uploaded, right- or ctrl-click on the picture and choose *Copy Image Location*. Go to your post and add the following syntax to it:+
    +{img src="pastecopiedImageLocationhere"}+
+You must substitute < and > for the {}braces shown above, and the +quotation marks are essential.
+Use the Preview tab (right above the five format buttons) when writing a post to check if the screenshot shows up in your post, before actually posting it.+

  • Poor quality in preview - image is blurry

To date, I have not had any issues with the preview quality matching the actual image quality.
I have not made any hardware por software changes.  Image files are in raw, jpg and tiff formats.
This issue appears to be only with raw files.  The image in preview is extremely blurry, yet when the
file is opened it is tack sharp.  I have checked all my preference settings and cannot figure out what is goin on.
I have tried purging and refreshing the cache and nothing seems to work.
    I am running PS CS4
    Windows Vist 64 Ultimate
    Please help!
Update: I have changed raw preferences to apply to preview images only.  The image qulaity only seems to improve when I
purge the cache for the slected images.  I have the cache option for export to folder when possible checked.  I have tried to purge the cache for
all images but the preview does not imprevoce unless I purge selected only.

This may be dumb but when it recently happened to me, I opened one image in adobe camera raw and increased the clarity by an inpercievable 1%. Then I hit done. Preview looked crisp again. I copied settings of that image. Then I highlighted all other blurry previews and pasted settings and they all became crisp again. Probabley just a quick fix that doesn't solve the problem but my knowledge is limited.

  • Image Quality Changes After First Preview

I've only been using Aperture for a few weeks but seem to have a problem when I preview any newly imported RAW images.
After I import any new RAW files, I'll select one for preview and for no more then a second the image looks great. Then all of a sudden the quality/brightness/sharpness reduces in front of me.
This only happens the once for each image, after that all images remain at this lower quality once previewed.
It's almost like Aperture is processing the image when I click to preview, but not in a good way.
It there a setting I should be looking for? I thought Aperture processed the image at the point of import, not when you first preview the image?

There can be other causes for this effect than are described above.  On the 5DMK3, if you have the in-camera Picture Styles set to anything other than Standard or Neutral, the Picture Style will be applied to the JPEG but Aperture's Raw converter will not apply the Picture Style adjustments when it processes the image.  Thus you will see some kind of shift in colour and/or contrast.
So either shoot only in JPEG mode if you want the Picture Styles applied to your images, or change the camera Picture Style to Standard or Neutral.

  • When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
    I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
    before.

  • How can I lower the image quality on a streaming online video

    Hi,
I have an old iMac G3 with 500 Mhz Power PC and 1 gig of RAM  and running Tiger OS 10.4.11
I am trying to watch online streaming news through http://www.rentadrone.org but it is, of course, jerky playback.
My issue is that adobe flash will not let me change the quality of the video to low because the option is grayed out.
I know that this iMac was prior to videos becoming common online and I know that I have to sacrifice video quality.
I can play youtube videos well, as in not jerky, in the 240 image quality and wanted to be able to do this through
other websites with video. I have disabled Dashboard to gain CPU, tried to play the video through Realplayer and
changed my Display from millions of color to thousands but I haven't been able to stop the jerking on the video.
Is there a workaround or other solution?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions or help.

Each video website has its own controllers over how much choice you have over quality of streaming.
However, as you use Real Player, you could wait until the video finishes downloading, then click 'Download' in the RealPlayer Download Agent window and watch it offline, when it should play smoother.

  • Low File Size/Great Image Quality: H.264, AAC

    1. I created a slideshow in iPhoto, exported it to a QT movie file. The properties of it is as follows:
    Exibit A:
    Dimensions: 720x480
Format: MPEG-4 Video, AAC, Stereo, 44.100kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 7277.87 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 143.58MB
    2. I pulled a QT Movie file from the web with the following properties:
    Exibit B:
    Dimensions: 480x360
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 48.000kHz
    FPS: 28.79
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 01'22
    Data Rate: 868.14 kbits/sec
    Size: 8.5MB
    3. I tried to see if I could compress my movie and keep the quality as comparible to Exibit B. Here's what I ended up with:
    Exibit C:
    Dimensions: 720x480
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 44.100kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 4826.73 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 95.22MB
    4. I tried again. This time creating the same dimension as Exibit B. Here what I got:
    Exibit D:
    Dimensions: 480x360
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 2577.17 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 51MB
How can I create a very low size and image quality as Exibit B?
I have QTPro. Do I need something else?
    Thanks.

    Update:
Well playing all exibits on the Windows workstation worked just fine after the update. I now has QT7.
Next...I've exported Exibit A down to 8MB (Exitbit F)by recommendations from Capt. QTKirk. Here are the properties:
    Exibit F:
Format: AAC, Stereo (LR), 32.000kHz, H.264, 720x480, Millions
    FPS: 15
    Data Size: 8.5MB
    Data Rate: 429.79kbits/sec
    Overall Quality:
Video: Fair at 720x480; much better at 486x324; overall choppy transitions as well
    Audio: Fair -close to mono.
    Anyone else have any suggestions?
How and what are others using to get the audio/video quality as crisp and sharp as what's shown in the QT Movie Trailer site?

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

I've been sent a scan of a document as an attachment. Clicking on it, I get the message, "Pixel aspect ration correction is for preview purposes only. Turn it off for maximum image quality." What is pixel aspect ration and how do I turn it off?

It's "aspect ratio", not aspect "ration".
It's what determines whether you have square pixels ("normal") or, if rectangular pixels, what the aspect ratio (width : length)  of that rectangle is.
It's explained in the Help files.  I cannot go into more detail because you have neglected to provide information about your platform and exact version of Photoshop.

Hi: I have a ipad 2 and when taking are blurry photos in low image quality. I have to do something to improve the image quality?
    I wait your comments...Thanks.

    Two main points:
    1.  Use good lighting.
    2.  Remember the photo is actually taken when you release the shutter ("take photo") button.  Make sure you do not move the iPad when you release the button.

  • Low image quality on Android using CameraRoll.addBitmapData

When using CameraRoll.addBitmapData on Android the resulting .jpg's quality is quite low in what looks like 50% jpg compression. In iOS the quality is much better. How do I reduce the compression on Android and increase the image quality? I don't quite understand why the compression is so high and why there isn't a method argument to adjust it.
    Is there a work-around?
My app is an art app that users typically export imagery from to use in other apps or share. When the quality is so low, the additional compression in another app makes it even worse.
Any help is apprecaited it. Thanks in advance.

As DPI, or PPI, are meaningless in Video, one should concentrate on the pixel x pixel dimensions. Also, with the exception of PrPro CS5 & 5.5, with CUDA/MPE acceleration, Scaling of stills in an image editing program, like Photoshop, will yield better quality. This ARTICLE goes into more detail, and also gives tips on doing batch Scaling of entire folders of still images for Video use.
    Good luck,

  • Poor image quality elements 12 slideshow preview

As I can't find any reference to my original post I thought I'd re-do it.  I created a slideshow in elements 12 and found the image quality to fall far short of high definition.  The source folder for the images used is contained in Windows Pictures.  The pictures were taken with a Canon t4i camera with the image quality being excellent.  For whatever reason the quality of the slideshow images are poor.  Any help would be appreciated.

Don't purchase a video editing app to work with just still images. They are meant to be used with DV and really don't do a still image any justice.
The final source format should determine the software used. You are suggesting a DVD distribution of your work.
iPhoto is meant to be used on still images (not iMovie, in my opinion).
You don't really want to convert a single frame into multiple frames if you don't need to.
You may want to try the Photo JPEG, Motion JPEG or Animation codecs from iMovie and see if they improve the visual appearance of your work.
Since you want to use a DVD as the distribution method then iDVD may not be the best option either. It is meant for set top boxes using a poor 720X480 dimension in MPEG-2 video format.
You may want to consider a bit different approach and use a "data" DVD and use QuickTime Player as the playback engine. These will only play on a computer but your could use the higher dimensions to your advantage and also the visual quality of computer displays to showcase your work.
Since HD DVD players are not yet ready for mass use it may be a better way to distribute your work.
There is no 720X480 dimension limit (only the limit set by the viewer on the display size when viewed on a computer monitor).
Your "still" images would remain "still" except for transitions.
Heck. You could probably put the whole file onto a CD and save even more in production costs.
