Image shrinks in mask shape?

made dupe of clip in v1 and put in v2 directly above.
selected image flipped image around and then did a horizontal flop (and tried unselecting image)for mirror.
selected effects/video filters/matte/ mask shape
as soon as I selected mask shape my image shrinks in size? I looked at scaling but it still shows 100%?
anyone know why?

My mess up. I have a bluetooth mouse and it had a low battery. I usually have a message that pops up to warn me of low battery but this time I did not.

Creating custom mask shape

I want to create a custom mask shape different from the ones supplied in FCP2.
Ive been racking my brain on how to do this. I use CS3 Photoshop and Illustrator.
In illustrator I created the shape I want, a tight round cornered rectangle in black then sent to Photoshop. place it on a new layer (layer 2) and made the first layer transparent, but the outside of the frame is still visable when I rescale the file in FCP....what am I doing wrong?

Hi Allister,
The mask you create in Photoshop needs to be either black and white or have an alpha channel.
When you import that into FCP you need to have
- background on track 1
- your mask on track 2
- foreground on track 3
then select your foreground and choose composite mode> travelling matte alpha if you want to key where your alpha is or travelling matte luma if your image is black and white.
If you're sizing your mask down you may need to crop your foreground so you don't get edges.

Revealing a larger image inside of a shape?

Using CS5, I want to take a shape, and to place larger images inside of the shape so that the only part of the larger image that is revealed is the part showing through the shape. I understand the Drawing Inside Mode, though I already have the larger artwork done, so it will not work with that drawing mode.
1. Is the name of the smaller shape the "mask" that will be masking the larger artwork?
2. How can I use the smaller shape to now hide the larger artwork except the part that will be revealed through the inside of the shape.

How does one crop an .ai image to a defined shape?
In other words, I want to select and crop from a larger image an area such as a rectangle that I define.
Right now, I try to select and crop a rectangular portion of an image but every shape that is even partially within the rectangle is selected both within and without the rectangle.
I am using CS2 on a Mac.

I've figured out part 1, how to crop an image using a rectangle on another layer.
Then I did:
To really get rid of the outlying parts, with the Clipping Mask still
selected you may:
5) Choose anything but Normal in the Transparency palette dropdown
and Object>Flatten Transparency (just keep the defaults).
The result was "Filter cannot complete because of unknown error" FSpt

It is hard to say.
It is more convenient to place the rectangle mentioned in 1) on the same layer; if you place the path(s) to define the Clipping Mask, the Clipping Mask and its contents will be on that layer, everything from lower layers being moved to it.
What about 2) - 4)?
It is easier to answer if you state what happens in the individual steps (repeated here):
1) Create a rectangle on top of the image with the same size (you may use the Transform palette/panel to see the size, and to place it by);
2) Create the cutout shape;
3) Select 1) and 2) and Object>Compound Path>Make;
4) Also select the image, and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.

Error message: Could not parse mask shape on clipboard

can anyone tell me why when I open a new composition, i get an error message that says, "After Effects error: could not parse mask shape on clipboard" then i click ok...brings me to a new composition, then i try to import an image and it gives me the same message only it doesnt import the image? Im brand new at this and trying to teach myself, any help woould be much appreciated

You get this message under various circumstances, both when you create a new composition and when you try to import a file?
What operating system?
What version of After Effects? If After Effects CS5, have you installed the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update?
Has this happened always, or did it just start recently? If it just started recently, what changed right before the problem arose?

Mask shape - Round Rectangle doesnt work

I am using Final Cut Pro 3.0. I know it's old but I discovered today that when I apply a mask shape to a video clip and select "Round Rectangle" as an option the mask shape works only until I render. After the render the whole clip disappeares and I have just a black screen. All the other options in Mask Shape work (Rectangle, Oval, Diamond). Only the "Round Rectangle" doesn't. Can anybody help me. I have trashed the prefs but the problem persists. Could it have something to do with QuickTime 7.0.3.? (although I can't imagine why).

You know, I seem to remember that rounded rectangle ceased to work properly in v4. If I had to use it, I just chose rectangle and smoothed it. But if I'm going to mask in general I use the 8 point matte-- I prefer my mask shapes to somewhat take advantage of some unique feature of the image or layer itself.

What's the process to replace an image inside a mask?

Hi There,
The new replace image function is a massive time saver but it doesn't seem to work with masked images.
These images are masked because they're part of an animation so I really need to replace them - not re-import and re-create the animation from scratch.
If this isn't possible, how do I remove the mask? That way I could just delete the mask, replace the image, then re-mask.
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

The image replace works perfectly with a masked image intact, only if the two images dimensions are the same.
However, doing the following gets you 95% of the way with just a final tweak of the mask:
select the image on the slide
Format > Copy Animation
then replace image
Format > Paste Animation
Format > Image > Edit Mask

Image shrinks when I pull it into my claim application

Hi, I've created some forms in Acrobat 8.1 prof., that are to be read by a state's OCR reader, but when i load it to my claim application, the image shrinks and the form fields are no longer in the position I need them to be in. is there a way to configure the document so that the image remains the same size??? Thanks to whomever may be able to help!!

How is the OCR working? Are you printing the file and then scanning?

Jdeveloper visual editor do not show images and other component shapes

I used jdeveloper(10.1.3.3.0) to create an ADF BC application, I create a jsf jsp file and drag and drop components from ADF Faces Core to this file visual editor, but jdeveloper visual editor do not show images and other component shapes.
Could you tell me how I can fix this problem?

Actually, I need to make a dummy change to the jsp file and then it will display boxes representing the objects in the visual editor whereas I get an exception in the log:
javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext

Mask Shape to Path Issue

So, I'm probably doing something stupid, but here goes.
I imported a Null, and drew a shape with the pen tool. Then, I clicked mask shape and copied it. Finally, I pasted it on the Null's position.
So, what happens is that both the original mask shape and the path then shift in different directions, neither of which are where I originally drew the shape.
I tried this on when everything was 2D and when everything was 3D, but I can't get it to work right.

Your work flow is fouled up because you are expecting to have the mask on a layer stay put while the layer position is changed.
Try drawing your mask path on a solid that is the same size as the comp and make sure that the scale is set to 100%. Then:
Set a single keyframe for the mask path by holding doen the Alt/Option key and pressing M
Copy that keyframe
Set a single keyframe for your null by selecting the null and pressing Alt/Option + m then paste.
The null should exactly follow the path on the solid layer.
Turning a mask path to a position path will not work properly if the layer is scaled. Using the keyframe trick insures that you will always have success converting a mask path to a position path.
If you copy a mask from a layer and then paste the path as position data on the same layer the mask position will change and the shape layer will move. This is normal behavior. If you want the mask path to stay in the same place in the comp you cannot move the layer without making adjustments in the Anchor Point. or use the Pan Behind tool. To make your workflow work you would have to keep the Null in the same position by adding the path data to the position and using an expression to invert the position data for the anchor point. This would defeat the movement of the null.

I am interested in creating a mask shape where I can use it to identify something on the screen inside the shape with the surrounding area darker.
In FCP 6/7, I used to just add a slug on top of the clip, add a mask shape, tweak it, invert it and lower the opacity.
Any thoughts?

Seamless repeating pattern - using embedded images with clipping masks

Hi forum,
We struggle a bit creating a seemless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.
Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.
These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.
Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.
Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.
We tried various things in order to solve this issue. Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.
None of them worked good enough.
We though of just livetracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.
Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop or do you know any fancy tricks for issues like this?

You may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.
