Image size adjust on DVD
I am putting my pictures onto DVD. When I play the DVD some, not all, of my pictures are shorten and stretched, which makes them hard to see. I have been told that it is a resizing issue, but I can't seem to figure out how to change the image size. Is that possible and can anyone help? Thanks
Image --> Image Size. For DVD (Video) all images must be 480x720 pixels (NTSC) with a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9 (4:3) or 1.2 (16:9). For PAL this would be 576x720, 1.667 or 1.422 PAR. That's assuming you mean true slide shows. If you are merely using your DVD player's ability to display JPEGs from a data folder, then a look in the device's manual would hold the truth. The player would do all scaling "life" then and limits in file size and resolution may apply.

OK I have managed to converted NTSC anamorphic 16:9 video to PAL. When I export through Compressor with the 16:9 setting it comes out the correct PAL image size, but in DVD Studio Pro, even with all the right settings (16:9, PAL etc) it is still a little squished.
Do I need to change the image size? 1024x576 looks fine, but that is square pixels...will it look good on a PAL monitor? Can you detail what image size you're getting out of Compressor? When you open the .m2v file in QuickTime player, it's 720x404, correct?
You say things are a little squished in DVDSP. Mind elaborating on that please? That is, squished vertically (objects look shorter and fatter than they should) or horizontally (objects are taller and thinner than they should be)? -
I have Prem.El 12 and have used PE4 for years. I have a new PC that runs Win7Pro. The still images on the computer monitor are within the "safe margins". The still images after the movie has been burned to a disk are MUCH smaller on the TV screen. Is this an issue of 16:9 vs 4:3 ratios? My TV is 4:3. Can I tell PE12 to make the movie a 4:3?

Although I have seen your post of today in my Inbox Email Notifications, that post has not yet appears in this thread. It will probably will sooner or later. But, to keep things moving along....this is a copy of what I am seeing as your message of today in my Indox Email Notifications
Thank you for your patience in the time it is taking me to get back to you.
I am still trying to buy some DVD-RW discs and will hopefully do that in a
bit. Meanwhile, I have more info for you and some simple (I hope)
questions. If you want to insert your answers, that would be fine.
My camera (for stills and video) is set to the 4:3 ratio. It is capable of
being set to a 16:9 ratio if I wanted to do that. I looked in its TOOLS
menu and saw this info.
My TV is definitely a 4:3 TV. (I measured it with my tape measure and
divided W/L to get 1.33) The TV can show a 16:9 movie and just adds the
black bars on the top and bottom. Question: What will my old 4:3 movies
look like on a 16:9 TV whenever we buy one of those?
It seems to me that I want to set PE12 to the NTSC DV Standard you
mentioned.
I do NOT know how to “size your photos so that each has a 4:3 aspect”,
unless you mean doing that in Photoshop Elements, which I know how to do
(*see below)
I had NOT considered that I would need to watch the preset for the
‘Publish+Share’ step; so that’s good to know (I copied and pasted your info
for later use).
BTW, years ago when I had difficulties with my XP computer working on PE4
(had only 2 GB RAM), an Adobe tech told me to resize my photos * to have a
720 pixel width (the height would be automatically adjusted) to lower the
file size to something my computer could handle without crashing. (That
was back in the good ol’ days when Adobe support would actually talk with
their customers and try to help them in the first month)
My new computer has 16GB RAM. Do you think I still need to reduce file
size? One does lose some sharpness in the resizing process…..however,
these videos I’m making are travelogues and are for a fun way to view pics
and videos of a trip…nothing Earth shattering….and just a hobby to keep me
off the streets.
I truly appreciate the time you take to help me (and others). I was even
tempted to try to install my old PE4 on my new computer just to be able to
enjoy my hobby again.
My reply to the above....
1. If you camera is giving you 4:3 photos and your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 is running on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, then leave
the photos as is unless you have a lot of photos and each has pixel dimensions sizes way over 1920 x 1080 pixels that are giving your computer resource issues. If you have to down size them because of computer resources, then copy the photos to a computer desktop folder and also create an empty folder on the computer desktop.
a. Photoshop Elements Editor, File Menu/Process Multiple Files.
Process Files form Folder
Source - browse to and select the computer desktop folder with photos to be resized
Destination - browse to and select the empty computer desktop folder
Image Size
Check Mark Next To Resize Images
(no check mark next to Constrain Proportions)
Type in Width = 1000 (set units for pixels)
Type in Height = 750 (set unites for pixels)
File Size
Check Mark Next to Convert Files To
Set for JPEG High Quality
The above should work fine for a NTSC DV Standard project with a burn to DVD disc with preset NTSC_Dolby DVD (4:3 video).
2. With regard to the TV Set and 16:9 video....when you have the DVD-player attached to the TV, do you have the opportunity to bring up a display of menus with
controls for Picture and Aspect Ratio? From what you have written so far, it looks like the answer is no. I am not sure how your TV DVD
player will handle 16:9.
Best do a mini test run
1. Project preset set manually to NTSC DV Widescreen (please refer to post 1 link)
A few photos sized for 1600 x 1200
In the Premiere Elements project, use the Safety Margins inner rectangle for text placement
Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc with preset = NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD.
See what that looks like on your TV DVD player.
If you discovered that your current TV DVD player can be set for a 16:9 display, then I have a preferred workflow for
NTSC DV Widescreen which typically gives best possible results. Hints of things to come.
Please review and consider. Thanks for the follow ups.

i created a new sparseimage. Now I want to use the disk tools to change the image size, but when I entered the new size number and submit, it was nothing happened and the size hasn't changed at all. I promise that I have enough space in my laptop. NEED HELP PLEASE!
Hey folks,
thanks for your answers. In the meanwhile I could find out that the reason is my nested layout. I tried out some combinations and the image got scaled. So this was the reason.

Dear All
I am big Aperture user, but a bit of a technical novice I'm afraid - at least when it comes to DPI....
I take RAWs on my 5d Mk 2. Image files are procesed in Aperture / Photoshop. I then export JPEGS for distribution (Apple TV, prints for friends and family, burning to DVD etc)
I export full size JPEGS (image sizes can be about 25meg).
My question is....what DPI should I have Aperture set on to ensure top quality prints? I normally print 9 x 6, but would want the ability to increase sizes as required.
Is there a relationship / optimum setting between DPI and image size? Should I alter this if the JPEG is for different uses (priniting, burning to DVD etc).
Many thanks for any help
PaulPaul,
Photos from your camera and in Aperture have a dimension in pixels -- your camera can produce image files of 5,616 x 3,744 pixels. It is only when setting a resolution that ppi (pixels per inch) comes into play -- the total number of pixels is independent of that resolution. Printers reference quality as dpi, and this does not directly reference any ppi, but of course the ppi may limit what dpi the printer can actually apply. When printing from Aperture the pixels (if cropped, those remaining) will all be used and the ppi will automatically be adjusted to fit the paper size you are intending to use. If you are printing from Aperture, there is no reason to convert to a JPEG to use for that purpose.
If you do convert and export a JPEG, then if at original size, the full pixel dimension of the image will be maintained, and if later printing in Photoshop, say, then it will adjust to fit the paper. A JPEG to use with a DVD slideshow will have to be changed to use the pixel dimension that fits the media, but some software will do that behind the scenes, if exporting from Aperture solely for that purpose you might want to customize that to fit within something like 720 x 720, 1024 x 1024, 640 x 640, etc. When this takes place the total pixels are resampled, and the image is rescaled to be represented by fewer pixels. Aperture does seem to use PPI and DPI interchangeably, btw, but see:

Photoshop cropping to correct image size for SP
Ok, this is my first attempt for support here. I've looked quite a bit at other questions that might be similar but can't seem to find my answer.
I'm trying to prepare about 150 pictures in photoshop for a gift DVD presentation. Unfortunately most of the shots are portrait and of course the screens are landscape. I'm wondering if there's a way I can crop these pictures before bringing them over to SP? In the photoshop cropping option I don't get pixels but rather inches. I've learned on the forums that I should try and have my pictures set at 720 X 534 at 72. However in the "image size" option of photoshop when I change the height pixels it automatically changes my previously set width pixels which I has set at 720. AND, what it an even greater concern is that the image size option just makes my pictures smaller but does no cropping. I'd sure like to decide where all these portrait pictures get cropped myself rather than having SP I guess automatically cut them to size to fit the screen.
Appreciate any assistance. I'm using CS3 and SP4You will need to scale them and then drop them into a proper template (there should be DV menu templates with CS3, have not got my copy yet, but CS2 had them - should be there when you select File->New)
Take a look at the action and title safe lines also in the template, you are going to want all the photos to be inside the small area.
In order to see what you want to see from the pictures you will need to adjust each one. -
I just got a new printer...Epson R3000...but have had this problem before. It's probably a simple fix, but I can't figure it out. I'm asking for printing on 8.5 x 11 and the image comes out 6.5 x 9.5 every time. Help please! And thanks!
The Epson site stated that the R3000 printer can print borderless however the quality will suffer in the expanded print area. Borderless is not supported on some heavy paper. To me the means your better off limiting you images size to the standard print area. There will be magins about 1/8" on the four sides so the print area on 8.5"x11" paper is 8.26" x 10.76"....
Take note of the print size set by the epson driver it may change depending on the paper type set. Note my first epson 4800 setup where I set 8.5" x 11" sheet paper from tray into the printer setting the driver set a smaller size for the paper which was reflected into the Photoshop Print preview. It shows paper is 8.499" x 10.999 with a small unprintable area across the top....

Use paper under normal conditions:
Temperature: 59 to 77 °F (15 to 25 °C)

Note:
Since the quality of any particular brand or type of paper may be changed by the manufacturer at any time, Epson cannot guarantee the quality of any non-Epson brand or type of paper. Always test a sample of paper stock before purchasing large quantities or printing large jobs.

There seems to be lots of confusion about image sizes and Apple iBookstore Support et al simply state that images should not be greater than 2 megapixels.
IBook Author Help > Photos and other images, states:-
Important: When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5117 states:-
Publishing to the iBookstore:
If most of your readers will be using the original iPad, scale down images in Interactive Image widgets to a width of 2048 pixels and all other images to a width of 1024 pixels.
Previewing on iPad, or exporting for distribution outside the iBookstore:
You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by scaling down images in Interactive Image widgets to a width of 2048 pixels and all other images to a width of 1024 pixels.iBA help deals with exporting books OUTSIDE the store and simply advises that you can help none Retina viewers by having a smaller image. No help at all really - but suggests that the use of images 2048 is OK. that would indicate 2048 x 1536 or 1496. No mention of what resolution should be used.
iBookstore support basically reapeat this.
So to ease life in getting books accepted, should we all use 1024 x 768 @72ppi for iPad & iPad 2 and now iPad mini. ????
and use 2048 x 1536 @ ?? for The New iPad Retina display!
Both fail to mention HOW the books author would know which iPad a buyer/viewer will be using. Also if "we" only use 1024 x 768, those with Retina do not get an "enhanced viewing experience".
For a company that deals entirely with devices that use logical programming - there seems very little logic applied when it comes to dealing with a section of their business which by issueing iBA Free and wacking 30% of the top, must be adding to the $billions already stacked away in a corner somewhere.
iBA makes eBooks for use/display on iPads only. For months now since iBA became available, one of the most common requests on this forum is help with....image sizes.
It seems reasonable now when Retina is in use and eventually the iPad and iPad 2 will fade away - ditto the new none retina mini and ALL Apple devices and computers will be retina. So why not plan now! Surely images in shoudl be geared to deal with Retina displays. IF Apple would take that line maybe "Support" would have less work dealing with requests for help about images IF Apple accept that the next Stephen King may not have a clue how to deal with adjusting images sizes and simply state the required dimentions.
I make photo books and use 2048 x 1496 @150ppi - so far ten free books have gone into the store.
The suggestion about images for retina display as "standard" as been sent as feedback. For all those who are still confused by Apples image restrictions / requirements...
In the new Template chooser after the recent updates is "Antique". This template has a Chapter background image ( the olde world print of sailing ships in blue litho print style ). This print when opened in PS is 2771 x 1506 @72ppi. 2771x1506=4,173,126 pixels. This implies Apple supply a book which does not comply with its own requirements!
Higher image resolution applied to printed photo inmages, make the image sharper. If for example you wanted to print a wall poster 45inches wide, the image needs needs a higher resolution to cater for the size, BUT the same image used for a 45" poster will print 4.5" wide print on your own printer!
iBA full page is deemed to be 1024 x 748. resolution from Apple is 72ppi. An image with those specifications will be OK in iPad & iPad 2 - but not so sharp on a Retina display especially if zoomed larger on screen
Now it seems 2048 x 1496 - double the original image size is suggested for Retina.
You can change an image in PS i.e. 1024 x 748 and change resolution to 144. PS will double the pixel size as you change the resolution. OK, just change pixel sizes back to 1024 x 748 and reolution is now 144.
That indicates a sharper image which will be suitable for retina display and in fact all current iPad models.
Today my 11th photo book was notified as available in the iBook Store, all my images were pre-formatted at 2048 x 1496 @ 150ppi. ( 2048 x 1496 = 3.063,808 pixels!)
During delivery there were no issues flagged and after delivery no tickets.
So I suggest all those folk pondering images sizes follow my example, which is now proved to be accepatble!
One thing puzzles me though, I dont use all images as full page and they can be masked down to - say - 250 x 200. Should just make an image to fit the size I want to display ?? -
Hi. Is it possible to adjust the photo gallery module's code in a way that makes the image that gets displayed on selecting the thumbnail image display no larger than the browser? I have a client that's uploaded image that are pretty large and would prefer not to have to save them as smaller images if possible.
Thanks
GrantAre you by any chance saving as a JPEG or TIFF file?
The image size that Photoshop displays is the uncompressed file size - if you save in a format such as JPEG the image is compressed, which will result in a smaller file size.
Below is a comparison of the same image in Photoshop versus the compressed file saved to my computer:
Here's a more technical explanation of what's going on: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/15184/why-does-photoshop-show-my-jpeg-files-unusu ally-large
EDIT: If you want more accurate control over the image file size when saving, try going to File > Save for Web... You'll be able to choose your file format, and then see the resulting file size in the bottom left-hand corner of the window:
I hope this helps!
Cheers,
Kendall -
Can someone assist me with changing image size and resolution. each time I change the width the height changes and vice/versa?
There's a chain link between width and height. The point is to keep the aspect ratio the same, otherwise your picture would get stretched.
You click on the chain-link to shut that off and you can adjust width and height separately.
Also could you give us your version of Photoshop, what OS you are running it on (Windows 7 for example) and what exactly you want to do with your document?
Resolution is the print term for how many pixels will be printed on an inch of paper. It doesn't apply if your image is intended for screen viewing.

PS 6 locks up when I try to use the image size tool
My system is Windows 8.1 64 bit
All the other tools seem to be working OK.
When I try to use the image size tool PS just locks up and the only way to exit the program is using Task Manager??

Hi, as an Aperture newbie I am looking for a way to resize images in Aperture. Ie, the equivalent to Photoshop CS2's 'Image>Image Size', which allows me to, for example, just increase the pixels per inch of an image. For example I have been doing this to some old 72 pixels per inch photos I have been using for an iPhoto photobook (before I got Aperture) as the lower resolution version was causing the photobook to have an exclamation mark over the image (warning - too low size / resolution)
Sorry if this seems a bit garbled, but I do not know the correct terminology, all I do know is that if I increase the pixel count to, say 150 per inch, iPhoto's books are happy with the images
Any advice appreciated - thanksI presume Elements, like full-blown Photoshop, has no real organisational ability at all (as far as I can see). Basically you load, work on and re-save one photo at a time, to whatever folder you want the result in.
I do find annoyances in Aperture, but what I like is the versioning aspect of it when changes are made to a photo. There's no need to create an adjustment layer, or duplicate an image before work in order to retain the original.
I know Steve Jobs has this paranoia about things looking clean and minimising buttons (just look at a Mac remote control or the iPhone) but sometimes function really is more important than form. Compared to Photoshop there's MASSES of stuff that's missing from Aperture.
I don't expect to ever be able to add a 'plastic wrap' effect (for example) to an image in Aperture but the resize thing seems a no-brainer to me.

Changing resolution and image size doesn't change result on screen?
I'm using Photoshop CS3. I am trying to change the resolution of several images that will be printed in a newspaper. So the current images are 72 ppi and really huge -- for example 36 x 27 inches (document size), and when I change them to 300 ppi, the image sizes shrink to about 8 x 6 inches, as I expect. But the image I see on the screen doesn't change. So, for example, when I open up the image originally, it's at 33% and the entire image is visible. After I change the resolution, and the image size has changed accordingly, the image still appears the same and it remains at 33%. Shouldn't the image shrink on the screen since its size has shrunk? Or if it remains the same on the screen, shouldn't the percentage shift? I mean if the document size is now 8 x 6, it should be able to be displayed at 100% and not fill my whole screen... I'm so confused. Thanks...
gradded,
The "Document Size" area of the Image Size dialog is just to indicate the size (in inches) that your document will be printed. The ppi adjustment has nothing to do with what is displayed on your monitor. Your monitor doesn't care anything about ppi. The monitor contains a certain number of pixels and after you change that ppi setting, the monitor will still have that same number of pixels.
As long as you leave the "Resample Image" box unchecked, your image size (Pixel Dimensions) will not change. You will see no change on your monitor. If you check the "Resample Image" box, then your image size (in pixels) will change.
Hope this helps. -
How set image size open raw file?
How to set image size/resolution when opening a raw file in pse 11 editor??
win 7 pro; pse 11 settings: edit>preferences>print resolution = 337.596, screen resolution 109 dpi( 27 inch, dell U 2711). Originally print resoltuion was set to 240 dpi but was changed in case this was causeing a problem. CRAW v 7.4.0.137
Camera alpha 65, image size is: 6000x3376 dpi; (83.33x46.88 inch)
Problem is: Currently when I edit a RAW file in CRAW and then open in pse editor image size is: 6000x3376 px; 25x14.667 inches at 240 dpi ( by ration this corresponds to:17.773x10 inch at 337.6 dpi)
I am trying to change settings so the raw file opens as: 17.776x10 and anywhere from240 to 337.6 dpi
whatever works or is esiest to set.
My settings are for use in creating blue ray dvd movies and with cropping and editing printing high quality pictures for family.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. That's a Sony Alpha SLT-A65?
Are those pixel dimensions of 6000 x 3376 the size the camera raw files came out of the camera?
You can't really change the resolution that the photoshop elements version of camera raw opens the the files into the pse 11 at.
(i think 240 is the default for most cameras)
You can however set the resolution with Image>Resize>Image Size if you need to for printing or other uses.
In the Image size dialog uncheck Resample Image and enter the resolution. -
How do I change the dimensions of an image? The Image Size dialog box will not allow me to change dimensions. I am taking an online class and the Image Size dialog box looks different than the one I am seeing in Photoshop CC. It has the option to change the dimensions.
When you say chage the dimentions, do you mean crop the image and adjust the size of the image at the same time, or do you mean you want to just resize the image? Can you post a screen shot of what you're trying to do?
