Image Stabilization in CS5 (no Mercalli Support)

I have preordered CS5, and currently make use of the mercalli FX plugin to stabilize shaky video clips.  It doesn't appear that mercalli will be compatible with CS5 for a while, is there some other plug in I can use to provide high quality image stabilization?
Has anyone used motion stabilization in After effects and compared it to what Mercalli does?
For now I guess I will stabilize clips in Premiere Elements, export them, then use the pre-stabilized clips in CS5 but that will get cumbersome fast.
Are there any really high quality motion stabilization plug ins that will be compatible with CS5?  Has anyone here compared Mercalli to other solutions, and found one that's better?

Using the new version is far easier than the old, as you no longer have to select the best preset - the software now does this automatically in the initial analysis.  It is still possible to tweak the various individual settings manually.  With the old version you had to buy the expensive "Expert" version for this feature, but this time around there is only the one version - the expensive one of course!
As far as I know, the new version is available to existing users only, on special request.  It is expected to be generally available at the end of this month, and the help files will be with it then.
You do have to watch for a number of potential pitfalls:
field order - Mercalli is not good at detecting this automatically when used as a Premiere plug-in;
treatment of borders - an inevitable consequence of all stabilisation is that the area of video moves within the frame, leaving blank areas at the edges.  these vary from frame to frame and there are three alternative ways of handling this.  the new version is less clear in this, to me at least.  I normally zoom the video to eliminate the black borders.
transitions - if you apply Mercalli to a clip in your timeline and then apply transitions to the end(s) of the clip, the analysis will have to be done again, as you have introduced previously unconsidered areas to the clip.  I normally apply Mercalli to the clip on a second timeline, render and export the clip, making sure that I include all the material that I may want to use, if I apply transitions.  I generally apply colour correction, etc before exporting to avoid as far as possible quality loss due to repeat rendering.  I usually apply 10% sharpen filter at this stage too.  The new version offers a stand-alone version, which I like very much as it marks in red areas of the video in which extreme correction has to be applied, opening up scope for selecting the "less-unstable areas of video for use.
I have never used either After Effects or Mocha, but I have used all the other commercially available stabilisation software, and Mercalli gives by far the best results of the half dozen or so.  I have tried  the New Blue stabilisert, but I could not get on with it.Most of the others I have used are no longer available.  You could try SteadyHand from Gooder Video.

    From www.eventdv.net ...
Rule No. 1 in most event videography is to use a tripod, monopod, or other steadying device whenever possible. While most of us follow this rule most of the time, there are always candid shots and audience B-roll that are challenging enough to get without a support device, and even the best among us may end up with hand-held shots that are shakier than wed like. At some point in every other project or so, youll likely find yourself wishing for some form of image stabilization software.

Mercalli works after a fashion with CS4. It will only work with untrimmed clips, and the results are not good - it does stabilise, but it plays havoc with levels, saturation, etc. Pro-Dad produced a service pack way back in November 2008, but since then all has been quiet.
SteadyMove will install, provided you direct it to the En_US plug-ins folder, but it does not work, and the unlock key does not work either. Those of us who bought this have had a raw deal from 2d3, who simply abandoned development after Premiere CS2. Amazingly they are still expecting to sell it at a price which equates to several hundred pounds!

  • Motion 4 supports image stabilization for pictures?

    Hi everyone!
I am just wondering, if Motion4 supports an image stabilization for pictures like jpegs? Well, i have created some hyperlapse/walklapse's and want to
    stabilize it as well...
    Thank you very much!
    best,

  • Mercalli image stabilization plugin on sale

    http://www.digitaljuice.com/products/products.asp?pid=591
Great price for excellent image stabilization plugin. I use it all the time and it works very well EXCEPT:
it does not play well with dissolve transitions and will not render at all.
SOLUTION: I make a cut at the beginning and end of each dissolve transition and stabilize the material between transitions. I use this plugin to stabilize hand-held camera footage and it works very well. I have not used it extensively with other transitions as I tend to be very conservative with my scene transitions.
For $59 it can't be beat.

    >Might it not be better to stabilize the entire clip and then export it back out to use in your projects?
In most cases, yes. But consider the case where only part of a continuous shot needs stabilization. If you stabilize the whole clip, the steady portion is processed unnecessarily, and motion is added that wasn't there before.
If you razor the clip, the continuity of the shot is broken at the cuts between the portions that are stabilized and those that are not. The result is not good.
SteadyMove Pro is less effective than Mercalli, and renders a lot slower. But SMP is keyframeable, while Mercalli is not. I would love to be able to animate the Mercalli settings.

  • Image stabilization

    Hi RobSher1,
We run two Dell computers one specifically designed for CS5 premiere Pro ,
however we were not told by sales that there was no image stabilization in
the product and the tech support was coming from India and unfortunately the
tech very very hard to understand if not impossible and the connection was
    poor.
Because of the nature of our operation we do not need the complication as
advised, we wasted 2.5 hours trying to get an answer to-day,  your products
are so good we will continue to use them , but , your terch support and
sales advice is not up to date unfortunately.
We will continue to use your products.

    Hi Todd,
You are right the Forum is the best way to go , and yes to our KIWI Friend shooternz, the doc has just operated on the back of my head and I was feeling not the best, but, all is well. And for all those others re Steadymove Pro , yes it was a 3rd Party plug in from 2D3 and supplied by Adobe for the early Premiere Pros 1.5.1 and I think 2 which we still use and it works very well at a pinch, and that is if we do simple editing, and yes I did know a little about After Effects before I asked the tech to confirm., yes shooternz , I SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE IT,.I AM COMING TO YOUR LOVELY COUNTRY to shoot some HD and rest.
    Cheers to all
And yes, Craig I would give my army medals or better still the  Order of Video Editing , to you, Todd and in particular Bill , but, not excluding all the others who come to my rescue in the lonely hours of dispair ?..

  • Which image stabilizer do you prefer?

Cost is not a factor. I typically only work with AVCHD videos. Which image stabilizer would you recommend? What are the pros and cons?
So far I read up on proDAD Mercalli V2, vReveal, and Mocha for After Effects. I haven't tried After Effects so I'm guessing that I will have to learn that too.

From my experience shooterNZ is right again, AVCHD could be either 13Mbps amateur or 25Mbps professional and I would not use the 13Mbps stuff, in any case the stabilizer in Premiere Pro or Premiere Elements maybe as good as you can get, but , it does magnify the pixels and with normal camera movement will make it look like running on a railway track most of the time, but  really bad stuff  .....not a good look.  Re -shoot or Frame Hold if movement in subject is not a consideration

  • HT1338 Imovie Crashes when I try to do image stabilization

I Movie 11 crashes when I try to do an image stabilization. It wasn't doing that before but has started now.
    Please help

    [Have you seen this article?|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2558]
    It suggests importing at 960x540.
If you prefer to edit at full 1920x1080 (and why wouldn't you?), get the free app called MPEG Streamclip and convert the h.264 files from the Canon to Apple Intermediate Codec in 1920x1080 (e.g. current dimensions). This will produce a larger file because the Apple Intermediate Codec uncompresses the h.264 so that every frame is a full frame. However, you can edit in 1920x1080 with no crashes.

  • 808 Pureview image stabilization?

So it's been a bit since those who have purchased the 808 Pureview to have put it through tests and reviews and whatnot. The cameras pretty impressive (although I also feel that the lower res display screen allows for the camera to be super impressive - more so than it truly is).
Nonetheless, I have a quirk in my 808 when taking video of a roaring fire with image stabilization on. Has anyone else tried this? If the video mode is on automatic or scene and if the fire is the focal point, all is well, but if the fire becomes secondary point of reference in the shot, the stabilization goes crazy and causes the screen to violently shake even though my hand is quite still... Never have I ever experienced such a phenomenon and was curious as to whether or not this is true for all cameras/devices with digital image stabilization.
It's a great way to show a beautiful picture and instantaneously cause motion sickness in a matter of seconds!
thought I'd inquire to see if this is normal.

  • How do I save image and text as a single image in InDesign CS5.0?

How do I save an image and text as one image in InDesign CS5.0? NOT 5.5.
I need to save the image as a 72-dpi, jpg file for ePub purposes. I designed a book and am handing it off to someone for ePub.
    This is what I've tried:
    1) Copied from InDesign, pasted into a PhotoShop doc as a Smart Object. Saved it as 72 dpi jpg, then imported back into ID.
    2) Took a screenshot of ID page, placed it in PS, saved as 72 dpi, imported into ID
    3) Saved page as a PDF from InDesign, then saved PDF as 72 dpi jpg, then imported into ID.
    4) Save page as a PDF from InDesign, placed into Photoshop and saved
as 72 dpi, then imported into ID.
    5) Saved as an EPS from InDesign, placed in PS, then imported back to ID.
In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
    HELP!!!

In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
Naturally what you did will result in rasterized text. Did you preview with high quality settings?
Are you sure the people who will handle that downstream need pixel images and do you have the exact pixel dimensions needed?
Why did you place the image back in Indesign, by the way?

  • How do I add an alt tag to an image in Photoshop CS5 so that it is web ready?

How do I add an alt tag to an image in Photoshop CS5 so that it is web ready?  My web developer wants me to send him all of my images with an alt-tag assigned so that he can automate the ADA accessibility of the website. I know when I choose to "Save for Web & Devices," I have the option of how much metadata I want to include to the levels of : None, Copyright, Copyright and Contact Info, All Except Camera Info, All.  I don't want the audience to be able to view all of the metadata because a lot of it is sensitive with administrative notes.  Any ideas?

To anyone else who may encounter this issue in the future, here is a work around:
    File > File Info:
Sacrifice a metadata field in the description tab.  I chose document title and description. Click OK.
File > Save for Web and Devices:
    Choose to save All Metadata.
Leave things here on your end, and have the web-developer map the code to display only the appropriate metadata field.

  • Is it possible to add a barcode image generator API on HTMLDB that support

    Hi All,
Currently we create Barcodes images using a Java solution - open source API called Barbeque.barcode.servlet. Is it possible to add a barcode image generator API on HTMLDB that support multiple formats?
    Our current process:
All jobs created in our system require a barcode which is then printed onto a cover sheet for each job (refer example). We also currently have individual barcodes printed on a single feed barcode printer for attaching to jobs sheets. We also print A4 sheets of barcodes with the Field Technican id number on that we sent out to them.
    Thanks in advacne
    Manoj

It certainly is possible to call Java from PL/SQL and so therefore from APEX.
The process is fairly well documented online and there's a well cited example of calling Apache FOP within these forums.
You may however need to do a little work to wrap your Java library using static methods in order to do this.
    Regards
    Ben

  • Opening Lightroom images in photoshop cs5 ACR

Is there any way to edit Lightroom 3.0 images in Photoshop Cs5 ACR? If I choose Edit in Photoshop the image goes directly to photoshop and bypasses ACR. I have tried creating an ACR option in Preferences but cant find the ACR file. Can anyone help?

No...and there is no reason to do so. Lightroom and Camera Raw share the exact same processing pipeline–assuming you are using the same rev version. The only way to take a raw image into Photoshop and use the Camera Raw dlog is to open as a Smart Object which will give you the SO version of Camera Raw inside the Photoshop document.
