Image Thumbnails only sometimes (in Finder, on desktop)?  Why?

I save many pictures daily from the net by dragging the image to my desktop. Everytime I do this, the file appears as the Jpeg "folder paper" (like the preview icon) with the file name.
Sometimes, then, I will edit the image (usually in Photostudio because it's fast to boot) and resave with the same file name - as a replacement. When I do this, 90% of the time the saved file will display a tiny thumbnail of the image instead of the "preview icon".
I would like to have all of my .jpeg and .jpg images displayed in this way in both the Finder and on my Desktop. How do I do that?
Thanks
PowerMac G5 2x2   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It's because PhotoShop is saving thumbnails in it's files.
Dragging a file will rarely, if ever, produce a thumbnail of the graphic.
You can open them in PS and re-save them, you'll then get a thumbnail.
See PhotoShop / Preferences / File Handling.

  • Thumbnails Not Appearing in Finder

I posted this in the Leopard forumn, but I haven't gotten any response. I hope someone here can help.
I am having a strange problem with image thumbnails not appearing in Finder. I am editing some very large TIF files on a Macbook that is running Lion. These images are edited on an external drive, and when I hook the drive up to my main iMac, which is running Leopard, the new images I have created in Lion do not have thumbnails. The only way that they will appear is if I open the images in Photoshop and just resave them on the machine running Leopard. This method poses a problem because each image takes about 5-8 minutes to open, and another 5-8 to save. I have hundreds of images and don't have the time to do that to each one.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?

I've tried repairing disk permissions, as well as deleting the finder plist file, and neither of those things work.

  • Error #2036, only sometimes

    Hi,
I am unable to load an image, but only sometimes (using
Loader). I have a swf that tries to load images residing on the
same server in a subdirectory just next to where the swf is. 1-5%
of my users get the error #2036, when they try to load the file. As
they are all loading the same swf it is not a problem of a misspelt
    URL.
I don't understand what this error means.
To me the error message is very unspecific - does anyone know
    anything about this?
Could it be any of the following?
    A. File not found
    B. DNS not resolved (I am using the full DNS to link the
image). (Users from US, Philippines and Sweden all get this error)
    C. User internetconnection broken
    D. User internet connection too slow (some stuff indicate
    this is not the case)
    E. Security domain problem (doesnt seem likely, everything
    works most of the time)
Does anyone have any suggestions tips or ideas?
(this is on AS3, CS3, not Flex)

My guess is that the Script Time Limit in the Publish
Settings is coming into play. It may be that the download is taking
too long at times and so the script it timing out.

  • PS6 raw image thumbnails gone in finder

Recently upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and as a result raw images thumbnails no longer show up in finder windows. I use the finder for sorting hundreds of images - now it requires me to open Photoshop to see an image. Apple has always supported new version of Adobe raw - at lease for a while.
I know I could update the OS and probably solve this issue, but...
    1. I don't like being coerced into doing that and
    2. I like SnowLoepard better than the new OS.
Is there not some solution that respects my preferences as a user for at least a couple of years?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello Turlie,
1.) Make sure you have a backup
2.) Hold down command + option on your keyboard and launch iPhoto
3.) Check off the top 2 rebuild options only (they both mention thumbnails)
If that does not take care of it:
1.) Hold down command + option on your keyboard and launch iPhoto
2.) Check off the "repair permissions option"
3.) Allow this to complete, close iPhoto and do the rebuild again and this time with "Rebuild iPhoto library database..." only
If that does not take care of it:
Highlight everything in your library, right click on an image, and choose "Rescan"
If that does not take care of it, you can either restore from a backup you have BEFORE the issue started happening or go to your iPhoto Library (Usually located in ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library), right click on the library and choose show package contents, remove anything that says "faces".
WARNING: Removing these files will remove all your faces you've identified thus far. You'll have to re-do them. BUT, it should also resolve your issue.
    Hope that helps.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?  A new iMac will have Yosemite. Confirm.
what system version are you running? Download iPhoto 6 from the App store.  Did you?
what do you mean by "picture keeper"?
have you looked in the Applications folder for an iPhoto application?
is your iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder ?

  • When I start facebook, sometimes it loads ok. But, since v29, it often loads with no photo images or only some photo images shown..just empty boxes.

Facebook loads ok as far as text is concerned. But, it often loads without any of the photo images visible. Sometimes it loads with a few of the images visible. When the images are missing there are just empty boxes where the photos should be. I never had this problem until updating to the latest firefox v29. If you guys can't fix this problem, is there any way to revert back to an earlier version of firefox? tht version worked just fine.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.
*Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden Menu bar.
Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
Check "Tools > Page Info > Media" for blocked images
*Select the first image link and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list.
*If an image in the list is grayed and "<i>Block Images from...</i>" has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain.
Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the <b>permissions.default.image</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page should be 1.
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.

    a. What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    b. How were you not applying the video stabilizer to the whole video clip in the first place? Or, are you suggesting

  • Browser / Java Error - Random Image Thumbnails Do Not Load

A typical example of what problem I'm having is during a Google Image Search - you type in a search term and 15 image thumbnails pop up. Usually. Right now I get only 6-7 random thumbnails to be visible - the rest are blank boxes with broken icons or red dots in the corners. If I hit 'reload' - 3-4 new thumbnails will load, but 2-3 of the original thumbs go blank.
This happens on ANY web site that has image previews has the same problem: You Tube, Metacafe, Yahoo Images, Newspaper Sites etc..., and BOTH Safari and Firefox.
I'm positive it's a Javascript problem, but I cannot recall how to fix it. I fixed it once by deleting a cache file or cookies or something like that before, but since the newest system software upgrade, I cannot seem to find the answer.
Here's what has been installed recently:
OS X System Upgrade to 10.5.8 (Software Update)
    Firefox 3.5.2
    Safari 4.0.3
    Java 4 Mac 10.5 Update 4
    Adobe Flash Player 10UB
    Things I've tried:
-- Purging all caches, cookies and preferences - both browsers.
-- Delete Firefox 3.5.2 and install Firefox 3.0.9 instead - still a problem.
-- Purge all JAVA Cache files with Java Preferences utility (v. 12.3.0)
Anyone had this bug and figured out how to get rid of it? Web sites that are heavy with Java Scripting and thumbnails (Like Facebook or ESPN.com) are practically un-intelligible because of this glitch.
One thing that seemed to help in Firefox; by changing the View:Character Encoding to something other than default (Unicode UTF-8), the glitch would disappear, or at least MOST images would load. If I hit 'reload' on ANY web page, the Character Encoding would jump back to 'Unicode UTF-8' and the images would disappear randomly again. (I think this is just a glitch inside of a bigger glitch.)

    Hi,
I have the same problem, still no solution. Appeared since 10.5.8 update.

  • Problem saving an image to disk - sometimes its black??

Hi i'm trying to create a thumbnail of an image and save it to disk using Image and Graphics2D. The problem i'm having is that sometimes when i save the image its blank\black, it seems totally random in doing this i.e. it will work find one time and then not work the next time (i'm actually processing a whole folder of images in my program)
    Image image = new ImageIcon(imgfile).getImage();
    BufferedImage bi = new BufferedImage(100,100,BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    Graphics2D g2d = bi.createGraphics();
    if(image.getWidth(null) > image.getHeight(null)){
    // create landscape image thumbnail
    image = image.getScaledInstance(133,100,Image.SCALE_DEFAULT);
// here i'm cropping the image so that its square + focusing the center of the image
    g2d.drawImage(image,                               0,                              0,                              100,                              100,                              15, // start x coordinate                         0, // start y corodinate                         115,// end x corodinate                         100,// end y coordinate                         null);
    else...
If anyone could shed any light on to why this problem is occuring i would be really greatful, its driving me nuts! :P
btw: if anyone knows of a better way of doing this please let me know to. i'm sure u should b able to scale the image and crop it just using Graphics2D, just dont know how though...
    Many Thanks,
    Tom

some of the images that i'm processing are dark but there are many others that aren't, all images that are outputed are totally black.
I'm kind of suspecting that it may be a case of the image isn't being fully loaded when the scale\crop is performed. i have noticed that the larger the file\resolution the more likely it will be draw\saved correctly.,this leads me to beleave that the problem may lie in the loading...
I have been looking at MediaTracker as that seems to be meant for this sort of situation but all the examples i see involve JFrames\Applets which my program doesn't make use of. Am i right in thinking that MediaTracker requires a java.awt.Component when being created? is there anyway round of this or is there anything else you can think of that i could use to do a similar job?
    Many Thanks, Tom

  • Server unresponsive after restarting, only sometimes

    Hello,
I've been having an issue that will only sometimes occur after a scheduled server restart. My SBS 2011 Essentials server is configured to restart every Sunday so updates will apply. Most restarts occur normally and the server comes back up fine. However,
sometimes the server will restart and then enter an unresponsive state.
What I mean by unresponsive state is:
    - The power light on the server box is on, and the Ethernet status LEDs at the Ethernet connection are active.
    - The server will not perform its DHCP duties, causing all workstations to hang while trying to start up (Ethernet cable pull works around this and allows login with machine local users)
    - Setting a static IP on a workstation and attempting to remote desktop or even ping the server fails.
    - Physically using the servers monitor, keyboard and mouse to login fails, it will hang attempting to login to the administrator user.
The only way we have found to get the server up again is to restart it. Pressing the power button and waiting does not shut down the server at all, so, undesirably, we have to hold the power button down to do a hard power off.
After this happens I comb through the event log and look for issues but nothing really stands out, googling the event IDs usually just shows the things I find to be symptoms of the root cause, but I can never find the root cause. Interestingly, the event
log is completely clear from about 5 minutes after scheduled restart to the time we come in on Monday morning and have to give it a kick. Eg, Server restarts at 6am Sunday, last event log item is 6:05am and then nothing, until 7:30am Monday morning when we've
given it a hard power cycle.
Any ideas what I can look at to chase this down?

After some deeper parsing of the event log I found that two virtual box VMs starting as services were terminating for most startups, instead of starting well. I've added these two services to delay automatic start and they no longer terminate on the first
    start.
If anyone wants to analyse their startup events here's the script I wrote: http://codepad.org/6rUvYRdb
I'm not sure if this has/will fix the problem, since it only randomly happens on restart and we restart once a week.
If it happens again does anyone know what would be the best way to shutdown the computer? As I said above, pressing the power button does nothing, and it only responds to having the power button held down to do an abrupt power off.

  • Disable Image Thumbnails

Is there a way to disable the image thumbnails that appear in skype chat? I need to be able to see when an image is sent so is there a way to revert it back to when it showed up as a file transfer. I can't seem to find an option to disable the thumbnails which I figured there would be.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can disable showing images preview, but placeholder for these images will still be shown.
In Skype go to Tools -> Options -> IM settings -> Show advanced options. Uncheck the option: "Show images in conversations".
However, this will not change the saving behaviour of images sent to you. You will only see a notification of a new incoming file and the image will be saved to the default \media_messaging\media_cache\ location. To save it to another location you have to right click on the image placeholder and select Save as.

  • Applications Sometimes Hang Finder

    I relatively recently upgraded from a G3 IMac with 10.3 to a G4 IMac with 10.5.
I've noticed one or two discrepancies in performance quality which I initially ignored, but they've persisted long enough that they've become annoying and I really do want to resolve them. All issues occur only sometimes, but if I switch between a couple running applications enough I can sometimes cause them to happen.
1.) The first issue is that Finder hangs when I switch to it from a running application. I don't know why, or what sequence of actions causes it, but most often it will occur immediately after trying to click my desktop from Firefox or VLC.
I'll usually habitually click my desktop to shift out of the current application and to Finder. It won't and I only really end up noticing it when I start selecting or renaming files. When I try to select files, I can never deselect them, so I end up selecting more than I want in attempt to shake the issue. Also when I want to rename a file, the name text simply vanishes until I click away, and it returns to normal. I just can't rename files when this issue arises. All the while during whatever application I was leaving still appears in the menu bar even if I'm specifically selecting files in Finder.
I can only seem to shake the issue if I open a Finder window and click the window's menu bar area, when my menu switches back to Finder and I deselect and rename files again.
This is the biggest issue as it happens the most often.
2.) The second issue is a problem I encounter when I'm in the middle of renaming a file. Out of nowhere the name change text box will close when I type in a letter, and reopening it just leads to the problem repeating itself. A bit of fidgeting with windows and selections stifles the problem, but it's quite irritating when it comes up. Doesn't happen very often.
3.) And seems to have started happening. My third issue is that I'll quit an application like Firefox, Quicktime, or VLC, and then move to something else while it quits. I soon notice that it hasn't quit. The window's still open, the icon's still in the dock, and it's still "on". I don't get the "application is not responding" from the control-click or force-quit menus, and it immediately disappears if I click the still-open window, like it had already quit, but just forgot to leave my screen until I poked it.
So for the most part, it's just a bunch of issues with applications, selections, and renaming, and that ends up hurting when you're organizing lots of files.
Is this expected from a "top-heavy" computer? Is this an unresolved Leopard problem, or does my computer have the hiccups? I'm hoping it's the latter, cause I'd really like to fix it.

    Hi James
It sounds like you might have moved all your applications into the folder that's on your desktop, for one thing. First, close all your open applications (except for Finder). If any of them are still in the trash, get them out, and move them all back to the correct location. While many applications will work fine wherever they are, it's a good idea to keep them in the main Applications folder at the top of the hard drive.
Once the apps are back where they should be (and the desktop folder is empty), trash the desktop folder. Then, open a new Finder window, and click on the Macintosh HD icon in the sidebar. You should see your Applications folder on the right, which you can now pull into the sidebar to create a shortcut.

  • How do I drag simultaneously mulitple images viewed in Preview to Finder. I know how to do one image at a time by dragging

How do I drag multiple images simultaneously from Preview to Finder. I know how to do one at a time. However since I typically shoot at 12 frames per second, sports photography, I have a lot of images to move of one athlete while in motion.

    (A personal footnote):
Why are you using Preview at all? I hardly ever use it for anything, finding it very limited.
I am only an amateur photographer, but I much prefer GraphicConverter which, for example, in batch mode would do much of what you ask.
IMO it is probably the best shareware application ever written for the Mac.
If you don't know it, give it a try:

  • I've lost the finder and desktop icons

Purchased new iMac 10 days ago but did not immediately transfer data from old computer.  When I did, I transferred from a Backup on Time Machine using Migration Assistant .  I did not merge the two users I had the New Jon (new computer)  and the Old Jon (old computer transferred to the new one).  I transferred applications and documents but did not transfer the computer and network settings. My reason for two users was that I knew there were programs on the old iMac (10.9.5, early 2008) that did not work on 10 and I was hoping to cherry pick.
However, the new iMac (10.10.2) wasn't seeing any of the desktop files in either user from the old Mac.  I decided to delete Old Jon keeping New Jon and starting over again.  When I did that, none of the Old Jon applications were deleted and are usable for both users AND the Finder is missing.  Clicking on Finder it says that the Finder can't be opened.  The finder had been working on both users on the new computer up to the point at which I deleted Old Jon.
Interesting to note that at one time (I don't remember if I was upgrading from 9 to 10 or it was a 10 upgrade) but the Finder  on the old Mac also disappeared.  I was on forums and seemed to be a problem that many people had.  For me, the only thing that seemed to work was opening Activity Monitor and force quitting Window Server and after that the finder and desktop icon showed up.  So I'm thinking it must be a program or file I have on the old computer.  So, I thought I'd try downloading 10.10 figuring if I reinstalled I would get where back to an "out of the box" computer.
Even though it said I was downloading 10.10 the new install said it was still 10.10.2.  All of the applications from the old Mac were still there and there was still no finder.  I created a couple of new identities  in the New Jon computer.  Both of them have access to the finder but the Main identity does not.  I have noticed that if you log under under one of the new identities and then go to the Main identity the Finder is there - but not if you log into the Main Identity first.
Can anyone give me hint as what I might do to where I might look or steer me to another forum?   Hope this isn't too confusing.  Thank you so much
