Image to ascii art and back converters

I've wanted to find a good image to ascii art converter for ages but have never found one that did everything I'd hope. I had another look today and rediscovered aalib and libcaca. I haven't look into the libraries themselves because I don't want to write my own application (yet?).
libcaca's img2txt looked promising at first but it seems to be limited to the basic 16 color terminal palette even in urxvt-256-unicode. Is there some setting that determines this? I would really like to try to watch videos in mplayer using 256 colors or more. I've tried using the different driver env variables but they all seem to use 16 colors. It even uses 16 colors when generating TGA image files.
I also discovered jp2a which is great so far. It's slightly annoying that it's limited to jpg (wtf would anyone choose jpg as your input format for a conversion utility?) but imagemagick's "convert" and some piping do the trick. Again it seems that jp2a only uses the basic 16 bit color palette when printing to the terminal, but it has a full palette when generating html. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be able to generate image files, only direct console ascii and HTML.
For now I have added jp2a to tiv as an optdep. It uses the full terminal color palette and can even adapt the palette per image to make the most of it. I get some nice ascii output now with "tiv -r 0.6 -a -j /path/to/img". But that as well lacks the ability to convert back to an image format.
Is there nothing that can convert image files to (full-palette, i.e. >= 256) colored ascii art and then convert the output to its own image? I would really like a way to do batch conversions (e.g. to convert films, if no mplayer codec can do it).
In particular, does anyone have any simple ideas for converting an HTML-encoded ascii image to a real image file? I expect that it would be relatively simple to use webkit to create a simple utility for this, but I doubt that it would be  easy to do quickly without any experience of webkit.
*sigh*

Just use gnome-web-photo:

  • Image Lr3 to CS5 and back looks wrong

I just installed Lr3 (was using 2.7) and CS5 (was using CS3).  From Lr I took an image to retouch in CS5 and when it came back to Lr it looked terrible - the exposure had changed at least a stop and I did not do that in PS.  What happened?  Do I have a setting wrong?  I loved how I had Lr2 set up and I have lost it all.  In Lr2 the edited image would automaticaalycome back with a T (for tweaked) added to the name and look like it did when it left PS.

I bought Lr3 a long time ago and did not install it (dumb but I had my reasons at the time).  I was thinking maybe I should just get Lr4 now but I saw advice to wait because it was slow.  I would have to pay for it at this point I'd bet. Do you think I shoulw just get Lr4 so I don't have to go through this grief again soon?
I have imported the image in Lr and have made my adjustments there as always and then taking it into Ps for retouching and when it returns it is fubared.

  • ASCII ART with SMS

Is anyone know what is the structure of ASCII Art in SMS format? some i found is using line.separator, which allow do draw alots of ASCII art in 160 characters...
im trying to create an application on server which able to create ASCII ART and send as SMS to any mobile phone, is anyone has any idea? this project is just started and im currently doing research now. Or any sites to refer?
    regards,
    howsen

Sure, you could use \r or \n (or both) as a line sep in an SMS. But note, that lots of phones do not have monospaced fonts, and therefore ASCII art will just be rubbish (apport for the various screen sizes you'll have to take account for).
Still, sounds like a fun idea ;)

  • When I Image Trace in CS6 and then expand it shifts the art?

For my work I use the Image Trace a lot. When I Image Trace something and then expand it, it shifts the art over. Every once in a while I wouldn't mind but it does it every time and I have to go back and nudge it back into place by setting the original layer as a template and then looking at it in Outline mode. Here is an example of the shift...
I never had this issue in any other version of Illustrator and I have been working with it since 8. When I have multiple items to Image Trace on one of my jobs and I Image Trace on each one individually, it does it in random directions. Sometimes down and to the right, sometimes up and to the left and sometimes it doesn't do it at all.
Here are the settings I am using...
I am image tracing 1200ppi bitmaps and I don't need it to be any more exact than it is now becuase I am then offsetting it .05" and using that as a relief for our products. But ignoring the shift would make one of our CNC machines mill through the art. Anything to stop "THE SHIFT" would be great. I am using up precious time in my pre-production schedule to be constantly doing this.
    Sincerely,
    Jason

I just checked that and it seems to have no effect. it still expands off center. Here is a screenshot of it after Image Trace with Pixel Preview on...

  • Convert image from RGB to CMYK and back to RGB

    Hey.
I wonder if anyone has experience with converting image from RGB to CMYK and back to RGB?
I had a TIF in RGB then converted to CMYK but I figured that it might be better to keep in RGB, so I converted back. I read that it supposed to cause some loss in the data, but I can't see anything on the image, it is still very huge and the 2 RGB files has the same size as well. Is there a way to compare the resolution of 2 images somehow, or how can I see what I lost through the 2 conversions?
    Thanks for help

I had a TIF in RGB then converted to CMYK but I figured that it might be better to keep in RGB, so I converted back.
The original RGB data is not being restored by converting from the CMYK version, so the term "keep" seems inappropriate.
What are the actual Color Spaces (ICC profiles) involved?
Is there a way to compare the resolution of 2 images somehow, or how can I see what I lost through the 2 conversions?
How did resolution come into this?
To determine how large a portion of the image has been changed you could
    • make a flattened copy of the original image
    • place a flattened copy of the RGB->CMYK->RGB image on top of that and set it to Blend Mode Difference
    • add an Adjustment Layer (Curves for example) to brighten the image

  • Bringing pdf from InDesign Photoshop and back to InDesign leaves image and text extremely blurry

    I'm running CS4 on a Macbook Pro, OS X.
I created a booklet in InDesign, and I want to display it as though the booklet had been photographed from above. For multiple reasons, taking pictures of the actual booklet didn't work, so I used pictures of a blank booklet.
I saved the files in InDesign as pdf, then placed them on the photoshop file of the blank booklet. I changed the layer display from regular to "Multiply" so the shadowing on the booklet pages shows through. They look great in Photoshop-- the images are still vectors, from InDesign, and the files are at 300 ppi, at the exact dimensions for print.
I save them from Photoshop as pdf, and place the finished pdf in InDesign to lay out for display. However, in InDesign, the images are extremely pixellated and distorted-- for example, letters are missing from words, hairlines have strange gaps that are not in the original file, and the overall look is very poor.
I have tried saving as jpg, psd, pdf, eps, tiff, flattened tiff-- you name it. I cannot figure out why the file looks bad in InDesign.
May be relevant: The file is a composite-- I photoshopped multiple spreads of the blank booklet, placed, and used layer masks to make them look as though they were laying on the same surface and had been photographed together. These layers are flattened, and the placed files are each in their own layer.

Hi, I can't follow your post...I suggest taking a screenshot in photoshop of your image detail at 100% actual pixels, along with your layers pallet:

what compression settings are you selecting in photoshop> save> Ps PDF (screen shots are very usefull here to make your point)?

  • How do I place on ID a halftone image made in PS and keep the halftone?

I'm really not finding anything about this, so i'm starting to think I can't do it. I'm using CS5. Here it goes:
I'm making a magazine layout as a college excercise. I want to use halftone images in one or two ink (some only black, others only cyan, or magenta, or both, etc) for this and I want the halftone to be noticeable but not so big that it turns my photo into an abtract image or a weird Lichtenstein. To try it, I grabbed one of the images in PS, separated the channels in different layers, used the halftone effect and got exactly what I wanted.
The thing is, when I place it on ID, it looks like... well, really bad. I already tried with High quality display.
    Other things I tried:
Placing the image as both JPG and PSD. (No difference)
Exporting (printing) to PDF and looking at the result (really bad).
I haven't tried printing it on paper yet, but I assume it shouldn't change much, right? And i haven't tried with different dot sizes either, I'm going for that now.
FYI, this is for single digital printing, and not offset, it won't be sent to a printer.
Any help, advices or comments will be much appreciated. Any grammar correctiosn will be appreciated to, as english is secon language to me.
This is the PS image (Screen print kills it a bit)
And this is the PDF output.

In addition to Peter's suggestion, the halftoned bitmap is line art so it needs more resolution to accurately draw the dots. So:
If you add color ideally it should be 100% value combinations so you don't have a printer screen interfering. Above is 100% magenta back with 100%cyan+100%magenta for the halftone line art

  • Creating ascii art in Illustrator

    Hello,
This is my first time posting and I'm hoping you can help me.
I'd like to color letters of a text so that from afar the colored letters look like an image. The perfect example is ascii art - each character is colored appropriately so that as a whole it depicts an image of some sort.
My question is this: How do you color each letter to an image I have already created? I've tried playing with opacity masks but that colors the text as well as the background [of the text]. I only want the text to be colored.
Can you please tell me how I can achieve this?
    Thank you.

I've tried playing with opacity masks but that colors the text as well as the background...
Don't use the artwork to mask the text; use the text to mask the artwork. Be aware, of course, an opacity mask does not address the problem of characters that are "split" by two adjacent colors:

  • Computer graphics: from ASCII art to animated GIFs

Today's state-of-the-artanimated GIFshave a proud history.ASCII art Image credit: Chris.comAt the dawn of the computer age, computer graphics were crude. Computers were best at manipulating numbers and text, so developers created programs that used alphanumeric characters to create images. Some programming courses assigned students the task of writing a program to generate banners of giant letters made of many smaller letters. This ASCII art could portray recognizable images, but at incredibly low resolution. In the early days of the personal computer, when bulletin board systems became popular venues for home computers to share files, ASCII art evolved into ANSI art, which used an extended ASCII character set and ANSI escape sequences to create 16-color images.ANSI art Image credit: norbert79One of the big competitors to individual...

I am afraid you will have to learn to live with conversion issues between Illustrator and Fireworks: Fireworks, although doing a very good job, is NOT Illustrator, and I found that complex artwork often includes parts that are very difficult for FW to retain in their original quality.
A work-around is to bring in the artwork in parts, and manually fix the broken bits and pieces as you go along.
And, of course, you can always save the Illustrator work as a very high resolution bitmap version, and import that into Fireworks. I mean: the graphics are produced in Illustrator, and they do not need to be editable in Fireworks, do they?
Anyway, it is curtains for Fireworks - it's no longer being updated or developed. Photoshop now has Generator, which is arguably a better approach to web export than Firework's aging slicing. The smart objects (including their new state option) and new alignment tools, and the many plugins and improvements make Photoshop quite useful as a replacement. Smart objects in Photoshop display even extremely complicated AI files without a hitch.

  • Clip art and messy borders?

    Hello all,
I upgraded from photoshop elements 6 to cs4.  PE6 had quite a few clip art and various photo art enhancements, but I don't see any in cs4, but I know they must be somewhere in there.  Can someone please direct me to the clipart.  I would like to put fancy squigly border pieces on the corners of my photos and I would like to get some of the edging borders that surroung the photos that look like chalky borders.  Please direct me on where to go
    Thank you!

Going back many versions, there used to be sample images included. Cannot recall if these were dropped in PS3, or PS4. There were few, though there were some ClipArt items, IIRC (may be thinking of AI).
As John points out, there are tons of libraries available for purchase, and if you have MS Office, MS has a ton of both stock photos, ClipArt and similar available. Do not know if that is available without Office.
There are also many sites that have a lot of decent ClipArt, and much of it is free, or reasonably priced.
The one thing to consider is the exact format of these. Some are bitmapped line art, and some are in proprietary formats, like WordPerfect's Graphics format. Others are Vector art and can be disassembled and reassembled at will. This will be easier in AI.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
