Image transfer from Lightroom 2 to Lightroom 4

If I currently have Lightroom 2 and have all my images stored in it, will installing Lightroom 4 from a new software disc make my current images in Lightroom 2 disappear?  Or do the images automatically transfer?

Just to clarify, your images are NOT stored in Lightroom, they are stored on you hard disk somewhere, where ever you put them. Your edits are stored in Lightroom.
There is nothing magic about what happens when you install and run Lightroom 4. The first time it runs, LR4 upgrades your Lightroom 2 catalog, so you can still work on all of your images (plus new ones) in Lightroom 4. There might be a dialog box or two asking if you want to do this upgrade. You should click on YES or OK or similar.

  • Image transfer from Nikon D810 to Lightroom fail

I have just bought a Nikon D810 and tried to download images directly from the camera to Lightroom 4.4 by using "Copy as DNG" and "Copy". Both failed and no images were imported.
I have tried it with a card reader (hama) as well. Same result - zero images.
What do I have to do?

Lightroom 5.6 is the oldest version of LR to recognize D810 raw files, so you’ll need to upgrade to use the process you’re describing.
If you want to copy the images by hand you can use the DNG Converter 8.6 (or newer) to convert the D810 NEFs from your card and specify a destination folder on your hard-drive, then those DNG copies of the images can be imported into the older LR 4.4.  I would recommend saving your NEFs somewhere, perhaps in a subfolder of where you've copied the DNGs, in case you decide to upgrade, or use non-Adobe software, at some point in the future.
The DNG Converter 8.6 is available on the Adobe Updates page:

If you have a license for Lightroom, you should be able to reinstall it from an installer disc or re-download it from Adobe after explaining the situation and clarifying the license issues. Either will be simpler than trying to extract and install it from a TM backup of a different Mac, I think. If it's anything like other Adobe products, it has bits and pieces all over the place that you'll have to find and put in their right places on your girlfirend's Mac.

  • Transfer from Aperture to Lightroom

I am a current Aperture user, including use of their database structure. I wanted to transfer to Lightroom in the most straightforward way possible. Could anyone offer assistance?

It can be a mess, but Lightroom has an Aperture Importer plugin that can help. I'd recommend you first use a small subset of your main Aperture library, and import into a test Lr catalog.
It also helps to do some prep in Aperture first, and understand the differences. For example, it makes a BIG difference if you manage your photos in Aperture (i.e. copy them INTO an Aperture library) or reference photos in Aperture (they remain outside of the Aperture library in regular Finder folders in say your Pictures folder).
Also, while many things carry over, photo adjustments (like say a bunch of color changes, dodging, etc) in Aperture do NOT. There are several ways to deal with that, but we'd need to know more. In general you have to export those adjusted versions from Aperture.
If you do have a lot of adjusted images you want to save, I'd also look at Aperture Exporter (note it runs FROM Aperture, and is an external application). It offers some features the IMporter doesn't. https://apertureexporter.com/ They have a demo available.

  • Images saving from Photoshop to Lightroom are saved way lighter

I first work on an image in Lightroom. Then, I sent a copy with LR edits to Photoshop where I continue to work on the image. When I am done editing in Photoshop and Save - the image goes back to LR, but the Photoshop Tiff copy in LR is far lighter than the image that was saved from editing in Photoshop. If I open the PS image from finder it looks fine - it is darker than the same file as seen in LR.

No problem. Waiting for a video rendering and upload to finish ;-)
If it is fixed in another account than it is highly likely that a develop preset or default gets applied to your images. This happens quite easily and has happened to me unknowingly too. Basically you would by accident have hit the Reset button in Develop while the option key was pressed. What you want to do is to go into Preferences->Presets and hit the button that says "Reset all default Develop settings". Then hit reset on your image. If none of that works, you can always trash the Lightroom preferences file. Quit out of Lightroom, go to the Finder. Hit command-Shift-G. Type ~/Library/Preferences/ in the display that you get to reveal the hidden by default preferences folder in your home account. Find the file that is called com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist (you might not see the plist extension on your computer) and drag that to the trash. Now start Lightroom again and your Lightroom should behave as if you just installed it. You might have to point it to your catalog file if it doesn't open with it there but with an empty catalog. File->Open Catalog-> select your main catalog.

  • Image Transfer from PC to Mac

How does one transfer all images from a PC to a Mac AND ensure that the meta data and tags are included?
At present I have my entire catalog backed up on an external hard drive ready to go.

Okay, you do know that there is no organizer in the mac version of PSE? You use bridge (included with PSE) or iphoto (included with your mac), or some other program for organizing photos. That said, both the programs mentioned will pick up metadata keywords, so you need to change your tags to keywords. To do this, go to File>Write Tags and Properties to File(s) in the organizer.
Check this with a couple of photos first to be sure it's working right. There are some files where it just won't work well, like raw files.
Other metadata is metadata and can be read by any program that reads metadata, including Spotlight (the OS X built-in search feature).

  • How do I import GPS information for all of my images from Bridge into Lightroom 5.3?

After importing my images into Lightroom 5.3, I discovered that the GPS location data was imported for some images, but not for others.  When I checked the metadata files for the same images in Bridge, the location data was present for all of my recently downloaded images.
Why would Lightroom import the GPS data for some images and not others?
Is there any way to import the location data from the Bridge metadata files into Lightroom?

    Tony,
Thank you for your suggestion.  I had already tried several approaches along those lines without success.  In the end, the GPS data was still present in Bridge metadata file for each image, but not in the Lightroom metadata files for the same images.
So, I went back to Lightroom, and did some further exploring on the internet for solutions.  Just as I was wondering whether or not the problem might be rooted in my download presets (i.e., setting copyright into, etc.), I stumbled across a reference by a Pentax owner that identified the same problem.  Here's the link:
    http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/203274-gps-data-not-importing-into-light room-4-2-a.html
In a nutshell, I can download all of the metadata, including the GPS location information, but only if I do NOT use any metadata presets.  If I use a metadata preset when downloading my images, no GPS data can be seen in the Lightroom metadata files, but it does import into Bridge's metadata files.  I've now tried this both ways, several times now, and have verified this result.
I also tried re-downloading images with no presets, and replacing (copying over) the image from my original download.  This did not solve the missing GPS data in the Lightroom metadata.  From this point, all that I could think of doing was removing all of my recent downloads from Lightroom, and starting over.  However, I'd already started editing my images, and I didn't want to lose that time.
So, I re-downloaded all of my recent images from my memory cards as a copy into each file without any metadata presets.  Then, after selecting the copy first, followed by selecting the original (order is important), I toggled 'Sync Metadata' under the Metadata tab in Lightroom.  Voila, the GPS data appeared in the original metadata.  When this is done for all of my images, I will delete the second copies in my files.  Once I am satisfied that everything is okay, and my images are backed up satisfactorily, and only then, will I reformat my memory cards.
This whole experience has surfaced an interesting quirk in Lightroom, or in my Lightroom settings that I don't understand.  It may be something that Adobe might want to look into further, if others are finding a similar problem.

  • Moving from Bridge to Lightroom, when adding existing files on hard drive, will metadata transfer? Should I choose embed sidecar in file handling or will it automatically happen if I choose standard?

Moving from Bridge to Lightroom. Will metadata in existing files be recognized by Lightroom, and should I select embed+sidecar when adding files to library for the first time.

    Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.
CHRIS - you are exactly right about my FUTURE workflow. What I'm trying to figure out now is how to best handle images already processed. My import should be OK based on the way I have duplicates in separate directories, BUT I'm wondering how to avoid seeing all of these duplicates in LR when I search by keyword, etc.? I guess I can somehow flag the RAW files and only get them in my results.
One question though - Stacks, etc. sounds great for the LR processed images. But what about variations based on processing in Photoshop after the LR Develop stage? I guess in this case I will just have to keep duplicate images if I have multiple versions from my PS work?
ISAAC - Thanks for clarifying that LR will recognize my XMP files from Bridge. What about the opposite direction . . . if I edit something in LR and capture this via XMP, it won't prohibit Bridge from recognizing XMP info if I access a file via Bridge, will it?
ALSO - Do you know where I can find info about tracking via XMP vs. the central database? You mentioned a couple of valid points, but I'm not sure I have a full handle on the pros/cons of these options.
    Thanks!
    Mark

  • Transfer from Lightroom to Photoshop for executing a picture does not work

Execute a picture from Lightroom to Photoshop das not work. Picture is not opened in Photoshop. What could be the reason?

First: Go to <Edit >Preferences >General tab / Prompts and click on <Reset all Warning Dialogs>.
Then do Edit in Photoshop again. Do you get a dialog box? What does it say?
And which version of Photoshop is this?
If it is not CS6 but a prior version, you have to select <Render using Lightroom>; <Open anyway> doesn't work with CS5 or earlier CS.
The reason is that CS5 has not the latest ACR, but Lr 4.3 has. That means that CS5 cannot open a Raw image sent from Lr 4.3.
The solution is to let Lr 4.3 create the PSD (or TIFF) and send it to CS5. This is done by selecting <Render using Lightroom>.

  • Will the Keywords transfer from Lightroom to Bridge?

Will the Keywords transfer from Lightroom to Bridge

In LR once you add a keyword, have that thunbnail highlighted and (if on a Mac) hit the Command Key + the S key and it will send the info so it will be readable in Bridge. Or go to Metadata and click to send metadata to file. (I don't know the shortcut for a PC)  I haven't done it with PSCC yet, but in CS6 I quite often had to close out Bridge and re-start it and the keywords showed up.

  • How to move images from Picasa to Lightroom 5 on a mac?

How to import images from Picasa to Lightroom 5 on a mac?

    Hi, lnmyers,
I have thousands of pictures stored in Picasa, all of which are stored in my Picasa Web Albums. They are no longer in a directory on my hard-drive, that particular hard-drive having died ages ago. Thank goodness I uploaded them to Picasa's cloud before the hard-drive died. Should that ever darken, I am in trouble. I digress. I downloaded the pictures I wanted from Picasa Web Albums to my new external hard-drive that I set up and attached to my mac. For example:  I had a an album called "California 2013" stored in the Picasa cloud. I downloaded the entire album to a folder on my Seagate external drive that I call Lightroom within which I have a folder called California 2013. It took about twenty minutes to get them all (300+ photos). Then, I pointed LR to the California 2013 folder on the Seagate external drive when I wanted to catalogue the pictures into LR. I did not worry about metadata; I took whatever came with the pictures and didn't worry about it. I added copyright, keywords, and ownership info with LR.
    I hope that helps.

  • Images imported from Aperture showing up 'washed out' in Lightroom.

I am aware that Lightroom uses ProPhoto RBG. When i export images from Aperture to a folder then import into Lightroom the images appear very different. Is there a setting i am missing as the images seem 'washed' out in Lightroom. When i export to the desktop and open in Photoshop they look the same as in Aperture. After i import to Lightroom and open in Photoshop they still look washed out.
New to Lightroom and trying to find the right alternative to Aperture.
    Many Thanks in advance.

You are probably right, it is an issue with color profiles and gamut.  Aperture does use a different raw converter, which will create some variance.  In fact, many like the look of straight Aperture raw conversions over straight ACR conversions.  But if the washed out look is dramatic, and Photoshop opens your raw files okay, then it must be a profile issue.
It may help to explain how you are exporting from Aperture.  Are your source files raw files, PSDs, TIFFs, or JPEGs?   Are you exporting masters, or are you exporting versions?  If you're exporting versions, take a look at your "source preset" when exporting.  What color profile are you embedding?
Although if you are embedding any color profile, Photoshop and Lightroom should pick it up.
All I've read is that Lightroom manages profiles more transparently than Photoshop, but perhaps someone could jump in here and say how it is managed.
Finally, what purpose are you exporting and importing into Lightroom?  If you're migrating your library to a Lightroom catalog, you may be best served by using the Aperture migration plug-in.
    Aperture import plugin now available
The plug-in still has issues with foreign characters, importing all previews, and face keywording and keywording previews.  You'll be better off waiting until these issues are fixed.  Even if you can't, the plug-in would still be a better option than a manual attempt, unless you're doing something other than migrating your Aperture library.

  • How do I import images from Aperture into Lightroom 5?
