Imagent is eating up all my ram within a minute

This morning on both my air and imac running 10.7.3 imagent process is devouring my ram within a minute briniging bioth computers to a crawl and then message out of applicaiotn memory. Force quitting the imagent process restarts ichat and the memory hog cuycle all over again...help.

The same happened (for the first time) to me today - my solution was simply to uninstall iMessage beta and reinstall iChat again. This issue is being reported in many different threads, so it must be something that needs to be resolved by Apple before launching Mountain Lion.

  • Please help, my Mini is eating up all my Ram & suffers from annoying bugs!

    Hello
This is my first official post with a few problems as I just got my Mini and as I hear around the boards, there are a number of things wrong with the mini...
Here is my first problem :
My Mini seems to eat up a lot of ram and for some reason, when I quit all of my apps and leave only one or two open it does not go up... Instead it just sits there and if I try to open more apps, it falls dangerously low and I feel the computer is kind of suffering...
On restart it is doing just fine again.
Here are some examples (please click on links to see Activity Monitor images):
The case when it goes bad
    http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/1645/ramconsumption6ba.jpg
And this is after restart or startup
    http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/3280/ramconsumption25es.jpg
What is eating up all my ram? And why does it not bounce back to the free ram it should have? It is like the apps suddenly double in RAM consumption...
    Second problem :
When I start up my mini, each and every time I have to remind the mini to connect to my Airport Express, I have to go to the menu and pull down the menu bar and that is all. I don't even have to select it, cause it does it by its self, but not until I remind it. This is a rather annoying part, I cannot make it understand that it should JUST connect to my Airport setting...
Are there any solutions for this?
    Third Problem :
When I startup the mini, the sound is always set to default, meaning it comes through the speakers at half volume. I always set it to full, so that I can control my speakers instead of going both to the mac and my speakers to control my sound setting.
Does anyone have this problem? And how can I fix it?
Also,I can only hear the startup chime via the mini and not via my speakers. Is this a universal problem with the minis? If so I can live with it, though it is pretty annoying.
    Fourth Problem :
As I am writing this topic in this forum, my keyboard is kind of slow, it is not reacting as fast as it should. It is set to fast in the preference pane and even the controls of going up and down on a page via the arrow keys don't seem to keep its beat. It does it once and I have to press it how ever many lines I want to go up, unlike before on my G5 I just press and hold the button and it will go as far as I let it before I let it go.
    What is that all about?
    Fifth Problem :
Though this is a small problem, I don't know if this could be major later. I tend to get digital distortion during my usage of Safari. Certain places, I visit I can see digital distortion. Like when I scroll on CNN.COM. It makes some strange lines and I cannot figure out what is wrong with it...
Now, the mini was once considered to be a cheap investment, but as I found out, I had to go a long way and very close to the price of an iMac to get my Mini to work. See I have an Apple Studio Displace 17 inch ADC. Now, to my surprise, as I was about to hook up my mini to my nice Apple screen (Only a generation old), I was in for a big shock... It was simply not compatible... Not one bit... Leaving me with the bitter taste of having to pay an additional $130 for an DVI to ADC converter. And that really made me angry.
But aside from that, I have to say, I am not certain that I want to keep this mini... I have 10 days, to decide if I want to keep it or not... I can get a full refund if I don't like it... And so far, I am not sure I like it as much as I thought I would...
Rosetta aside, I think it is pretty fast, in all the native Intel apps. So, we'll see if I can eliminate some of these problems and if I can, I will keep it, but I am not sure how many of these problems I am going to need fixed before I seriously want to keep it...
I am going from one problematic G5 Dual 1.8 Powermac to another problematic Apple computer... It can get a little too overwhelming...
So any help anyone can give me at this point, would be very much appreciated...
Dual : G5 1.8 Ghz, MacMini Core Duo, iPod, iPod Shuffle & mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Was the mini the correct decision?

    Hi PPC7410!!!
Wow, thank you so much for your post, I really appreciate you taking the time to set a few things straight for me...
And yes, you are right, the Apple Studio Display was bought with my G5 Dual 1.8. So I kind of didn't want to buy a new monitor.
The main reason why I bought the mini now was because I am saving up for a MacBook Pro. I am going mobile soon and need a good computer. But, I want to wait till Apple fixes all the small problems with the MacBook Pros and I hope to get one early next year. And that is where the mini comes into the picture. I need a computer I can have while I save up for the laptop. And while I can still get some decent money for the G5, I am going to sell it and use the money on the laptop. Once I get that, I will give the mini to my father who can use it to keep in touch with me and start his digital life...
    But...
A little about why I went with the min in the first place...
I bought a Dual 1.8 G5 PowerMac not long ago, well when it came out. Since day one I had serious problems with it. It was so bad that Apple even sent me a replacement, but that only came back with other problems. The first one had a logic board defect, it just panicked almost all the time... (On each startup there was a good chance my monitor went blue and a lot of cryptic codes were written all over the screen. Even when I tried the hardware test DVD, it couldn't complete it because it went into panic mode and I had to pull the plug cause nothing responded on the G5.)
Ok, so I waited almost 3 weeks for the new one, while I was in the middle of a project (which died because of this), and I was really pulling hairs by this time. So the new Powermac arrived, and I had to return my faulty G5 to where I got it. I live on the 4th floor and no elevators. 2 weeks before I got my G5 my back went out, so I don't have to tell anyone who owns a G5 Powermac just how heavy it is. Perhaps out of the box it wouldn't be so back but the box was big enough to house a small family. The new ones are smaller I see.
Ok, the new one arrived, and it didn't panic or do the things that the other machine did. However it was birthed with entire new set of problems which started to show up a little bit at a time. These problems presented them selves in strange bottleneck results. Applications such as iTunes would suffer with a G5 Dual 1.8 powermac and 1GB of Ram. The specs were directly from Apple. I didn't add anything to it.
A friend of mine has a G4 400mhz and I am telling you, that sometimes, that machines does things FASTER than my G5 Dual 1.8Ghz. That blew my mind...
I have to be honest, the hammer fell hardest when I pre-ordered Apple's Aperture in hopes of really getting some kind of real harmony between my Mac and my Nikon D50. But alas, when I got it, tried to install it, it said it could NOT be installed on my machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet the Apple seller, on the phone said, SUUUURREE it can, why couldn't it... I thought ; well yeah it is suppose to be the best and fastest mac out there, why would it have a problem with it? But I was wrong... and when I called them telling them that I couldn't install the app, they didn't want to cut me some slack. So I was stuck with Aperture 1.0... It looked good on the shelf, but that is all... It was a waste of money....
To be honest, I simply gave up at that time... I have just had so many problems with the G5 I have, that I wanted to downgrade to something that just did, the normal jobs of everyday work, such as surfing the web, emailing, occasional Photoshopping( With Adobe's press note telling us not to hold our breaths for any Uni-Photoshop this year, kind of feels like a kick in the teeth).
So, I didn't expect much from the mini. I know I couldn't do heavy work on it but all in all, speed wise, it is as fast as my G5 on a good day.
So aside from Rosetta, which is a real drag when you use it, it is a pretty good little machine... Just hope they will sort out these problems sooner than they did with so many other macs with ticks and bugs.
Again, thank you for answering my questions... I didn't quite understand the RAM thing, but you might be right, I just didn't encounter that on my G5...
Take care and have a great day!

this is what i have done to my computer recently:
    today i added 2 512MB of PC-100 RAM
2 weeks ago i installed a new video card ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and added usb 2.0 ports.
power mac g4 duel, gigabite ethernet edition   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi
two commom things which can cause crashes are bad or out of spec RAM and excessive heat generated by powerful graphics cards such as the Radeon 9800. If it's just started happening since you added the RAM, that seems the most likely culprit. Have you tried removing the DIMMs to see whether the problem goes away? You could try each of the two individually to see whether it's just a bad DIMM or a more general problem with that particular RAM.

  • Final cut pro x with kernel task is eating up all my ram

hi, i have this new iMac i7 with 16 giga ram
when i open fcpx it slows down all my computer
and kernel task goes up till 5 giga
and fcp is using 9 giga
what can i do to make it work like it should ?

Yosemite handles Ram differently from previous versions. Do not think about the RAM, if FCPX is working fine, then everything is OK. If the RAM is the main issue you should ask this question on Yosemite forum for more detailed answer.

  • ITunes eats all my RAM then crashes!

I don't know if it's a recent update or something, but recently iTunes, if left running unattended for a few hours, will eat up all my RAM (I have 12GB), causing over 11 million pageouts before becoming unresponsive. As soon as I force quit my memory is released, but I keep coming back to my Mac and finding that this has happened!
I've got lots of RAM and HD space free so I know it's not that - any ideas what I can do?

I noticed that when working on a project the slide preview
would stop working after a few minutes. When I investigated this
further I found out that captivate uses around 5 to 12 MB of
additional RAM per second playtime of the preview. When captivate
uses around 1.7GB of RAM the preview stops working (preview area
goes blank) the sound continues however. After some more testing I
found out that this is only the case when there are animations
present in the current slide. Without animations it also allocates
additional memory, however by far not as much as with animations. I
also had this problem with Cp 3 and the main reason to try out Cp 4
was that I hoped this and other bugs would be gone :(
You can download a .cp here for which the error occurs to me:
    http://quibits.com/cp_eats_ram.cp
A short video of the bug can be found here:
    http://quibits.com/cp_eating_my_ram/
Does anyone have the same problems, or know a solution?
    Joachim
I had the same problem with CP3. I thought that was fixed in
    CP4

  • Is there a solution yet for FCPX eating all the RAM?

FCPX is eating all my RAM and 'Memory Clean' keeps having to kick in so that the system doesnt stop completely. I have searched various forums and sites for an answer but noone seems to have a solution yet.
My events and projects are all on external (7200rpm) drives, I use Event Manager X to only open what I need per project, and background processing is off, but the RAM just keeps diving down until the system almost freezes. Very frustrating, especially if a client is present.
    Yes, I've trashed the preferences.
    umm...help?

I do not believe that MC is capable of purging Video RAM thus the memory on your graphic card.
There are two RAM problems with FCPx or should I say OS X 10.6 & 10.7
10.6 & 10.7 does a bad job (10.6 worse than 10.7) @ setting RAM Free. This problem shows itself when overall system performance (I.e. opening a WIndow in the Finder) becomes a matter of 10 seconds etc...
There there is the Video RAM problem which is pertaining to FPCx and all versions of OS X. This problems shows itself after working intensively in FPCx... All one needs to do is to do LOTS of editing in the Timeline... On my setup with 1GB of Video RAM it will take approx. (depending on how many tasks (Edits) I am completing) 20 minutes to reveal itself. To begin with (after opening FCPX) it simply flies. No matter what I do, there is no lag just a VERY responsive app... Then after those 20 min. the CTI (Playhead) starts lagging and jumping in play. The skimmer starts choking, menus (Inspector etc) are opening at turtle-tempo...  However, my Free System RAM is still @ about 10 GB.... so lots and lots of RAM... The video RAM is what is being used and NOT SET FREE.
Rebooting the Mac at this point is the only remedy. Which is OK... My rMBP boots in 7 seconds. So I am rebooting approx. every 30 minutes in a big session.
Whenever you guys experience these problems, try to take 5 minutes to recap and write to the Feedback. The more scenarios we can provide them with the better their chances of finding the culprit.
I personally find the FCPx crew to be HIGHLY responsive to feedback. THEY def. care

  • LR 3.3RC still eats all available ram and swaps during preview

I didn't see anything about ram issues being fixed in 3.3rc1...  and can confirm I'm still seeing problems.
If I preview and rate 500 images LR starts swapping, as it ate 16gig of ram.  After that, everytime you preview a couple of more images, it swaps another chunk of ram to disk and allocates more.
Personally, I think this is a bit excessive...
Any word on when this will be fixed?
    Cheers!
Mac, 64bit, 16gig ram, dual quad core processors

It is a known and unfortunate limitation of how our current lens profile installation/uninstallation works. The workaround is to reinstall LR 3.2.

  • How do I delete images in Finder's "all my Files" when I have the same pictures in a file in Documents? It seems like a lot of duplication. If I delete the individual image it disappears in the folder. Thank You.

How do I delete images in Finder's "all my files" without deleting the images in a separate folder I have in Documents? It seems to be so much duplication. Just set up our new Mac and am not understanding how the files work. Thank you.

All My files is a "search folder"
it isn't real storage location. All files within your home folder are found by the criteria set for the search folder and displayed to you In one place.
If the folder doesn't meet your needs, remove it from the sidebar.

  • Non interactive zlogin eats up all CPU on Solaris 10 u4

    Hi,
We are having trouble with a zlogin command that is started via a script from inittab on a Solaris 10 u4 system.
When a zlogin command is started from the script this zlogin will within 10-15 seconds start spinning and consume 97-98% of the CPU. The zlogin command never ends, and the startup is stuck there.
Running a pstat during the zlogin shows the following picture:

Found the reason. The default scheduling class was set to RT. Probably explained why zlogin was allowed to eat up all CPU resources

  • Does a linked image get modified at all when constantly resized?

or does it always refer back to the original image?

No you don't need to relink the image after a bunch of resizing within InDesign.
The image data has two references to PPI withini InDesign and you can view this in the Window>Links
The Image will have two readings:
    Actual PPI and Effective PPI
Actual is a reference to the PPI of the image in it's 100% placed state.
Effective PPI shows what PPI the image is after resizing the image.
So if you were to insert a 72 ppi image, and then reduced the image to 24%
    That would mean that
    Actuall PPI = 72 ppi
    Effective PPI = 300 ppi
Because 72 ppi is the image resolution
And reducing it to 24% means it's effectively 300 ppi
    72/(24 percent) = 300
    That's the only thing.
    So if your image is
    Actual 300 PPI
and you've increased the size of the image to 150%
That means Effective PPI of your image will be 200 PPI
But all this is done within InDesign and doesn't require you to relink the image.

  • "image capture extension" consuming all resources

Image Capture Extension is hogging all my ram... What is going on with that thing? I wiped and restored system last week, I have 16 gig ram and a 1 TB disk. I should have more then enough of everything. I noticed that for the last couple of days Image Capture seems to slow down my computer to a spinning beach ball every five seconds, which makes it almost impossible to work or/and type...
What does that extension do? Do I really need Image Capture as I have lightroom and photoshop... My computer has 200 gig stuff on it, and 700 gig and a bit free. I should not experience that spinning beach ball...
I wonder if this has to do with Yosemite... I installed that one last week after reformatting my whole computer...
Any insights? Are other people experiencing this problem??????
I first thought it had to do with Time machine but swapped that one off and I still have the spinning beach ball...
At this point in time Image Capture is not open and it still hogs 4.1 GB of my resources..., I checked in the memory pane of Activity monitor... Lightroom is a good second with 1.02 GB...

More info. The problem seems to be limited to one of the user accounts (mine). Launching iphoto from one of the other user accounts seems to work OK.
    So I:
    1) Gave one of the other accounts admin rights
    2) Logged out, and logged back into the new admin account
    3) Deleted my account- telling the OS to delete the directory
    4) Re-created my account from scratch.
    5) Logged out, and then logged back into my "new" account
(all my old settings, background, etc. were indeed gone)
    6) Checked iphoto... it causes a runaway "image capture extension" again ?!?!

  • Export out of Motion uses all my Ram?

Why when I export out of Motion it uses all my Ram? Whether I have 6GB or 10GB of Ram it uses it all.
Then it starts all the page outs. Right now I am at 12GB of page outs.
From what I understood you should not have a lot of page outs thats why I purchased more Ram.

Well, as a bit rate, HDV has the same throughput as regular DV. The throughput for ProRes is higher so if you have a lot of multiclip angles, you'll need RAID speeds to run it.
However, HDV is a Long GOP format and as such is not really meant for editing, it's designed for file compression. Pro-Res is an intraframe codec. You can wiki the difference if you want to get into specifics, but the gist of it is that HDV requires a lot of processor power to uncompress the GOP structure, allow for editing and then rebuild the GOP structure on export. This is what makes HDV undesirable for editing. It also eats up a lot of what Motion uses to perform math for motion gfx.
If you're working with multiclips, and you have FCS 3, then you have access to the ProRes LT and Proxy codecs, both of which are high-quality/low bitrate codecs. I would convert the HDV to proxy or LT (whichever your system can handle), edit, and then batch re-digitize to the source tapes. However, I would want the high-rez source to be ProRes regular, not HDV.

  • How Can I change all User Passwords Within a Directory Instance

    Hi Experts,
I've been asked to refresh an old directory instance with some production data.  Easy enough I thought, however, the user has requested that all user passwords within the old directory instance are preserved.  Is that at all possible?  My chain of thought was that I can extract user passwords from the old instance into a file: -
    # ldapsearch -D cn="Directory Manager" -w xxxxxxxx -b o=xxxxxxx objectclass=* userpassword > <name of file>
And then then use ldapmodify (or alike) to re-import the user passwords once I've refresh the old instance with the production data.  However, to my knowledge, in order to modify a particular entry via a file, i'd need the following format: -
    dn: gci=-1,ou=people,o=xxxxxxxx
    changetype: modify
    replace: userpassword
    userpassword: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The only information I have in the file I created using the ldapsearch command above is as follows: -
    dn: gci=-1,ou=people,o=xxxxxxxx
    userpassword: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I don't want to have to edit the file and add the relevant missing entries accordingly as the generated file has somewhere in the region of 150 thousand entries.
Am I approaching this the correct way?  Is there any other mean of achieving my requirement.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi,
It does not seem a big deal to add the missing lines to your output file.
For instance, the following awk command should do the trick
    cat search.out
    dn: gci=-1,ou=people,o=xxxxxxxx
    userpassword: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    cat search.out | awk '/userpassword/ {print "changetype: modify} ; print "replace: userpassword"; }  {print $0}
    dn: gci=-1,ou=people,o=xxxxxxxx
    changetype: modify
    replace: userpassword
    userpassword: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Then you can use ldapmodify to apply your changes
