Images Bigger on External Drive?

This isn't really a problem; just a question. I copied some huge files from my external hard drive to the folder Documents on my MacBook Pro. Then I compared both collection of files, the original and the new copy. Both have the same number of files - 197,701. However, the original copy (on my external hard drive) takes up something like 7GB or 8GB, while the original copy takes up about half as much space.
Why is that?
Thanks.

If you "get info" on one of the files, does it have the same number of bytes on each hard drive? (The "Size" in the Get Info windows should say something like "2.19 MB (22,998,160 bytes)".) It's possible that the block sizes of the hard drives are different. This will make the minimum amount of hard drive space a file can take up different.

  • Unable to see .zmg image on USB external drive

While attempting to image a Tecra S2, I used a bootdisk to image the laptop via the USB external hard drive. The image file was not viewable but all other images on the external drive were. Tried renaming, relocating image, recopying the file to the drive but same in all instances. The file could not be seen from Linux. The image size is 3.2 GB and the likely original source of the image to the server was from a burned CD. Any thoughts on why this file was not viewable but all others were.

  • Recovery Software for Disk Image Backup on External Drive

Hello. I am currently running OSX Yosemite on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. However, before I upgraded from OSX Maverick I installed a SSD as a boot drive and moved my original Toshiba HDD to the optical bay for media storage. Before the installation, I purchased a LaCie 1TB external hard drive, formatted it, then dragged the entire Toshiba HDD image from the desktop to the external HD. That image is visible on the external HD but is inaccessible by Disk Utility, whether I use it from the HD, the SSD, or the Installation DVD. All scans and attempts to mount and open the image fail. I realize now I made a mistake by not cloning the Toshiba HDD onto the external HD before starting but the image size (on the external HD) is 187GB, which corresponds with a somewhat compressed ~220GB (the original size of the Toshiba HDD). Therefore, it seems as though the files are present and intact, albeit currently inaccessible.
Is there any way to recover the files from the disk image, i.e. via Data Recovery Software such as Data Rescue 4, Stellar Phoenix or R-Studio? Alternately, could I use the same software to recover the now deleted files from the wiped and reformatted Toshiba HDD? I'm having trouble accepting that the 187GB of data on the external drive are really gone, as it represents over a decade of media collection and contains many irreplaceable files. I'm hoping there is something that can be done before spending a lot of money on clean room data recovery services. Please help!!!
Thank you in advance as any and all advice is very much appreciated.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Creating a restore image on an external drive with package install options

    Hi,
I'm looking to use a combination of tools maybe Deploy Studio, System Image Utility etc to create an image that isn't Netbooted but rather on an external drive (a fast Thunderbolt raid enclosure) - a restorable image which will contain OSX setup with all the essential applications my users require.
That bit is fairly easy using some clone software but I want to do a couple more things. I need to create a Bootcamp partition on the computer and I want this all to be as hands off as possible. I've looked at Winclone in which I can create a Bootcamp clone and even put it in a deployable package file which in theory will create the partition and restore the clone when run.
Ideally id be able to make a restore image that boots, restores and also gives me package options, allowing me to chose the Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 package file in the image to deploy and also whether to deploy another package file which will include 3 optional applications for the user depending on their choice. If I was allowed at restore to decide which packages if any should be run id be able to create one single restore image.
Does anyone know if this possible?

Found the answer. It was formatted for Windows.

  • My hard drive is full. How do I move my images to an external drive without 'losing' them in Lightroom?

I am a recent convert to Lightroom 5. I currently have a single catalog stored on my hard drive. All the images in the catalog (about 20,000) are stored on the same hard drive. This hard drive is now full. I need to move the images to an 2tb external drive but don't want to lose them in Lightroom. (I am keen to keep the catalog on the existing hard drive and back it up to the external hard drive). I have tried to work this out for myself in Adobe help etc but I am uncertain and mildly worried at the prospect of messing this up. Can anyone help?

  • Issue with size of disk image on an external drive

I am trying to make a 900GB encrypted disk image on a new (blank) Lacie 1TB external drive. When I try and do so, I am told that there is only space for a 500GB image. When I tried to do the same thing on a Seagate 1TB external drive, I had no problem in doing so. Lacie tells me that it's an OS issue and not a disk issue. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

I had already contacted LaCie; they weren't too interested and told me to contact Apple. I contacted Apple and the tech guy said that in order to create a diskimage of xGB, one needs 2xGB space on that drive. I don't know why that is and I didn't ask and nor did I have the energy to ask why it then worked on the Seagate drive. He said I can use FileVault 2 to secure the external drive...

  • Checking to see if iPhoto images transferred to external drive worked

I have decided to copy photos from my iPhoto '09 Library to an external Seagate harddrive. I want to still keep the originals on my MacBook Pro, but I am looking at downloading Lightroom 5 and starting to use it from 2014 going forward, instead of using iPhoto. Before I start working in a new program, I want to be sure all my images are backed up using a program I can operate.  I double-clicked on my home folder and then the Pictures folder to open the iPhoto library.  I right clicked on the file iPhoto Library, hit copy and then opened my Seagate external drive and hit paste. It took about 3 hours to copy and when I hit "get info" on the folder within the Seagate external drive, I see the same number of GBs of information as is in my iPhoto Library on my harddrive.
Here is the question: I want to be sure that,in fact, all my photos have been successfully copied onto my harddrive. When I double click on the folder in the harddrive which is titled, iPhoto Library, I see my iPhoto icon launch from my dock at the bottom of my MacBook, and across the top I see that iPhoto is the open program. Of course, all my events are where they always were, but I'm not sure I am looking at the events in the iPhoto on my harddrive or on my Seagate external drive.
    Did I do something wrong?

I only want to use this external drive as a back up, not to be a default library. I still want to keep the default on my MacBook Pro. I only want to open the external drive to make sure that my photos have all been copied and are being stored there.
Then option launch again to change the default back to the internal drive
A second question I have, is when I download more photos into the iPhoto library on my laptop, or into what I hope to be a Lightroom Library, starting 2014, then when I hook up the Seagate External Hard Drive to back up next time, will it re-write all the previous photos which have currently been backed up prior to 2014, or will it just start with whatever photos (or new Lightroom Library) it does not recognize?
No idea - nothing in the standard Mac software will "re-write" anything - if you have backup software of some sort running then it will do what ever it does - unless you have something special set up nothing will change in the copy on the external drive until you specifically do something to change it
And note that LR and iPhoto can not share a library of the same photos - to use your photos with LR you must export the originals (or current depending on what you want) from iPhoto and then import those into LR

  • Lightroom 3 not finding my images on new External Drive I copied them in the MAC finder..bad I know

I recently bought a larger external drive and did a copy of all my files, including my catalog, via my MAc finder..I know now this was a clumsy way to do things.
I don't want to go through another copy session within LR.lotsa files.
I've done "find missing photos" but now I don't have a clue as to what to do.
Right clicking doesn't show anything relevant.
    Sort of stuck..help?
    Thanks,
    Pete

None of that right clicking was working...except for "find missing images"//which it did..but then I had a collection of "missing images" and had no clue what to do with them
Last night before I went to bed I decided to change the name of my new external drive to the exact same name as the drive I copied the images from....and it worked perfectly. Lightroom grabbed everything and I was running again.
Im a bit uneasy about that solution tho..

  • Sparse Bundle Image Unmounts from External Drive (NTFS)

This is a duplicate of https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2135602?start=0&tstart=0 but the problem still exists in Mountain Lion. I have NTFS-3G ans FUSE for OSX installed to mount my external drive. I copied a sparse bundle image over to the drive. Now when I try to mount the drive it instantly unmounts. Disk Utility says it mounts Successfully, even though it unmounts. Can anyone help me figure out how I can mount the sparse bundle image while it lives on my external NTFS drive?

    madhusudhan wrote:

Not sure what you mean what sparsebundle?
I want to know what sparse bundle you are talking about.
the sparse bundle with your filevaulted home directory which was originally located in /users/yourusername? or some other sparse bundle?
I was using FileVault. Probably I may have put the trailing slash (can't remember as it was almost two weeks back).
The External HDD is FAT formatted drive. I haven't done any changes to permissions.
you should not be using a FAT drive for this. move everything over to an HFS+ formatted drive. and don't use a FAT drive for backing up OS X. FAT is an old file system which does not support many features needed by OS X.
so what you need to do is put all the stuff you listed (token, Info.plist, Info.bckup and the bands folder) into a folder and give that folder the name username.sparsebundle where username is your old username. then you need to add a bundle flag to that folder. you need setFile command for that. it's not a part of the basix OS X install. you can install XCode (it's on the SL install DVD) or use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ to install just the setFile command. then run the command
    setFile -a -B /path/to/unsername.sparsebundle
This will restore the bundle bit to it and it will look like an actual sparse bundle. you can then try mounting it by double-clicking it. you'll have to enter your old user password. if it works you are in luck and can reuse it. if it doesn't work it's most likely corrupt beyond repair and you should trash it. you can try fixing it first but it's almost never possible with corrupt encrypted sparse bundles. but try mounting it first and see if it simply mounts. post back with the results.
    Advance thanks for assistance.

  • Relocating Image Folders to External Drive where LR library resides...

I have 12,500 images on my main drive in my Pictures Folder (MAC), and the LR library/catalog file (also on my main drive) automatically looks to that folder when I open LR. But I just moved my LR Folder (library, etc.) from my main drive to an external drive. When I opened LR again and chose the library on the external drive, what shows up in FOLDERS down the left side is my PICTURES folder and all my RAW file folders from my main drive. I've already made a physical copy (by drag/drop) of each of those RAW folders onto the external drive, but how to I get LR to recognize/access those, and not the PICTURES folder on the main drive?
    Thanks for your help,
    Brenda

The easiest way is to "loose" the images and then "find" them again. You could remove the images from the drive so LR fails to locate the images, but it's easier just to rename to folder on the main drive that contains all your images.
Then start Lightroom. All your folders will be in red. Right click on the main folder and click "locate missing files" then point to the new location.

I am trying to set up an sparse disk image on an external drive and I am not getting the standard screen that I have seen referenced. My only options to select are image format and encryption, not image size, etc. I have the external drive formatted as Mas OS extended. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Images on External Drive

    Hello there.
My photos are in a external drive and when I add them to my library, iPhoto gathers all the images from the external drive and puts them on the hard drive. It takes too much room.
Is it possible to have the iPhoto library link to a photo file folder on a external drive?
    Thank you so much

    wellsamwell:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There are two way you can do that.
1 - move the iPhoto Library folder to the external drive and run it from there. Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, navigate to the external HD and select the library folder there.
2 - convert your library to an alias based one that uses alias files pointing to the real (source) files that you keep on the external HD. Tutorial #2 describes how to convert your library to an alias based one.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • How do I merge external drive images to desk top drive within the same master catalog?

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited  images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.
    I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.
Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated as I've spent hours trying to resolve this problem.

Okay, so I would copy (not move) the folders/photos to the internal HD, keeping them in the same folder hierarchy as they are in now on the external HD. Yes, of course the drive name will be different, but other than that the folder path and file name should be the same.
Then, open the LR catalog that indexes the files and Update Folder Location (details are here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm, scroll down to the "Update Folder Location" section)
Then, once that is complete and everything is working in your LR catalog, with no question marks on the photos or folders, optionally delete the photos on the external HD.

  • Transfer image files from Mac to external drive?

Can someone please help.? I'm a newbie and want to transfer image frile to an external drive...

Well, if you are not doing a complete back up of your system, you can simply drag images to an external drive - that will create a copy there and leave the original in place.

  • Using smart previews on iMac to control two sets of identical original files on two external drives --- render previews setting when using smart previews

I’m just getting started with Lightroom and if someone can help me I’ll be very appreciative.
I’m using an iMac with a 1TB drive and two external 2.5 TB drives for backup.  My active files are on all three drives and I’m running out of room on the iMac drive.
With the smart previews capability of Lightroom 5, I’m hoping to remove all the active files from the iMac drive.  I hope to import existing images into the LR catalog from two identical drives with identical folders and have both sets of images reflect the changes I make using smart previews on my iMac.
I just created two identical test folders of junk images on the external drives and was following a beginners tutorial on importing. However, I see nothing about using smart previews on my iMac that, when connected, will update more than one external drive at the same time.
I’m also wondering if, when using smart previews, it matters how I set the render previews during the import process.
    Many thanks for any help,
    Karl Hentz

I don't see any way to use smart previews to update both external drives at the same time. The smart previews are linked to a specific set of images. But it seems to me that if both drives are in fact identical, once the catalog is updated when one of those drives is connected those changes should also apply to the files on the other drive. It's actually the catalog that gets updated, not the images.  Smart previews and regular import previews are completely unrelated. How you have your import previews configured will have no effect on your smart previews.
Incidentally, in order for my suggestion to work it would be necessary to only have one of those external drives connected. And when the other EHD is connected it would have to have the same drive letter or name. In other words it would have to appear to the iMac that it is precisely the same drive.
