Images: CMYK to RGB in photoshop or just export PDF in Indesign as CMYK?

Hello again,
This community has been of great help no end thus far.
For my booklet, i would say 90% of the layout is images created in Illustrator. What is best practice here for scans or images which have been screen printed or ar basically RGB?
I am unsure whether it is worthwhile converting images to CMYK in photsohop and then playing with them in Illustrator and then finally placing in Illustrator because of the following:
Why do this if on "export PDF"  i can use press settings. Would this not convert EVERYTHING in my Indesign booklet to CMYK ready material???
I'm unsure what to do?
Best Regards
Don

The only reason you might want to convert to CMYK before export is if, and this is the most important factor, you already know the correct output profile for the device on which this will be printed and you will NEVER want to repurpose the art for another device, and if you want to be able to tweak the image and sharpen after conversion.
If all you were going to do in Photoshop is convert to CMYK, and not do addtional edits after, there is no advantage, at all, to doing that over converting on export from ID.

  • To adjust before Photoshop or just export and then adjust. Pls Help.....

    Good evening.
Problem driving me a bit nutz.
I've been making my adjustments in Aperture such as Levels, Sat and Shadows etc., and then first, when I exported to PS the adjustments did not show, so I figure, rut ro, I have to export the "versions" of course. I did just that. But the Versions come in to PS as 72 dpi vs. the 300 dpi I have set in Aperture Prefs.
(The Masters come in with the expect 300 dpi)
Can I not export into PS a file, with my corrections as 300 dpi? If not then what? Make my adjustments in PS?
BTW, these are all Masters imported directly in Aperture not referenced.
    Thanks so much.
    Tom

Well steve, there in lies my problem I think.
I never saw the "Export Presets" When you were referring to this I was thinking "Prefs". When I pulled down the menu, I found it.
Truth be told, I don't want the files back into Aperture just yet.
In PS, I basically, Run a plug in named Primatte to pull out the green screen whereas I will then add to a digital backdrop file and save. Then I will import the finished product into Aperture giving me the ability to Disk save the orig masters on DVD and keep the finished product in Aperture only.
    Make sense.
I'm going to run this tonight. Thank you so much for your help. and I'm going to leave this open and respond back tomorrow.
Good night and again, Thank you.
    Tom

  • How do you turn off the recent files window (DC) that appears EVERY time after I close a PDF I just exported to from InDesign?

It's a real PITA to have to close that window every single time. Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.3 Acrobat DC

Someone else reported this sound last September, but there wasn't any resolution to that thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/938003 After upgrading to Snow Leopard on my Mac, Firefox makes typewriter or paper crinkling sounds when going to links and sites].
Does it seem to be at all related to whether pages use Flash? Just wondering whether it is some kind of notification sound related to Flash's capabilities of using the webcam and microphone.

  • Images look less saturated in Photoshop CC 2014

I import my RAW images into Lightroom 5 and make some basic adjustments.  Then I edit the image in Photoshop with the Lightroom adjustments.  I clean up the images and crop to the size I like and then I use the Perfect Effects 9 plugin to do some more edits.  I finish my edits in Perfect Effects 9 and save them which brings me back into Photoshop CC as a new layer.  In Photoshop the image looks less saturated than it did in Perfect Effects 9.  I then save the Photoshop file and exit.  When I look at the PSD file in Lightroom 5 browse window, it looks the same as it does in Perfect Effects 9.  Why does it look less saturated in Photoshop CC 2014?
    Here are my colour settings:
    Lightroom 5:
    External Editing:
Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014:
         File Format = TIFF
         Color Space = AdobeRGB(1998)
         Bit Depth = 16
         Resolution = 240
         Compression = zip
    Additional External Editor:
Preset = Perfect Effects 9 Suite
        File Format = PSD
        Color Space = AdobeRGB(1998)
        Bit Depth = 16
        Resolution = 300
    Perfect Effects 9:
    General:
Working Color Space = sRGB IEC61966-2.1
    Files:
         Copy Options:
         File Format = PSD
         Color Space = sRGB IEC61966-2.1
    Plug-ins:
         Lightroom:
         File Type = PSD
Color Space = Adobe RGB 1998
    Photoshop CC 2014:
        Color Settings:  Custom
        Working Spaces:
        RGB = sRGB IEC61966-2.1
        CMYK = U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
        Gray = Dot Gain 20%
        Spot = Dot Gain 20%
What color settings do I need to use so that the images have the same saturation look in all three programs? How do you know which image in which program is showing as the correct saturation?

No, just keep it at sRGB. As long as you have the "preserve" policy, the working space actually isn't all that important. The embedded document profile will always override it (as it should).
I had to read this a couple of times to follow the trail properly. Leaving Perfect Effects (which I don't know at all) out of it - does the very same file iteration, with the same edits, look different between Photoshop and Lightroom? Did I get that right?
In that case you have a bad monitor profile. This can sometimes throw off one application but not the other. Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator go into Windows color management and set sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as default display profile. When done relaunch all applications so that they can pick up the new profile at startup.

  • Save image as .jpg in the photoshop CC

I was using Photoshop CS6 so I instaled Photoshop CC. Now I need to  save my images as .jpg in the photoshop but I don't know how to do it. May someone  help  me, please?

It works the same as CS6. You can use save as or save for web. Just make sure your document mode is in RGB 8-bit. Otherwise you can not find jpg in the file types.
Actually, either CS6 or CC they updated the jpg option so that it would convert a 16-bit image to 8-bit for you. But for reference, the file format it self only supports RGB 8-bit.

  • I can't view multiple images in tabbed panels in photoshop CC (do not have this problem in PS5 or 6)

I can't set up multiple images in tabbed panels in photoshop CC (do not have this problem in PS5 or 6). Has anyone had this problem with CC and if so do they know the fix?

I just discovered something really weird.  If I open the images in
photoshop (and the tabs are not showing) and then open another window on
top of photoshop (for example word or safari) , then the images and tabs
show in the photoshop window.  But if I move Pshop to the front screen then
    the tabs disappear!

  • Opening RAW images from CANON D7 in photoshop? bridge?

    Hi everyone,
First of all, i have no idea were to post my question so im very sorry if its in the wrong place....
I have just bought a new camera which im very stoked with! A Canon D7. Guess if i was surprised when i couldn't open my raw images in photoshop! I work in CS3 and i really need to be able to open the images in Brigde and then Photoshop. And not having to open them in Canons software first.....
So, is this possible or has this expensive camera made me disappointed?
    Very grateful for answers,
    Cheers Anna

I have a 7D too. Here's the thing. The 7D has been supported for weeks now, unofficially, in the Camera Raw 5.5 release. It was unofficial because they hadn't finished profiling it yet. Adobe has released an update, Camera Raw 5.6 beta, that you can download. But since it's still in beta, it is not available from the normal public site. You have to get it from Adobe Labs, here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/CameraRaw5.6
Unfortunately, I see that you're talking about Photoshop CS3. Adobe only puts out Camera Raw updates for the current version, CS4, so you won't be able to use Camera Raw 5.6 in CS3. What you want to do is go to the same link and instead, download the DNG Converter. Once you run your 7D images through the DNG Converter, they will be in DNG raw format, which Photoshop CS3 can read, and so can Aperture and OS X.
At least Adobe is telling us where they are going and how ready they are and letting us download something that can read the 7D raw files. Apple has had no update available of any kind, and no advance word at all.
Since you asked where you should have posted, there are a number of Photoshop forums out there and the are all aware of the situation. For example you could go to Adobe's forums, or many photography-related forums like dpreview.com. These Apple forums are more likely to know about Aperture and iPhoto.

Why is it so difficult to convert a Raw image to a jpeg in Photoshop Elements ?! I have version 12. Once i realized to change the tick box in Camera Raw to 8 bit instead of 16 bit and Flatten image ( sometimes can flatten image if the flatten option isn't greyed out) hey presto i thought i was up and running. However after saving the photograph as a jpeg and renaming it e, after the word edit. I switched off/on my computer only for all the images i had spent time working on to have disappeared. Feeling very upset as there is no Technical Help to telephone at adobe and i don't know what to do.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Applying Images to 3D Objects in Photoshop?

    Hello,
I am currently working on an animation for school, and it requires some details. I have created a shape in Illustrator, which is a gradient rectangle. I took it to Photoshop, and did a 3D extrusion. I have that gradient texture on one side of the rectangle, but I don't know how to apply it to the other sides.
I just need to know how to put that texture on the other 5 sides.
    Thanks!
    Jack Reynolds

Why, of all the crackpot cock-a-mamie ideas I ever heard... it might just work . I feel I owe it to you to give it a go just to see...
Okay, so while I'm waiting for it to make the preview: one issue is that the scrollable content is, by definition, bigger than the page, so exporting a pdf only shows the visible portion. The way around that, of course, is to copy the grouped content to a really tall InDesign document and create a pdf of that. So far, so good. And I've dropped it in to the scrollable frame. On import I have selected 'Show Import Options' and have selected 'Transparent Background'.
Alas... it's the same as before. A PDF is certainly a neat way of storing the long group of images that need to go into the scrolling frame together. Disabling scrolling, as before, shows transparency. In the meantime, I'm exporting higher-res bitmap files from Sibelius and they are showing up properly. They'll probably be crisper, too. I had exported them originally for video and found that anti-aliasing gave a better result, so I suppose I didn't want to have to export all over again. But it's probably for the best.
I like the ingenuity of your suggestion, but even if it worked I'd worry that there were too many variables. Will alpha channels for transparency work with overlays?
    Thanks,
    David

Try this (but I’m not sure it will work):
Place the PDF in InDesign and be sure to show options. Select transparent background.
Put that into a scrollable frame.

  • Image with transparent background in Photoshop and InDesign exports strangely to PDF...

Hey, I really hope you can help!
Ok, I've made a catalogue in InDesign and there is say, an orange border. I've imported an image to layer over the orange border and it has a clear background. In photoshop it has no background and is simply the black outline. However, when i export the Indesign to pdf and print it out, the logo is there with its black part, but it is inside a non-outlined box and the background is sort of transparent, it displays orange, but displays a weird hue of orange, and it stands out... ive got it with a few other pictures, not sure what im doing wrong when i save the image either in photoshop or when exporting or what! I'm self taught, (with the help of this forum and youtube) so ill really appreciate any help. I could post an image but on screen it looks ok, its only seen when i print the catalogue, it's really strange!!! it's not just my printer either - thought of that - ive tried it on three at three different locations and with different pdf files to see if it was just one image. Sadly it's a good 220 on one 108-page document!!
If you wish to chat rather than post, you can skype me as charmywoo
im just grateful of any help!!
    Kind regards,
    Charmaine
Using: Indesign and photoshop 5.5 and operating on pc win 7 - i can also edit on a mac if necessary (if it resolves the issue)

Thanks loads Bob, just as you posted that, i found that link on another thread and came back to post it and you beat me to the punch! So thanks loads!
So if my printer is going to print this catalogue in litho print, rather than digital, do i still have to go back and flatten etc ?? I've separated the catalogue off to 108 individual pages with bleeds etc and it looks like I've got a fun friday night opening each one of them !!! rats!!
    thanks loads, kind regards,
    Charmaine

  • Canon EOS D60 CR2 raw images don't open in Photoshop.  Why?

I know this question has been asked many times but I couldn't find a thread with an answer.  I have just taken my first images with my Canon EOS D60 (upgraded from 1000D) and find that the CR2 raw images aren't recognised by Photoshop.  I remember I had this issue when I first had my 1000D but cannot remember what I did.  I have CS4 V11.0.2 and tried to update Camera Raw but it says no updates are available.  I have Lightroom 3 and that opens them ok but not Photoshop.  Sorry .... but can anyone tell me again what the problem is?  Thanks. :-(

You can get support for the latest cameras in CS2, CS3 and CS4 through our FREE DNG Converter:
    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4923
    Win: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4924
There are other benefits to using DNG besides backward compatibility if you haven’t explored those:
The metadata, keywords and RAW adjustments are stored in the file – along with a processed preview of the image. This makes the file portable and keeps your metadata safe and secure.
DNG files are smaller than the original RAW file which will save you disk space and time in the long run.
DNG is an openly specified file format which means the file format isn’t going away. So if you use another RAW processor that supports DNG, you don’t have to worry about compatibility or portability of your metadata.

  • How do I get a raw image from "My Pictures" into Photoshop?

How do I get a RAW image from "My Pictures" into Photoshop? When I send it to Photoshop , it shows up as a grey checkerboard. The title is on the top. Whe I try to send a picture from Camera Raw, it does the same thing.

Has it ever worked or is this just something that started happening recently?
Have you tried resetting the photoshop preferences file?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
Have you installed the latest updates for photoshop cs5?
In photoshop cs5 go to Help>Updates
To post the system info here on the forum it might depend on your browser, but using firefox as an example, you would open the system info in photoshop, press Copy then OK.
Here on the forum you would press the ctrl key and paste.

  • Image size from Illustrator to Photoshop

I'm new to Illustrator and may just be overlooking something here, but here's my the background and question:
I took a screen shot of an image and opened it in Photoshop CS3. I've cropped out a portion I want to use and save the file as a .eps file and open it with Illustrator. Within Illustrator, I recreate the image at the same size as the image I opened (I'm looking at both images at 100% view). I save my new image as a .eps file and then open it with Photoshop. For some reason, the image is about 50% bigger in Photoshop than it was in Illustrator. Any ideas? Is a 100% viewing percentage not really showing the correct size of the image? Or is does the issue lie with how Photoshop CS3 interprets a .eps file from Illustrator CS4?
Thanks in advance for any information/advice.

You have just discovered image resolution and its effect on the display of pixel based images.
In Illustrator there's no resolution. Objects have a defined size and Illy assumes a monitor resolution of 72 ppi as a basis for it's assumptions on the display of graphics and for it's calculations of this 100%.
When exporting into pixel based file formats you can choose the resolution.
In Photoshop the "100%" has no relation to the actual size of things (as defined in Illustrator) but means that one pixel of the image is one pixel of your monitor.
When you open an EPS you get a dialog box in which you specify the way photoshop has to calculate the pixels from the vector and the resolution you want. When you enter 72 ppi you should get the size you expected. But that won't be enough to print.
BTW: the workflow of making a screenshot and converting your image to and fro maybe harmful to printing results.

  • Clipboard images converting to RGB

When I "copy merged", create a new file and paste the contents into it, I see my new image is RGB instead of the Adobe RGB from the original image. I must have a preference setting wrong somewhere?
When I use the Duplicate command, the color space stays the same, but I don't always want to create a saved file on the hard drive for the second image.
    M. Jackson

First setup color management so that colors get converted the way you want them to.
But there will still be colors that can't be converted in a way you would expect them to. For instance 100 K won't be converted to RGB 000.
You don't need to convert to RGB at all. Just do a Save for Web and Devices and save as PNG. This will be in RGB.
If you need to get certain colors you would have to convert the file using File > Document Color mode and after that perhaps Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Art to Assign the colors.

  • Can't view image that was made on photoshop on my mac on a vista computer.

I made an image for my dad in photoshop and saved it as a gif on my mac. I put it in my dropbox in a shared folder and added my dad to the shared folder. He can see on his windows vista computer in dropbox that the image is there but when he tries to open it there is an "X" where the image should be or it says its corrupt. This also happens when I send him the image in an email or if I give it to him on a flash drive. Does anyone know why this is happening? How can he see the image I made on my mac on his Windows Visa Computer?
P.S. This also happens with every other image file type. When I send the image to my friend who has a Mac, he can open it with no problem.
    ~Thanks

It's a good idea to go ahead and post how you fixed it, just in case someone else comes along with the same problem.
