Images corrupted as they are viewed

I copied a Lexar 16 GB CF card of about 400 raw image files (cr2 format -- Canon EOS 7D) and everything seemed to go OK, but as I click on any of the images inside Library or Develop view, they become corrupted, with some or all of the image being replaced by white blocks with red and magenta stripes, ghosting from other images, etc. A couple of the images have been OK but basically it seems to be: click on a photo, destroy a photo.
I'm not sure whether the problem was the card, the reader or something within Lightroom. I am now unable to get either my camera or the card reader to read that card. I can reformat it but of course that will delete all the images so I have not done that.
I have never seen images download fine, look fine, and then be corrupted right before my eyes if I click on one. I'm now scared to death to click on anything.
Has anyone seen this problem before? I guess I may need to delete the entire import? Has anyone restored images like that? Is there a way to try to rescue the images off the card? I am wondering if it was just the transmission that was glitchy and that perhaps the images are just fine on the card --- except, I now can't read the card. :-(
I downloaded some other images off another CF card, this time direct from the camera and not through my reader, and so far I don't see the problem occuring on this new batch, which is a releief. But the question remains, anything I can do to rescue these other images?

Corrupted images are usually the result of hardware problems in my experience. To "rescue" the other images, you will need to download them again. If you have erased them, reformated the card, or reused the card, use photo rescue software to retrieve them. There are a number of good programs and I have found that different programs can retrieve different images. When I had to recover some images, I was surprised how many images were found from even months earlier. I had reformated the card and reused it a number of times, yet could recover a bunch of images.
If you can't read the card, try a different card reader (a friend's?), camera, and/or computer and see if that will work. As a last resort, you might be able to recover the preview from within the raw image if the file is readable and the preview is not damaged too.

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
1. Right click images you want to share.
2. Select Export version.
3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
See how you go.

I'd like to copy and paste a few Gigs worth of photos residing in iPhoto (ver. 5?) to a flash card - is there a simple way to do this w/o the issue of "duplicate" image numbers (when they are in fact unique images, but the translation is lost)... thx

Tried doing this a few yrs ago and it was maddening, the receiving flashcard (or desktop) kept flagging duplicate image numbers and my only choice to was to delete one or replace, when - because they are unique images - I wanted all of them to be saved on disk (is there a way to auto rename to prevent this)??? Just tried to export photos and kept getting messages that a certain photo was corrupt or some such thing and then it stopped and did not continue with export. Frustrating as I spent hours moving ~1200 photos into 2 folders on desktop. Tried doing a few at a time and one always stopped the entire export. Is there a way around this? I.e., program so it exports photos that work, does not export those that are damaged? Would be nice to know before the fact (in moving to folder) that photos have issues. When searching for an image in Finder on iMac, I found hundreds of images of printers !! All sorts of printer images which I certainly haven't loaded on.I went to Finder, File, Find and Image and there they are, hundreds,if not low thousands of them.

Almost certainly, no absolutely not once you start deleting stuff like this that you think is not needed, eventually you'll trash something essential and cause yourself a lot of heartache.
There are numerous files classed as images, some will be temporary files in browser caches, others system files, others your "real" images, others files which are not really images but appear to be.
The amount of space of what I presume are essentially icons of printers will will be minimal, lets say these images are 5k in size (I guess they are much smaller?) and there are 1,000 of them, thats only 5Mb. No doubt your disk has multiple gigabytes free, eg thousands of times as much free as you'd save by deleting all of them. So you might gain back an extra 0.0001% disk space*. NOt worth the time, let alone the risk, plus then you'll get into a mindset "hmm, I dont think I can possibly need this 23byte file either I'll delete that as well etc, and then "problem......".
Where are the images stored? It may be that at some time you were searching for a new printer and these images are from that exercise (though I doubt you looked at thousands?) in which case they are in your browser cache and you can always delete that through the browser, but that space will be overwritten by other images anyway.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a motto to work by with computers.
*( or, if you really do need the (say) 5MB of disk space back because you are running out, this would only be a very temporary solution and that wont have done you any good)

Injecting a watermark on images as they are viewed

We have over 60k .tif images on a Unix server. These images are
engineering drawings from A to J size. When an image is selected via IE or
Netscape our current proprietary viewer displays the image. We need to
watermark each image when displayed or when printed. These are legacy
images and it is unrealistic to go back and tag the images in their native
format.
The use of our proprietary viewer is not mandatory, but due to our
diverse user community and the detail needed by the engineers it is a very
low cost solution, actually free at this point.
We need a viewer that, when a user requests an image, a watermark
automatically displays on the image in a predefined location, and if
printed the watermark prints also. The viewer would be on the client and
launched when the server image is requested via a web browser. We would
like the viewer to be activated by the host verses the image file type
defined by the browser. This would eliminate the watermark displaying on
other images if the client viewer was used to view other images on another
server.
Are there any COTS products that will satisfy this requirement, or can
you recommend a custom code solution?

JPEG images burned to DVD are viewed fine on my Macbook Pro, but my clients PC says the disk is blank. Have tried several times now with same result. Please help.

The JPEG images I have edited on my Macbook Pro and then burned to DVD view fine on my computer. But when I give the same disk to my client with a PC (Windows Vista), his computer says the disk is blank. I have tried several times, first I burned the entire folder to the DVD, then tried burning just the images (not in a folder), and I also tried renaming the disk (shorter name, six letters), but always with the same result. His PC says the disk is blank and needs to be formated.

The problem is likely on the client's computer.
Some computers can't read certain brands of disks, same thing occurs on Mac's.
If you work with this client often you can find out which brand of disk works best with yours and their computers.

What am I missing. The opacity is at 100%. The drop target is a highlighted box from objects. I am using Captivate 8.

Hi there,
You might want to make sure your Depth setting is not set to Back instead of Front on your drop target(s).
The Depth setting is accessed via the Drag and Drop window/panel under Format setting while you have your drop target selected.
If your Depth setting is set to Back, especially if your opacity is set to 100% on your highlight box/drop target, your drag image would go behind your drop target giving the effect of disappearing behind your highlight box - especially if the drop target is larger than the drag image.

Presets - only applying to images as they are seen in library pane

I have lightroom version 1.2
Mac user 10.4.11 2.1 ghz processor
When I apply one of my presets to a large number of images (as in more than you can see at any one time in library pane) I notice it will only apply the preset to the images that I can see in the library pane.
As in if I scroll done to view images not already see on the library pane it then appears to start processing those images.
It is definitely doing this and not updating a preset that has already been applied. Why would it only apply preset to images as they are viewed in library pane.
Eventually of course the preset is applied to all images and once done it is done, but a bit of a nuisance as I need to babysit it.
Cannot think of a preference that would change this..
Any ideas?

Ah yes I see if you go into library>previews>render standard previews as soon as you run your preset it will do it all for you.

Aperture. Imported libraries, edited images corrupted!

All existing libraries (old and newer) imported into this latest version of Aperture appear corrupted - not all the images, only the ones round-tripped through photoshop and back. The images show up either as a blanket of messed up coloured lines (garbage) or a black screen with "image format not supported" error. All these images were originally imported in aperture and round-tripped back into aperture - Never touched by any other software and saved in .psd format.
Has anyone else run into this? Any thoughts would be much appreciated as I have hundreds of hours of editing tied up in the editing of these images and now they are all messed up! Older versions of aperture had no issues like this!

A lot more than 10% for me unfortunately! The masters seem fine! I had just archived a bunch from my laptop a little while ago and thought that I could then transfer them to my mini easily - well one of Aperture's famous updates screwed that idea up!
Yeah I too am in the process of trying to re-edit etc. and save some of them. But soo much time already invested. I had one project, among so many, with over 200 pictures heavily edited for a particularly artsy project and not a single one renders properly! And worse, I posted tiny copies of them so people could review and now those that want them want what they saw - So now have to try and duplicate those exact edits! This program is getting far to useless!
Aperture WAS a good idea but it's costing me much than the organizational help it provides!

You should get your keyboard checked as it's repeating on a lot of keys and makes you look silly.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

During the past three days I have had problems with the functionality of my Photoshop Elements 10 and received several messages indicating that the catalog is corrupt. How do I identify and fix images Elements 10 believes are corrupt?

Let me provide some more information that may help you diagnose this problem.
I run Elements on a PC. The operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. The System Type is x64-based. The processor is AMD A8-3850 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 2900 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s). The Hard Drive is 1.81 TB, and 1.5 TB of this is free. The Ram is 16 GB. Everything else works great.
I have used Photoshop Elements for about 10 years, during which time I have upgraded to newer versions 5 or 6 times. I have used Elements 10 during the past 2 years. I already bought Elements 12 but I am trying to repair this issue before I upgrade to it. I have approximately 65,000 photos in my catalog. All but the last 2,000 are backed up.
During the past few days I encountered several problems with the functionality of my Elements 10; all errors provide messages indicating that the catalog is corrupt. Forexample, when I edit a photo in my catalog, the thumbnail image of the newly edited versionwill not display. When I imported new photos, the thumbnail image would not display. In all cases the photo image was replaced by a ?.
I tried to correct the thumbnail problem by repairing and optimizing the catalog. In either case I received the same message that the catalog had not been repaired/optimized because some images were corrupt. However, despite this message, the thumbnails for the newly imported photos appeared but the thumbnails for the recently edited photos still have not.
Currently, I cannot import new images, edit, delete or even stack photos. I can still view, search for, copy and delete photos. When I try to import a photo a new photo I get the following messages - ”the requested change could not be completed because the current catalog is corrupt. You can attempt a repair in the file catalog dialog." - "Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types or the files are already in this Catalog." and "The catalog could not be repaired, if you have a recent catalog backup, you should restore it."
I have visually inspected the catalog and found about 25 recently imported photos that have a thumbnail image but lack the photo's id (i.e. img_3075.jpg would be replaced with ?). They are my photos from my camera and no different that the other 300 images I imported at the same time. However, these images in the catalog are blurry. When I check the image in the My Pictures folder the image is fine and properly located between img_3074.jpg and img_3076.jpg. I attempted to reconnect but received a message that there are no files to reconnect. I cannot delete the images from the catalog and If I delete them at the source (in the file folder) they still remain in the catalog view.

How do I get images from LR to windows file when it is saying they are offline or missing?

I loaded pictures to LR where I made some changes. They were jpegs. I deleted some in LR that went to recycle bin. Originals were in a windows file 2009-11-08. Since I did not see the LR changes in the windows pictures I decided to transfer LR images to the original file and opted to overwrite originals, might be a fatal mistake as it turns out, I am new to this. So now the originals are missing from the windows file but the images are still in lightroom but I cannot do anything with them other than view them in the library or slide show. I would like to put them back in the windows file for uploading to my blog and I am really hoping they are not missing as it tells me in lightroom. Can't see why they are missing if I am viewing them. Did try suggestion from support about adding parent file, then right clicking and locate can't remember exact procedure but I couldn't get it to work. I need help?? Thanks.

When exporting do not over write original files in the folder where your imported files are located. In fact I understood that LR had actually disabled this in more recent versions to prevent you doing exactly what you have done. So ensure you are running the latest version of the software (help, check for updates). over writing should only be done to folders of exported images (not those in the database). The whole point of LR is non destructive processing, that is your original files remain un changed by LR and changes are only applied to exported images.
What you need to do now is not re import but synchronise the folder. Right click (cttr click) on the affected folder in Lightroom and select synchronise folder. Check all the boxes and go ahead. This will import your exported images..as you have over written your originals unless you have backed them up then they are gone. If the are backed up, then move them into the folder using the OS file browser before synchronising.

Copied images from flash drive and they are invisible. how do I make them visible

I have copied some image files (jpeg format) from a flash drive onto my imac. When I go to view the images they do not appear. When I try to copy them again, there is a message that I cannot modify invisible images. These images were originally downloaded to a windows-based computer and copied to the flash drive. Is there a way to make these image files visible? I am trying to use them for a website. Thanks!

Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Enter at the prompt:
chflags nohidden
After the word "hidden" put a space and type in the path to and name of the file. For example, if they are on the Desktop: chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/name_of_file. Include the file's extension. Press RETURN. If all the files have the same extensions, then use chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*.jpg or *.jpeg.
