Images Disappearing in Aperture

Hi Everyone,
I run a little Aperture advisory blog in Hungarian, for my Hungarian readers.
I often get questions that I can answer, and the users are satisfied.
Now I’ve received a difficult question about disappeared images that I followed up with some research and an exchnage of messages with the user, but I can not find the answer.
This is a commercial (wedding photography) use of Aperture, with serious time commitments to deliver images, so it is critical to find a quick solution.
Here come the details:
Issue One:
Small network with one iMac and one MBP and with one Synology DS211J NAS with 2x2TB disks in a RAID1 array.
All assignments are given an individual .aplibrary that is placed in a separate folder, which also holds the RAW masters.
A couple of weeks ago my reader was working around the MBP, but not touching it. After a period of inactivity he could see from a distance, that the Preview images, one-after-the-other were being replaced by gray triangles with exclamation marks. As if a wraith had been invisibly fiddling with his files.
Some of the images were changing, being replaced by tiny, rectangular, cropped images from another library (!!!).
He quickly quit Ap, then restarted with Option-Cmd and went through all the repairs and the rebuild. After the maintenance and rebuild the situation remained the same. He gave up work with the MBP.
Issue Two:
We are now on the iMac, in the Library of an assignment with 2000 masters and 200 adjusted/finished images, a part of them, luckily, already exported.
Again, apparently without any human action, the images, seen in Browser view, one after the ather, spectacularly changed:
- Some turned by 90 degrees and got distorted - these later were possible to recover by Generate Thumbnails.
- Most of them changed to a camera-icon (though these are photos), and in the bottom-right corner „The referenced image’s master is offline” badge appeared.
In the “Locate Referenced Masters”-dialog all images are shown as existing in their correct location.
When clicking at such a thumbnail, the preview of the adjusted version appears with the “Loading…” message then, after it has been loaded, a translucent gray layer comes over it and the bricks in the Adjustments inspector get grayed out.
In some cases the preview finishes loading nicely, but the master is still shown as offline. When my reader attempted to export full sized JPG versions - you won’ believe: the result of the export was a copy of the RAW master!
After confirming that all standard repair processes have been completed (permissions, repair- and rebuild database, relocate referenced masters, etc) I suspected that the RAID might cause the problem, as it is using 2 disks and I know that Aperture links each image to the UUID of the disk which holds the image. I thought while the logical path is unchanged, the physical location - and hence the UUID - might change. But we tested this, moving a Library to a new external HD and then locating and reconnecting masters. In the result the images  showing a camera-icon still could not be found.
I’m getting rather desperate with this case, and would appreciate any advice that might bring us closer 1) to find the cause of the issues 2) to solve it.
Many thanks.

So the libraries are on a NAS?
I hate to point this out but Aperture libraries don't so well in such a configuration see: Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Also with the libraries on the NAS there is the danger that two separate Aperture processes could have a library open at the same time.

“Hi Kirby, thanks a lot for your answer.
I got one answer, from DMoore, saying:
“Try Safe boot and then restart with only Aperture open.  Still doent work write back with more details like Ram, HD capacity/free space.  Are these thumbnails or Previews? Have you turned off building previews in AP preferances?
    Safe boot   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
1  It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
2  It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
3  In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
4  It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
5  It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
6  It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
7  Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.”
As I don’t know much about the technical aspects of computers, I don’t really understand the first answer, and it sounds like following it might produce unwanted changes.
    But I understand your questions, so I’ll try to answer them;
"loading from any Project" means that I encounter the problem when I’m using a project, possibly after/because I’ve left the Mac on overnight, and/or  I’ve made a lot of adjustments, and, once the problem is there, it happens in any other project which I open – the images load then disappear.
I can see images in the Browser, so it only happens in the Viewer(s).
I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean by: “If you select "Photos" from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector, does it show you all of your Images?”. I am a newcomer to Aperture, so I don’t know what some of the buttons are for yet, but when I want to look at and adjust my pictures, I import them, as referenced images, then Aperture creates a folder/project in the Library. When I click on that Project (when it’s working properly), all the images appear in the Browser or the Viewers  – without me needing to “select Photos from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector”. I selected it and looked at all the items in the dropdown menu, but none of them seems to offer the option to ‘show all the images’. So I’m not sure how to answer your question except to say that – yes, I can see all the pictures in the Browser or the Viewers (when it’s working properly), but I don’t seem to need to use the Photos button to achieve this.
    Did Aperture work before?
Yes it worked ok for a while, but I only purchased it on 24th May.
If I understand correctly, the difference between thumbnail and preview is that the thumbnail is what I see when the “Loading” wheel is turning, and the disappearance of this wheel after a few seconds means that I am now looking at the preview (also, the thumbnail cannot be adjusted).
So I think the problem occurs when the thumbnail has finished loading; the viewer going blank/grey might mean that it is not showing the preview.
But I have not changed the default Preview settings in Aperture Preferences.
    My macbookpro details:
    2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 Gb 1333 MHz DDR3
    Hard Drive capacity 499.25 GB
    Available 387.36 GB
I have noticed another problem: I cannot apply the same rating to multiple images: following the instructions, I select a group of contiguous (or non- contiguous) images, choose a selection eg “5stars” using the keyboard, but the stars only appear in the last selected image – even though all the images are still showing as selected.”
I hope this helps you to understand more.
Thank you for trying to help me.

  • Image Disappears when Adding Adjustments in Aperture 3

I am experiencing odd behavior when using the adjustment tools in Aperture 3. I tried to crop an image and instead of staying on screen for me to finish the adjustment, the image disappeared. I was able to save it by undoing. I created a version of the image and I could crop that OK. I have Add New Version when Making Adjustments checked but it does not seem to be working.

I've had a similar "disappearing" image problem when trying to apply the retouch tool. I don't have the "create version when applying adjustments" preference checked though. Hopefully these issues are additional 3.0 bugs that will get fixed in 3.0.1. Be sure to report the issue to Apple using the "Aperture > Provide Aperture Feedback" menu item.

  • Images "Disappear" When Moving a Project But Really They'r e Just Invisible

Last night I imported 442 images into a new project. I rated them, and edited about 40-50. This morning I moved the project within the same library. When I did so, all the images disappeared, sort of. The project appeared empty. I let it sit a couple of minutes, and undid the move to no effect.
I checked to see if a filter was blocking the images but it was not the problem. I checked the Project properties and it showed the images were all there (plus, I use referenced files and I hadn't deleted the CF card so worst case scenario I had all my originals). Also, when I displayed all the projects in a browser view window, the project showed up and I could sweep through all the thumbnails in the project browser. But again, if I selected the project and tried to see the images in either the browser, viewer, or split view, nothing showed up. No thumbnails, no file names, no empty thumbnails, nothing. The photos were sort of invisible.
I "solved" the issue by moving an image - any image - from another project into the problem project. Suddenly that photo and all the other images, were visible. Removing the random image did not recreate the problem.
Since I no longer have the problem I'm posting for 2 reasons: (1) to publish the problem and my fix in case anybody gets the same problem, and (2) to see if anybody knows what caused this and if there is a more direct fix than my weird indirect fix. Thanks.

I have had the same thing happen consistently. I import images into a default project. Then when I move the project into an organizational folder... all the images disappear. After a couple of panics, I have now realized that if I stay calm, close Aperture, then open it again, the pictures are all present. Quite a pain in the butt, but at least there is a work around. Albeit a bit scary .

Hi I have been having a problem with Bridge in CS4 recently. So uninstalled CS4 and Lightroom 4.4 and reinstalled them on my Desktop PC. When I turned on Bridge through CS4, My thumb nail images disappeared and a thumb nail icon with CR2 appeared. Now some of my images have disappeared from Light room 4.4, but I can find them in CS4 and Bridge now shows some thumb nails as images and some as an icon with CR2. I have spent two weeks going through preferences etc. to find how to resolve my problem. Please can you Help? Meany thanks in advance
      Derek Randall

I don't use LR and rarely use the bridge so I can not answers about thumbnails in them,  However thumbnails in windows file explorer and windows dialog for CS2 files will only show if you have installed codec into windows that will produce them. Windows does not do CR2 thumbnails on its own. I use FastPictureViewer Codec package for RAW File and PSD files thunbmail support.

  • How can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, do I have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense

I hope there has been found a more efficiant solution for this,  how can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, I really hope I don't have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense
    any suggestions?

Did you try browsing your backups in the Finder ?  That is, do not go and "Enter Time Machine".  Instead, navigate to your Time Machine backup via Finder and then manually go to the time period (by folder name) you are looking for ... when you find your Aperture library you can then "Show Package Contents" and find the Master you are looking for.

  • How to handle images stored /outside/ Aperture

I am coming from a PC environment where my images were stored all over my hard drive in various folders and subfolders. I am part-way through organizing all of this in Aperture but I OFTEN find myself exporting images to folders on my desktop in order to upload them to FTP or edit them in Photoshop conveniently and as I move to working in something like an Adobe Suite that allows me to edit and link images I do see myself keeping images outside of Aperture.
Can anyone help me out with how to manage this a little more practically (say by only keeping images on the desktop but not in the Documents Folder) and/or should I be trying to discipline myself down to keeping everything in Aperture? I find it relatively confusing to do it this way but am very interested in getting some advice on this.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Jon,
I used to have everything sorted with the top folder being 'Project 1', 'Project 2', 'Project 3', etc. with either all files in that folder, or sub-folders for each file type. This was pretty good, but eventually got out of hand once I had a couple hundred projects with all types of files in each folder and needed to find a specific file (say an Illustrator file I needed to work on).
Now, I use the following structure for Adobe CS5 projects:
Top level folder = 'Design Files'
Second level folders = 'Photoshop Files', 'Illustrator Files', 'InDesign Files', 'Acrobat Files'
Third level folders (inside each of the second level folders as needed) = 'Project 1', 'Project 2', 'Project 3', etc.
This gives me all my PSD files inside one master 'Photoshop Files' folder divided by Project folders. If - for example - Project 1 has PSD files, AI files, IND files and PDF files, then there is a Project 1 folder under each of the second level folders for each program. This allows me easy access to either all files for a program by going to that folder, or I can run a dynamic search (smart folder) for a project and see all relevant folders for that project in the search results.
The main reason I have it this way now is that I usually remember the file type (as mentioned above for an Illustrator file). I typically remember that I did an illustration, but can't remember the file name of the illustration or the project it went in for sure. My current structure shortens my search time considerably.
Note - I can also use Bridge CS5 very easily for the Adobe CS5 files since it shows thumbnails of the actual file and I can visually search very fast that way.
At home - with Aperture - I only hold the original images (pictures) that I started to work with. I don't keep any PSD, TIFF, PDF, PNG, etc. in the library. This is simply because Bridge is much better at showing those files with transparency if it exists, and Aperture stays a straight-forward image (picture) database for me.
If I send an image to a plug-in or to Photoshop from inside Aperture, I do it for a specific purpose and then I complete the process and export it to one of the dedicated folders in Finder (typically to my Photoshop Files folder). If I really need to keep the layer work in a PSD file, then I will use the 'Save As' command from inside Photoshop to save out to a folder and then just trash the file Aperture sent to Photoshop. Although I have not had any real issues with Aperture holding PSD files in the past, I simply trust Adobe to handle their own files without relying on Apple's program to do it for me.
As far as miscellaneous files (screenshots, scans, web icons), I really don't do many of those. I have a few scans which are not part of any project and just keep those in a two level folder (Art / Scans). For web icons, I would probably suggest going with the program you used for a folder (Photoshop Files?). Not sure what program or file type you are using for those (GIF, PNG - I don't work with web design so not real familiar with current practices for icon design for the web).
For JPEG files, I use a second level 'JPEG files' folder for any JPEG's that are used in my design projects in a 'Project 1', 'Project 2', etc. folder (same as the other file types mentioned above). Although, I typically use PSD files as source files and then save out JPEG's on a case-by-case basis (similar to using Aperture as the source and exporting as needed).
Since most of my design files are for InDesign projects, I complete the project by embedding all links in the document after having printed to PDF (and proof-reading prior to embedding). This protects against lost links if I need to work with the master file again for some reason. I can always place a new image or file in the document as needed and since I have a PDF of the file to send to collegues, the extra file size in the InDesign file after embedding is not a big deal.
So, in summary; I use a top level folder (based on category; e.g., Design Files) and then organize by file type parent folders with dedicated project folders under those as needed. Works for the way I think.
I hope that was somewhat clear.
Message was edited by: CorkyO2 to change "top level file" to "top level folder" in summary.

  • Aperture 1.5: External editor not bringing image back into Aperture?

    Hi,
I am running Aperture 1.5 and have Noise Ninja installed as my external editor. I can successfully send an image from my Aperture library to NN and edit it there, but when I save the image, it is not brought back into Aperture. Further, if I try to send another image from Aperture to NN while NN is open, a new TIFF version is created in Aperture, but nothing opens up in NN.
I've been using Aperture and NN for about a year, and it has always acted like this, so I've basically given up on trying to use the External Editing feature in Aperture, but after some research it seemed like this shouldn't be as difficult as it has been for me.
Has anyone else had a problem like this and been able to resolve it? And does it matter that my files are referenced, and not stored in the Aperture library?
    Thanks all
    Burt

    Burt,
Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the same problem with Photoshop files not saving back into Aperture. I haven't been able to figure it out.

  • Images disappearing in photoshop cs2...

    Hello Folks,
I seem to have a problem brewing in Photoshop...Lately when I am working in Photoshop, if I have more than one image open at a time and I go to close one of them they all disappear from the screen but they are still open.  I have to go to Close All and start over.  Also, if I am using the polygon lasso tool, I will be carefully tracing a part of an image and suddenly the image disappears, while the window is still there, it turns grey and all I can see is the lasso tool traces I have made but I then have to start all over because I have to get the image back and the only way to do this is to end the lasso session and start over...The image will come back at some point after I reset the tool but I have to start all over again...I have updated everything, tried to optimize Photoshop performance but nothing seems to work...I am using windows media center edition sp 3 and have 1.87 gb of RAM.  I can't think of anything that corresponds to when this started happening, I didn't change much except I do always do windows updates but I choose which ones I want to install and what is junk...Unfortunately the scratch disk is the same drive as the program is on but at the moment I don't have an alternative, could this cause this situation?  Should I invest in a drive just for the scratch disk?  Or, if anyone has any other suggestions I am willing to try anything...This program is important to my work and I use it a lot...
    Thank you,
    Jennifer

Off hand it sounds like video driver or low ram issue. Examples:Windows did an update that included a faulty video driver (which isn't very likely) or you install another program that wants to run in the background. The former usually require you to enable the download of hardware drivers for the update, the latter well even a virus could do that.
Goto your video card makers website and get the latest driver that they recommend and then run msconfig (Start>run>msconfig) disable all the startup programs and see if that helps, when you are done, make sure you reenable the programs. Each time you use msconfig it will require a restart.
If that don't help, next is check the hard drive making sure you have enough room, defraged and no errors.
Next is to run a test on the ram. You should find one at downloads.com or take it to who ever services your system and let them do it. Mind you they will charge for time checking and cost of replacing the ram or HD is needed. This is definately a last step effort. Try to do as much as you can first to save some money, if if you are unconfortable doing this then the money is well spent.

  • How to hide the file name (the bizarre number assigned by the camera) when exporting an image version in aperture from an album. Pl understand I want to keep the file name in the project library version.

how to hide the file name (the bizarre number assigned by the camera) when exporting an image version in aperture from an album. Pl understand I want to keep the file name in the project library version.

Within Aperture you have Images, which are constructed on-the-fly from two files (the Master and the Version).  You get an image-format file _only_ when you export an Image.  You select the file name (usually a scheme) when you create an image-format file (that is, when you export).  Look under "Aperture→Presets→File Naming" for built-in Presets.  You can, of course, create your own or customize any provided.
The Preset is applied to only the file newly created by your "export" command.  It is not applied to the Image in Aperture (unless you rename your Versions or your Masters).

  • Keynote 6.0 Images Disappearing

We do a lot of work within Keynote 6.0 and every time we add a new images to the presentation all other images disappear and we are left with a grey box with a cross and a question mark. It doesn't do this to all presentations but quite a lot, and also it seems to be when we add an image to an old presentation that already contains images. The new image we add appears ok, but any images that were previously in the presentation disappear.
We have been having this issue for a few months but have never been able to find an answer.

Opening Keynote version 5 files in version 6 will cause these problems, if thats what your doing, only open keynote 5 lies with Keynote version 5.

When in preview mode they do not appear either.
If you understood my question and the images also disappear in InDesign when switching the screen to Preview mode, or Overprint Preview, that means they are set to non-printing in some way. Either they are on a layer set to non-printing, or they're set to non-printing on an individual basis in the Attributes panel.
    >I am using the latest OS,
Not really helpful. OS X? Windows? Probably not relevant, as it turns out, for this problem, but you should be specific.
    >The pdf appears in preview
Does that mean you are trying to use Mac Preview to view the PDF? If so, it may give you bad results. Mac Preview is not a godd general-purpose PDF viewer and is incapable of rendering complex PDF.
The first error dialog you show is what you would get when opening a file in ID that has different document color spaces than the default settings in your color settings file. That's not a problem, and to preserve the color appearances you would leave things as they are.
The second warning dialog indicates you are making an interactive PDF, which is RGB. If you are using CMYK images I don't think you'll avoid color shifts no matter what you do if you have transparency, but I don't do interactive PDF, so I can't give good advice here. If you are using RGB images, by all means your transparency blend space should be set to RGB.
Can you post a screen shot of the export dialog?

  • Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture version 3.6 on Yosemite?

Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture (version 3.6 500021000000000.3, Digital Camera RAW 6.0 - Build 761.5, Digital Camera RAW support 6000 - Build 136.1)
I used to be able to manipuplate Nikon Raw (NEF) images from a Nikon D70 and D3200 using Aperture, until the 70 died and the 3200 was stolen about 18 months ago. Recently I did two things: (1) I upgraded OS X to Yosemite and (2) purchased a Nikon D750.  I have successfully imported NEF files from the camera to Aperture, but the images do not render/ cannot be opened/ manipulated. Instead, I see a black thumbnail for each imported image with a cassette recorder play icon in the center of each image.
I can view the NEF image in Finder preview mode, either directly when viewing the images on the camera SD card or after exporting the previously imported NEF image from Aperture to my desktop or user folder.  Previously imported NEF image seem unaffected.
    thanks.
    D.

The current Apple OSX 10.10 Yosemite and the current Aperture version 3.6 do not have support yet for importing Nikon d750 nef/raw files. It usually takes Apple six to eight weeks to release a new digital camera raw update file for new Nikon dslr models. Once that digital camera raw update file is finally released, update your current version of Aperture and that will allow you to import your d750 raw files. In the meantime, you have many workarounds. In my opinion, the easiest is to save images in duplicate nef/raw and jpeg image files to your SD cards.
And for now, just import the jpegs to Aperture 3.6 from your d750.  Process your jpegs in Aperture - and hope your clients are happy with the jpegs and can wait for later nef/raw image processing. Be sure to save and do not erase your original SD cards that include the nef/raw and jpeg files - then when Aperture finally releases a new digital camera raw file update that includes the d750 - just insert your original camera SD cards into the computer platform and import the old d750 nef/raw files and edit/process them.
There are many other ways to proceed in the interim as well. You can always import your d750 nef/raw images into Lightroom (if it has been updated to convert the d750 nef files) and process them there. But for the time being, if you can afford to save and hold onto your original SD cards and wait for the inevitable Aperture digital camera raw update, this is a very easy and simple way to proceed.

  • Dragging Images Out Of Aperture 3 Halves Resolution?

When I drag my images out of Aperture 3 into Photoshop or onto my desktop, it halves the resolution and drops the dpi to 72. If I put the image back in Aperture and repeat the process, the resolution halves again. Any idea as to why?

, but when you're doing a lot of editing, it's easier and faster [I find] just to drag it out into photoshop.
You could set up Aperture to use Photoshop as external Editor:
Just set the external Editor to "Photoshop" in Preferences > Export > External Editor.
Then you just need to right-click the images in Aperture and select "Edit with Photoshop" from teh contextual menu.
And the edited image will be recognized by Aperture as a version of the Image in Aperture.
